LATAR BELAKANG

KAMPUNG MARUNDA : Accumulate, Spread, Restore WET LAND

DESIGN STRATEG

Basically there are 2 characteristic of flows on the site. First, it spreads. Se accumulated into one point (due to the phy). Therefore the design strategy, constructed wetland method, will

Located in Cilincing district, North Jakarta, the site is a wetland area (marshes) in Kampung Marun da. This area is known for its difficulty of clean water access especially in dry season. Clean water, which is supplied by PAM has slow flow rate and each houses should/would buy clean water from (carts seller berapa liter gitu per hari). This area is also a lowland that is often affected by tidal floods. The wetland condition is surrounded by densely populated settlements with the character Spread water O of a close, populist community. Marunda village itself has a strong historical value because it is nota - Accumulated water > make it flow > being accumulated ble as Kampung Si Pitung (local hero).

After being processed, the water can b distributed for daily use of comm surrounding, some of them is stored/ some remains in the site for flora-faun as recreational element

BIODIVERSITY BEFORE The existing area is an empty land which turns into wetland area filled with wild-growing plants. The water tends to be brackish due to the location in lowland, closed to the sea, and periodic tidal floods.

Public Space The high density and lack of adequate open space for the community encouraged the idea of creating public spaces that were integrated with constructed wetlands. Public space in the form of nodes located on the pedestrian path as part of the wetland park is designed with selected vegetation as an urban forest which functions as water absorption while maintaining air temperature to create cool micro climate so the public spaces can be use comfortably.

Sediment and Water Control This area also act as a natural filter where carbon is stored in the sediment and dissolved whether in surface or groundwa ter. But the main function of this area is to control water condition and quality in every stage (each level of the terraced wetlands)

BIODIVERSITY AFTER Constructed wetland is designed to maximize water treatment on the existing wetland. Wetland mostly seen as the abandoned area, humid, dirty, and unhealthy, meanwhile it is also one of the biggest ecosystem that contain rich biodiversity after the ocean and rainforest. Intentionally constructing wetland with additional features of park, public space, and area for disposal, will enhance the image of wetland, while also preserve the water, create habi tat for many species, inviting community to come and learn through spatial experience the importance of water preservation and to live coexist with flora-fauna could give environmental and well-being benefit.

Bioswales

Our design strategy is WATER IMPULS, wich we restore and improve aquatic ecosystem to preserve more water and reach higher biodiversity number. In other hand, we want to restore Jakarta’s ecological identity as wetlands area. We choose three aspects of Jakarta aquatic ecosystem : wetlands, river, and lake. Every aspects has it own strategies to water preservation and increase biodiversity number.

WETLANDS

Open and maximize space for water

WETLANDS in Jakarta are mostly consist of neglected empty lands with huge amount of water resource. It also contains huge amount of municipal waste such as plastic bag and other unbiodegredable waste. Restoration strategies includes landscape arrangement to create more public spaces and water catchment and filtering area.

made of terraced wetlands with retention pond on the lower ground. Large wale span across the site to maximize stormwater management and act as recre alongside the water flows. The terraces was based on geographic information w analysis on the site. The terraces wetlands are using gravity, passively filtering treatment process which is based on different slopes are thematic and have ent impressions for each pixel. Wetland park also act as a firsthand exposure to w water is managed and being processed so people are encouraged to be more aware to preserve and wiser in using water.

RIVER Almost all of Jakarta natural landsccapes alongside the RIVER are already gone. There are many obstacles that lead to this conditions, one of them is high density of settlement alongside the river. This also leads to increasing number of slum area and flooding. Our strategies is to restore the natural landscape of the river, along with the species and encour age human to live together with other species. HOUSING

WATER CATCHMENT AREA

These terraced wetlands slowing down the flow of water and speed nutrient removal from the water by microorganism and plant species that use excess nutrients as resources for their growth.

LANDSCAPE RESTORATION

LAKE There are severalLAKE in Jakarta but none of them get serious treatment as biggest water catchment area. Such negligance leads to flooding and water pollution. Lake has biggest potential of biodiversity number so the design strategies are includes preserve and create new habitat for other species. There are also raingardens to create more water catchment area.

RIVERS

KAMPUNG PULO : Live Within the Water

The site is in an area with high density population, located along the riverbank, and prone to drain flooding from October to February. When heavy rains occur, water flow rate and volume will increase, so that the Kampung Pulo area within a radius of 100 meters from the banks of the Ciliwung River will be flooded with mud and overflow.

PROJECT VISION

The design strategy can be replicated in settlemen as dirty and unfit for a metropolitan city. Therefore for flood or any overflowing river problems becaus gy also creates productive space for human and

Rain gardens and space in houses’ lower ground benefits for residents who lives around.

BEFORE BIODIVERSITY

DESIGN STRATEGY

The houses are sticked to each other’s wall and the alleyways are narrow. The sewer for drainage are available but they have small dimension and insufficient to collect and transport rainwater when it has high flow rate and volume. The condition of rivers and streets around settlements tend to be covered with concrete or cement pavement and therefore minimizing water absorption, no zero runoff, and accelerating the water discharge instead..

In the site, water comes from 2 sources: the flow rivers that overflow during floods and rain water. S the design strategies are :

UPPER SPACE Housing Public Space Surrounding settlements are designed with the addition multilevel path/track which functions as a public space. This space is flexible, can be used as a community center for waste management, or gathering activities. The lower ground space will be used in normal/dry conditions. Meanwhile, when flood occurs, the upper space will be active as a connecting path.

The existing house has a simple form with micro size and stick to each other. Houses are redesigned by adapting existing forms, still using rectangular floor plan as the most efficient plan. The highly dense of residential conditions results the lack of natural lighting in each house. To solve this problem, angular form of facade is created to maximize sunlight. Meanwhile, in order to overcome the floods which increase every year, the lower floors is being lifted, create stilt house design. The lower space functions as an animal stall and open space in the neighborhood so that humans and animals can live side by side in one ecosystem.

This condition often considered e, if the strategy is applied along the river’s body in Jakarta, it becomes a solution se it transforms slums area into abundant water reserves. In addition, this strate animal activities, regenerates the life of biodiversity.

Why we should care about species diversity? The answer lies in the fact that, the primary cause of today’s loss of biodiversity is habitat alteration caused by human activities. This was our responsibility to restore the natural habitat for species. Jakarta was a wetlands area before mass urban development happens and turns the natural landscapes into concrete forest. The design strategy start from restore the aquatic ecosystem, wich also restore and increase the number of species there. Some species, especially plants, also contribute in carbon storage and cooling effect of the environment. Meanwhile other species such as farm animals and agricultural plants are supporting the human life.

Divided

As there is already big potential of biodiversity, this area would focusing to be the area that preserve habitat and also create new habitat for species. Water catchment area expanded and improved with raingardens and water tank preservation system. This place also had great potential for recreation and educational park. The area is divided into 3 compartments, (1) the existing lake, (2) the edge of lake, (3) biohabitat and settlement area. The lake is divided into 2 zones based on its depth, deep and shallow. The division meant to differ the living species. Meanwhile on the edge of the lake, promenade is designed as a waterfront-public space for locals’ amenities (jogging, cycling) and can be used for fishing. Besides for human activities, this area is intentionally to be overrun by flood when heavy rain occurs to collect and preserve massive amount of water, and also protecting the third compartment (settlement in surrounding)
