VLAI Annual Conference looks to the future

T

his year’s Vehicle Leasing Association of Ireland (VLAI) AGM and Conference changed format worked well with a line up of speakers on issues effecting members today and in the future. Speakers on the economy, new business risks and emerging alternative powered vehicles presented delegates with a very worthwhile day. Richard Hill of Peak Performance echoed the recent RSA/HSE Road Safety Conference when he highlighted the responsibilities of companies towards their employees while driving company vehicles. One case he highlighted had company directors jailed along with the driver of the company vehicle following a fatal crash.

The dominant theme of the conference was the amount of carbon produced and the coming of a greener industry with cars powered by alternatives to today’s fleet car. Much like this years Frankfurt Show speakers from BMW, Ford, Mitsubishi, GM Opel and Toyota all presented what they will be offering in the near future from hybrids to electric cars. These and the possibilities of tax breaks and leasing of batteries were highlighted by various speakers all indicating a more complex computation for VLAI members in the future. Jerry Kiersey

Star drivers S

ome of the worlds best drivers recently gathered in Rome to take part in the eSafety Challenge, an annual event that promotes and highlights the life-saving potential of eSafety technologies. Formula One stars Heikki Kovalainen, Robert Kubica, Timo Glock, and Giancarlo Fisichella joined forces with Tom Kristensen, eight-time 24 Hour Le Mans winner and Susie Stoddart from the German Touring Car series, to demonstrate five different eSafety technologies. The event was opened by a number of distinguished guests, including Jean Todt, President of eSafetyAware, Paul Clark MP, UK Minister for Transport, Michael Schumacher, seven-time Formula One World Champion, and Michelle Yeoh Make Roads Safe global ambassador.

Pat McArdle of Ulster Bank presented a view of the next three to five years for Ireland’s business scene that left none of the audience with any illusions as to how this year for the automotive industry was at best a reflection of times to come. In a lively Q and A session he gave a fairly scathing view of the “Gang of Forty Th ree” economists and their opposing NAMA. Pat bluntly questioned “who are these people and where have they been over the last ten years?” NAMA for Pat is the only game in town.

Each of the demonstrated systems has the potential to save lives by addressing the root cause of some of the most common accidents, and could lead to major reductions in road deaths and casualties. Estimates for Electronic Stability Control (ESC) alone show that in Europe it could save 4,000 lives and prevent more than 100,000 injuries if fitted to every car.

Generation 5 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate

A

nother distinctive member of the New Mercedes-Benz E-Class family is about to enter the marketplace in the shape of the Estate. Like the saloon and Coupé, the Estate features a number of technological innovations to enhance safety and comfort. But that’s not all, it will also have self-levelling rear air suspension, remote tailgate opening and ‘quickfold’ system for the rear seats. With a load capacity of 1930 litres, the New E-Class Estate is the largest ‘station-wagon’ in the premium segment – length/width/ height – 4895/1854/1471 mm and its interior space and rear headroom for passengers is now bigger than ever. Another feature is the EASY-

PACK folding load compartment floor, which considerably increases the useable height of the load compartment. It can be folded up and secured in various positions. As per the saloon version, the engine line-up is Euro 5 compatible thereby cleaner and more fuel efficient.

Since launch of the fi rst Estate in 1977, more than one million customers have enjoyed the flexibility and practicality of driving this type of Mercedes-Benz car. Th is success story is likely to continue with the fi ft h generation of the E-Class Estate.

omen place safety as their number one priority when buying a car, yet are 30 per cent less likely to know about the existence of eSafety systems than men, according to a new study conducted by the eSafetyAware! campaign. The research showed that women are involved in seven out of 10 car purchase decisions and that the general trend is a purchase with responsibility shared between partners, rather than one party acting alone. The study further highlighted that although both men and women considered safety to be an important factor when purchasing a car, it consistently scored higher in priority for women.

back eSafety Prior to the launch of the Challenge eSafety Aware released research on the take up of eSafety technologies, highlighting a critical lack of awareness amongst the general population and showing that despite being involved in seven out of 10 car purchase and placing safety as their number priority when buying a car, women are 30 per cent less likely to know about the existence of eSafety systems than men. Encouragingly eSafetyAwares study showed that if consumers were made aware of the technologies, they were willing to pay to have them fitted, and the overall fittings could potentially double.

The eSafety Challenge is an event co-funded by the European Commission, the FIA Foundation and eSafetyAware! (comprising a wide range of automotive stakeholders) and supported by EuroNCAP. The Challenge focuses on innovative vehicle safety technologies and the potential lives to be saved on the roads through increased deployment of these technologies. An important obstacle for deployment is the lack of awareness among both policymakers and end users, which is affecting policy support, user expectations and readiness for change.

BMW Group Ireland Appoints new Managing Director

J

ohn Ives is the new BMW Group Ireland Managing Director. He replaces Sean Green who moves back to BMW Group UK as Sales Director. John joins the company from BMW UK, where he has held a number of positions since 1995. His previous roles include Regional Sales Manager, Sales Development Manager and most recently he spent four and a half successful years as Sales Operations Manager. Prior to joining BMW he spent over six years with Peugeot UK. In his new role Mr. Ives will lead the BMW Group’s Irish sales and marketing subsidiary, as

well as the network of 13 BMW, MINI a nd Motor rad dealerships. Commenting on his new role John Ives said, “there is no doubt that 2009 is a transitional year that presents major challenges for the motor industry in Ireland, however I am confident that the BMW Group will emerge from this crisis in a strong position.”

LPG is still a popular option

A

ccording to Adam Barfoot, Project Engineer Calor Gas, LPG-Liquid Petroleum Gas is still available on both sides of the Irish Border and proving popular too. Termed nowadays as Autogas, there are around 50 outlets spread around the 32 counties. “With roughly 1,000 cars in the North using it, and this number is growing every year,” he says. “Autogas currently retails at 65c/litre in the Republic and 53.9p/litre in the North,” he added. “Vans can be converted too,” was his advice.

LPG Autogas is primarily derived during the extraction of Natural Gas and Oil, and is also produced in refi neries. One diesel vehicle emits the same quantities of NoX as over 20 LPG vehicles and PM (Particulate Matter) emissions from LPG – fuelled vehicles on an urban cycle are below reliably measured levels.

As stated in the European LPG Associations Newsletter, “Autogas is a clean and immediately available alternative with a genuine role to play in the European transport fuel mix of today and tomorrow.”

2010 Land Rover Discovery and Range Rover Sport - the best yet The Discovery 4 also gets extensive chassis system developments and a new six speed adaptive transmission. While it may lack the Sport’s pure driveability, and you are always aware of it’s sheer bulk and weight, this is undoubtedly the best handling and refined Discovery yet.

Want Safer Cars But when it comes to knowledge about eSafety systems, the study showed that general awareness is still low, ranging from 56 per cent for Speed Alert systems down to 35 per cent for Lane Support systems. Women consistently score lower than men in awareness of the existence of such devices, as much as 50 per cent for some systems. The study also shows that people are on average 30 per cent more likely to choose eSafety systems when aware of them and would be willing to pay more to have these systems fitted.

UVs may no longer be the flavour of the month, but Land Rover has high hopes that new cleaner engines and a host of technological advances combined with exterior and interior updates will ensure that the latest generation Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport will continue to entice buyers to the brand.

It is when you take them off-road that you really realize just how capable these vehicles are. Whether wading waist high through muddy rivers or climbing or descending implausibly steep slopes, the Discovery and Sport take it all in their stride. The new models both get updated Terrain Response systems while options such as Surround Camera system make off-road maneuvering much easier.

FLEET CAR had an opportunity to test drive both vehicles over a mixture of terrain in the Scottish Borders and came away impressed with Land Rover’s latest products. Always an accomplished on-road performer the Sport gets chassis modifications including better brakes and an Adaptive Dynamics system while options such as a paddle-shift gearchange bring it closer than ever to sports car performance.

Exterior and interior updates keep the Discovery 4 and Sport looking fresh, while the new 3 litre TDV6 is not only quiet and refined but has 29% more power and 36% more torque than the outgoing 2.7 litre while improving fuel consumption by 8.9% and lowering emissions by 8.3%. Cathal Doyle

Feasible and affordable technologies from

Volkswagen Cars

t the launch of the new Volkswagen Golf GTI, Adam Chamberlain, Head of Sales and Marketing for Volkswagen Ireland used the opportunity to outline the brand’s environmental solutions into the near future. “January 2010 will see the introduction of the Golf 1.6 TDIBlueMotion and thanks to 99g/ km CO2 , it is the world’s most fuel efficient car in its class. The 105bhp sixteen valve, four cylinder engine generates its maximum torque of 250 Newton metres at a low 2,000rpm.” It’s no slouch either. He says, “as equipped with these key performance parameters, the engine accelerates the Golf BlueMotion to 100km/h in just 11.3 seconds. It’s top speed is 190km/h.” Two other Golf models will also fall into the CO2 Tax Band A – the 1.6 TDI (90bhp) @ 118g/km and the 1.6 TDI (103bhp) @ 119g/km. In addition, the 1.2 litre TSI 105bhp petrol version slots into Tax Band B from its 134g/km CO2 rating. Adam was also keen to highlight some new optional extras on the new Golf range. ‘Park Assist’ is a Parking Steering Assistant System that reduces stress when parking in town and for those not used to parallel parking. Parking dents and scratches can be eliminated as the Park Assist takes over optimum steering wheel movements. Another option new on the specification list is ACC - Adaptive Cruise Control, which, here-to-fore was only available in the luxury/executive sector. “ACC with cruise control system is a distance control system which is activated by the steering column stalk. If there is no vehicle in front, the system behaves like a cruise control system. ACC keeps a constant distance when a vehicle is detected in front. For this purpose, the system brakes and accelerates independently. In reality ACC offers relaxed driving particularly over long distances,

with unique comfort, thanks to semiautomated driving and safety,” explains Adam. Mentioning safety, Adam proudly stated that ESP – Electronic Stability Programme will be standard on all Golf models from January 2010.

that now offers record-sett ing fuel economy – 4.4L/100kms. BlueMotion features include energy recovery, a Start/Stop system, low profi le tyres and longer gear ratios from the transmissions.

At the Frankfurt M o t o r S h o w, Volkswagen premiered further examples of its BlueMotion tech nolog y i n production form. The new generation Polo BlueMotion was launched here as was the latest version of the Passat BlueMotion

VW IRELAND TEAMS-UP WITH EUROPEAN CHAMPS

Volkswagen Ireland celebrated the launch of the new Golf GTI and GTD with the Leinster Rugby Team at the Pavilion, Leopardstown Racecourse. “The pairing of Europe’s number one car brand with the Heineken Cup Champions forms a formidable partnership,” claimed Adam Chamberlain, Head of Sales & Marketing, Volkswagen Ireland (pictured above with team members Leo Cullen, Nathan Hines and Jonathon Sexton). “We are delighted with our new partnership 6 FLEETCAR | Winter 2009

with the Leinster Rugby Team and very pleased they could be here for the launch of our halo car. It is a perfect start to what promises to be a great relationship with Leinster.” The Golf model line-up has grown stronger and better and this sixth generation offers a sporty GTI that maintains the character offered in the mid-nineties generation. At the heart of the GTI is an advanced new 2.0-litre TSI engine producing 210 BHP, available linked to either a six-speed manual or DSG

gearbox. The mechanical changes are joined by subtle cosmetic additions such as striking honeycomb radiator grill. Like the standard Golf, the GTI uses horizontal lines to make the new car appear lower and wider than it really is. In reality, the new GTI is 27 mm wider than the car it replaces. The Golf GTI is joined by the new Golf GTD, whose 170 BHP combined with 5.3 litres per 100km and 139 g/km CO2 makes it the high performance economical alternative.

Lean & Green – New Opel Astra

World Premiere at Frankfurt marks sixth generation in 30 years

T

o perfectly illustrate the brand’s philosophy of providing drivers with affordable, real-life efficiency while still preserving the fun-to-drive experience, the New Opel Astra is leaner, greener and more practical. The New Astra has grown slightly to provide a roomier interior and, at the same time, it has benefited from engineering enhancements that allow it to improve fuel efficiency and performance. Premiered to the World at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the New Astra marks the sixth generation of the model in the last 30 years and will be built at the General Motor’s Ellesmere Port plant in Cheshire, England. Styling cues from the highly-praised Insignia have been reinterpreted for New Astra, and according to Mark Adams, Vice-President of Design for GM Europe, “The design of the New Astra takes all the best Opel has to offer and delivers it to the compact class.” He added, “We have built a five-door hatchback that is as beautiful as is safe, comfortable and practical. We’re continuing with the same premium design cues as the Insignia.” “However,” Mark stated, “The main design themes, like the wing-shaped signatures and the blade, needed an individual execution to

8 FLEETCAR | Winter 2009

avoid ‘cloning’ the model ranges. This is why, for instance, you see twin wings in the rear lights and a reversed blade on its flanks.” Mark and his team continues the design theme throughout the Astra’s interior. The blade theme can be seen in details like the shape of the door grab handles and the trim for the gearshift moulding and steering wheel. Overall, the Astra’s cabin is more spacious than before, thanks to more effective packaging and the cars longer wheelbase. It also benefits from greatly increased storage areas, including a clever mini-glovebox on the driver’s side and an optional drawer under the front passenger seat. Astra’s line-up of powertrains, ranging from 95 bhp to 180 bhp with manual transmission provides impressive performance and cuts fuel consumption and CO2 emissions overall by more than 12 per cent compared with the current generation. The average fuel consumption of the four diesel engines – 1.3 litre/1.7 litre and 2 x 2.0 litre units, which are expected to represent almost half of the New Astra cars sold in Europe at launch, is only 4.6l/100 km. All feature common-rail fuel injection and produce combined CO2 emissions of no more than 129 g/km. Euro 5 emission controls are met throughout.

The average fuel consumption of the petrol line-up is only 6.1l/100 km. Continuing Opel’s strategy of downsizing, a new 103 kW/140 hp 1.4 Turbo petrol engine replaces the current 1.8 litre variant, improving fuel efficiency by nearly 18 per cent. “Our strategy is to offer a complete Astra range with fuel efficient engines at an accessible price, rather than focusing all attention on one single, spectacular, yet expensive, low CO2 version. With this we are continuing to provide real-life fuel consumption reduction while preserving a great fun-to-drive experience,” says Carl-Peter Forster of Opel’s Supervisory Board. All Astras will be equipped with six-speed gearboxes, with the exception of normally aspirated 1.4 and 1.6 litre models and the 1.3 litre CDTi, which employ a five-speed manual gearbox. A new, compact automatic transmission will be available for all petrol models. “We are very proud of the achievements reached by our engineering staff while developing the New Opel Astra. Making it an outstanding entry in the very competitive compact segment,” said Hans Demant, Opel Managing Director.

REPORT

Green Power Forum opens electric car debate Delegates heard that likely subsidies across Europe for EVs varied greatly, with an average of ca. €6,000, rising to up to €13,000 in Denmark. Both Smith and Withrington denounced subsidies as misplaced. Berett a spoke of a system whereby the EV itself would be sold at the same price as a conventional car, but the battery would be leased to customers for a monthly charge.

W

ithin two years, motoring around Ireland will have a different visual appearance, as over 1,000 electric vehicle plug-in stations will be installed in our cities and larger towns. That’s according to Senan McGrath, Sustainability Manager, ESB who was one of the guest speakers at the IMWA Green Power Forum held at UCD’s Global Irish Institute. His comment that 80% of the cars power would be recharged within 30 minutes was described as a ‘red herring’ by fellow panalist Dr. William Smith, USD School of Electrical, Electronic & Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Smith also questioned the Government’s Plan to have 10% of our cars powered by electricity by 2020, claiming it would reduce our greenhouse gases by only 1%, “which would make it unjustifiable,” he said “electric vehicles were a legitimate option only for city driving, their efficiency on longer journeys contrasting with that of hybrids.” Craig Cheetham of GM disagreed, claiming that the Opel Ampera would offer an ‘extended range vehicle’ to customers from September 2011. Supported, but not driven, by an internal combustion engine, it would allay the common notion of ‘range anxiety’, and offer cruising at 120km/h and zero emissions for 90% of journeys. Using a 10-year lithium ion battery, he promised it would be introduced at ‘a limited premium’ over conventional cars.

supply. Mr. Withrington also claimed that the ESB would be carbon neutral by 2035 seemed optimistic, given only 10% of current electricity is from renewable sources. Tom Smith, Chief Marketing Manager, Electric Vehicles – Nissan Europe, had a more positive view and said, “the electric vehicle was the breakthrough needed to meet future emissions standards, and that it suited Ireland given our low travelling distances, coupled with the potential for wind energy. Running costs would better those of efficient petrol or diesels.” He concluded that using features such as heating in cold weather would reduce range by ca. 10%. “There is a medium-term future for diesel hybrids,” so says Joseph Berett a, Head of Energies, Technologies and Automotive Emissions, at PSA Peugeot-Citroen, “with full EVs only for city use in the short term.” He foresaw no dramatic breakthrough in battery range in the immediate term, saying a battery delivering 300km would take up to 10 years to fully develop, from a durability and safety perspective.

Paddy Murphy representing event sponsors Semperit Tyres said, “We all know oil reserves will not last forever, so fi nding viable fuel alternatives is becoming increasingly important. Th is is a key concern for everyone involved in the automotive industry – from tyre makers to car manufacturers to energy providers. We emphasized the increasing importance of tyres in a world of electric cars, where lower rolling resistance through leaner tyres and special compounds can contribute to maximise range. “Energy conservation also requires proper tyre maintenance. Up to 25 percent of tyres on our roads are underinflated. That increases rolling resistance, and will impact significantly on the range of an electric car,” he added. The event was chaired by broadcaster Rodney Rice. Cars from Mitsubishi, GreenAer and Green Machines were available on site to test drive. Th rough its customer the ESB, Electric Vehicles Ireland had a Smith Electric Edison on display also. A golden opportunity to include light commercial vehicles in the debate was missed as a number of manufacturers in this sector have electric versions already in the market place such as Smith Electric, Modec, Iveco, Piaggio, Verde, Isuzu/Zeroed and Axiam Mega. For the Irish Government to reach their target by 2020, electric powered commercials will have to be included in sales programme.

In claiming that electric powered vehicles use 75% more energy than equivalent diesels in real-life conditions, Paul Withrington, Director, Transport Watch UK, was of the opinion that “The electric car is a NO. Short of power cells on car roofs, it appears far better to invest in improving the efficiency of the internal combustion engine, which has the potential to reduce its fuel consumption by perhaps 25%.” He also warned of the scarcity of lithium for battery manufacture and the dependence on a single country, Bolivia, for its Text: Jarlath Sweeney – editor@fleet.ie

ith car sales down by over 60 per cent compared to a year ago the outlook is just as bleak for the coming twelve months unless some action is taken to ignite the market. A Government incentivised Scrappage Scheme would help but the most assured way for things to improve is for our economy as a whole to recover. At the moment, there is no evidence of that happening anytime soon. In fairness to the industry players, the distributors and dealers – those that are managing to survive – every avenue is being explored to att ract customers. There may be the traditional upsurge in the fi rst quarter of 2010, but given that fleets are a year older and many customers held back in 2009, they could now be ready to update next year. Environment issues are now, well and truly, centre stage with car manufacturers tripping over each other in the race to bring us the latest green technology and vying for the eco high ground; each claiming that their hybrid, electric or fuel cell technology answers the call and offers the best solution. Indeed, our Government has stated that it hopes to have 10 per cent of vehicles on Irish roads running on electricity by 2020. However, the internal combustion engine will be with us for a long time yet and there has been substantial development here in recent time too, especially in diesel technology, which is now the fuel of choice in Ireland. Gerry Murphy takes a look at each of the main players in the Fleet/Corporate Sector in relation to what they have to offer for Model Year 2010.

Alfa Romeo Times are tough for the Italian brand, but the arrival of the new MiTo offers the struggling marque a chink of light. It is a charming litt le car, full of fun, style and driving pleasure. As a small premium 3 door hatch it has the credential to challenge the Mini and the Fiat 500 for style. Check out the diesel for economy. For Alfa the other piece of good news is the imminent arrival at the end of the year of the Milano, a replacement MiTo for the 147. Price will be crucial here. It will be loosely based on the Fiat Bravo chassis but will have a higher spec and will have a more sophisticated suspension setup. At the higher end, the 159 has the looks, the driving dynamics, the technology and the style that beats all comers. There is quite a selection of variants on offer but space and price are defi nite minuses. Alfa Romeo has just announced two brand new Euro 5-compliant engines for the Alfa 159 range - the 1750 TBi and the 2.0 JTDM. We can however recommend the 159 Sportwagon, which looks just as good as the saloon and offers the extra luggage space. Again the diesel is the one to pick. Look forward to a new version 159 SW & 159 of its flagship model, the 166.

Audi In the fatherland, no other car company has made such strides as Audi over the last two years. Few cars will match the A4 for ability and now stature. Audi got it right in every department. Inside, outside and under the bonnet, which ever A4 you go for, you will be satisfied. Our favourite is the 2.0litre TDI 120 Sportsline. Move up to the A5 and you have a premium coupé that is a genuine rival the BMW 3 Series Coupé and the Mercedes CLK. Th is is the fi rst contender for our favourite car if we were spending our own money. It is handsome, has a beautiful interior and you’ll love the way it drives. Th ink diesel, think 3.0litre V6 and think Quatt ro for the best of all Worlds. A 5 door Sportsback version of the A5 is due early 2010. Audi has just upgraded the A6. No longer the poor man’s choice, the new A6 can’t be beaten for space, smoothness and refi nement. Like other models in the range, the Audi engine line-up takes some beating. Executive motoring is all the more exciting for its presence and you don’t have to break the bank either, especially for the base models, which start at €42,310. We’re promised the new A7 luxury saloon early next year.

BMW

Citroen

Efficient Dynamics is changing the face and the affordability of the BMW range. It is also responsible for its greener image and improved prices across the brand. However, the BMW dealer network is in a bit of disarray at the moment with some closed, others disenfranchised and BMW importing cars from the UK as part of the Sterling promotion.

The Citroen C5 is the Semperit Irish Car of the Year and for good reason. In better times we would see many more of them on our roads. For fleet buyers the C5 offers all that is best about this type of vehicle. Internally beautiful, externally handsome, the C5, which is only available in diesel is a winner. The Tourer looks even better and you will be hard pressed to find a better

Its most economical and greenest 3 Series ever comes to Ireland in the shape of the new BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Saloon. Described as a new benchmark in the premium segment this car declares impressive figures with CO2 emissions of 109g/km and a combined consumption figure of 4.1 l/100km, that’s Tax band A and annual road tax of €104 – for a BMW! Pricing will mirror the existing standard BMW 320d SE Saloon. BMW state that all reductions in VRT are being passed on to the customer.

finished car in this class. Take a close look at the economy of the PSA HDi engines.

Then there is the 5 Series, the undoubted favourite in the executive car sector. There is a huge choice in the range, but the 520d gives you plenty and it still commands a lot of respect even if some of the competition is closing the gap. A GT model is due for launch soon. A new 7 series has also arrived. Styling has moved on a notch; it is softer than the old one but it lacks nothing in performance and specification. Somehow though, it’s amazing how BMW manages to offer a slightly sporty edge to the driving dynamics of a car of this dimension.

7 Series

C5 Tourer For those in the market for a smaller car, the C4 is often under rated. The Citroen brand is at the start of a major rebirth and like the C5, the C4 is proving to be a frugal motor.

Chrysler There are now two cars in the Chrysler fleet range. It’s hard to see how the Sebring can make much of an impact in the mid-sized company car market with the strength of the alternatives that are out there. It suffers from poor design, a lack of European quality and less than promising resale value. It is however, cheap to buy and if you like American cars, you will appreciate the Sebring.

Sebring

Much better than the Sebring, is the 300C, in either Sedan or the mighty Estate form. The 300C has been around for a few years now and still it makes an impression whenever you see it. It is a big lump of metal but it makes for a solid sedan with awesome space, decent performance and at a price that is a good deal cheaper than some of the more common executive cars. You will need to appreciate American interior design but the space and the cool look just might turn your head.

C4 At the higher level, the C6 is French opulence at its finest. This car was produced by artists, not engineers. Styling is to the forefront and you would expect nothing less from Citroen. Too few have enjoyed the sheer driving pleasure that the C6 offers. A real alternative to the dominant German brands.

Ford

Honda

Ireland’s biggest selling car is the Ford Focus. In tough times people tend to stick to what they know best and what they can trust. Also, Ford is constantly demonstrating a keen eye for customers needs. Check out the new Focus 1.6 TDi, a typical example of the blueoral brand matching the needs of the market delivering 90PS and generating only 118g/km of CO2 . Fuel economy is outstanding at just 4.5l/100km. It could be early 2011 before we see its replacement.

Honda is on the Hybrid track with the Insight, a car that was launched at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. Honda says that the Insight is a practical five-seat family car at an affordable price with excellent fuel economy and low CO2 as well as other emissions. It combines an optimised 1.3 litre i-VTEC engine with a compact thin electric motor, that acts as a generator during deceleration, recovering energy that is otherwise lost as heat from the brakes. Th is energy is stored in the batteries and then used to support the combustion engine during acceleration to save fuel and increase efficiency.

Focus At the next level the Mondeo continues to be the benchmark. Others have come along and tried to match the Mondeo but few can claim the same driving sharpness or the same overall space. Price has also been a key factor to the success and Ford has adjusted the price downwards during the year to maintain competitive. Add in the safety package and you’ll not find a better all-rounder. The 2.0-litre diesel is the best choice and if you are in the market for an estate you’ll not fi nd more space in any other station wagon in the segment.

Mondeo

Insight

Recently, Honda has been at the top of a number of customer satisfaction surveys and the Accord is the star of the show. Both saloon and the very special Tourer have an executive feel and sit at the top of the sector ladder. You will pay over Accord Tourer & Saloon €30,000 for either the 2.0-litre i-VTEC or the favoured 2.2-litre i-DTEC diesel but you do get the specification to match and that vital reliability. Earlier this year the Civic underwent a mid-life upgrade with a new 1.4 engine equipped with Honda’s i-VTEC technology, which reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as well as increasing torque and power outputs over the previous 1.4 unit.

Civic

Hyundai Hyundai’s sales have been taking a hit in the weakened market. It’s ‘i’ range, namely the i10, i20 and i30 should be on most people’s enquiry list, but the flame has receded with the economy. Strange really as the value for money ‘tag’ is there but they have serious competition, not least from their sister brand, Kia. However, in the D segment Hyundai has an advantage. The Sonata is one of these cars that we can confidently commend to fleet buyers. If you are after size, value and lots of equipment, you’ll not fi nd many to match. Check out the 2.0-litre 150bhp diesel as the best choice. Look closely at the price and the specification before you decide to buy. A word of warning though, check out resale prices too.

Jaguar Our depleted economy could not have come at a worse time for Jaguar. Now under Tata ownership and with the old image well and truly parked in the past the downturn is as welcome as a dose of the swine flu. That said, the new Jags - XF and XJ - are sublime in their design and glorious to drive. Perhaps Jaguar has a better chance of survival now than at any time in its recent past. Indian company Tata is a big car producer with a positive growth graph and it might just be the right parent at the right time. Irish motoring journalists voted the XF as the best luxury car in 2009. So too did most other commentators and it is a title that is richly deserved. Buyers will love the opulent interior and the many innovative gadgets but can also benefit from all that luxury without being too greedy by choosing the excellent 2.7-litre diesel. Without going over the top this is the best Jaguar ever.

XF

Recently Jaguar has announced the imminent arrival of the XJ, the eagerly awaited substitute for the old dinosaur that it replaces. Its looks follow on from the XF and Jaguar’s new 3-litre AJ-V6 GEN III diesel engine will be the most sought-after. Performance is promising and figures show that it will go from 0-100kph in 6.4 seconds, with Fuel Economy of up to 7.0I/100km (40.1mpg) and CO2 emissions of 184g/km. At a lower level, the X-Type is to be discontinued but there are still some stocks available. The Mondeo in Jaguar clothing might prove to be a good deal right now – talk to your dealer about the X-Type saloon or estate.

Lexus

Mazda

Here’s another car manufacturer suffering at the hands of the recession (sorry!). The Toyota owned luxury marque is probably suffering too from the dominance of the big German producers although it’s range can proudly stand beside any of IS250 them. Take the IS for example. It is the best looking and best proportioned Lexus. The new IS220d has few critics and the IS250 rides like a much more expensive motor and the 2.5-litre V6 engine is a gem.

Really, Mazda sales should reflect the quality of the product much better than they do. Reliability and driving dynamics are two of Mazda’s greatest qualities. You also get excellent build quality, the best of any Japanese car and while the engine range is limited, it is well-chosen and sufficiently broad for today’s market.

The GS range too, is an outstanding chariot. You get the chance here to ease your rgreen conscience by choosing the GS450h, the only luxury hybrid in this bracket at this time. The batteries do restrict the amount of boot space but the performance is quite GS astonishing and very, very smooth. Speaking of smooth, the LS is incredibly smooooooth! It also offers some unique features like the 8-speed automatic gearbox, extraordinary levels of equipment and the most luxurious interior you can LS imagine. The LS600h, hybrid version should also come into the reckoning for those who can afford it. The planet will appreciate it.

There is a new Mazda3 on the way. It looks better than the old one and the interior is much improved too. Mazda has been using weight reduction as one of their many ways of reducing CO 2 emissions and that is the case too with the new Mazda3. You can still get a good deal on Mazda 3 the outgoing Mazda3. Mazda dealers will sell you one for under €17,000. In the D segment, few cars drive as well as the Mazda6. Not only does it enjoy impeccable handling there is an added hint of sportiness that you don’t get from other family saloons. You get five-star EuroNCAP safety standards, good looks and ample space. Put it on your ‘To Mazda 6 Try’ list. While you’re at it, take a close look at the eye-catching estate. As good-looking as the saloon, the estate is even more fetching and very functional. Take a spin in the new 2.2 litre TS2 diesel.

Mercedes-Benz I’m tempted to say the Mercedes-Benz is back, but back from where? It is more accurate to say that Mercedes has moved on. The range seems to have jumped a generation into the future and leading from the front with the arrival of a number of new models in the last couple of years. You should also ask about the BlueEfficiency models if you are eco conscious.

E Class

The C-Class is now at the same fighting weight as the C Class BMW 3-Series. Indeed, it is a more stylish fighter and the new look on the Avantgarde version with the badge in the centre of the grille really works. But it is in the driving seat that most of the improvements are noticeable. It is sharp, nimble and yet very plush. From a wide selection of variants, the C220 CDi scores highly.

CLS

Moving on to the new E-Class, this too is now a worthy contender and it is priced sensibly while delivering a much better package than the old one. Styling takes in some traditional lines with new lamp placements and additional curves that will satisfy Mercedes fans and embrace modernity. Some might say that it doesn’t work, others are ambivalent enough about it. See details of the new estate elsewhere in this edition.

For sheer class, the CLS has the lot: great looks, driving dynamics and opulence aplenty. It isn’t an out and out sports coupé, it is more refi ned than that, but in sports mode – you can choose between sports and comfort – it does deliver some punch even if it’s not a knockout. Then there is the S Class, the ultimate flagship.

Mitsubishi

Opel

Some say that mid-sized three box saloons always seem to be boring. The Mitsubishi Lancer blows that generalisation out of the

Now that its future seems to be more certain, Opel is one automaker that hasn’t been hanging around waiting for the upturn that will inevitably arrive. Indeed, the debate about its future is a bit of a side show and maybe even a bit of a millstone on the quayside. But Opel is not in deep water just yet and new models and exciting new developments point to better times ahead.

Lancer water. Here is a snappy looking motor that drives well and sits neatly in the driveway. You can also expect flawless reliability from one of Japan’s biggest companies. Internally, the Lancer is more practical than polished. Boot space is generous and it comes at a reasonable price. Overall the Lancer is well worth a second look.

Insignia has been a revelation for Opel. It is an enormous success and a complete sea change from the old one. It romped home as European Car of the Year and will be a serious contender for Semperit Irish Car of the Year later this year. In the most competitive sector in the car market the Insignia can be talked about as a top-of-the-class car. Rear passenger space is its only drawback, but it can be relegated in significance by all the other plus points including: sharp looks, driving pleasure and equipment levels. Estate buyers should also look into the many positives of the Insignia Sports Insignia Tourer – it’s a stunner. Opel’s trusty Astra will be replaced at the end of this year too. The new one has a decent reputation to live up to but we can expect another big step forward too. First images show us that the 2010 Astra is styled along the same lines as the Insignia and interior images suggest an equally stylish cabin as the bigger car. We have yet to see images of the estate version, but again we can make educated assumptions that it too will be a handsome vehicle.

Insignia Tourer

Opel’s environmental credentials are pinned on the development of the Ampera. It is a different type of hybrid that can extend the electric option of the car over a greater range – up to 500 kilometers. Interesting times ahead for Opel!

Lancer Sportsback

Astra

Peugeot Peugeot is one company that has been to the fore with further developments of diesel technology and diesel hybrids. Economy and diesel know-how are its strengths that we will see much more of in the very near future. Indeed, we are seeing the fruits of its labour now with some of the most frugal diesel cars around. Take the 308 as a good example. The Peugeot 308 1.6 litre HDi 110bhp diesel hatchback was recently used to set a new world record for fuel consumption. Of course that was under strict conditions, but it proves the point. Peugeot has also been the leading low CO2 car company in Europe, for the third year in a row. The 308 is available in estate form; the 308SW can be had with seven seats too.

308

In the D segment, Peugeot’s 407 is still a favourite with those who love French cars. Diesel is again the clever choice here. They have been adding additional equipment and offering special deals recently which add to the value of the car. Here again the 407SW is a real head-turner and for estate fans the big Peugeot family estate offers a wider range of options than many in the class.

BUYERS GUIDE

Renault We hear that Renault is becoming a lot more active in the fleet sector of late. The forward-looking French giant has been sleeping a little in the Irish market recently. All is changing. Renault has a very fresh catalogue of cars with the Megane and the Laguna both in the first flush of youth. A lot of testing and effort has been put in to making the new Laguna reliable. Anecdotal evidence suggests that it has succeeded and Renault offers a three year warranty on the back of that. It has one of the best diesels around; the 1.5-litre dCi is used across its car and light commercial range and has proved to be a little gem. A 2.0-litre dCi is also used if you want more power and a good estate version if you want more room.

Laguna

The Megane is also fairly new. The old Megane divided opinion for looks, so the much better looking new version is globally Megane more appealing. Competition at this level is fierce and the Megane certainly make its own statement. While there are cars that are sharper to drive, French car fans will understand where the Megane is coming from. The diesel advice from the Laguna is equally relevant here for the economy conscious.

Saab

Life at Saab has been somewhat shaky of late but with the recent takeover by Koenigsegg will have helped to stabilize its future and a large dollop of cash should ensure survival. An all-new 9-5 saloon is on the way and Saab says that it signals the dawn of a new era for the Swedish brand. There will be a choice of three fuels – petrol, diesel and E85 bioethanol – and with diesel power, the new 9-5 offers CO2 emissions as low as 139 g/km. There might be a deal to be had for the existing version if you are quick. Here’s another brand where the estates versions are better looking than the saloon. Saab has also being working hard with the 9-3. Prices have been trimmed and both the saloon and the TiD range of diesels along with the 1.8-litre bioethanol engine offer an interesting choice to Saab Range would-be customers. Check out the Aero versions of the estate for some extras that include performance brakes, 17” alloys and bi-xenon headlights and some visual features inside and out.

Seat

Exeo ST

FLEETCAR | Winter 2009

Seat will shortly introduce the Exeo. As part of the Volkswagen family, Seat will take over the blueprint of the old Audi A4 and slap a Seat badge on it and sell it as a Seat Exeo. The good thing is that the price should be a lot less than it was when Audi was selling it. It all sounds very clever and those who know and like the old A4 should also fancy the Exeo. It also gives Seat a chance to compete in the D Segment again. The estate version, called the ST, looks even better than the saloon and with the anti-SUV campaign getting stronger by the day, estate cars like these are becoming more attractive.

Skoda

Toyota

Skoda cannot be ignored when searching for sensible fleet transport. Any analysis shows that Skoda can challenge all comers with its expanding range of cars. Take a look at the extent of the range and the huge list of variants on offer.

Now more than ever, reliability becomes a very important parameter. When times are tight, cost of ownership has got to take higher priority. Toyota cars generally excel in the dependability department and that is why the brand has been so successful in Ireland for so long.

The Octavia’s status is now legendry. Build quality, space and bullet proof reliability are the virtues that have built that reputation. Across the range there is something for everyone. All the VW family goodies are available such as the DGS gearbox. Even those looking for something sportier could do worse than test the vRS. The estate is the most spacious in this class too.

Maybe some of the sports genes have be taken out of the Toyota range but Corolla and Auris owners will tell you that they are satisfied with their lot. Toyota cars are notoriously easy to own and run. Both offer sufficient space, a reliable range of engines Corolla that are competitive both economically and ecologically.

Octavia

One of my favourite cars this year is the all-new Superb. It has a clever combination boot/hatchback that works perfectly well for those that want a traditional boot or those that prefer a hatch. But there’s a lot more to this car. It whips everything else in the D segment for space, price and Superb value for money. It is an excellent car by any measurement, one to seriously examine. An estate version is due late 2009.

Subaru

Avensis

Welcome to the fleet scene, Subaru. Up to now the brand was not really a serious contender for business user customers. Since Subaru developed the new flat four-cylinder Boxer diesel engine, that’s now fitted in all Subaru’s, all that has changed. Take a close look at the value that the Subaru Impresa represents. Scan down through the specification, don’t forget the Symmetrical AWD and you won’t find anything around in the same category to match it. The 2.0-litre Boxer diesel engine is a great performer with superb power and now that the Impresa has changed its shape to a hatchback, Impresa it is practical too. Legacy is now Boxer diesel too. In saloon, Sports Tourer and Outback the range is more attractive and deserves a close look. Again specification is impressive and here again the Symmetrical AWD is a real bonus.

The new Avensis is a fi ne motor. It is a giant step forward in the looks department and you get the space you would expect from an Avensis, albeit not quite as enormous as the old model. Th is new one drives better and is far more stylish. So many satisfied customers can’t all be wrong. Station wagon fans will also love the Tourer.

Prius And one fi nal thought. There’s a new Prius on the way, the third generation of Toyotas enormously successful Hybrid. The previews are promising. It should be on every fleet manager’s checklist.

BUYERS GUIDE

Volkswagen One could be very blasé about Volkswagen and pass the brand of as a builder of fi ne motor cars and tell you about build quality and reliability. That would be under-selling the famous marque and would be unjust. You see there’s a lot more Volkswagen than that. Why do you think that the Golf is held up as the benchmark for all other family hatch backs to match? Simply, it has been the standard bearer for six generations now and while others – even the top brands - sometimes meet the criteria, few if any, do it as consistently. The new GTI has just been launched along with a new GTD, either will prove the point.

Golf

We will mention the Jett a in passing. While it is a stand-alone model, it really is a Golf with a boot. Enough said.

Jetta

And what about the Passat? It has been around awhile now but still sets the standard. Before you go anywhere else, check out the new Passat BlueMotion and then try to find a more economical car in the same sector. You could be looking for a while. Particularly pleasing to the eye is the Passat Estate, which meets every examination an estate owner might require.

Passat BlueMotion

Volvo It is tempting to talk about the Volvo Estates before we mention the cars. Probably because Volvo has been making estates longer than anyone else. At home in Sweden they love their ‘wagons’ and Volvo is the experts in the field. The V50, like the S40 car version has been given a facelift recently. Both are out and out Volvo in looks and safety, and S40 both are now available in 1.6D DRIVe featuring the new Start/ V40 Stop technology and a host of other green features. Volvo claims that the S40 DRIVe puts out CO 2 emissions of just 104g/km and will return up to 3.9L/ 100Km on the combined cycle. At the upper level, Volvo offers the S60 (there’s a new one in the offi ng as is the C30 3 door) and V70. Higher still is the S80 which has also received an upgrade. All three are exceptionally well put together and while rear seat space is somewhat limited, occupants will know that they are in a very comfortable car and as you would expect with Volvo, a very safe place.

S60

V70 S80 Worth a mention too!

New entrants to the family car classification list is the Chevrolet Cruze 5 door, Infi niti G37, revised KIA cee’d hatch and estate, and at the upper end the all new Porsche Panamera.

IAA gets off to a flying start with 100 World Premieres •

President Merkel opens the World‘s most important trade show for mobility

“781 exhibitors from 30 countries - these figures underline the fact there is probably no other automotive trade show anywhere in the world offering such an impressive and glittering display of innovations as this IAA! And this is happening when the economy is in difficulty! Here it is actually becoming visible how the companies are coming out of the crisis: with even greater research and development efforts and with even more att ractive products!” stressed Matt hias Wissmann, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). “We have given this IAA the slogan ‘A Moving Experience.’ And it is this trade show where for the first time visitors can see a study of the 1-litre car bound for volume market. And when the IAA has a model in the luxury segment on display here for the first time that will consume three litres, that is another milestone on the path towards sustainable mobility

Audi Taking centre stage on the impressive Ingolstadt brand is the new Audi A5 Sportsback. No ordinary version was displayed here as the new 5-door coupé is propelled by a supercharged 3.0 litre V6 that delivers 333PS. Also premiered is Audi’s 3.0 TDi clean diesel engine fitted to the A4 while the new 105PS 1.2 TFSI specified on the A3 and A3 Sportsback now offers over 50 mpg

– without sacrificing safety, comfort or performance,” he emphasized. He added that the progress made by the companies – manufacturers and suppliers alike – in pushing up fuel efficiency, in reducing CO2 emissions and with them consumption, in equipping vehicles with highly innovative driver assistance systems, and therefore also in vehicle safety on show at this IAA was “clear evidence of the speed of innovation and the dynamism that is characteristic of this key industry.” He drew attention to the activities on the open-air site, which include the IAA’s eco-training, test drives, an off-road circuit and the outdoor go-kart track. “The premieres, specialist events and special activities make the IAA program so wide-ranging and varied that really one day at the exhibition is hardly long enough to have the full ‘Moving Experience’.”

Bentley First launched in Monterey, California, the new Bentley Mulsanne made its show debut in Frankfurt. Inspired by the 8-litre model from the 1930s this new flagship makes the fi rst big Bentley to be designed, engineered and built from the ground up by Bentley engineers since then. The Bentley Mulsanne will go on sale from mid-2010.

BMW

Citroen

Fiat

The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics was the centrepiece of the BMW stand. Its unique powertrain, ground-breaking performance potential and exo-skeletal style bodywork crafted from aerodynamic knowledge gained in Formula One set it apart from anything previously seen. The vehicle has been designed to be capable of recording 75.1mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 99g/km.

DS3 will be the fi rst model from Citroen’s new DS line – a product range consisting of 3 distinctively styled, attention-seeking models. DS3 is a radical take on the compact urban vehicle and a welcome breath of fresh air in the class. One of its distinctive features is its floating roof available in four colours to contrast with the main body colour of the car.

As expected an evolution of the Grande Punto, the Fiat Punto Evo was premiered. Work done by Fiat’s Centro Stile sees the successful supermini gain some enhanced modification to the exterior and interior. Some felt that the changes have been overdone and the fi nal design lines of the previous model were less complicated and more att ractive. All engines will meet Euro 5 standards.

Ford

Hyundai

Taking its design cues from the IOSIS MAX concept unveiled at this year’s Geneva Show, the new C-MAX continues the ‘kinetic-design’ theme of current Ford models. New technologies include a 1.6 litre EcoBoost direct injection petrol engine. Semi-automatic parallel parking and blind spot detection system are also included. Expect to see these on the New Focus due late 2010.

Revealed for the fi rst time, the Hyundai ix35 is an all-new C-segment crossover that will replace the popular Tucson SUV. Due to its pronounced hexagonal grille, the ix35 fits into the Hyundai family frontal design ‘look’. The Korean company is looking to the future in an alternative way with the reveal of electric and hybrids.

Kia

Lexus

New look Cee’d, Sorento and the initial introduction of the all new Venga ensured that the Kia stand was kept very busy. Designed, engineered and manufactured in the EU, the Venga features an unusual long wheelbase and also Stop/Start technology 1.4 and 1.6 litre petrol and diesel engines will power this new urban run-around. The new Cee’d is 25mm longer and will also have Stop/Start system.

Another world premiere in the shape of the Lexus LF-Ch – a new full hybrid compact concept. An update version of the LS model range plus model year changes to the GS, IS and ISF were also present. LF-Ch has a practical 5-door body that benefits from Lexus Hybrid Drive System. Th is allows for virtually silent urban driving with zero emissions. LS gets exterior and interior revisions as well as updated equipment levels.

Mercedes-Benz

Mouthwatering Maserati GranCabrio – if only we had the weather (and the money!) GranCabrio is the Fiat Group owned brand’s first four-seater convertible. Styled by Pininfarina, GranCabrio is powered by a 4.7 litre V8, 323 kw engine and boasts the longest wheelbase on the market. Incidentally, its roof is strictly canvas made, emphasizing the link with Maserati tradition.

Featuring the new Mazda ‘family fall’ as seen on the Mazda 6 and Mazda 3 the new Mazda CX-7 displayed here also comes with a SCR based diesel engine. Refi lls of the AdBlue liquid to the SCR system are required only during scheduled maintenance, promises Mazda. Th is technology has been used by truck manufacturers since Euro 4 emission controls were imposed.

BlueZERO E-CELL plus is the next to near production petrol-electric hybrid from Mercedes-Benz. It aims to combine zero emission city driving with long-distance range. Offering a total range of up to 370 miles the five-door hatchback version is part of a three-car package with different eco-drive system configurations – E-CELL/F-CELL/ECELLPLUS. www.fleetcar.ie | Winter 2009

Premiered among others was Fluence, designed with the aim of standing out as the most att ractive car of its class. Fluence has several features that will set it apart from rivals: beneath its strong, sporting exterior. It targets customers looking for a status-enhancing saloon and will be built on the existing assembly line at the Oyak-Renault plant in Bursa, Turkey, where the previous Mégane II saloon was produced.

Looking at the stats presented by Rolls Royce on the unveiling of the Ghost left many of the visitors surprised. Seat

With General Motors and Koengsegg Group agreeing on the sale of Saab, the Swedish manufacturer is progressing ahead with the all- new Saab 9-5. “The car is the start of a new era for our brand,” said JanAke Jonsson, Saab Automobile’s Managing Director. “We are giving a fresh, very modern expression to some of our classic brand design cars,” added Simon Padian, Saab Brand Design Chief.

Described as the ‘most potent model to date’, the new Leon Cupra R from Seat is also the Spanish marque’s performance flagship. In fact, the New Leon 2.0 TSI 265 PS has performance to match its successful touring car brother. Grey alcantava upholstery, white LED lighting on the instrument dials, leather steering and aluminium pedals complete the sporty theme.

Interesting development from Skoda with the addition of an estate version to the superb range. Combining practicality with good looks and value for money the Superb Estate follows on from the hatchback, which has found over 42,000 owners since launch just over a year ago. Space and reliability and economical to own and run will be the estate’s selling points.

Following the introduction of the Auris HSD Full Hybrid Concept, Toyota has taken hybrid technology to a new level. A plug-in charge facility has now been added. 150 Prius Plug-in Hybrid Concept vehicles are to go on extensive field trials across Europe. Selected fleet customers will lease same, a number of which are destined for the UK and possibly Ireland.

Featuring the same sharp lines as its 5-door brother, the new Volkswagen Polo in 3-door form sports a more creative stance. It shares the same platform and dimensions as the 5-door, but looks lower and wider. Built at VW’s Pamplona factory in Spain, the 3-door edition will enter production in right-hand-drive form in late October. The 5-door will be launched here this month.

Apart from an ‘R-Design’ version of the XC60, the Volvo exhibition area presented the latest model C70. At its launch in 2006, the original version broke new ground as the fi rst 4-seater convertible with a retractable hard top. n celebrating its 50th birthday this year, the timing of this book Mini Cooper by Graham Robson is perfect. Irish rally fans still hold the ‘works-Cooper’ with great affection when in the hands of Paddy Hopkink. Famous victories were achieved in Monte Carlo (1964), Austrian Alpine (1966), Acropolis & French Alpine (1967). Closer to home, Paddy along with Terry Harryman recorded wins in the Circuit of Ireland in 1965 and 1967.

I

n the mid-90s the British Touring Car Championship reached its peak with works entries from leading manufacturers going beyond double figures. While Vauxhall, Ford, Honda and Seat battled it out in recent years, the glory days of BMW, Alfa Romeo, Audi, Renault, Nissan and Volvo competing door-todoor still remains fresh in my mind having attended a number of races ‘across the water’ and also when held in Mondello Park. But what happened in the various circuits around the UK in the years before that? Peter Collins’ book British Touring Car Racing -covers ‘from the wheelarch flares of the late 1960s to the turbos of 1990’. There are 96 pages of action packed trackside drama from the Mini to Ford Sierra RS500. Lola Chairman and Mayo Native Martin Birrane’s 7-litre Ford Mustang from the 1970/71 season, gets a mention or two. One of the most featured cars is the Ford Capri, looking resplendent in race colours. All the more significant as the iconic Ford Coupe celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. More details on www.veloce.co.uk

Facing up against much bigger cars such as the Ford Cortina GT/Lotus Cortina, Porsche 911, Lancia Fulvia HF, the Mini Cooper’s superb handling was down to its size and front-wheel drive system, not to mention race car construction John Cooper’s valuable input. Ironically, Cooper’s original inspiration for the Mini was circuit racing, and true to form that would happen later. The works Minis won the Monte Carlo three times along with the European Rally Championship in 1965 but also won events around the world. Brand owners BML hired Ken Tyrrell’s team to run two works-supported Mini Cooper S-types in the European Saloon Car Championship in 1964. One of the drivers Warwick Banks easily won his class and the European Championship. The Mini Motorsport success trail was on a roll. New AUDI ID

T

he way the Audi brand is visually depicted across all media is set to change this month as reworked designs for its famous interlocking rings logo and the Audi ‘identifier’ beneath it remodel its corporate identity for the first time since 1995. According to Audi, ”The new look has been

achieved through the adoption of a clean and modern new font for the Audi script and a more imposing new 3D treatment for the four rings. This new v isual identity has

already been a feature of a number of print and billboard campaigns, in conjunction with the recently adopted ‘pure and clear’ execution for Audi creative concepts. The new execution uses simple light or white spaces and images to complement the understated style for which the Audi range is famous.”

TEST 1

Mercedes-Benz E-Class 220 CD1 Avantgarde

T

he Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been around in one form or another for over 60 years. Its roots can be traced back as for as 1947 when the 170V model became the fi rst Mercedes-Benz passenger car to enter production in the post-War years. But it was not until 1984 that the code-named W124 model saloon was officially named the E-Class. Now the ninth generation, just launched, features some of the design traits of by-gone editions. Its rear wings are reminiscent to the second generation ‘threebox-body’ styling while the twin-headlamps carry on the trademark appearance since fi rst introduced on the 1984 model. Cars in this ‘executive’ segment have often been described as Limo’s due to their popularity in political and corporate sectors. In German, it actually means ‘saloon’. The defi nition of the word in this sense is ‘closed car’. But the origins of the word travels to the Limousin Region of France as well as ‘waggoner’ from this region. The waggoners named their traditional coats after the region where they lived. Th is was how the actual meaning of the word – Limousine – ‘wide and large protective coat’ – was developed. Which, in essence, is the best way to describe the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Quality materials and manufacture. Warm and safe. Excellent value for money. It is with the latter that I start with – due to the serious downturn in new car sales, led to importers/distribution taking drastic measures by reducing retail prices. MercedesBenz Ireland for example, knocked off on average €20,000 across the E-Class range. Now, for €43,600 one can buy the entry level E-Class, the E220 CDI. With that you get Direct Control suspension with selective damping system. But with the Avantgarde as driven, the suspension sett ing comes with sporty tuning. When it comes to being enveloped in a safe environment, the E-Class excels. Attention Assist is a drowsiness detection system while the Night View Assist Plus and Lane Tracking package also helps drivers to intervene before a collision can occur. Then there’s Distronic Plus that ensures the driver maintains the desired distance between the car and the vehicle in front. Adaptive Highbeam Assist improves visibility by automatically dimming the main beam for oncoming traffic. The E220 CDI is powered by a 2.2 litre, biturbo, common rail direct injection engine which delivers 400 Nm of torque with a top speed of 229 kms and a 0-100 km/h time of 8.0 seconds. It has fuel consumption of 6.9

litres/100km (urban cycle) and CO2 rating of 139 g/km. With a drag coefficient of only 0.25, the New E-Class is the world’s most aerodynamically efficient luxury saloon. All engines consume less fuel with consumption down by up to 20% and have emissions within strict Euro 5 guidelines. It’s advanced env ironmental compatibility and economy, is joined by outstanding safety and comfort features. For long distance drivers, comfort levels have been improved all round. Rigidity has been increased by up to 30% while seating too has been improved and driving pleasure has been enhanced thanks to a newly developed suspension fitted with shock absorbers that automatically adjust to driving conditions. Through direct injection and turbo charging, newly developed 4-cylinder engines deliver higher output and torque than the comparable V6 engine of the preceding series, despite the smaller displacement. A not her redeem i ng feature of the New E-Class is that a recent study by German researchers, Bahr & Fess predict that the New E-Class E250 CDi version will be worth 62.5% of its current value in three years.

TEST 11

Peugeot 308 Ecomatique

D

id you know that the Peugeot 308 HDi 110 bhp turbo diesel secured its place in the Guinness Book of Records recently? Initially, husband and wife John and Helen Taylor set two world records in their standard 308 hatchback on a 25 day, 14,580 km journey around the coast of Australia. During their record run they achieved an amazing 1,919 km on just 60 litres of diesel, which averaged out at 3.13 litres/100 kms or almost 92 mpg. More recently, the the duo circumnavigated the UK in a similar Peugeot 308 HDi with an amazing average economy of 2.23 litres / 100km (126.8mpg). Travelling over 5954km in 175 hours, they used just 29.1 gallons or 132 litres of diesel. Co-incidentally, Peugeot held the record up until then as a Peugeot 307 hatchback set 3.49L/100 kms in 2004.

Irish motorists can sample the efficiencies of the latest Peugeot diesel engine technology with the new 308 Ecomatique which not only offers lower fuel consumption but lower emissions too. The new 308 SE 1.6 HDi 110 bhp Ecomatique 5-door model which retails

from €24,256 (ex-works) qualifies for the lowest Band A annual road tax of €104. With consumers under more pressure than ever to manage all aspects of the family budget, the new 308 Ecomatique 1.6 HDi 110 bhp boasts consumption savings of a further 12% compared to the already low B Rate-emission manual diesel model and retails at a lower price, thanks to its low CO 2 emissions and subsequent VRT Band A rate of 14%. What’s so significant about this version of the 308 in contributing to its fuel economy is the new 6 speed electronically controlled automated transmission? As with fully automatic shift s there is no clutch pedal thereby appealing to drivers who like to change gear manually, but also avail of the stressfree driving provided by the electronically controlled shift . For the manual mode, the driver just fl icks the gearlever to the side and then moves the lever forward and back to progress up and down the gears in sequential fashion. While the gear change would not be as slick as what’s on offer from lets say the Volkswagen Group’s highly acclaimed DSG autobox, the Ecomatique does its job in its own time. It will not take the driver long to get into its workings and benefit from the comforts that it offers.

curtain bags. From the 1,000 kilometre run combined fuel consumption hovered around 5.0L/100 kms which equates to around 57 mpg. David McConnell, Managing Director of Gowan Distributors said at the launch of this new model that its timing is perfect for the changing Irish Motor Industry, “The arrival of the 308 Ecomatique is an important addition to the Peugeot stable, offering consumers in Ireland a real possibility of enjoying an automatic driving experience without the stigma of high CO2 emissions and subsequent high motoring taxes under the new regime.” On the impressive fuel economy of the 308 David added; “For a while now we’ve been telling customers that our low-CO 2 Peugeot vehicles are very economical and fuel efficient. Th is most recent achievement by John and Helen Taylor fully illustrates the potential savings by driving and purchasing wisely. Peugeot’s long term commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its vehicles has paid huge dividends. Sales figures in 2008 placed Peugeot at the very top as the leading low CO2 car company in Europe, for the third year in a row.”

Mentioning comforts, this version comes with Air-Con, front fogs, ABS with Brake Assist and driver/ passenger/side/ 26 FLEETCAR | Winter 2009
