Lies, damn lies and senseless predictions Scale. It’s now poised to be the defining feature of the energy storage market. And, almost certainly, it will be one of the defining themes of this year’s ABC meetings. Elon Musk’s irritating term — the gigafactory — may have entered the English language, but even he would be surprised at the number of such factories springing up. Recent estimates of non-lead battery production capacity make this point. In 2018 this stood at 12GWh. But by 2024 capacity is going to grow several times to somewhere around 154GWh, according to one analysis. Yet another sees CATL, the Chinese lithium giant, manufacture 136.6GWh by 2022. Another suggests 2,857GWh by 2040. The precision of the last 7GWh is frankly comforting. So too for the last 0.6GWh for CATL’s production levels. To misquote Danish physicist Niels Bohr — coincidentally a close buddy of Werner Heisenberg, the founder of the Uncertainty Principle — “predictions are very difficult, especially when they concern the future”.

The question now is how lead batteries will make a come-back in an energy-hungry world that is now looking almost entirely at lithium ion and flow batteries for its solution. Two factors are now in place that haven’t been the case in recent years, and they suggest that a comeback is not just probable but more than likely.

But what does seem to be certain is that there’s every indication these predictions could be a drop in the ocean for the amount of energy storage that will be needed.

The first is that the huge amount of storage that’s going to be needed for the future is only just becoming clear. A subject that will be topical on the peripheries of the ABC presentations.

Forgetting all the talk of ‘advanced’ lead batteries — and that’s not to disparage them at all — it’s more than likely that plain old-fashioned lead batteries will be needed as an essential component of energy storage.

The recent California initiative, signed by governor Jerry Brown as an executive order, to be net zero carbon emissions by 2045, is hugely ambitious.

One of the key factors in this will be the plummeting costs of generating electricity through solar panels (and less excitingly the growth of other sources of renewable energy such as wind power). The magic formula for a surprisingly large and growing number of power utilities is solar + storage. And if you feel the need to add an equals sign in… = cheaper electricity. With the price of solar — in most parts of the world at least — now below the cost of power from conventional generating plants, the addition of storage becomes ever more important. Mainly because without the endless chatter of any promised price falls in battery prices, the cost of solar+storage as a package is becoming ever cheaper. www.batteriesinternational.com

It was followed up recently in the UK, which enshrined in law a commitment to do the same by 2050. Others will follow. The second is that lead is better placed than ever to provide a quick, resource friendly, recyclable product that can fill the gaps in demand that look clearly set to emerge. Recent advances in lead chemistry — and being taken further by both the CBI and private industry — are coinciding with the start of serious campaigning and marketing efforts by the ILA, BCI and EUROBAT. It’ll be fascinating to see what the state of the lead battery industry will be when we next meet up again in two years’ time. Welcome to Bali — the Land of the Gods

W

elcome, or rahajeng rauh to Bali, holiday destination of the Kardashians, Beckhams, and Gordon Ramsay. Known as the Land of the Gods due to its natural beauty, another of its nicknames is the Land of Two Seasons: the monsoon hits between October and April. With its roots embedded in Chinese and Indian culture, Bali is now Indonesia’s most popular tourist destination. Its ancient culture is preserved artistically, through the mediums of dance, sculpture, and even metalworking. Supported largely by the tourist trade, Bali’s artistic and spiritual centre continues to flourish amid its renowned backdrop of sunsets and seascapes (plus the occasional torrents of rain).

Surf’s up!

About 12,000 years ago large numbers of settlers from Java, as well as various regions of China and India, visited Bali. This opened trade routes to the two prominent civilizations of that era, combining the political structures of India with the spiritual practices of China. Bali was brought under Javanese control in the 14th century and the royal court was moved to Gelgel. Bali reinstated its independence when the dynasty fell to Islam in the 15th century. The country provided sanctuary for the Javanese aristocracy, who faced persecution. With them came musicians, artists, and Hindu priests, which shaped the culture we enjoy today — Indonesia is a Muslim country but Bali itself is predominantly Hindu.

Not far from the hotel is Blackstone beach, so-called due to a chunk of black basalt which protrudes at the reef’s long point. The beach itself is a long strip of white sand, which is open to the public. If you fancy braving the surf, Blackstone is more manageable for beginner and intermediate surfers. Odyssey Surf school is on site, offering lessons and guide services. There are several places nearby where you can enjoy good food and a cold beer, either post-surf or sunbathe. The Verdant Organic Kitchen (within the shopping centre near-

by) offers a health-conscious selection including fruit, smoothies, and pasta dishes. If you’re after something more lively, head for the Kul Kul Bar at The Laguna resort. Their menu includes sushi, fajitas, and burgers, as well as a selection of local dishes. They boast an extensive cocktail menu, their signature mixes including the Kul Kul mojito and the Bali Bengong, as well as punches to share. You’re also welcome to take advantage of their numerous swimming lagoons, which are blissfully urchin free.

menu. They offer a range of Western and Indonesian fare, including homemade pizzas, chicken burgers, and dory fillet steaks.

Calling all motorheads! Just a short taxi ride from the hotel …. If you like beer, bikes, and automobiles, then this might become your spiritual home during your stay. Man Shed is a themed bar filled with vintage cars, bikes, and auto memorabilia. The bar attracts enthusiasts and tourists alike, and the collection itself includes

Warung d’Sawah provides one of the most authentic dining experiences that Bali has to offer. It’s about half an hour away in a taxi. Set in a glade overlooking rice paddy fields, this tranquil space offers traditional cuisine in the open air. The bamboo structures add to the Balinese ambience, where lanterns light the courtyard in the evenings. The menu has something for everyone, including Chinese, Western, Indonesian, and Balinese cuisine. The crispy duck is a restaurant speciality.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO

GETTING IN A PADDY! Tegalalang Rice Terraces Tour, Ubud This is a tour that you can take from the hotel. It’s not so near however — about an hour away but an interesting journey and well worth the time! If photography’s your thing, then the rice paddies tour offers not only a workout for the body, but one for the eyes. According to legend, these terraces were passed down by Rsi Markandeya, a holy man, in the eighth century. Its elevated position gives some respite from the heat, so trekking through the paddies shouldn’t be too hard on the system. Here you can speak with the local farmers and sample a green coconut drink. Locals also turn their hands to crafts, making ornamental carvings which are for sale. Some of the techniques used have been passed down through the generations, whereas others have sprung up through their continued passion for the arts. One mythical Balinese figure is particularly revered — the Garuda. This is a bird-like creature who acts as Vishnu’s personal transport. Your guide will introduce you to the locals, explain their sustainable irrigation system, after which you’ll enjoy the inclusive lunch.

A 10TH CENTURY TEMPLE Goa Gajah ‘Elephant Cave’ Temple, Bedulu Village, Ubud Again, not so near — it’s about 28 miles away — but this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The mouth of the cave, carved into a giant face, is thought to be that of an elephant’s head. The temple’s courtyard is full of relics and wall carvings. The site also has a meditational cave, fountains, and bathing pools. The Hindu influence goes back to the 10th century, and the cave itself houses three stone idols wrapped in colored cloths. Several indentations show where priests sat for meditation, and the walls are blackened with incense soot. Goa Gajah temple was primarily built as two streams meet here, which is considered sacred. It was built for hermetic meditation, and combines Hindu, Buddhist, and Shivaite disciplines. There’s also a market to browse and a variety of food and drink options available. Open daily from 08:00-16:00.

GETTING AROUND Taxi is the most reliable mode of transport here, the best company being Blue Bird Taxi. Drivers speak English and use a meter. They are relatively cheap too and cost just over $1 a mile. Do beware of fakes — look for ‘Blue Bird’ over the windscreen and the phone number. Avoid taxis if the driver won’t use a meter, even if they claim there’s a fixed fare after dark. All transport in Bali is cash only; it’s also wise to carry change to avoid the lack of change scam. Bemos (a minibus or van) do not come recommended — the conditions are cramped and the routes aren’t direct. Lifts by ojeck (motorcycles) are risky in big towns but considered okay on quieter roads (taxis are uncommon in some areas, such as Ubud). Typically you may ask for the taxi driver to wait till you return. The going rate is around Rp40,000 ($3) an hour.

• There are two volcanoes — both active! — on the island. But not to worry they’re not near the hotel! One of them, Mount Agung is 10,000 foot high and the highest point on the island. • Want a steady state job for life? Become a priest! All clerics of recognised religions by the government are paid for by the state. • Most of the world has four seasons but not Bali which has just two — wet and dry. The rainy season is between October and March. The island has microclimates too — it can be sunny in one village while pouring buckets in the next. • Yummy! World’s most expensive coffee Kopi Luwak is one of the specialties of Bali. The coffee beans are gathered from Civat cat droppings. The animal eats the beans, poops them but roasted they are some of the most expensive cups of coffee in the world. • Bali people have only four different names for their children and that is in the order of the child’s birth. First baby, Wayan; second baby, Made; third baby, Nyoman; and the fourth baby Ketut. The fifth baby is again Wayan and the rest follows in cycle. • Bali has a culture of welcoming everyone and hence they had a no entrance-gate policy. They were so strict about this open welcome that earlier in the past having an entrance gate was considered a taboo. • Ouch! According to Balinese tradition, every person’s top six teeth should be filed down. They believe the six vices — anger, jealousy, desire, confusion, greed and drunkenness — enter through these teeth.

Record numbers and much to discuss The Asian Battery Conference has always been a maverick affair. As the earliest major conference that focused solely on lead batteries in the region it was the forefather, if by 18 months, of its European equivalent, the ELBC. The origins of the ABC started in 1986 through an organization called ZALAS, the Zinc and Lead Asian Services which was based in Singapore. It was sponsored by the major primary zinc and lead smelting companies of Australia and Pacific Rim countries.

ZALAS’s main objective was to promote the use of zinc and lead through technically supporting customers and educating them around the use of the elements. They even started a zinc galvanising conference which today is still running, the Pacific Galvanizers Conference. Since those early days we’ve grown enormously. When I took over as chairman 20 years ago, it was a very scientific/technical conference. It was a lot smaller and

Since those early days the battery business in Asia has changed enormously — nowadays around twothirds of the world’s lead batteries are made in the Asian region. At the time of the first ABC in 1986, the world lead consumption was 5.5

million tonnes with 65% of that entering the battery market, today we consume over 13 million tonnes with 85% being converted into batteries. The range and types of batteries we now produce have also changed during this period and, of course, the way we make the battery. It’s a far cry from that first conference when the market was dominated by the use of antimonial alloys and when many Asian producers were only starting to think about converting the nega-

We have kept many of the early aspects to those conferences in place — we still strive to keep it a family affair, even though the family is much, much larger and spreads across the world. It’s important too that we keep that technical thread running through the majority of the presentations but balanced with an understanding of the future of the market, environmental aspects and of course ways to help the industry such as product breakthroughs. But it is also about the industry just getting together, making new friends and networking. There is a whole range of things that we offer around the exhibition that are useful in this respect.

A complete package

It is about offering people a whole package. Our aim is to provide the lead battery community of not only Asia, but worldwide with a forum that is truly useful to attendees. The opportunity to learn, the opportunity to share their learning and, of course, to provide a venue where the commercial side of the industry meets its counterparts, its clients and we all get to understand the broader picture of the industry. This is particularly important to me as I’ve spent almost four decades within the industry and in the last few years I feel that parts of it are either burying their heads in the sand or are looking in the wrong direction while real challenges are knocking at our door. So, yes, we’ve seen rival chemistries come and go. Most of us can remember when fuel cells or super-capacitors were going to put our lead world out of business.

But there’s a threat ahead with the arrival of lithium batteries on a huge scale to the detriment of lead. In many ways we’re reacting to this in the right way — I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a boom of innovation and ideas. But I do wonder if we’re losing sight of a longer term threat to our industry and something that we at this year’s meeting should at least discuss formally and informally. The fact is that a whole generation of experts ranging from titans such as Ken Peters or Detchko Pavlov through to some extraordinary brains, think Mike Weighall, Michael Mayer, David Boden and the like, are no longer with us. Some of these men — Dave Boden, for example, knew what to do when things went wrong. They were as able to talk to machine operators on the plant floor in fixing a problem as they were to explain to management the science behind the fix. Too often nowadays we’re seeing the electrochemist alone. The man in the white laboratory jacket rather than the person equally at home in overalls hunched over a casting machine in a suit and tie. The main point here is that the well of knowledge is steadily being diluted and a lifetime of experience and experimentation is also vanishing. Talk to some of today’s veterans and it is surprising to find that many of the industry’s problems had been investigated, tested and resolved years ago. A case in point is Ken Peters, who I remained in close contact up until his death last year. Ken followed with keen interest the research of the former ALABC now CBI. His experiments working for Chloride a generation ago suggested to

him that the ALABC should spend less time on positive grid corrosion related to weight loss, which he regarded as a waste of time. Instead he considered that positive grid failure/breakup was due to stress corrosion in grain boundaries or casting defects. Whether he was right or wrong on this is less important than the fact that Ken, even at the age of 90, was keen to further the industry and mentor the next generation of experts to follow. My question which we need to think about on the sidelines of our meetings is a simple one — where are our mentors for the future generation and where is the next generation of technical and practical experts coming from?

And moving on to this year’s meetings. I believe we’ve got the right mix of presentations this year — there will be a balance between the practical, the theoretical, the commercial and not losing sight of the broader industry-view. Across the ABC and the International Secondary Lead Conference (ISLC which targets lead producers), technical and environmental experts, equipment producers and suppliers in this part of the lead industry specifically, we’re expecting as things stand, over 1,000 delegates and around 170 exhibitors. Delegates can expect 75 speakers over the five days of the two events. We have also had record numbers of papers come through for both the ABC and the ISLC. Interest in both events has definitely continued to increase. We have increasingly looked to push out the boundaries of what people can expect. The fact is that Mark Richardson and his team at Conference Works, who bear the brunt of the administration and organization of the events, are continually striving to get it better yearon-year. One thing I have learnt from Mark and his team is how conferences from other industries are run, for example we had a huge positive feedback about our audio and video system at Kuala Lumpur which was “inspired” from a telephone company function. It really helps improving the delegates’ experience — I think it’s exactly what an audience as distinguished as ours deserves! While the ABC will continue to cover a multitude of themes and topics — ensuring there is something for everyone attending the event driven by the speakers — there are certain sectors of the industry which have been gathering momentum globally and increased in-

VIEW FROM THE CHAIR terest in some of these specific themes may also be driving attendance. One of these notable themes is the increasing role of additives and separators; the other, and probably the biggest, is large scale energy storage. This is now a huge topic globally and a growing sector with investment pouring into many aspects of it. I know that a lot of conferences like to pick an overarching theme and revolve things around that. I prefer to ensure we cover many topics and allow speakers and delegates to dictate what is happening in the industry. We prefer to mix things up and make a little more eclectic. But it is also true that sectors such as energy storage are very topical right now and to a certain extent a rising tide lifts all boats in all chemistries. I see the energy storage phenomenon as very significant and similar in some ways to the e-bike phenomenon in China. But this is certainly not an Asian thing — it is a global sea-change. While energy storage is being encouraged and backed by governments across the world, thereby kick-starting energy storage projects in many forms, its momentum will transcend that — and is relevant to every country on the planet. Last, despite the name of the event and the fact it is always held in Asia, the conference is effectively a world event. It just happens to be in Asia! Most of the presentations and issues are global in their nature. Any of the trends you see on the global stage are reflected in what is happening in Asia and people continue to see great potential in this part of the world. To some extent we are seeing more com-panies from outside the region attend this event as they see it as a good way to network with Asian executives and better understand the dynamics in this part of the world.

THE INTERNATIONAL SECONDARY LEAD CONFERENCE (ISLC) The International Secondary Lead Conference (ISLC), which targets lead producers, technical and environmental experts, equipment producers and suppliers in this part of the lead industry specifically, starts the Monday before the ABC opens. This will be the sixth time the conference has appeared. The first conference was held in Macau in September 2009, followed by Hyderabad in 2011, Singapore in 2013, Bangkok 2015 and Kuala Lumpur in 2017. This series of conferences has been well attended with the programs receiving much positive feedback from attendees including researchers, academia and end users and operators at plant level. The aim of this conference is to share and increase knowledge over all segments of this vital industry, producing over 65% of the world’s lead supply. No other metal industry comes close to our mark. OPINION Collaboration. Consolidation. Innovation. These will be key issues for the battery industry to reflect on at ABC this year, writes Andy Bush

A golden age for batteries The lead and lead battery industries are at an exciting time which also heralds one of significant change. With a heritage dating back 160 years, the contribution and essential role of the lead battery is unarguable — from a technical product in its own right to today supporting a myriad of wider commercial and socioeconomic industries and functions is an incredible journey. Lead and lead battery market demand is testament of this development – over the last 30 years alone lead usage for battery production has increased from 5.5 million tonnes with 65% entering the battery market, to over 13 million tonnes with 85% being converted to batteries today. It’s clear that we are in a golden age for batteries. The technical and scientific effort being focused on battery innovation is also on a high — our own Consortium for Battery Innovation (CBI) has almost 100 members across the world supporting cutting-edge research to develop the next generation of lead battery technology. Partnering universities and dedicated research organisations as well as companies also shows the global required effort in specialities combining to deliver significant advancements in rechargeable energy storage. Since 2000, there has in fact been no net change in global lead demand outside of Asia — the region actually accounted for almost two-thirds of global lead consumption in 2018, growing from 50% in 2007. More than 90% of this lead use in Asia is in batteries. Of these battery ‘tigers’, in 2018 Japan consumed the most lead in the world for battery production, with South Korea and China also appearing in the top five and competing on an almost even par with Europe and the US. This demand is encouraging not only in the context of the figures but also the variety of factors pushing this market growth. In telecoms, the wireless market is pushing this with strong network growth in the evolution towards 5G in China and India. www.batteriesinternational.com

With over half the world’s lead battery producers being located in Asia, we’re very much looking forward to the ABC in September The banning of gasoline-powered motorbikes in China is boosting the e-bike market there — most of the 33 million units sold there each year are powered by lead batteries. In India, there is a strong demand for lead batteries across commercial, industrial as well as residential energy storage solutions. At 18ABC, CBI director, Alistair Davidson will set out the latest developments in its work and the future of lead battery innovation. With a large contingency of ILA and CBI members themselves also in attendance, presenting their latest news and innovations as well as enhancing their own knowledge, we’re proud to be partnering with such an exciting event. A meeting of such a size and remit presents an opportunity to also ensure our goals are aligned as an industry — unfortunately, despite the positive contribution of lead and lead-based

products to economies and societies worldwide, the regulatory threats to the industry are still very much alive. Our regulatory affairs director, Steve Binks will underline the risks we face and encourage the industry to together discuss whether these threats on the global regulatory landscape place a question mark over lead’s future. Although a challenging topic, it is an opportunity for us to co-ordinate our efforts across the industry. In 2018 the lead industry in Europe faced legislative challenges and it was it was only thanks to a strong and effective response that major consequences for our industry were averted. It showed us more clearly than anything else that we need to together make our case as powerfully and effectively as possible if we are to avoid similar pressures in the future. A complex landscape of challenges which needs a complex mix of solutions — this is where our ability as interlinked industries to align, co-operate and work together to communicate the importance of our products will be the key tool to further future-proofing. We must demonstrate how responsible we are as an industry and engage in the debates that matter to policy makers, be it reducing carbon, creating a circular economy, investing in new jobs and new skills and generating the batteries of the future through cutting-edge innovation. Our industries are helping achieve all these goals — but we need to do more to explain to policy makers and others just how we are working towards a sustainable future. ILA works every day with our partner associations around the world, towards that future. We’ve got a good story to tell and the right community to tell it — at 18ABC I will again call on the industry to join us in amplifying the voice asking for a level-playing field for technologies such as ours. CBI PROGRESS UPDATE

Fledgling consortium reports strong progress for early goals Less than six months after the Consortium for Battery Innovation was launched as a re-brand of the former ALABC, its director, Alistair Davidson, has told Batteries International he is delighted with the progress being made towards many of its goals and targets, including signing up new members, launching a technical roadmap and expanding its reach to other regions. “The overall objective was to position both the lead battery industry and the lead battery consortium as modern future innovative technology, and I think we’ve done a really excellent job,” he said. “I’m very pleased with how the re-brand has gone, the membership are very supportive, and that’s reflected in the fact that virtually all the companies that were members of ALABC are now members of the CBI.” In April, RSR Technologies’ senior process engineer Matt Raiford joined CBI to manage the standards and technical programmes. He was instrumental in groundbreaking work by RSR using the Advanced Photon Source synchrotron, housed at the Argonne National Laboratory, which resulted in the development of its patented Supersoft-Hycycle soft lead alloy. With CBI, Raiford will support and help to develop standards in design and requirements for additional batteries in automotive vehicles and other applications. He will also manage the research programme. “Lead batteries are on a precipice of intense growth, with energy storage demand growing in multiple markets,” Raiford said when he joined. “Energy storage systems will be key to providing stable utility, commercial, and consumer-level energy demands.” Davidson said so far this year there had been an uptick in new membership and he is hoping to see more members join before the end of the year. “And this has all happened since the re-launch,” said Davidson. “Off the back of BCI we had a lot of interest as well, which hasn’t just come about from the re-brand — it’s been backed up with our technical programme, with our roadmap setting specific goals and targets for research. The overall objective was to position the lead battery industry and the consortium as modern future innovative technology ... I’m pleased with how the rebrand has gone — Alistair Davidson we’re reviewing and are hoping to launch the first suite of projects soon. “We’ve had 21 proposals, we are reviewing them within the membership and will meet to make a recommendation for which projects we will fund this year.” CBI replaced the ALABC this February, with several re-launch announcements including one at the BCI meetings in New Orleans at the end of April, where the technical roadmap was unveiled. Two of the most important goals in the road map are increasing dynamic charge acceptance for automotive batteries by five times, and cycle life for energy storage applications also by five times — which would be crucial in helping to meet worldwide demand for energy storage, which is expected to jump in Europe alone 10fold by 2050. Advanced lead batteries are thought to be crucial for helping to meet that need. One of the CBI’s focuses is Asia. It

already holds annual meetings with battery manufacturers and suppliers in China. This is going to be cemented with the appointment of a Chinabased member of the CBI team. “We’re hoping to expand our activities into China and looking to appoint a suitable local resource in China to work for us,” said Davidson. “They will be based in China and their role will help to facilitate membership of CBI, representing CBI at conferences over there. They will have a science background and have the ability to organize events as well. “We have a meeting once a year in China, that’s really growing. The meeting in March there was a real success — we had three times as many delegates than at our previous meeting, and there was a lot of interest in the work of CBI and the future for lead batteries, particularly for energy storage. “It demonstrated the level of interest in lead batteries in China, and we’re looking to use this as a point from which to expand and bring in Chinese companies.” With huge growth also going on in India, the CBI is also reaching out to companies there, and says it would be interested in holding similar meetings there. “We already have three members in India, and are in discussions with a number of other companies, which means we are also considering the possibility of a meeting there next year,” said Davidson.

PROFILE: DARAMIC IN INDIA ABC executive platinum sponsor, Daramic, the international lead battery separator firm, continues to expand its business across Asia. The firm has been particularly active in India. Michael Halls reports on its activities in the country and why this is vital to its commercial strategy.

Boots on the ground Why local operations can pay off Location. Location. Location. It’s the mantra of realtors around the world. It’s also an issue that enters the world of commerce. Where you place your business can be vital to its health — considerations such as transport, the supply chain, the legal and tax framework and much more can be vital. And this becomes all the more vital when you’re doing business in the developing world, where issues such as the availability of expertise, a trained workforce and management with a knowledge of local market conditions can be vital. It’s a question of either having boots on the ground — and so being a local or regional player — or just an international shipper of western technology. Daramic, the international separator firm, made its first moves to have a regional presence in Asia in 2000. Its strategy was to have, at a later point, having a local presence as well. Daramic’s first steps in establishing a regional presence started with the opening of a manufacturing plant in Prachinburi, Thailand. For the next few years it steadily increased production at the facility — new lines were regularly increased. But Daramic was well aware that it needed a local presence as well as a regional one. In 2006 it formed a joint venture in China, following this up a year later with the acquisition of a plant Tianjin and establishing a new one in Xiangyang in 2011. Daramic realised that although China was a major market where it needed to have a huge local presence, the explosion in automotive and other demand was also happening in India. Moreover it was likely to grow at the pace of the earlier economic boom in China. In 2008, it acquired Super-Tech Battery Components Pvt in Bangalore,

in the south of the country. It was start of a much deeper participation in the country. Even before India’s electronics and computer driven revolution were firmly under way, Bangalore had a reputation as being at the centre of the country’s high-tech industry. Super-Tech, which entered the battery separator business in 1985, was not just well known but had a reputation for providing a quality product — a strength that Daramic knew it could build further on. Daramic itself, founded in 1930, has a well known history of innovation. In 1969 Daramic invented and developed the first polyethylene (PE) separator and became the first manufacturer worldwide of PE separators a couple of years later. And at the time of the Super-Tech acquisition the firm had already gone some way towards making its imprint across Asia — first in Prachinburi, Thailand in 2000 and later in Tianjin in China in 2006. “We realized immediately with SuperTech that this was a firm we could build

on, take its local expertise, add our international flavour and develop it as our quality brand,” says Dawn Heng, global marketing director for Daramic. With typical energy, Daramic advanced its plans further. By 2011 it had acquired a larger factory in Bangalore as it prepared to increase its production. Later that year it made the Bangalore facility the headquarters of its operations in the country. In 2013 it set up its Asian Technical Centre, also in Bangalore. This was specifically designed to explore making improved battery separators for the Asian region. “Our research centre gave us a unique chance to develop on the ground and test new products,” says Heng. “Local usage of the battery, the difference in the way batteries will be deployed are never going to be the same as in the western world. Everything from the depth of discharge and related partial state of charge is at odds with the way that batteries work elsewhere. “There’s also a huge range of different applications for batteries in India — just think of the range nowadays

You can’t simply take a template product from the US or Europe and put them as separators into Indian batteries,” he says. “Just think of the different road surfaces in the country, the different driving patterns, the different temperature and climate conditions. Separators play a vital part in the cycle life and performance of a battery and in India demands on the battery are rigorous.” There’s a related commercial advantage to this: the ability to sell a better product allows one to offer better battery life, better performance and increase the warranty. “That’s something other manufacturers can’t offer,” says Ahila Krishnamoorthy, managing director of Daramic Battery Separators India. “Local expertise and testing for R&D are vital in making a success in this market.” Further advances in the development of its Asian operations were the creation of a finishing facility in Baddi, in the north of India, in 2014. The year 2017 was a milestone year for Daramic India. One highlight in the spring was the opening of a major manufacturing plant in Gujarat. Daramic became the first company to invest in building the infrastructure to manufacture and locally supply PE battery separators in India. That year the firm also started the move to a new Asia Technical Centre near Bangalore. In July, Daramic launched RickLife — a robust polyethylene separator for flatplate e-rickshaw batteries. E-rickshaw batteries are exposed to a challenging deep cycle environment where premature battery failures are common. RickLife combines an improved glass mat, patented material formulation and unique profile rib design, which reduces positive active material shedding, water loss, grid corrosion and acid stratification. Daramic says the results show an improved cycle life of e-rickshaw batteries by as much as 50%. RickLife was the result of three years of research. In 2017-2018 Daramic India released HiCharge and XCharge, mostly for inverter batteries. Much of the firm’s recent research and testing has focused on improved separator design using different formulations and ribs that improve acid mixing and reduce acid stratification — which in turn reduces water loss and limits grid corrosion. www.batteriesinternational.com

Some of the outcomes of this research — which have also been achieved by working with Daramic’s main R&D centre at Owensboro in the US state of Kentucky — have been fascinating. These include a reversal of imposing the standard western template on an Indian battery. So, for example, one key product in this range, known as DuraLife, followed the unusual pattern of being launched in the Asian market first and then two years later in 2017 was released worldwide. Krishnamoorthy says that local operations offer a wide variety of other benefits — from distribution to marketing to customer support and much more. Essentially it’s having boots on the ground. “In terms of distribution, we have regional managers spread across the country and centres where our separators are stored. We can respond quickly to our 1,000 plus customers’ needs — since very early on we have been able to produce all that’s required. By comparison, the delivery time from the US or Europe can be a couple of months. “We understand our customers’ local needs far better than someone from outside the subcontinent. We are able, for example, to offer almost immediate customer support if needed.” Another advantage of being locally based is that this boots-on-the-ground approach has a variety of side benefits. “We’re changing the relationship we have with our customers. For the last five years Daramic has been running a series of training seminars open to more than 2,000 local battery manufacturers in the country,” says Heng. “We’ve become a solutions provider rather than just a supplier.”

18ABC: CONFERENCE LIFE The Asia Battery Conference has come a long way since its inception. As the first full lead battery conference it had to invent itself from scratch. But its special flavour — mixing the community aspect of the industry with a firm grounding of hard-hitting presentations — remains.

The way we were … Looking back at the presentations and delegates for the first ABC gives a surprising viewpoint on how the industry has changed since 1986. Perhaps the most striking is the almost complete lack of involvement with, or by, China. Although the first attempts at market socialism had already started by China’s leader Deng Xiaoping in the early 1980s, the country was a long, long way from becoming the industrial giant of the future. In the regional presentations — India, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines and Taiwan were featured — the lack of China to today’s viewer looks astonishing. And out of the 137 delegates just two were from China. Meanwhile non-China — Taiwan and Hong Kong (1ABC was held 11 years before Hong Kong became part of the People’s Republic) accounted for 19 delegates. It’s strange to think that today’s battery giants from China were not even gleams in their founders’ eyes. Equally interesting in another direction was how prescient some of the thinking was behind the presentations. Some 30 years before today’s excitement about linking renewables from sources such as solar panels to modern electricity grids was being debated — Kaiichi Shimizu from Furukuwa Battery was presenting on Lead Acid Batteries for Photovoltaic Systems and Rainer Kiessling from Hagen Batterie was talking about Lead Acid Batteries for Load Levelling Applications. And, of course there’s so many companies that are now little more than names from the past. Hagen Batterie being a case in point. Two years after Kiessling gave his presentation, the family firm had become part of Spanish battery firm, Tudor — which again slipped into Exide Technologies’ embrace in 1995. companies and brands among the delegates — Bitrode, Digatron, Sonnenschein, Wirtz, Yuasa as well as the fading network of the once mighty Chloride. And, although the firms had yet to merge Paul Fink from Sorfin was at the conference as was his eventual partner Takahiro Yoshimura, from Yoshimura Products, (now the firms are best known as SF, Sorfin Yoshimura). And some things haven’t changed either — and that’s for the good. All the 1ABC papers were vetted and edited by David Rand, then principal research scientist at Australia’s CSIRO. David, now in retirement from CSIRO but still active as an adviser to the Consortium for Battery Innovation, continues that tradition and has also vetted and edited this year’s papers.

Looking beyond the papers was the social life surrounding the ABC which soon developed into a regular theme of the conference. “One of the enduring qualities of the ABC is that there’s still a family spirit to the event,” says one battery veteran who has been to virtually every meeting from ABC’s inception. “It’s one of the things that came out in the early meetings — and that’s despite the fact that the event has grown in size enormously. “One of the traditions in the early conferences after the closing gala dinner was a sing-song where delegates of each country would stand up and sing a national song. “It was hilarious as well as being warm-spirited,” he says, “You’d’ve been amazed at the songs we sang , the barracking, the cheering and fun.”

The initiative is set to run throughout the entire 18ABC meetings. Away from the five-star hotels and exotic resorts that dot the seeming paradise of Bali, is another country. A land where poverty stalks the small villages away from the coast where the basics — education, health provision and even food for the smallest children — are frequently not available. Rather than let the Asian Battery Conference remain in its own blinkered bubble, the event organizers, Conference Works and Sorfin Yoshimura have decided to do something about it. “We intend to give something back to Bali through

Market needs from idle start–stop vehicles are requiring the lead acid battery to operate at partial stateof-charge (PSoC), while maintaining a long life. Other energy storage applications, such as the harnessing of renewable energy, opportunitycharging of fork trucks and heavy road trucks, are also requiring PSoC operation. To meet these challenging demands, many have proposed more costly solutions that include lithium batteries and valve-regulated lead acid batteries. Starting with the flooded lead acid battery, this presentation will highlight many incremental modifications and their impact on extending cycle-life and offering a pathway to meet the challenging industry goals. It will also address the impact on other key functions that include charge acceptance and water loss.

The presentation will describe the advantageous effects that the absorptive glass-mat separators manufactured by Hua Yang AGM have on different types of lead acid battery. Tests have been undertaken to verify the superior physical/chemical properties of the AGM, such as good tensile strength, strong anti-puncture, strict impurity control, and sustaining long deep-cycle life. Separators for lead acid batteries are traditionally manufactured from the extrusion and extraction of ultra high molecular-weight polyethylene/silica/ oil mixtures to form microporous ribbed sheets. A relatively large amount of process oil is left behind in the PE/ SiO2 separator to protect the polymer chains from oxidative attack. In the ENTEK model, certain molecules within the process oil are preferentially oxidized and can become solubilized in sulfuric acid, while preventing polymer chain scission or crosslinking. Many battery manufacturers believe it is important to limit the amount of oil in the separator to achieve lower electrical resistance or prevent ‘black scum’ formation. This presentation dispels these myths and demonstrates the importance of controlling the process oil content in the 11wt.% –22wt.% range to maintain good elongation and mechanical properties. Furthermore, there will be a report of an examination of separator mechanical properties in both a pristine and oxidized state that uses a new approach for measuring fatigue resistance in puncture and elongation modes. In addition to impacting separator properties, oxygen is also important to battery performance. Water loss has become a topic of great interest, particularly in Enhanced Flooded Batteries, batteries that are cycled at a partial state-of-charge. While it is generally accepted that VRLA batteries rely on the crossover of oxygen generated at the positive electrode during charge to be reduced

PICK OF THE PRESENTATIONS An idiosyncratic view of some of the presentations to view, courtesy of the Batteries International team

Pick n’mix at the ABC lead batteries in the global market, together with future developments in alternative technologies. This presentation will cover the following areas: (i) the current market of LABs worldwide in terms of shipment, scope and future growth analysis; (ii) trends in the duties demanded from LABs in automotive starter, industrial use, E-bike and other transportation service, UPS and back-up power; (iii) the current market and its applications pertaining to the Chinese LAB industry. With presentations on almost every technical or commercial aspect of the lead battery world, ABC will continue to offer a snapshot of the major trends at work in the industry. In the offices of Batteries International there was a lively debate over which presentations would be better than the rest. We decided that we would choose a pick of the day for each of the three days of the conference but quickly swapped the idea ass there were immediate timetable clashes, most notably three excellent presentations on the first day. In terms of the future, we recognized that five new areas of research are going to open up new possibilities for yet better, yet more ‘advanced’ lead batteries of the future. Unashamedly borrowed from a recent presentation from Exide Technologies’ Francesco Trinidad, these are: • nano-structured active materials to improve energy efficiency • lead grid coatings to protect against sulfation • new lead alloys to improve life in high temperature • alternative current collectors such as aluminium, copper, titanium to reduce weight • thin bipolar electrodes to increase power and charge acceptance. We first heard Mark speaking at the Vienna ELBC meeting and were struck by the extraordinary depth of research and most particularly the quality that he brought to his presentation. The overall theme might seem anodyne but the detail within the information will be superb. We expect various surprises to emerge too.

Our third choice was partly influenced by the extensive research we conducted early this year for our India yearbook, but mostly because all the economic experts are saying India will be the next China in terms of being an industrial powerhouse. And this is being reiterated as clear policy from the top of the government by newly re-elected prime minister Modi. As an aside, this speaker seems ready to talk about real time testing in detail of the UltraBattery, which is irritatingly absent from the prime owner of the technology, East Penn.

Energy Storage Technology — the Rapidly Evolving Scenario in India Sagar Sen Gupta, manager, product development (VRLA), Exide Industries Wednesday 4.45pm

India is on a rapid path towards embracing different energy storage technologies as an integral part of the electricity system in the country. Notwithstanding the fact that, given the unreliability of grid power in large parts of the country, the common Indian household has a history of using a storage system, it is the push towards renewable energy that has seen the advent of utilityscale energy storage. Under government guidelines, energy tenders that pertain to renewable energy are increasingly including clauses on the deployment of energy-storage systems. This has facilitated pilot projects with different energy storage technologies to gauge their respective robustness and challenges. In India, whereas lead acid and lithium ion batteries continue to be the most common used in India, other battery chemistries are also vying to become the preferred choice. Among the recent advancements in lead acid batteries, the UltraBattery has been demonstrated to broaden the capability of the traditional design. None of us were quite sure that we would understand in full the technical content of his paper but we were all agreed that this looked like something very new on the horizon for lead batteriy technology with a long life expectancy are attributes that have allowed the lead acid battery to remain competitive in energy storage applications such as power smoothing and energy shifting for solar and wind energy installations. UltraBattery installations in telecom towers have demonstrated significant reduction in diesel operation, especially in off-grid situations. The gel tubular design of lead acid battery, which marries the tubular robustness with the user friendliness of valve-regulated technology, is also attracting attention. High reliability in deep-discharge cycling with the capability of accommodating extended periods of high temperature remain the cornerstones of this technology. More than 20 MWh of capacity have been commissioned at different micro-grid sites in the past couple of years. Field performance data show that these facilities are performing satisfactorily under demanding conditions. Case studies conducted by Exide Industries, together with field data from energy storage installations in India, will be presented to highlight the market segments in which the above-mentioned benefits are important.

Closing selection

Our final choice was difficult because although we liked the look of Francisco Trinidad’s presentation on carbon, DCA versus water loss, we could see there were several other papers that also looked at the subject from different angles, though perhaps not with the same authority that he brings to the subject. We’ve also really liked Doug Lambert’s closing review on the last day of the conference that he’s been doing since 16ABC. His candour and sincerity about the industry are refreshing. That said, in the end we plumped for Friday afternoon’s talk from Boris Monahov. None of us was quite sure that we would understand in full the technical content of his paper, but we were all agreed that this looked like something very new on the horizon of lead batteries.

Crystal Control Technology (CCT) for Extending Life of Stationary Batteries Boris Monahov, chief scientific officer, WaveTech Friday 1:30 pm – 1:55pm

Crystal Control Technology (CCT) by WaveTech is based on the effect of electrode potential changes on the rate of electro-crystallization in ionic solutions. Pulse-shaped potential changes with specific amplitude, duration and front slope applied to the electrode alter the ionic distribution in the electric double-layer on the electrode surface. Ions accelerated by the changes in the electric field increase the local oversaturation, which creates conditions for easier nucleation and more homogeneous crystal growth, depending on electrode overpotential. WaveTech has designed a small electronic device (BEAT) that applies CCT to lead acid batteries by superimposing small modulating current pulses to the charge current (cycling or floating). The device is powered by the charging battery/cell itself. Crystal growth processes in both plates are optimized, while the effect on the positive plate is more pronounced. Charge efficiency is improved with every charge cycle (or as a function of time on floating). The effect for batteries with CCT becomes stronger with every cycle. The capacity decline during cycling is substantially slowed down without requiring any special maintenance. The presentation will detail the main improvements in battery performance and operation. The BEAT device can be connected to WaveTech’s monitoring system and detects signs of early battery degradation including conditions that cause thermal runaway. It transmits data, analyses and notifications to the operator. Such information helps to reduce costs, automate operations and improve service reliability.

The AddESun project, a public research project between Fraunhofer ICS, Exide Technologies, Evonik Resource Efficiency GmbH, RWTH Aachen University, SGL Carbon Group, and PENOX, is undertaking a systematic screening programme for new and improved additive classes, as well as for synergistic interactions between different additives.

The project was established in late 2017 and will run for three years. This paper provides a review of the general approach used in the AddESun project and offers insight into the screening strategy and the

This presentation reports mitigation strategies for addressing the issues of sulfation and grid corrosion in lead acid batteries through electrode and electrolyte additives and surface modifications of the plate and grid. Various types of carbon and metal oxide composites, such as C–SnO2, boron doped graphene and TiO2reduced graphene oxide have been successfully added to the negative active-material to reduce the problem of sulfation. The C-based additives have been found to provide greater conductivity, to control PbSO4 growth, to act as a capacitor, and to improve the overall electrochemical performance of lead acid cells. It has been found that a C–SnO2/ TiO2 composite occupies the pores of NAM, accesses electrolyte in the interior of the plate, restricts PbSO4 growth and reduces hydrogen

A surface modification strategy by depositing poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) on the surface of the negative plate has been also studied to address the issue of sulfation. Lead acid cells assembled with PEDOT-coated negative electrodes showed ~25 % increase in initial discharge capacity, excellent cycle performance at the C/5 rate, lower impedance, reduced hydrogen evolution, capacitive behaviour and a boost in charge-acceptance in comparison with conventional cells. To address the issue of positive grid corrosion, a conducting polymer coating of polypyrrole (PPY) on the positive grid has been developed. The coating increases the corrosion resistance, inhibits the oxygen evolution rate, acts as an adhesion layer that helps to improve conductivity between the active mass layer and the grid, and reduces the formation of a passivation layer (PbO, PbSO4) on the surface of the grid that, in turn, enhances capacity retention during prolonged cycling.

It will show how to improve the DCA performance with standard Lamp Black 101 by optimizing the concentration of Carbon Black and lignosulfonate in the NAM. This century, new-generation batteries are expected to provide high dynamic charge-acceptance and long cycle-life performance under highrate partial state-of-charge (HRPSoC) duty. It has been widely demonstrated that the DCA performance and the cycle-life of batteries can be significantly improved by applying new types of conductive carbon black. Unfortunately, however, water consumption becomes more pronounced with the increased amount of carbon black in the negative active-material (NAM). This presentation will describe conductive carbon black grades recently developed by Orion that can provide high DCA performance while maintaining water consumption/ hydrogen evolution at an accepted level. It will show how to improve the DCA performance with standard lamp black 101 by optimizing the concentration of carbon black and lignosulfonate in the NAM. This is a significant finding since lamp black always ensures a lower water consumption for lead acid batteries.

A wide range of inorganic and organic materials are used as additives to the electrolyte and to the negative and positive electrodes of lead acid cells to improve, for example, their conductivity, enhance battery capacity and cyclelife, suppress hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions on the negative and positive electrodes, and retard electrode corrosion. The major factors contributing to the decline in capacity of the positive plates during chargedischarge cycling are progressive deterioration of the electrical contact between the PbO2 particles of the positive active-mass and the grid, and formation of a layer of PbSO4 crystals on the electrode surface that isolates a fraction of the active mass and thus reduces its utilization. During charging a lead acid battery, the positive grid is oxidized and a boundary layer forms between the grid and the active mass. The main goal of the present study is to improve the cycling performance of positive plates by adding inorganic or organic surfactants to the H2SO4 solution. The surfactants under test are organic compounds (anionic or cationic) or inorganic phosphate material. This research is aimed at understanding how the tested surfactants influence the morphology of PbSO4 and PbO2 crystals. The basic effects of the different surfactants added to the electrolyte on the electrochemical reactions that proceed on a lead or lead alloy (Pb-Sb, Pb-Ca-Sn) electrode are evaluated by cyclic voltammetry. The morphology of PbO2 or PbSO4 crystals formed on the surface of the investigated electrodes is also examined. Experimental data from an initial capacity test and a 17.5% DoD cycling test for start-stop lead acid batteries show that cells with organic additives give about 20% improvement in cycle-life. Furthermore, the cycle-life of cells with an inorganic phosphate material is beyond 2000 cycles, which is twice that of obtained from the control cell.

The majority of industrial battery manufacturers are using red lead in their positive active material to cut down on the consumption of energy during formation as well as to shorten the formation time for the cells. Over the past decade, red lead has been increasingly used in automotive batteries to reduce the formation time and energy.

In particular for EFBs and AGM batteries, different grades of red lead in combination with Barton or ball-mill oxide are favoured to achieve the desired performance. Two years ago, PENOX set up a program to identify the red lead-tobattery oxide ratio in combination with the optimum red lead particlesize distribution (PSD) to enhance significantly the performance of industrial and automotive batteries. Based on results presented in a research report of Matsushita Electric Industrial from the late 1990s, PENOX has worked on the effect of different red lead oxidation levels, PSD and also the deviation of acid absorption values in relation to the tamped density. Early trials showed some interaction between red lead and battery oxides that affect the battery performance, especially under different states-of-charge (17.5% DoD) and life-time

performance tests (50% DoD). As PENOX Korea can produce a wide range of different red lead grades and battery oxides using Barton reactor technology, a Design of Experiment methodology (DoE) was used for the most important variables to reduce the overall number of tests. Paste preparation, curing of the positive plates, active-material characterisation and all relevant electrical tests were carried out in our German R&D laboratory. A strong relationship between the particle-size distribution, the oxidation level of the red lead and the battery performance has been identified. The red lead production process and therefore the type of red lead added to the positive paste is significant. This has enabled identification of the most suitable grade of red lead for most of the battery requirements according to the battery oxide in use. The outcome of this research provided the opportunity to produce red lead grades in the PENOX factory at YeongCheon, South Korea, that are most suitable for the battery oxide produced by the battery customer to deliver the optimum battery performance.

WIRTZ Manufacturing at the 14ELBC;

ZESAR has a reputation for being one of the most reliable high-specifi cation battery equipment and technology suppliers in Europe. Its founder, Mr Zeki set up what was to become Zesar in 1976 by creating the company SARICAM Kalipcilik. In 1986, SARICAM formed a joint venture with a hydraulic pump producer under the name ATA SARICAM. This developed battery machines and equipment and the new venture successfully made its fi rst exports to TUDOR, the battery fi rm, in Spain. In 2002, Zeki reorganized ATA SARICAM and formed ZESAR. His idea was simple: to specialize in certain segments of the battery manufacturing process and Zeki decided to concentrate on the assembly processes of battery manufacturing starting from plate enveloping. In 2008 ZESAR started to use its own patented designs in machines. The following year, the company launched EVOLINE; its low cost high performance new generation assembly line. In 2011, the Robotic Transfer System was introduced to make the whole assembly process fully automatic. What makes ZESAR unique is its ability to develop machines with customized requirements. By working closely with battery producers and listening to their particular needs, every machine can be specifically designed and additional features included.
