MAWJ SAF BOUTIQUE HOTEL SPRING 2019 | PRO F. CAMILO CERRO | IN COLLABORATION WITH HIBA ELIDRISI INSPIRED BY THE MOVEMENT OF WATER AND ITS MANY FORMS, THIS BOUTIQUE HOTEL FOCUSES ON HAVING DIFFERENT INSTALLATIONS THAT ARE HIDDEN INSIDE T HE TRADITIONAL EMARATI ARCHITECTURE OF THE SAF. THIS THRESHOLD BETWEEN THE TRADITIONAL AND INTERVENTION HAPPENS THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT AT SEVERAL SCALES. ULTIMATELY, THIS INTERVENTION PLAYS A ROLE IN NOURISHING THE VISITOR IN THE MIDST OF A DESERT.

SPRING 2019 | PROF DANIEL CHAVEZ |IN COLLABORATION WITH GRADUATING IDE STUDENTS THE PROJECT EXPLORES THE IDEA OF MOVING THROUGH A FOREST OF MATERIALS. BEING ASSIGNED THE TASK OF DESIGNING A MATERIALS’ LIBRARY FOR CAAD STUDENTS, THIS PROJECT STRAYED AWAY FROM THE TYPICAL SHELVING SYSTEMS OF LIBRAR IES AND FOCUSED ON EXPLORING NEW WAYS OF DISPLAYING MATERIAL SAMPLES. THIS MATERIALS LIBRARY’S METHOD OF CATALOGUING IS INTUITIVE AS IT IS BASED ON THE VISUALS RATHER THAN THE TYPICAL CATALOGUING METHODS.

P AS TA FA C T O RY PASTA FACTORY & RESTAURANT SPRING 2018 | PRO F. AMMAR KALO THE PROJECT EXPLORES THE CONCEPT OF HAVING A FIELD OF TWO SYSTEMS THAT WORK TOGETHER TO SERVE THE FUNCTIONS OF A PASTA FACTORY. THE AESTHETI C ASPECT IS INSPIRED BY THE JUNYA ICHIGAMI’S UNCONVENTIONAL WAYS OF REPRESENTING SPACES. ALSO, VARIOUS ATMOSPHERES WERE EMPHASIZED BY THE INTERPLAY OF TERAZZO’S COLOR AND GRAIN SIZE.

JASON CARLOW THE PROJECT PURSUES THE GOLD LEAF OF THE EUROPEAN PAINTER “GUSTAV KLIMT”, AND USES IT AS A REFERENCE FOR THE VISUALLY RICH COLOR & TEXTURE OF THE SPACE. THE RHYTHM OF THE MOVABLE ELEMENTS IN THE GROUND FLOOR WAS INSPIRED BY CARLO SCARPA’S WORK THAT IS RENOWNED FOR ITS HIERARCHICAL COMPOSITIONS & RICHNESS OF MATERIALITY.

WORKSHOP SPRING 2019 | IN COLLABORAITON WITH MEALBUILD: AA VISITING SCHOOL IN DUBAI BLOC 84 IS A SHADING STRUCTURE MADE UP OF 84 UNIQUE MODULES. IT INTRODUCES AN INNOVATIVE CONSTRUCTION METHOD USING 3D PRINTED INTERLOCKING PIECES, CREATING A LARGER SELF-STANDING STRUCTURE. THE FABRICATION PROCESS OF THIS PROJECT UTILIZES 3D PRINTING. IT IS BOTH ADDITIVE AND STEREOTOMIC. BLOC 84 DESIGN ENSURES THAT EACH MODULE INTERLOCKS WITH ONE ANOTHER, THE PIECES REMAIN DRY FIT THUS MAKING THE ENTIRE STRUCTURE MOBILE AND EFFICIENT IN TERMS OF TRANSPORTATION AND ASSEMBLY. BLOCK 84 IS PART OF A POTENTIALLY LARGER NETWORK OF SMALL POCKETS OF RESPITE LOCATED ACROSS DUBAI TO ACCOMMODATE THE PEDESTRIANS OF THE CITY.

SPRING 2019 | PRO F JUAN ROLDAN THE 500TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDATION OF THE CHÂTEAU DE CHAMBORD IN FRANCE, WIDELY BELIEVED TO BE INFLUENCED BY LEONARDO DA VINCI, WAS THE CATALYST FOR THIS PROJECT BY ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS IN THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF SHARJAH’S COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, ART AND DESIGN (CAAD). EXAMINING THE RENAISSANCE GEM IN THE CONTEXT OF ITS UTOPIAN WORLDVIEW, THE STUDENTS’ PROPOSAL, ENTITLED ECOTOPOS, IMAGINES A NEW KIND OF UTOPIA THAT CONSIDERS THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECOLOGICAL CHALLENGES WE FACE TODAY. THE YOUNG ARCHITECTS’ INTRIGUING AND AT TIMES MYSTERIOUS DRAWINGS, MODELS, AND VIDEOS ARE COMPLEMENTED BY AN EQUALLY COMPELLING ESSAY, HINGING UTOPIAN YEARNING TO A DYSTOPIAN CALAMITY.

R ETHI N K I N G R E D, B L U E & E VE R T H IN G I N BET WEEN COMPETITION ENTRY FALL 2018 | IN COLLABORATION WITH REEM EL WAZEER AND HABIBA KHALIFA THE PROJECT ADDRESSES THE CHALLENGE PEOPLE FACE IN A FAST PACED WORLD WHEN THEY WANT TO TAKE A QUICK SHOWER WHILE ALSO MAINTAINING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. A THRESHOLD IS ESTABLISHED BY CREATING TWO VERTICAL PLANES THAT CONTROL THE TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE OF THE W ATER. THE GLASS PLANE HAS THE CONTROL PANEL WHILE THE STONE PLANE HAS SEAMLESS PERFORATIONS THAT ARE PLACED ACCORDING TO THE HUMAN BODY (SPARSE VS. DENSE). THE ENERGY OF THE STEAM COMING FROM THE SHOWER WATER IS BEING USED TO CONTROL THE TEMPERAT URE OF THE GROUND BETWEEN THE PLANES. THE RADIANT FLOORING SYSTEM WILL ENSURE THE COMFORT OF PEOPLE WHILE CHANGING THE TEMPERATURE AS THE MOST BODY HEAT EXCHANGE HAPPENS AT THE FEET.

ARCHITE CT U RE I N J AP AN GALLERY PANEL SUMMER 2017 | PROF IGOR PERAZA AN EXHIBITION OF WORK DONE BY STUDENTS FROM THE COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, ART AND DESIGN (CAAD) AT AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF SHARJAH (AUS) AS PART OF THE COLLEGE’S FIRST SUMMER STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM IN JAPAN WAS ON DISPLAY IN THE CAAD ATRIUM. THE WONDERFUL DISPLAY INCLUDED VIDEOS, PHOTOGRAPHS, DRAWINGS, SKETCHES AND ARTIFACTS INSTALLED IN INDIVIDUAL PANELS REPRESENTING THE EXPERIENCE OF EACH STUDENT WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM AND THEIR INTERPRETATION OF JAPANESE CULTURE AND TRADITIONS.
