THE THIRD PLACE VISION
Repurposing unused infrastructure as people oriented public spaces that foster social engagements
“There is no logic that can be superimposed on the city; people make it, and it is to them, not buildings, that we must fit into our plans.” - Jane Jacobs PROJECT BRIEF Life without community has produced, for many, a lifestyle consisting mainly of a home-to-work-and-back-again shuttle. On examining the area of study, it was deduced that the impoverished quality of life was a product of diminishing social landscape, obsolete unused voids and lack of social engagement. ‘Quality third places' is conceptualized from considering our homes to be the first places, and our workplaces, the second. ‘The Third Place’ intends to provide opportunities for recreation and leisure to enhance livability, social cohesion and foster human interaction. The existing site has an uneven distribution of positive activity generators, despite the area being a TOD influence zone.

RBAN PUNCTURE
The objective is to balance the quality of life within the available quantity of space by restructuring, reactivating and repurposing existing urban space in the city. Our intervention elaborates on strategies to strengthen both connections and activate vibrant spaces to serve as an aggregator of people. This is being achieved by redefining the role of streets, upgrading transit corridors & integrating urban anchors with the public realm to increase porosity etc. Providing equitable access to public vibrant spaces shall calibrate a people-place congruence for better Ease of Living & social well being.

REGIONAL PERSPECTIVE
Unused commercial and green land acc. to assigned Land use (MPD 2021) close to CBD
Proposal of green blue assests and clean economic actvities to promote ecological resilience. (MPD 2041)
Need for optimized densitification (walkability, public spaces) in TOD influence zones
Lack of primary and secondary parking zones in proximity of landmarks ( eg. CR Market 1)
Scope of transit oriented development and 15 minute neighbourhoods
Specific sub groups settled in clusters leading to diversity yet segregation Bengalis in CR
ECOLOGY
Insufficient urban green cover & increased land surface temp. (URDPF)
Under used cluster, neighborhood and community parks & green belts in the area of study.
insufficent green and open space per resident than required i.e. 12 sqm
Poor Walkability :Lack of shade and green AQI : unsafe Climate & heat

INFRASTRUCTURE
MORPHOLOGY
Lack of self sufficiency in certain clusters formed based on morphology
Land use decisions lead to habitat fragmentation & degradation over two decades.
Need for densification: mixed used development walkable neighbourhoods.
Over crowding ( built) in over developed areas despite inadequate road network
Lack of mixed used development and social amenities in residential zones
Difference in belief systems, spending capacity w.r.t residential clusters
TRANSPORTATION
Under utilization of mass transit options (like Nehru Place)
High traffic volume led to increased pollution and urban heat island effect in the area
Rigid zoning in the area of study segregates land use - spatial & social segregations
High congestion despite good metro network = need for modal shift for regional goals
Sparse footfall on certain metro gates, transit points due to uneven activity spread
Users’ last mile preferences need to be accommodated
Basic water services align but vary as per CDP proposals at present.
Need for ecological resilience by reducing runoff, and preserving local ecosystems
Need to increase public realm and vibrant public spaces acc. to TOD policy
Formation of traffic bottlenecks w.r.t. location of social infrastructural institutes.
Lack of social sustainability e.g. recreation zones w.r.t demographics
Temporal variation in activity and inactivity in spaces-
Under utilized scope of supporting local economy close to CBD
Disparities in accessibility to green spaces indicate social inequities. (URDPFI)
Commercial spaces within the urban morphology = strong economic presence
