Our Nation’s Best Offense BEYA 365:

BEYA and STEM City USA support the professional and personal growth of people of color in every area of their lives, every day of their lives. Likewise, the prestigious Stars & Stripes Awards Event is one of the nation’s largest programs celebrating the contributions of active and retired Black military men and women from the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Guard, U.S. Space Force, and members of the Senior Executive Service (SES). Our mission is to get more American youth into engineering through our proactive year-round mentoring program connecting flag officers and industry executives with area high school students, because a strong education is our young people’s best offense for success. With the U.S. Navy as this year’s featured service, we continue our honored tradition of having each military service name a recipient of its prestigious Stars & Stripes Award, so our young people can see military leaders who look like them. We also take this opportunity to acknowledge the Top Blacks in the Military, featured in the U.S. Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine.

Welcome to the 17th Annual Black Engineer of the Year (BEYA) Stars and Stripes Awards.

The opportunities for youth in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math have never been greater. The intersection of a strong vision, superior leadership and outstanding volunteers to carry out our BEYA Stars & Stripes mission creates the environment to motivate, encourage and help youth to pursue a science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) education.

The foundation of our efforts begins with Vice Admiral Andy Winns (Ret.) who leads pre-awards mentoring. Over the last 9 years 1057 active-duty Flags, Generals and SES have mentored 6,227 youth prior to our dinner/awards event. This year will be no exception. At 1000 on Friday, February 18, VADM Winns and his team has arranged to mentor 325 students via Zoom. Over 140 Active Flags, Generals and SES personnel have volunteered to mentor in remote mentoring sessions via BEYA STEM City - MetaVerse Digital environment where stakeholders, students, parents, educators, corporations, and government agencies can interact 365/7.

SES Jesse McCurdy (Ret.) leads our year-round mentoring utilizing retired Flags, Generals and SES personnel. Our partners include the top-rated high schools in the nation, according to US News and World Report. We are finding that effort to become even more promising as we and youth learn to explore opportunities and receive mentorship from some of the most accomplished executives in the government.

Finally, our BEYA Stars and Stripes Student ambassadors have taken the lead for our BEYA Career Day. The BEYA Career Day is led by LTG Bruce Crawford (Ret.). Presenters include Steve Poizner, inventor of GPS for mobile devices. The 2021 cohort of 11th grade honor students is handing the baton to the Class of 2022 BEYA Stars and Stripes Student Ambassadors. The 2021 cohort of students has an average GPA of 4.3 and includes National Honor Society members, teen entrepreneurs, and students from the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science.

This year, we are honored to have the United States Navy as our featured service. We are especially proud to have the Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Gilday attend as well as being a keynote speaker for our awards event.

Congratulations to our BEYA Stars and Stripes 2022 Military awardees. You are role models and motivators for our future leaders.

On behalf of Dr. Tyrone Taborn and Career Communications Group, Stars and Stripes Founders, and our military and corporate sponsors, we are most grateful to have your participation. We will make it an impactful experience for you — The BEYA 365 Experience.

Sincerely,

Tyrone D. Taborn Chairman & CEO
