Home is where you can be you I am writing this column from a plane 10 kilometres above the ground, on my way to India to prepare for our 2016 Spring/Summer collection. In our profession, we work more than a year ahead, much like the fashion industry. Even before spring is in full swing, we are already developing our ideas for next year's summer collection. That's nice for our brainspace; when you're already heading towards summer in your head, it translates well into the collection. It's simply harder to come up with Christmas decorations in July. We have a lot of textiles made in India, since they do a great job on textiles there. Nico, our Creative Director, designs most of the pillows and throws. He also browses local markets every season to find the cutest fabrics, buttons and accessories for the thematic collections. We also have a lot of accessories made in India out of (mostly) recycled aluminium, and gorgeous wooden furniture, like the cupboards with white shutters, and wooden accessories like serving trays. We've been working a lot with mango wood lately, which comes from the mango tree. It's nice material to work with. The tree grows fairly quickly, and the wood is much harder than for instance pine. You can make really beautiful things from mango wood. All the wood we use comes from plantations or is recycled and repurposed, what is known as reclaimed wood. I estimate that about 75% of our collection is made by hand. There is nothing better in our field than experiencing a production process like ours up close and personal. This trip is mainly about evaluating the new samples made based on our design sketches, that we sent to the various small factories and studios in recent months. These samples are ready for us to check out at our agent's offices in an outlying neighbourhood of Delhi. After viewing the samples, we will spend a few days at a trade fair looking for new manufacturers to produce our ideas. I am well aware of how privileged I am to be able to do this. Who else gets to travel all over the world on business, creating beautiful things with local craftsmen? During our travels, we always try to sample the local atmosphere for inspiration. Last year, for example, we visited the famous Spice Market in Old Delhi, which truly feels like stepping into the Arabian Nights. It's simply impossible to describe the full impact of that sensory experience: ox carts driving beside modern cars, cows ambling unobstructed through busy traffic, and those amazing smells of the spices sold there. Fantastic! Delhi is a fascinating city, an incredible palette of diverse influences. As soon as you land, you can smell the distinctive aromas of this exceptional country. This summer, Rivièra Maison is all about Ramatuelle, the seaside resort near St. Tropez. St. Tropez does not have a beach of its own, so the nearby town of Ramatuelle has taken on this role. Ramatuelle is home to the world's most famous beach clubs, like Tahiti Plage, Nikki Beach, and of course the legendary Club 55 where the rich and powerful go to have lunch when they drop anchor and leave their yacht to come ashore for a bit. The Club 55 boat offers a personal pick-up service. It's amazing to watch and fun to guess which celebrity will be arriving this time. This beach club gained global fame thanks to Roger Vadim's cinematic hit 'Et Dieu ... créa la femme', which catapulted a very young Brigitte Bardot to the status of sex symbol and world-renowned film star. Ms. Bardot still lives nearby; well into her 80s, she rarely makes public appearances these days.

We used to take our children on holiday to St. Tropez and Ramatuelle when they were young, but we haven't been back as a family since we discovered Ibiza. I've resolved to go back again soon, since St. Tropez is a huge inspiration. The market on Tuesday and Saturday morning is especially fun, held on the Place des Lices square in the middle of the village. I've mentioned Ibiza frequently in this column... our little slice of paradise. When we visited for the first time, about 10 years ago, we were completely sold. This will be our home away from home, we decided after just a few weeks. It felt so right. We have a holiday home there now, which makes it possible for us to head to the island whenever we have time, even in the winter. It's fairly nice weather in winter, although the evenings are chilly due to rising damp. Ibiza is an island, after all. But when it gets colder, we light a fire in the fireplace and my Saskia cooks the most delicious dishes. Ibiza is trendy and happening, but we prefer the authentic Ibiza with its little beaches and bays, the simple restaurants and gorgeous nature; it's so green there! In the midst of the tourist throngs, you can still come across goats and a goat herd heading down a country road in the heat of summer. When we're there, I love being the first one up. I creep out of bed in the morning and sit outside on the veranda, sipping an espresso macchiato and daydreaming. That's when my best ideas come to life. The cats come running as soon as they hear me stirring; we have several stray cats who drop by for a snack every day in the summer. Locals warned us not to encourage them by offering food, but they seem so grateful to have it, and they have to survive by themselves the rest of the year anyway.
100% handmade in Vietnam. The idea for it came five years ago when I was in Beirut on business. We were planning to work with a local partner to launch an RM store, but the war in Syria and the resulting unrest in Lebanon caused those plans to be put on hold for the time being. We were in a French restaurant and I saw the baguettes standing there in a wicker shopping basket. I took a photo of it, and this basket is a derivative of that snapshot. The robust trunks made of rattan with a lid of reclaimed teak wood is fantastic, and it's convenient too. Who doesn't have stuff to store? The transparent collapsible plastic ‘Chill with Some Wine Cooler' on page 26 will definitely be going along to Ibiza, but the hard plastic craquelĂŠ plates that we've done in three colours are also a must-have. The sunscreen is wonderful; our family tested it themselves last summer, so apply it lavishly and enjoy a fantastic summer! And remember: Home is where you can be you!
Even before the kids wake up, I drive over to Jesus, the nearest village, about 5 km away through the mountains, to get fresh bread. Sure, we have pre-baked baguettes in the freezer that I could pop in the oven, but I love that drive through the mountains to our tiny local supermarket, where they're starting to recognise me. The sun shines brightly and time is not an issue. It never is on Ibiza. Jesus is one of those nondescript towns that tourists don't bother to visit, but that is exactly why I think it's so fun and authentic. Every once in a while, before I go do my shopping, I grab a cortado (that's the Spanish version of an espresso macchiato) at Bon Lloc, a local Spanish restaurant on the corner, which has a small veranda out front. It's mainly patronised by the locals (Ibicencos, as the island's inhabitants are called), who sit there sipping coffee or a cold beer. It doesn't look like much, but that is part of what makes it so charming. The television is always on, preferably showing football; if you don't feel like cooking, you can get a tasty grilled chicken in the evening. Sometimes happiness is very easy to find. The photos in this magazine were also taken on Ibiza. It's quite an undertaking to get everything present on site, but Nico knows all the best spots by now and it's worth a lot to get the most beautiful shots. We go there with a complete Dutch crew and spend four days working really hard, but it's also a very special, cosy feeling, that sense of family par excellence: that is characteristic of Rivièra Maison. Saskia goes along and takes care of our culinary needs, does the grocery shopping, cooks for the whole team and lets Nico know about the very best spots to photograph. They always come back from a trip like that completely exhausted and immensely inspired. If I can pick favourites from this summer's collection, the first one that comes to mind is the bread basket made from water hyacinth,

A peek inside the home of
Nick & Kirsten Schilder Last year, the time had finally come: Nick and Kirsten Schilder's dream house was done and they could finally move into the villa that had been decorated according to their precise preferences. After the birth of their children, Nikki (4) and Julian (2), they discovered a growing need for more space, primarily room for the children to play. Once they had listed all their preferences for a new home, they found their perfect spot right there in the village of Volendam, not far from where they already lived. "It's not that I would never be able to leave here," Nick explains, "but Volendam is a wonderful place to live; great facilities and enough room for the children." Nick is half of the Dutch pop duo Nick & Simon. Jaap Buijs, the man who has meant so much to their musical careers, laid the first stone for this gorgeous villa in the newer part of Volendam. The villa was built and decorated completely according to their own taste: sleek, spacious, using beautiful and bold materials. The space and amazing access to natural daylight are striking as soon as you enter. The generous living room and open kitchen are modern and sparsely furnished. The home has loads of charm and atmosphere, even so, and the warm hospitality in this family is immediately palpable.

A PEEK INSIDE ... I 17 Kirsten: "I always wondered why everyone wanted to go to Ibiza, until we went there ourselves." The peace and quiet, the atmosphere, and the feeling we get when we step off the plane is so nice; it's wonderful to escape the hustle and bustle so close to home." Nick adds: "We find rest and relaxation on Ibiza; I can recover and recharge completely there."

Kirsten: "Our previous home already had lots of Rivièra Maison home accessories. When we decorated our new home, we had them advise us again. You can see how the furniture and accessories add atmosphere, warmth and cosy charm to such a large interior, where everything is relatively sleek and modern. We are very happy with it, in any case." Ibiza Nick has been in a relationship with Kirsten since 2005; the couple has two children, Nikki and Julian. They love to travel and have seen much of the world together. Nick and Kirsten discovered the lovely island of Ibiza a few years ago, a passion they share with Henk Teunissen.
Nick about Nick & Simon Nick Schilder, Dutch singer, is one half of the pop duo ‘Nick & Simon'; the other half is Simon Keizer. They had their big breakthrough in 2006, thanks in part to Jan Smit and manager Jaap Buijs, and have since become a permanent fixture in the landscape of Dutch music. Nick: "It's great when an album is popular, but the trick is to keep delivering quality. Our goal is to make the best possible album and present the best show each and every time. I find inspiration by listening to other musicians. My current favourites are Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and Rufus Wainwright."
The ultimate sense of home in the summer is enjoying a glass of rosé wine or another summertime beverage on the veranda. The children frolic in the garden, enjoying the family and each other. A nice home where they can relax and enjoy their peace and quiet is crucial for Nick and Kirsten.

Nick has been an ambassador for the noble game of chess since early this year. "I'm very passionate about it; I play chess every day. The best part is that you can play online any time of day on your laptop, tablet and phone, which is incredibly addictive. I'm on the road a lot, of course, and this is the ultimate way for me to relax. It is an honour and a privilege to be a chess ambassador. Chess is truly a way to exercise your mind, and it's so much fun to encourage young people to play."

Nico's Styling tips I simply love the summer! Long, leisurely dinners outdoors, summer evenings on the beach, spending lots of lovely time outside: it's all delightful. Our Ramatuelle collection, with its pinks and light blues, is inspired by the beaches of St. Tropez and adds a wonderful summertime twist to any interior. The 1960s are so inspiring... I was in St. Tropez on holiday last summer and a twist of fate put me on a beautiful yacht off the coastline by Brigitte Bardot's house. A dive and a splash later and I was carving my way through the water, swimming past her jetty.
Suddenly, I saw the figure of a faded grand dame puttering about in the garden; it was Brigitte herself! I was so close to this iconic film star who had been part of the inspiration for the Ramatuelle collection. Should I swim on and speak to her? No, it was better to preserve this illusory moment in time; barging in uninvited might prompt her to call the Gendarmerie! Happy summer!

Salade Ramatuelle Riche
Ingredients for 2 people: Salad: 1 head of butterhead lettuce 8 radishes 12 thin slices of cucumber 1 white onion, sliced into thin rings 2 tomatoes, cut into quarters Fish: 1 whole lobster, boiled 4 tiger prawns, shelled 4 cockles 120 grams of smoked salmon Garden herb vinaigrette: 2 tbsp white wine vinegar 4 tbsp olive oil 2 tsp sugar 2 tsp fine mustard 1/2 bunch of chives, finely chopped 1/2 bunch of flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped 10 large basil leaves finely chopped Instructions: Remove the leaves from the head of lettuce. Tear the larger leaves into smaller pieces. Rinse the lettuce in a large basin of water, shake the excess water off the leaves, and dab them dry with a clean tea towel or use a centrifuge to dry them. Put the lettuce in a bowl and add the radish, cucumber, onion and tomato. In a small bowl, mix the vinegar, mustard and sugar thoroughly. Stirring constantly, add the olive oil gradually to form a light vinaigrette. Add salt and pepper to taste. Stir the chives, parsley and basil through the mixture. Serve the salad onto two plates. Pour the vinaigrette on top and garnish with the various types of fish.

We are seeing an unusual trend in hair and make-up this summer. Lots of major brands have released summer lipsticks in intense winter colours, like deep red. The rest of the face is made up in very natural shades, in pastel shades with a light peach colour on the cheeks. Completely in line with the new fashion trend we see in Ramatuelle Beach as well. As far as hair goes, we see lots of cool blonde shades this summer, like champagne blonde, ash blonde and ultra blonde, which combine very well with the latest trends in make-up. People often ask me how to keep their hair and make-up nice for a day at the beach. I personally enjoy styling long hair with a ‘salt spray'. You treat the hair by ‘rolling it dry' between your hands for an instant beach look. There are several brands that offer mineral-based make-up these days. Mineral-based make-up is 100% natural and non-water-soluble, so it stays nice even after a refreshing dip in the ocean. Perfect for a day at the beach! If you're grabbing a bite to eat in a fun seashore restaurant, you really only need three products to touch up your make-up: eyeliner for the lifting effect, mascara for the intense gaze, and lip gloss to add the finishing touch. See you on the beach!
