Not all HMPE is the same Ropes made with Dyneema® sk78 last longer in demanding environments. They’re ideal for handling oil and gas tankers, container ships, bulk cargo ships, naval vessels, and cruise ships. Mooring ropes with Dyneema® sk78 massively outperform alternatives in abrasion and creep lifetime comparisons, without sacrificing strength and reliability. To match the strength of a rope made with Dyneema® sk78, manufacturers who choose generic HMPE rope must adapt their rope construction by increasing both the lay length of the strands and the braid period of the rope. This weaker construction, plus the intrinsically lower performance of generic HMPE, reduces service life and increases costs. Learn more: www.dyneema.com
chairman’s welcome
A rewarding experience for the tanker industry Edwin Lampert Chairman, Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference & Awards Group Managing Editor Riviera Maritime Media
I
t gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Riviera Maritime Media’s Annual Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference. Over the course of the next two days delegates will be fully briefed on all of the essential elements needed for successful tanker operations in the year ahead – and beyond. Day one is themed around the commercial, technical and operational drivers powering the chemical and product tanker segments. Day two takes in the commercial, technical and operational factors underpinning the crude tanker sector. As always the concerns of the owner/operator and charterer are placed at the centre of our programme, a fact reflected in their strong presence on the podium across the two days as well as the large turnout generally. A highlight of the programme is the Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference Awards Programme. And this year – for the first time – we will be presenting the awards at a dedicated evening dinner. This promises to be a convivial and enjoyable conclusion to day one that will be crowned with awards recognising operational excellence and innovation, technical innovation and environmental performance. The shortlists were produced by our industry advisory panel. Special thanks are therefore due to: Karen Purnell, managing director, ITOPF; Phillip Belcher, marine director, Intertanko; Kim Ullman, chief executive
officer, Concordia Maritime and Andrew Cassels, director, OCIMF. The lists were then voted on by the Tanker Shipping & Trade readership. Our awards will also see two individuals recognised. This year’s Industry Leader Award goes to Nik Tsakos, president and chief executive of Tsakos Energy Navigation and The Lifetime Achievement Award will go to Kishore Rajvanshy, managing director, Fleet Management Ltd. As always there will be many opportunities to network and forge new contacts. These include coffee breaks, buffet lunches and of course our evening reception tonight and tomorrow night. The Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference could not take place without the generous support of all our sponsors. Special thanks go to DNV GL, our platinum sponsor, as well as ABS, De Nora, Dyneema, Eniram, Liberian Registry, The Marshall Islands (IRI), Norton Rose Fulbright and World Fuel Services. Please also be sure to visit the world class companies that form our supporting exhibition. Last, but by no means least, we are especially grateful to you, our international audience, for coming again in such numbers and from all over the world. My colleagues and I remain available to assist in any way we can. Together we look forward to a productive, insightful and enjoyable event.

platinum sponsor’s welcome
Cost of compliance may lead to increased scrapping Martin Crawford-Brunt Regional Business Development Manager – West Europe & Africa DNV GL
I
am pleased to welcome you all to Riviera Maritime Media’s 2017 Tanker Shipping & Trade conference. It is a real pleasure for DNV GL to support such a well-run tanker specific event in partnership with many industry leaders. It has been an interesting year for the oil tankers so far. On the one hand, we observe a continued strong oil demand reaching 1.6 mbd. Despite OPEC’s production cuts, oil prices continue to hover around US$50 mark as some countries (ie US, Libya) increase their exports. On the other hand, we see a deterioration of earnings, mainly caused by increased deliveries of the new tonnage, particularly on the crude side. Even though we expect tankers to struggle in the short term, the fundamentals remain rather solid in the longer term. Historically low newbuilding prices attract owners to order new ships, which comes as a relief to “contracthungry” yards. Most of those contracts are driven by fleet renewal needs and bearing in mind the current bargain prices, those ships are likely to be more competitive due to lower break even rates. Compliance with the many environmental regulations coming into force in the next three years will place an additional burden on shipowners and operators. Beyond the increase in capital cost, the ongoing expense to remain compliant given the operational challenges associated with this may be underestimated by some. This could have two important outcomes, firstly increased scrapping if the recent narrowing between the S&P market and scrap values remains and secondly the equipment fitted and the ability to operate it in a complaint way consistently may play a bigger role in chartering decision and ship valuations.
Digital transformation is ever increasing in our daily lives and in many aspects of the marine industry. Constant development is required to provide cutting edge services to support customers. We recently launched digital class certificates which ensures authenticity and can be validated online. This will reduce unnecessary courier and logistics costs while making new certificates instantly available on board for inspections. Last month we rolled out “smart survey booking (SSB)” which uses intelligent software agents to help customers find the best time and place to book a survey, as well as the optimal combination of surveys and audits. SSB simplifies survey bookings by fitting inspections into the customers’ schedule while saving time and costs. Our port state control planner generates customised, vessel and port-specific checklists based where your vessel will be trading. This is a free service which helps you to prioritise where to focus to reduce deficiencies during inspections. These services are easy to reach through our My DNV GL services which also contain many other free resources such as recorded webinars on the finer points of compliance with regulations. Events such as the Tanker Shipping and Trade conference are an essential venue for exchanging solutions to address the many challenges we face together. I want to thank the organising team at Riviera for providing an excellent platform to do so and we look forward to meeting with many of you over what is sure to be a very interesting and productive two days.

Recognising industry excellence A highlight of the Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference is its awards ceremony on Tuesday 14 November. The five categories are: • The Tanker Shipping & Trade Operational Excellence Award 2017 (sponsored by Winterthur Gas & Diesel) • The Tanker Shipping & Trade Technical Innovation Award 2017 (sponsored by DNV GL) • The Tanker Shipping & Trade Environmental Award 2017 (sponsored by ITOPF) • The Tanker Shipping & Trade Industry Leader Award 2017 (sponsored by Hill Dickinson) • The Tanker Shipping & Trade Lifetime Achievement Award 2017 (sponsored by World Fuel Services) Three companies have been shortlisted in the operational excellence and technical innovation categories, with four companies shortlisted for the environmental award.
The Tanker Shipping & Trade Operational Excellence Award 2017 (sponsored by Winterthur Gas & Diesel) Waterfront Shipping Company Over the past year, Waterfront Shipping Company’s seven 50,000 DWT methanol tankers – powered by twostroke dual-fuel engines capable of running on methanol, fuel oil, marine diesel oil or gas oil – have been operating safely and reliably across the globe. These innovative vessels have achieved accolades from the marine industry for their use of clean-burning methanol as an alternative marine fuel and offer a glimpse of a possible future for a cleaner and more fuel-efficient shipping industry. www.wfs-cl.com Andeavor (formerly Tesoro Maritime) Andeavor has taken the notable step of deploying ABB software on its VLCC fleet to improve safety for tankers entering US ports, which provides provides real-time data of the keel-to-seabed clearance. Sensors continuously send information to a portable surveyor unit carried by pilots to verify the vessels’ route to the dock which ABB’s software validates. This data is used to calculate safe transit time windows for large oil tankers to enter the port. www.andeavor.com Lufthansa Industry Solutions A joint venture between Columbia Shipmanagement, Marlow Navigation and software group Lufthansa Industry Solutions is producing software programs for a host of ship-wide applications. Lufthansa Industry Solutions are convinced IT solutions from the airline industry can be adopted for the maritime sector to improve safety, and optimise operations. Koole Engineering Until now a chemical tanker with independent cargo tanks has been unfeasible. However, with the Orca Tank Technology it is now possible to build a chemical tanker with independent cargo tanks for about the same cost, with the same capacities the same capacities as a conventional tanker. This brings the many advantages of an independent cargo tank within reach of the shipowner, while leaving behind the many disadvantages of the conventional parcel tanker. The innovation recently became commercially available following an approval in principal from Bureau Veritas. kooleengineering.nl TestLab Finland TestLab has developed a solution for harsh maritime conditions together with the European Space Agency. IceTrails is a service for sea traffic to help navigation planning in ice-covered water areas. IceTrails provides advanced information about ice route locations and conditions to improve marine safety, enhance the predictability of travel times and save bunker costs for vessels operating in icy conditions. www.testlab.fi/icetrails Liberian International Shipping & Corporate Registry and Prevention at Sea The electronic oil record book (e-ORB) is a software application designed to replace traditional paper oil record books (ORB) (Part I and Part II) and facilitate accurate ORB entries into an electronic format while complying with international conventions and flag state requirements with regards to electronic log books. The e-ORB was created to combat challenges associated with using the traditional oil record book and to save shipowners and operators from facing fines, detentions and revenue loss associated with inaccurate or falsified oil records. www.liscr.com/eORB
The Tanker Shipping & Trade Environmental Award 2017 (sponsored by ITOPF)
Kuwait Oil Tanker Company A major environmental concern with regard to crude-carrying tankers is the generation of volatile organic compounds (VOC). The lightest component of VOC contributes to the greenhouse effect, whilst the heavier components contribute to the formation of ground level ozone, which is detrimental to human health and vegetation. The VOC reduction system (De-VOC) installed on 12 Kuwait Oil Tanker Company VLCCs prevents vaporisation of lighter components of crude oil and has saved approximately 27,000 metric tonnes of vapour emissions. LPP Combustion Lean, premixed, prevaporised (LPP) combustion technology converts liquid fuels into a substitute for natural gas, which can power most combustion devices while yielding emissions comparable to that of ordinary natural gas. LPP Combustion's entry centred on its patented fuel-processing technology that allows a range of light liquid hydrocarbons to be used in place of liquid natural gas (LNG) in low-emissions gas turbines for shipboard power generation. Because LPP Combustion skids enable clean use of readily storable liquids in gas turbines, they eliminate the cost and complexity of installing shipboard LNG storage systems. www.lppcombustion.com Eagle Star Eagle Star is embracing LNG as the fuel of the future by specifying that four Aframax tankers, currently on order at Samsung Heavy Industries, will have an LNG dual-fuel option. The 113,000 DWT vessels are due for delivery from Q3 2018. Eagle Staranticipates that up to half of its Aframax fleet and other petroleum assets, including VLCCs, will also adopt the LNG dual-fuel option over the next few years. www.eaglestar.com.ph GAC EnvironHull The environmentally-friendly HullWiper remotely operated vehicle (ROV) gives a fouling-free hull hull, reducing fuel consumption and enhancing long-term long-term operating efficiency for vessels, whilst eliminating downtime for cleaning operations. HullWiper collects marine fouling removed from hulls, rather than polluting port water and risking the spread of harmful invasive species. Captured residues are pumped into a filter unit and deposited into dedicated drums onshore, which are collected by a locally-approved environmental waste disposal company. www.hullwiper.co Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference & Awards 2017 | 13

The Tanker Shipping & Trade Lifetime Achievement Award 2017 (sponsored by World Fuel Services) Kishore Rajvanshy Managing Director, Fleet Management Limited Fleet Management Limited, led by the genial Kishore Rajvanshy has seen 20% growth in its fleet “and most of that in the tanker segment”. New offices were also added in Dubai and Turkey. With 404 vessels in the fleet, Fleet Management Ltd ranks as the world’s third largest ship manager based on vessels in full technical management. There are 160 tankers of which 120 are chemicals, 37 VLCCs and the balance a mix of Aframaxes, Suezmaxes, MRs and gas carriers. The company is targeting 10% growth in the year ahead and would like to build the tanker fleet to around 190 vessels. The new offices were opened in support of the strategic decision taken last year to grow the tanker business. “We have some clients in Dubai so wanted a representative office there,” explains Mr Rajvanshy. “The Turkish office is intended to tap into that nation’s pool of highly trained crew.” The company has also bolstered its relationships with crewing offices in Ukraine. Alongside these investments FML’s commitment to developing bespoke software has been maintained. “In our case our growth has been purely organic since our inception in 1995 and based on adding one vessel at a time,” said Mr Rajvanshy.
The Tanker Shipping & Trade Industry Leader Award 2017 (sponsored by Hill Dickinson) Nikolas P Tsakos President, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director, Tsakos Energy Navigation Nikolas Tsakos continues to show powerful leadership as head of Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN) and chairman of Intertanko. “Our strategy [at TEN] is simple,” he told investors last year. “We have a long-term business with major end users.” The formula has been successful and has generated results that the company believes have “surpassed any of our peer group in duration and continuity.” 60% of TEN’s future vessel sailing days are on long-term charters with profit shares. This translates into US$1.5Bn of secured future revenues over the next two and a half years. “We have always maintained a solid balance sheet and low debt – and have often been criticised for being too conservative,” Dr Tsakos told Tanker Shipping & Trade. “But if you are in the business for 23 years I think you need to hold cash in reserve for opportunities,” he said, adding TEN’s management controls 35% of the business and has never sold its shares. “Rather, it has grown its shareholding continuously.” As the recently re-elected chairman of Intertanko, he continues to pursue an ambitious agenda and has been especially outspoken on maintaining the industry’s supply:demand balance. At Intertanko’s annual meeting in Singapore he summed it up rather neatly “Much like smoking, over-ordering [vessels] gives you a quick fix… but it kills you in the end.”

The Marshall Islands Registry www.register-iri.com The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) Maritime Registry (the “Registry”) is the second-largest registry in the world, surpassing 4,286 vessels and over 155 million gross tonnes (GT) at the end of September 2017. International Registries, Inc and its affiliates (IRI) provide administrative and technical support to the RMI Maritime and Corporate Registries. IRI has a network of 27 worldwide offices in major shipping and financial centres that have the ability to register a vessel, including those under construction, record a mortgage or financing charter, provide technical support, issue seafarer documentation, incorporate a company, and service clientele. The RMI fleet has received the highest ratings in Port State Control (PSC) international rankings, is on the white lists of both the Paris and Tokyo memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and has also met the flag criteria for a low-risk ship under the Paris and Tokyo MoU’s new inspection regimes. At the same time, the RMI has maintained Qualship 21 status with the United States Coast Guard (USCG) for 13 consecutive years. The RMI is the only one of the top-three flag states that holds Qualship 21 status, an acknowledgment that is paramount for the RMI owners and operators. The most important asset to the RMI Registry is its customers and IRI strives to provide them with 24/7 service from its worldwide network of over 400 personnel. By continuing to strengthen its team worldwide, IRI ensures a high level of customer service and continuous improvement of registry related services for the increasing number of RMI flagged vessels. www.register-iri.com
ITOPF is maintained as a not-for-profit organisation by the world’s shipowners and their insurers to provide 24/7 technical advice in the event of spills of oil, chemicals and other substances in the marine environment. It is supported by an international board of directors comprising some of the leading names in tanker shipping and P&I insurance. Since its establishment in 1968, ITOPF has gained unparalleled first-hand experience of the realities of combating major marine spills. Its small team of marine biologists, chemists and engineers have provided advice onsite at almost 800 spills in 99 countries, including such landmark cases as Amoco Cadiz, Exxon Valdez, Braer, Erika, Prestige and Hebei Spirit. ITOPF’s advice rests on a science-based appreciation of the fate and effects of pollutants in the marine environment and a practical evaluation of response options and claims for compensation. As such, it has established a reputation for being credible and impartial, which has enabled it to exercise considerable influence in promoting effective response to marine spills worldwide. ITOPF shares its scientific knowledge and experience at training courses, seminars, spill drills and exercises for government and shipowners worldwide. It also advises on the preparation of contingency plans and other matters relating to marine pollution. ITOPF’s practical experience means that its contribution to policy discussions and legal texts through its observer status at the IMO and IOPC Funds is highly valued. In order to facilitate best practice in spill response, ITOPF supports R&D activities through its annual R&D Award which provides up to £50,000 (US$66,000) each year to fund projects that contribute to a better understanding of the challenges faced in spill response and environmental monitoring. ITOPF is a source of comprehensive information on marine pollution through its library, technical publications, films and website. Each year ITOPF publishes statistics from a database of accidental spills of oil from tankers, combined carriers and barges which demonstrate the dramatic and sustained reduction in oil spills from tankers over the decades.
