We

SKINS ‘Ruby’ Masters Studio: Design and Build
From Gottfried Semper’s Principle of Cladding in the 19th Century, through to Mies van der Rohe’s “skin and bones” in the 20th, the separation of architectural skin and structure has been a central topic. This studio aimed to continue this line of inquiry and explore the complex and dynamic relationship between architectural skin and structure.

Materials/Connections/Form Investigations 1:1 mateiral, connections and form investigations were carried out to both test and guide the nature of our design, limitations, failures and successes began to inform the design parametrs we could employ into the final form. Through a ‘natural selection’-like’ process, bottom up design process on the indiviual level ultimately informed the larger scale design. it was through many iterations and investigations that an ultimate understanding of how the individual materials, connections and forms could successfully translate into the final form.

Instillation The skin is installed two sections at a time, the two sections are stitched together before placing them onto the staircase. Beginning with two sections already in place, these photographs show the installation process of another four segments. One piece (2 sections) is carried by 6 to 16 people, depending on segment size, and is carried up the main staircase to the appropriate floor. Slipping the sections around the outside of the staircase while still holding onto the connection rods the skin is walked through the atrium staircase until it has reached the apoproximate location before being lowered into place. The connection are then placed in one at a time from one side to the next to ensure minimal damage.
