One size doesn’t fit all Long ago when Toyota was not the automotive giant it later became, its chief executive wanted to make a push for selling its Corolla into emerging markets. The firm took the unusual step of tackling, so legend goes, Nigeria first. But rather than send in high level market research firms, focus groups and the like, Toyota reps were told to sit at traffic lights in downtown Lagos and Abuja and note the colours the people wore, how many people were to a vehicle, what the car carried. The result was a market success as pick-up trucks in a very exuberant set of colours sold in their thousands. For the fact is: one size doesn’t fit all. And if we try and push one template on the world it can backfire. To give another example, Mitsubishi decided, like many car makers, that Spanish words sounded exotic — distinguished, even. The result was the Mitsubishi Pajero. The cars ran off the assembly lines and sold well across Europe, Asia and the States. But they soon came a cropper in South America where a pajero is slang for a person that self-abuses. (The type that is said to make you go blind.) And this has a direct relevance to the battery industry and our attendance at events such as ABC. One size doesn’t fit all. The western model of how a battery should be made, distributed, marketed and sold doesn’t necessarily fit into the Asian world. Nor vice versa. Here, as attendees at the ABC, we have a chance for both sides of the industry — developed and developing world — to come together and understand the different processes at work. Moreover, we all know that this goes beyond a simplistic attention to detail or continuous improvement — things which are found in the

genetic lifeblood of all good businesses around the world. The North American/European concept is to strive for a balance between cost and excellence in its products. But sometimes product excellence is not required. If you’re prepared to change a rather shoddy battery every couple of years but pay a fraction of the price, perhaps that’s a better situation to be in? In a rich society does the cost margin between an $80 battery and a $90 one matter so much. But in a poorer society the difference between a $30 one and a $90 one is a world of earnings. Moreover, in a poor country where a spent lead battery has value, there’s no need for a government incentive or programme to recycle it. “The recycling rate in most parts of developing Asia is 101%,” is one of the favourite quips of an ABC speaker. Oddly enough this balance between price and product used to be said about the difference between manufacturing in Europe and America. The European entrepreneur would invent the biro and sell a few of them for thousands of dollars while the American would sell millions of them for a few cents and a few cents of gain. And, of course, make the larger profit. The Asian Battery Conference is one of Batteries International’s favourite events. There is a flavour to the meetings that highlights a different set of needs, expectations and ambitions. For a global industry, it’s only right that Western battery manufacturing moves ever closer geographically to the markets it serves — but given the leaps in quality and in price now being seen in everything from separator technology to plate making, maybe this is the time for the West to learn some lessons from the East. uala Lumpur — literally “where two muddy rivers join” — is no longer the clump of huts when a few dozen Chinese tin miners founded the city in 1857. Today, KL is Malaysia’s largest city and home to some 7 million Malaysians, known locally as KLites. But despite the crowds be aware that the KLites are some of the friendliest in the world. Your average Malaysian, according to one Facebook survey had 230+ friends — the highest in the world. (The poor Japanese on the same survey had just 29.) The initial success of the tin mining industry, established it as a centre for trade. Provisions were exchanged for tin, and from these muddy waters — opulence and opportunity emerged.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO

TO MAGNIFICENCE That said one only has to look at the ghastly Petronas Towers — once the tallest building in the world and certainly one of the ugliest — to realise that Malaysia is not a poor country. The site of the towers includes a huge aquarium, six-storey mall, science museum, art gallery, parklands… Not to mention the double-decker sky bridge, 175m above street level, which provides spectacular views of the city.

Time to enjoy the local electrolyte: a Selangor Sling, The SkyBar is a 10-minute walk from the Mandarin Oriental. The Menara Tower is about 20 minutes by taxi.

High fliers Talking of which, for those with a head for heights and an appetite for haute cuisine, try the revolving Menara Tower. At 282m above street level, Atmosphere 360 is Malaysia’s most vertiginous restaurant. As it turns, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the sprawling cityscape. Also in the clouds is the SkyBar — an award-winning restaurant and cocktail bar The SkyBar boasts the best (or worst if you like) views of the Petronas Towers.

BOTANICAL BLISS: Perdana Botanical Garden Known locally as the Lake Gardens, there’s plenty on offer for those seeking refuge from the bustling city. Spanning 227 acres, the landscaped park acts as part of KL’s green lung. If you’re too exhausted to amble down the tree-lined boulevards, you can hire a Segway. The main features of Perdana include its Sunken Garden with its manicured hedges. There’s also the Orchid Garden, which holds over 800 species, and the Hibiscus Garden. Aside from the obvious appeal of its tearoom after a long walk, there’s a series of pools, lakes, and even a waterfall to enjoy. The garden is some 20 minutes away by taxi.

A small tree, Tongkat Ali, is called Malay Viagra because it has shown to have a testosterone-like effect. Extracts are used in power drinks combined with coffee and ginseng. Also popular are the chewing of betel nuts, the dried seed of the Areca or Pinang palm tree. They are prized for their mildly narcotic and supposedly aphrodisiac qualities. Chewing it is said to freshen the breath, relax the mind, and stimulate passion.

TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

Hindus still account for 6% of the population. With your guide, you’ll explore their oldest Hindu temple, Sri Maka Mariamman, which has been a place of devotion since the 1870s. Next visit the Chinese, Chan See Shu Yuen temple is set within elaborately decorated, spacious courtyards. The tour continues through KL’s buzzing street markets. You’ll also have the chance to enjoy Malaysia’s national drink teh tarik, which is tea that is thrown across a distance of about a metre by Mamak men, from one cup to another, with no spillages. The idea is to let it cool down for customers, but it has become a Malaysian art form.

Batterymen beware! In 1997, the Malaysian state of Kelantan decreed that the lights would be kept on in all movie cinemas to deter people from kissing and cuddling.

• Malaysia is home to one of the world’s largest populations of king cobras (Ophiophagus Hannah). They are the world’s longest venomous snakes with lengths up to 6 metres. The longest known king cobra was kept captive at the London Zoo and grew to around 18.8 feet before being put down at the outbreak of World War II. • Malaysia is the only place in the world where the war against Communism was won. The 12year guerrilla warfare conducted by Communist forces was finally put down in 1960. This period was known as the Malayan Emergency

GETTING AROUND KL is a relatively easy to get around on public transport. The Hop-On Hop-Off bus service is a convenient way to travel, following a circular route — a day ticket costs RM25 ($6). The route includes many of the city’s attractions. KL train services include underground, overground and a monorail. These aren’t timetabled, but trains run frequently. Tickets are available at the entrance, and most staff speak English. Platforms are marked in English with the direction in which the train is headed. The central station is a 15 minute walk from the hotel. A tip for travellers — the train map is not posted at most stations. As the organizers of the 17th Asian Battery Conference prepare for one of its most successful events ever, Mark Stevenson, its chairman, explains why he thinks it is so popular but plays down any hype around it potentially being the biggest ABC ever. Mark Stevenson, chairman of the Asian Battery Conference, is always wary about talking up the success and contribution that the ABC makes to the global batteries industry. Despite its continued growth and success as a conference, attracting notable speakers from all over the world, his view of what the conference is for and what it should do is relatively simple. “I don’t like to overcomplicate it or over-sell it,” Stevenson says. “I am not keen on using numbers of attendees as a reflection of success either. For me,

it is just about putting on a regular, quality conference for people. When I took over as chairman 18 years ago, it was a fairly technical conference. “We have kept some of that aspect of it but it is also about the industry just getting together and making new friends and networking. There is a whole range of things that we can now offer around the exhibition that are good. It is about offering people a whole package.” But Stevenson cannot avoid discussing the event’s continued success completely. While the last event, held

despite success

in Bangkok in 2015, was a success attracting a record attendance of 856 participants and 145 exhibitors, he anticipates growth this year. “Bangkok two years ago was a fantastic event but every year we aim to get better and really surprise delegates with what we offer,” he says. “The numbers are going very well again this year. It is not about breaking records for us because that is just one measurement of a good event but we are certainly delighted with the way things are shaping up so far this year.”

The Melbourne-based batteries executive says attendance is looking good for the 17th Asian Battery Conference. Across the ABC and the International Secondary Lead Conference (ISLC), which targets lead producers, technical and environmental experts, equipment producers and suppliers in this part of the lead industry specifically, he is expecting as things stand, more than 800 delegates look likely to attend and he is anticipating 170 exhibitors, the maximum capacity the conference can take.

“The conference is effectively a world event with executives from many countries attending. It just happens to be in Asia. Most of the presentations and issues are — understandably — global in their nature.”

And that is with some three months to go. Delegates can expect 75 speakers over the five days of the two events. “They are good numbers and I believe both events will be extremely well attended,” he says. “We have also had record numbers of papers come through for both the ABC and the ISLC. Interest in both events has definitely continued to increase.” He attributes this partly to the city

that is hosting the events in September. Kuala Lumpur is a fantastic place to visit, he says, and many attendees will be looking forward to visiting the city for the first time. Another reason for the growing popularity of the event is due to the efforts of the organizing committee to reinvent and revitalize the event in recent years. “We have increasingly looked to push out the boundaries of what people can expect. I think this philosophy has had a great deal to do with our continued success and growth,” Stevenson says. “The fact is that we always strive to get better,” he says. “We aim to always improve the programme, get better speakers in, make sure we have good entertainment and try and work with the best people wherever possible. “It used to be more of a dry, very technical conference but it has evolved a lot since its early days. It is now a rounded conference for the whole of the lead-acid batteries world. We try to cater for everything, whether you are a sales person, technical engineer or just want to meet and greet.” Another strand of this approach and desire to invigorate the event has involved efforts to get more young people involved in the event – or the new generation of battery entrepreneurs as Stevenson describes them. He also acknowledges that, while the ABC will continue to cover a multitude of themes and topics — ensuring there is something for everyone

HEAD: ANTICIPATED PRESENTATIONS AND THEMES Some 75 speakers will present at the ABC this year. Stevenson says it is hard to generalize about any themes that may be prominent this year but he does note that energy storage and carbon will be two notable themes. There are many speakers he is looking forward to hearing but specifically mentions two when pushed: Ray Kubis, chairman of Gridtential Energy, and Norbert Maleschitz, vice president of research & development for EMEA at Exide Europe. Kubis will discuss the emergence of major battery installations to accompany the electricity grid or the intermittent renewable generation of electricity on or off grids, which are starting to appear, in locations from California

to Australia to Germany, and the new generation of efﬁcient hybrid electric vehicles coming onto the market. He will explain that these emerging applications are accelerating the growth prospects in capacity and value of the batteries to be used world-wide and the implications of that. Maleschitz will discuss the generation of electric energy and how the related transmission and distribution system are undergoing significant changes. He will say that battery energy storage systems is one building block in the future energy system to tackle the related needs for both energy storage and dispatchable electric power. He will look at the implications of this globally.

attending the event driven by the speakers — there are certain sectors of the industry which have been gathering momentum globally and increased interest in some of these specific themes may also be driving attendance. One of these notable themes is carbon; the other, and probably the biggest, is large scale energy storage. Stevenson says this is now a huge topic globally and a growing sector with investment pouring into many aspects of it. With a number of speakers covering this topic, this should help attendance of the ABC. “I know that a lot of conferences like to pick an overarching theme and revolve things around that. I prefer to ensure we cover many topics and allow speakers and delegates to dictate what is happening in the industry,” Stevenson says. “I prefer to mix things up and maybe be a little more eclectic. “But it is also true that sectors such as energy storage are very topical right now and to a certain extent a rising tide lifts all boats. I see the energy storage phenomenon as very significant and similar in some ways to the e-bike phenomenon in China. But this is certainly not an Asian thing — it is a global thing.” He also suggests that, while energy storage is being encouraged and backed by governments in various countries, thereby kick-starting ener-

He says in China, for example, smaller businesses are starting to install their own systems linking solar cells and batteries. “It is not necessarily driven by government, it is driven by need, ” he says. This event has now become the preeminent conference in Asia and as things stand it looks as if that growth is going to continue. But Stevenson says that despite the name of the event and the fact it is always held in Asia, the conference is effectively a world event with executives from many countries attending. “It just happens to be in Asia,” he says. “Most of the presentations and issues are global in their nature.” “Any of the trends you see on the global stage are reflected in what is happening in Asia and people see great potential in this part of the world. To some extent we are seeing more companies from outside the region attend this event as they see it as a good way to network with Asian executives and better understand the dynamics in this part of the world. ” The origins of the ABC started in 1987 through an organization called the Zinc and Lead Asian Service, which was a collection of Australian and other Asian-based companies involved in smelting and related industries. Their main objective, he says, was to promote learning and education around the use of lead. The conference was launched in its current format in 1997. Many things have changes since then, Stevenson says. He is now looking forward to the biggest and most popular event the ABC has ever held — whatever the reasons for its growth and continued success.

THE INTERNATIONAL SECONDARY LEAD CONFERENCE (ISLC) The International Secondary Lead Conference (ISLC), which targets lead producers, technical and environmental experts, equipment producers and suppliers in this part of the lead industry specifically, starts the Monday before the ABC opens. This will be the fifth time the conference has appeared. The first conference was held in Macau in September 2009, followed by Hyderabad in 2011, Singapore in 2013 and Bangkok 2015. This series of conferences has been well attended with the programs receiving much positive feedback from attendees including researchers, academia and end users and operators at plant level. “The aim of this conference is to share and increase knowledge over all segments of this vital industry, producing over 65% of the world’s lead supply,” says Stevenson.

“No other metal industry comes close to our mark. We will bring together all aspects of secondary lead smelting; discussing plant design, smelting regimes, refractories, burner design, slag formation and structures, pollution and environmental control amongst other presentations. “It is a further aim of the conference to open up for discussion all aspects of plant operations and control as to give not only operators, but people interested in secondary smelting a better understanding of the processes involved in the industry.” It will be opened by Andy Bush head of the ILA and who will deliver the welcome address and keynote speech, launching a multitude of other speakers talking on a wide range of subjects covering the world of secondary lead.

Reasons to be cheerful (part 17) Stop-start technology, changing environmental regulations, developments in energy storage and the battle with lithium-ion batteries are just some of the topics attendees anticipate discussing at the Asian Battery Conference this year. Almost all were unequivocal in praising the quality of the meetings — which happens every two years — describing it as a must-attend event in Asia. Mark Boghe, who is responsible for the industrial segment of non-woven products in Europe and also coordinates the global battery business at Owens Corning, says he considers ABC the one event he cannot miss. “We see ABC as the most important conference in its field in Asia. We’ve participated several times and have always had good contacts with existing customers and new prospects,” he says. He says that though he is not completely up to date with the Asian market, he anticipates the topics will include the impact of environmental regulation, competition with other battery chemistries especially lithium-ion and the penetration of start/stop technology. In terms of which talks he will attend, Boghe says that his interest extends to presentations from battery manufacturers and start/stop applications. KD Merz, vice president of technology and a member of the executive board at Abertax Technologies, stresses his interest in energy storage and his belief that ABC will be a good place to discuss this. “Asia is an important market for energy storage technology and the ABC is the best conference in this area to meet customers,” Merz says. As such, he expects energy generation and storage to be some of the main topics covered at ABC. But he adds that he would be interested in any presentation covering “any new development in battery technology and in particular battery applications in the energy generation and storage sector”. Stuart McKenzie, chief executive of ArcActive, agrees that ABC is a great

place to meet industry participants explaining that its greatest value to him is the “side conversations” he ends up having with other delegates. He is keen to push at the conference the growing importance of Dynamic Charge Acceptance (DCA) and the progress ArcActive has made in this area, which he describes as “now accepted as a critical new battery attribute, which has become the new basis of competition”. Herbert Giess, a private consultant, will be a first time attendee to ABC, moving onto the event after first going to the International Secondary Lead Conference (ISLC) in the same venue. He believes that what he describes as the lead-acid versus lithium-ion “war” will probably be the biggest talking point. Angel Kirchev an R&D engineer and project manager at the Laboratory for Electrochemical Storage in the French Commission of Atomic and Alternative Energies (CEA), describes the event as a fantastic place to showcase the work his team has been doing and its implications. “It represents an excellent opportunity to present the work of our team and the potential of CEA-LITEN for international collaborations with industrial and academic partners from the domain of the energy storage located in the Asia and Pacific regions,” he says. He too sees the lead-acid versus lithium-ion dynamic as being a potential big discussion point especially in relation to the fast-growing energy storage markets. But he adds that a wide range of subjects will also be of interest since specific presentations on lead acid batteries are sparse at other events. “Since the lead-acid battery technology is discussed during very few major meetings of the industry and the academics, for me it won’t be too much to say that I am interested in the whole event,” he says. pany is the principal partner of the 2017 Asian Battery Conference and has been the main sponsor with ABC for last couple of years. He says this is because of the significant potential the company sees in the region. “We have a long-term commitment to Asia and recognize that there is strong demand for batteries and separators in this region. Fears for future lead

Farid Ahmed, principal analyst, lead markets at Wood Mackenzie, will present a paper which has the intriguing working title of ‘Future lead battery demand: a tasty prospect, or is someone eating our lunch?’ In his presentation, Ahmed will hit a potentially negative note as he speculates about the combination of factors that could lead to the sector shrinking in the future. “The demise of the lead battery has been predicted for decades, but will the combination of ever-tightening legislation, rival chemistries and new technology final sound the death knell for this venerable battery?” he asks. Many countries have announced ambitious plans to eradicate the internal combustion engine and compel new car buyers to go all-electric. The UK will be the fifth European lemming to rush to the cliff and ban new petrol or diesel cars. France had proposed the same thing a few weeks beforehand. Meanwhile, Norway and the Netherlands plan to achieve this by 2025. Germany wants to do away with 100% internal combustion-powered vehicles by 2030, as does India. Rather than pour scorn on the absurdity of the transport proposal — an uncosted plan on a lithium technology that is unproven and based on speculation over who’ll want electric cars anyway — the international press has swallowed these declarations of intent whole. “The common perception is that

EVs will decimate the market for lead although the reality is that EVs continue to use lead auxiliary batteries,” says Ahmed. “The key questions about EVs are: how much demand will be offset by their use of smaller lead batteries, and their rate of market penetration especially when growing EV numbers make subsidies less sustainable?” The adoption of 48V systems offers the prospect of improving efficiency and performance to meet regulators’ imperatives for reduced environmental impact from motor vehicles, says Ahmed. And while lead-acid can fulfil this potential, the industry needs to convince automakers that it can compete with lithium-ion. “Bipolar lead batteries could tip the balance in lead’s favour if recent developments come to fruition for mass market production, rivalling Li-ion in performance and winning in terms of recyclability and lifetime cost of ownership,” he says. Only the latest and best technology will be essential for lead to compete for market share in the fastest growing battery sector: industrial batteries. “Huge increases in global energy storage capacity will be required to meet impressive programmes for additional renewable power generation. The crucial question for lead is: can genuinely persuasive arguments that lead is best, win over negative sentiment and stop Li-ion eating the lion’s share of this feast of new business?” Ahmed says. Part of lead’s advantage for some sectors, he reckons, is the regional adoption of start-stop technology adoption. Interestingly, Ahmed’s presentation

follows a highly successful talk he gave at the Battery Council International conference in May in the US. In this he argued persuasively that the threat from alternative energy storage chemistries — most particularly lithium, of course — is both real but can be countered. “Lead batteries are an easy target as no politician will stand up in public to defend this industry — that would be a vote loser. Take the proposed Garcia legislation in California. The kindest thing you could say about it was that it was… misguided, and came too close for comfort,” he said. But, he continued, clearly legislators aren’t always strangers to logic and can be reasoned with. The Lead-Acid Battery Recycling Act, better known as AB2153, is an excellent example of how, under cohesive leadership of associations such as the BCI and ILA, the whole industry can reach solutions which would have been impossible for individual companies. “The same is true for the European End-of-Life Vehicle directive, which continues to grant only a temporary exemption from lead being banned completely for use in cars, including for the battery,” Ahmed said. “Again, a well reasoned, compelling argument put forward by a consortium led by the ILA and supported by the industry is showing positive signs that we will get continued exemption, with the next review not until 2021 — which is indeed a good result. “An adversarial approach is less effective than gentle persuasion and reasoned argument. Regulatory pressure is here to stay and we need to understand how to best work the system.”

He is the leader of the WG3 working group of the IEC Technical Committee 21 that is responsible for formulating standards for stationary and motive power lead– acid batteries. In this capacity, Giess has guided the establishment of the IEC International Standards 61427-1 and 61427-2 that stipulate the general requirements and methods of test for secondary batteries for renewable energy storage in off-grid and on-grid applications, respectfully. Herbert is also an independent consultant for lead-acid battery research, testing and customer support activities. In his presentation, entitled IEC 61427-2: a standard for evaluating batteries for grid-connected energy storage duties, he will discuss the increasing amounts of renewable energy that are being fed from wind

and solar farms into the power grid, which makes it increasingly necessary to manage properly this influx so to maximize the energy harvesting and minimize disturbances to the frequency of the AC power transmission grid. He says that batteries are the prime candidates to store such energy efficiently and subsequently deliver it to the grid with an extremely fast response time and a minimum of induced frequency instabilities. In addition, batteries are also suitable for the management of peak power demands in industries and transportation networks and thereby will avoid high demand charge penalties and the necessary short-term start-up of power generation equipment that operates with fossil fuels. “The talk does address a worldwide issue of standardising tests for comparing electrochemical energy storage system batteries. As Asia is now gearing up to install more and more of such systems, a common test yardstick is highly desirable. The standard iEC 61427-2 can provide, if properly adhered to, proper comparison data,” Giess says. “The standard is battery chemistry agnostic ie you can finally compare the technical performance of leadacid, lithium ion, flow batteries, high temperature NaS batteries and the like.” While several battery chemistries are commercially available to perform such storage duty, next to local

electricity tariffs, the success of battery energy storage also depends on the electrical performance and service endurance of the battery. A sound comparison between battery chemistries and designs offered in the market has, however, been hampered by the absence of a methodology to evaluate the candidates in a fair and efficient manner. He will explain in this presentation how IEC International Standards will allow battery systems to be compared and tested on a like for like basis. The presentation will describe the basic procedures for this testing and give examples of test data obtained with lead-acid batteries for selected application scenarios.

The talk will address the technological routes to the manufacture of alternative grids, the stability of the used materials during battery operation, and the observed impact on both the characteristic parameters of the current-collector and the performance of the battery. Special attention is paid to bipolar lead acid batteries, where the technological challenges are exceptionally demanding. The presentation will have particular relevance to the Asian battery markets because while the region, he says, sits at the cutting edge of battery technology,

the life of many batteries is shorter because of the warmer climate. is very attractive. However, there are Asian countries with lower income of the population where the Capex aspects of the energy storage is crucial. In this case the alternative current collectors may bring cheaper lead-acid batteries throughout lead savings and partial replacement of the metallic lead with cheaper materials.” While the use of current collectors is nothing new, there are wider implications for the industry as improvements are made to the technology. “State of the art current collectors for pasted and tubular plates for leadacid batteries were first introduced more than a century ago. But since than these concepts are just refined technically,” he says. “My presentation will try to give an understanding how different R&D teams tried to go out of the box in terms of alternative current currant collectors during the last 15-20 years using new materials and concepts which may boost different aspects of the lead-acid battery electrochemistry — as well as to propose where to go and what to do from now.”

FEELING THE STRAIN – AN UPDATE ON THE PRICE OF LEAD

Neil Hawkes, lead analyst at CRU International, is using the working title “Feeling the strain – gauging the impact of tighter feed on refined lead production” for his ABC presentation, designed to cover trends and issues in the global lead market. Hawkes will track the dynamics that have moved the price of lead over the past 12 months explaining the peaks and troughs and the

underlying dynamics underpinning the industry in the process. He will highlight key developments in global lead production and provide some insight into how the future path of production might impact the future direction of lead prices. The slow but steady rise in lead prices since last summer took a dramatic turn in late 2016, with values leaping upwards to hit five-year highs, before inevitably retreating in the first half of 2017, Hawkes says. But he says this should not distract from other trends. “This lead price spike should not, however, distract from the underlying improvement underway from not only broader metal price drivers; but also improvements in lead’s own industry fundamentals,” Hawkes says. One key factor that will continue to drive lead prices in the late 2010s will

be the more erratic path of primary lead production. “Worldwide, tighter lead concentrate (mine) availability is starting to restrain the ability of primary smelters to fill fully the gap between lead demand and secondary lead supplies,” Hawkes says. “However, the scale of the shortfall in primary lead supplies will be diluted by the importance of secondary supplies that will continue to steadily rise. Everywhere, the main issue in lead recycling continues to be the fight between smelters for a share of the available scrap pool. “On the primary supply side, all eyes are now on the response of polymetallic mines (typically producing lead alongside zinc and silver) to higher metal prices and lower treatment charges.”

Online battery management systems have been improved, KD Merz, Abertax KD Merz, vice president of technology and a member of the executive board at Abertax Technologies, will present a paper entitled ‘Online Battery Monitoring for any Battery Chemistry and Application’. He will detail advances made in the development of an online battery management system developed to provide necessary battery data via the internet in real time and in a manner that ensures a quality service when leasing and renting batteries for motive power applications. Merz says the development of such a system is much needed by parts of

the industry. “Battery monitoring and management has become more important for motive power and stand by applications alike. As service costs are increasing, the requirement has emerged for a reliable and wireless system to control the operation conditions and battery performance,” he says. “Such a system can prevent premature failure of batteries, increase the reliability of the battery operation are essential for any leasing or rental arrangements for batteries.” The acceptance of battery management systems are also supported by lithium batteries, as they have a greater requirement for BMS. “A BMS will become a common component for batteries as it improves the quality and safety of battery operation and saves cost in the end,” he says. Because of field experience, the integration of new features and an improved reporting system, the product has been enhanced for use in

A BREAKTHROUGH IN DYNAMIC CHARGE-ACCEPTANCE Stuart McKenzie, the chief executive of ArcActive, will present on the development by ArcActive of a carbon fibre based, negative electrode that has both very high dynamic charge-acceptance (DCA) and low water consumption. While auto manufacturers are demanding higher levels of DCA to improve the fuel economy of their cars, this must be achieved without accelerating any deleterious effects, such as water consumption. “This particular feature has posed a real challenge to the industry as the addition of fine carbon particles to improve DCA often comes at the expense of heightened water consumption,” says McKenzie. The issue is so important that some in the industry are forecasting that the market share of lead acid battery will drop to only a 20% market share (automotive) if the DCA problem is not resolved.” Batteries with ArcActive negatives have been through a full range of 12V automotive battery tests with excellent results. “While ArcActive electrodes require a novel pasting process for mass production, they can otherwise be manufactured on existing production lines. After a lengthy development

process, ArcActive is now poised for market entry,” he says. McKenzie says that this breakthrough by ArcActive is relevant to Asia because of the rapid growth of stop-start technology in so many markets. “With big growth expected in China, and Japan already significant — the move to micro-hybrids is global,” he says. “The big implication for the industry is that our technology will create winners and losers within the industry. It’s highly likely that OEM and aftermarket customers will head to this technology. It will also probably find applications outside of automotive ones.”

Daramic: Our start-stop future A presentation by executives from Daramic including Joerg Deiters, who is the global technical service director at the firm, will focus on start-stop and enhanced flooded batteries (EFB), says Dawn Heng, global strategic marketing director, Daramic. “This is a hot topic in Asian market today. It began in Europe and was quickly adopted in Japan, but now we are seeing a potential boom in other key Asia markets, including China, Korea and other countries,” Heng says. Daramic has worked with major automotive OEMs in Europe and Asia to understand the needs, trends and the challenges in start-stop/EFB applications. “Especially for EFB, with the advantage of endurance at high temperature and a relatively lower cost structure versus AGM, the company has been able to make an early penetration in this market sector,” Heng says.

In a paper entitled Design Possibilities When Using LifeMat Pasting Mat in the Production of Lead Acid Batteries, he will explain that, for decades, glass non-woven veils have needed to be used to prevent the shedding of positive active mass during the cycling of lead acid batteries. And throughout the world, the veils are included in the production of start-stop batteries. But additional testing and experience has shown that there are more benefits to be realized when employing the LifeMat glass non-woven pasting veils

developed by Owens Corning. The presentation demonstrates that there are also ways for regular SLI batteries to take advantage of the benefits offered my LifeMat technology. “Due to the very strong bonding of the glass veil to the active lead paste, the ‘running-in’ period of a battery is vastly shortened and the performance is stable from the first few cycles onwards,” Boghe says. “By contrast, a conventional (nonreinforced) battery will lose some performance during the early stages of cycling. Our findings suggest that the use of LifeMat technology may enable battery manufacturers to reduce cost

by lowering the amount of lead paste, or to extend the warranty period.” Boghe says his presentation will be relevant to the Asian markets because it is fast growing and the battery manufacturing equipment being used is new enough to allow the integration of this technology. “Asia is a fast growing market for SLI batteries and it’s our assessment this will continue to be like this for some time. The production equipment available is in general very recent, allowing the use/integration of products like our glass pasting mat. “Additionally, given the harsh climate conditions, there is an opportunity to improve the lifetime of standard SLI batteries and our product can help in this,” Boghe says. There could be other benefits for the wider industry. “If one can reduce the amount of lead needed to make a battery we can reduce the overall consumption of lead. Similarly if battery life can be extended this makes this industry even more competitive,” he says.
