elcome to the Sulphur Cap 2020 Conference, Awards and Exhibition. The event is being held in association with the Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Association and our platinum sponsor Caterpillar. We are very grateful for their support and that of the wider maritime community. The Sulphur Cap 2020 Conference, Awards and Exhibition is a natural development of Riviera’s well-established Fuels, Lubes and Emissions Technology titles as well as the increased coverage of Sulphur Cap 2020 issues in Marine Propulsion & Auxiliary Machinery. Over the next two days delegates will be briefed on all of the essential technical, operational and financial elements and options that need to be considered and understood to make the right strategic choices for compliance. As always, the concerns of the owner/operator and charterer are placed at the centre of our programme, a fact reflected in their strong presence on the podium across the two days as well as the large turnout generally. Our opening session sets the regulatory scene. Economic, environmental and enforcement issues will be thoroughly assessed. From here we look at port infrastructure and bunkering solutions. Expect open and animated discussion around supply, demand, availability and fuel quality. Innovation in engine technologies, our famous fuels and lubricants session and the owners, operators and managers forum make up the balance of day one’s technical programme. Day two has emissions technologies at its core. There has been a lot of press on uptake of this option and the economics. We will bring much needed clarity by exploring all the angles, including the owner/operator perspective. Session 4 on day
two will see AW Ship Management’s Daniel Evans, Knutsen’s Thomas Buberg and Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners’ Nick Lurkin share their perspectives. Delegates will gain insight into how owners and operators are balancing regulatory requirements and operating costs. A highpoint of the two days will of course be the Marine Propulsion Awards and gala dinner. Rightly known as one of the industry’s most convivial and enjoyable dinners, we will unwind, network and of course celebrate innovation and operational excellence from the last 12 months in marine engineering. We will also honour an industry leader that in the view of the Riviera Maritime Media editorial team exemplifies leadership and inspiration in the field of marine engineering. As always there will be many opportunities to network and forge new contacts. These include coffee breaks and buffet lunches. Sulphur Cap 2020 Conference, Awards and Exhibition could not take place without the generous support of all our sponsors. Alongside Caterpillar, special thanks go to gold sponsors DNV GL, Ecospray Technologies, International Paints, Lloyd’s Register, Total Lubmarine, Vimex and VPS and silver sponsors Consilium, Kongsberg, Rolls-Royce Marine, Shell Marine, Wärtsilä and Yara. We also thank our official supporting organisation Emisa. Please also be sure to visit the world class companies that form our supporting exhibition. Last, but by no means least, we are especially grateful to you, our international audience, for coming in such numbers and from all over the world. My colleagues and I remain available to assist in any way we can. Together we look forward to a productive, insightful and enjoyable event.

Platinum sponsor’s welcome
Welcome! John Shock Segment Manager - Cruise and Ferry, Caterpillar
O
n behalf of Caterpillar, I am pleased to welcome you to the Sulphur Cap 2020 Conference. In terms of bringing all of the stakeholders in our industry together to share knowledge and discuss how we can turn challenges into opportunities, this is the place to be. With the challenges facing the marine industry we need all the insights we can get to make the right decisions and capture the market opportunities that are out there. But it will take fresh ideas, wave-breaking solutions and improved technology. Our industry is on the brink of transformation. We can already see how borders open, communication increases and business practices change and help propel global growth. But that is not all. The ever increasing regulatory and competitive environment puts new demands on shipowners, equipment and crew. The demand for solutions that can increase efficiency
without sacrificing the environment is higher than ever. It’s a natural part of everyone’s agenda. Are complete solutions the way to go? We think so. All the best equipment from torque to thrust, and expertise to monitor the vessel’s total performance will help increase efficiency, reduce downtime and assist shipyards in reducing warranty expenses. Our offerings provide all of that in one place so that you can focus on other, equally important matters, such as recruiting and retaining the best people. Thanks to Caterpillar’s 90 years of innovation and experience of focusing on you, the customer, you can feel safe knowing that you have the right equipment and the right information. It allows you to spend less time worrying and more time doing what you do best. Here’s wishing you a great conference and, as always, we welcome the chance to talk with you. So come over and say hello.

Exhaust gas emissions from the maritime industry are subject to international and national laws and regulations. It is required for shipowners to establish compliance with new environmental requirements. Exhaust gas emissions from ships are subject to constantly stricter international, national and local regulations defined by IMO. ShipCEMS is designed to prove the compliance with the limits set for airborne pollution in MARPOL Annex VI. Vimex has been manufacturing instruments for the marine industry since 1982. We have designed our marine emission monitoring system (ShipCEMS) to provide our customers with true measurement of SO2 traces in ship exhaust gas. Our system is widely used across the globe to measure SO2/CO2 levels downstream the exhaust gas cleaning system (scrubber). Users find our system stable, accurate and easy to operate. With our reliable customer support, we are a market leader in ship emission monitoring. An example of our customer support is how we developed a system for hot swap of analysers where the customer can easily replace the analyser. Another example is ad hoc service either remotely or by sending a service technician on board. ShipCEMS can be customised to individual requirements, covering all types of exhaust cleaning systems and all ship fuels from heavy fuel oil to low sulphur fuel oil or LNG-fuelled ships. The system works as follows: sample probe extracts a sample from the exhaust treated by the scrubber and transports it in a heated sample line to a sample conditioning cabinet where moisture and particles are removed. The sample continues to the analyser cabinet where the analysis is performed and data is sent to the bridge. There can be up to four probes and sample conditioning cabinets to every analyser.
Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS) delivers testing, inspection and advisory solutions which help our customers achieve measurable improvements to their fuel and oil management, operational efficiency and compliance, within both the marine and power markets. Awards The Marine Propulsion Awards are the industry’s most coveted and credible. Entries were received from Europe, North America and Asia for the five main categories, which were reviewed by an independent industry panel, chaired by Riviera Maritime Media’s executive editor Paul Gunton, to select shortlists of three entries per category. These shortlists were put online for a public vote and the winners were determined by combining the judges’ and the online voters’ preferences. More than 1,600 online votes were cast. Presentations to the winners will be made during this evening’s gala dinner. The Graduate Research Award was reviewed by John Carlton, professor of marine engineering at the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, City University London.
