RIDE THE REVOLUTION TRADE SHOW REVIEW By JAMES CHAMPION
A huge thank you must go out to all the dealers who attended our Ride the Revolution trade show in August. Building on the success of last year’s event and taking the lessons learned forward, work began on the show much earlier than the previous year and we hope that it showed in the end result which we believe showcased our products magnificently. There are some absolutely fantastic new products for the 2012 model year, not to mention 2 new brands in Muc-Off and Sugoi. Ride the Revolution was the first chance for dealers and press alike to see these new products and to place orders for the first deliveries. A few facts and figures: • We hosted over 200 dealers at the show throughout the 4 days. • With many dealers bringing more than one person we had over 350 people in total. • Representatives came from 12 different magazines and websites. • 240 bikes were on display.
you can see current due dates, this takes into account any delays in production / shipping.
- Bike Specs: All 2012 bikes have specification grids in their detail view.
The product managers, brand managers and engineers that made time to fly over and speak directly with dealers were a huge hit, as were the riders that came over, Daniel Oss from the Liquigas Cannondale professional road team who came all the way over from Italy and Chris Akrigg from Mongoose who came from a little closer in Yorkshire to name but two.
- Clothing orders made easier: We have
This year there was even more added value for dealers in terms of a dedicated parts and accessories room where they could see in one place, all the latest and greatest and ever expanding range of parts and accessories on offer from CSG UK. There was also the chance to sit down with our B2B website manager and chat through any suggested revisions which will ultimately help us understand more of what you need from the service we provide.

HOWDY y’all... CSG CATCHES UP WITH JIMMY IN THE USA
Jimmy’s woodland retreat, nice eh! Got room for one more?
Interviewed By Mike Cotty
CSGUK bid farewell to talented graphic designer and all round funny guy Jimmy Browning aka whoisthiskid? at the tail end of October, as he went to join the mothership CSG in the USA as their BMX graphics and colour designer. Here we caught up with Jimmy in the US and asked him a few questions a month on since leaving... Q. So, how did the big move go? I have one phrase for this question...Winging it! The first of many funny things I did when I first arrived here was when I had to go fuel up with petrol/GAS! I could not get the pump to work, it was only when a kind lady said I needed to pay first! WHAT?? Pay before you get it? So I did that and then freaked out, what fuel do I put in the hire car? The easy, most stupid way to work this out is to undo the fuel cap and sniff hard.... Just before I almost passed out I knew it was petrol not diesel I needed to put in! Q. What’s life like for Jimmy Browning now? It’s certainly a massive change, everything is new, big and a lil’ bit scary, but I dig that. I have started living the dream, I am a proper woodsman, I have grown a massive beard, I live in a little cottage in the woods, I chop wood for the fire, working on getting a ratty pick-up as we speak and a gun to follow. Just had a pretty bad snow storm which was pretty scary with trees
coming down, just missing the cottage! I still don’t have power 9 days later, I carved this into a piece of bark! Been partying all over too, so far have spent some time rocking out in Miami, New York, Connecticut and Boston and yes, American women do love English accents, especially Dorset ones, they call it Dirty English! Q. How’s your American coming on? Ha! my American is bad, nobody understands me, all I have learnt so far is ‘Yo, homie’, from my first mate from Brooklyn! I refuse to start speaking American/backwards, ha! I am just going to be patient and continue to teach the Americans true English, well true Dorset Pirate English! Arrrrrrrr! Q. What’s your first project? My first project was to re-do a handful of the colour and graphics on the Mongoose 2013 BMX range, as well as the Mongoose Fireballs, to make them Sick to the Rad within a short amount of time (approx. 2 weeks) as they were already behind on this, waiting for my visa and getting me over the pond. It was super tough to do this in such a sort time scale, whist learning at the same time the way they work here and how the graphics should be artworked for production. As an experienced graphic designer, this was no shock, it’s a huge part of your job meeting deadlines on time, so I was confident I would be able to it and maintain a high standard, which will really push the brand forward in the BMX market. There was a lot of beer drinking done after those first two weeks!!
Q. When will we get to see your work in production? I will first see prototypes in January, when I go to visit the factories in China and Taiwan for two weeks, which will be where I will be spending my 26th birthday (could be dangerous!) I will have to import some Monster Munch, so I wont have to eat lizards on a stick! I’m guessing you guys will see them summer time. Q. Any big graphic plans you can let us in on? Yep... Q. And finally, have yo been arrested yet? Arrested, no, not yet...Although there’ve been a couple of short car chases and a note from the Bethel State Police saying I need to call them, so will keep you posted on that one! Fingers crossed...

SPOTLIGHT ON CANNONDALE - 29’ER
GALLAGHER WAS RIGHT, ‘YOU GOTTA ROLL WITH IT’ CANNONDALE.COM No longer confined to the fringes of the mountain bike world, 29’ers are fast becoming the norm. Roots, rocks, ruts, you name it. 29” wheels roll right over obstacles, increasing stability, improving traction and offering a more comfortable ride in the process. Amazingly, contrary to what you may have led yourself to believe, those extra few inches do make all the difference. 2012 marks a revolution in our vastly expanded 29’er range, now with thirteen models across three segments (including full suspension, carbon hardtail and alloy hardtail) & something for just about every riding preference & budget. To set things rollin’, starting at £599.99, is the TrailSL 29’er Singlespeed. With it’s optimised 6061 alloy frame with Fatty rigid fork and all the benefits of a big wheel bike with the simplicity, low maintenance and lightweight of a singlespeed. Perfect for those looking to try a 29’er and a pretty handy commuter to boot!
Stepping up a level is our Flash 29’er Alloy range (prices from £1,399.99) with race oriented geometry, shorter chainstays, lower BB and a touch steeper head angle designed to replicate the sharp handling, liveliness and incredible power transfer of their 26” counterparts. Hands down the lightest, stiffest and smoothest riding 29’er hardtail frame ever made, the Flash Carbon’s BalisTec ultra high-strength fibres, developed for military ballistic armouring, and impact-resistant resins actually make it lighter and stiffer than aluminium and pound for pound stronger than steel. If you’re looking for the ultimate 29’er race bike then look no further. And now, introducing the all new Scalpel 29’er. 100mm of super-light, rock ‘n’ rollin’, big wheeled goodness. With elements from our Flash 29’er, Scalpel, RZ and Over-Mountain bikes we’ve designed, tested and perfected a full suspension 29’er specific chassis designed to address the three biggest issues that plague most 29‘ers - Weight. Stiffness. Handling.
At a scant 1,850g, the new Scalpel 29’er Carbon is the lightest 29’er dual suspension frame on the market (by a considerable margin). Combined with the additional weight savings possible with System Integration of the Lefty fork, OPI stem and Hollowgram SL chainset, simply put ‘it’s party time!’ BallisTec carbon construction and ECS-TC (Enhanced Centre Stiffness-Torsion Control) system borrowed from our Over-Mountain bikes ensure that the responsive feel and immediate power delivery is right on queue when you stamp on the pedals. Through performance-driven engineering, the Scalpel 29’er has geometry and trail manners that mimic the stable-but-nimble feel of our Flash Carbon hardtails, not an easy task when you’re adding 100mm of travel. Scalpel 29’er Alloy from £1,799.99. Scalpel 29’er Carbon from 3,699.99. Don’t ride against it.....roll with it. Learn more about Cannondale 29’er technology at...

SPOTLIGHT ON CHARGE NEW FOR 2012 2012 has been a successful year thus far thanks to a much more focused product range and better price points. We have introduced the steel 29” Cooker MTB range as well as a titanium version frameset that has received an excellent review in MBUK November issue. We also hotly anticipate delivery of our new Scourer & Zester urban 700c bikes, these are a great alternative to the stuffy, purposeful commuter hybrid by adding a bit of zest. Wide bars, fast 32c tyres and smack on gearing make these two models a refreshing change to the dull, trudging norm of the daily commute. Of course we haven’t forgotten the essentials, rack and mud guard compatibility was top of the list when we were drafting these up. Following the success of the Filter bikes in 2011 we have added a key price point model for 2012, the Filter Hi comes equipped with 10 speed Tiagra, Tektro Lyra CX disc brakes and fully sealed road disc hubs all for the handsome sum of £999.99... it has been one of the most requested models for magazine review so far and we expect this bike to be one of our best selling for the model year.
COOKER We’ve worked hard to bring you the most spritely feeling steel 29er frame out there. Its carefully selected tubeset provides the ultimate combination of strength, weight and comfort yet responsive ride characteristics. Based around a 100 to 120 mm travel suspension fork the new Cooker’s unique geometry dispels any rumours that 29ers are unwieldy and boatlike in their technical handling. Quite the opposite in fact.

SPOTLIGHT ON CHARGE BRAND NEW FOR 2012 ARE OUR FIRST ALUMINIUM URBAN COMMUTERS The all new Scourer and Zester are our take on the fast 700c urban commuter bike. Classic looking circular-tubed, double-butted alloy frames with compact geometry form the basis for these great value disc braked, derallieur-geared urban bikes. Alloy frames are a departure from the norm for Charge, but used in this way they fit the brand ethos and enable us to explore a market that we see growing very rapidly - Modern lightweight classics.

FILTER HI The Tange Prestige butted steel-framed filter is based around our titanium cyclo-cross machine, the Freezer. We’ve adjusted the geometry slightly so it’s a little more relaxed, you can also fit full length mudguards and pannier racks making it the perfect commuter. Make no mistake though the Filter is ready to race too, plenty of mud clearance and cables routed on top of the top tube make it ready to compete on the race track as well as the route to work, now complete with disc brakes on the Hi and Apex models.

SPOTLIGHT ON GT Riders who plan to spend long hours in the saddle don’t want some mind numbing, super stiff XC race bike. GT trail bikes are built with this in mind, giving riders who want to spend an entire day (and perhaps part of the night, too) on their bikes a ride that won’t make them want to call Mummy. And because it’s a GT, reliability and durability go without saying. Which is a pleasant thought, if you’ve been carving single track for three plus hours…and find yourself some three plus hours from your car. The GT Avalanche has an all new frame for 2012! With new hydroformed tubing, triple butting and integrated cable routing, not only does that make it lighter by 200gs it looks super clean! At £649.99 the Avalanche 2.0 second in command in the Avalanche range, behind the flagship £799.99 Avalanche 1.0. With a RockShox fork, Shimano finishing kit and svelt frame this bike is not only great value, but looks super cool in blue and white for 2012!

MARKETING HIGHLIGHTS It’s impossible to deny that there is a real buzz in the market for our latest and greatest 2012 product. Winning ‘Bike Distributor of the Year’ at the prestigious Bike Biz industry awards ceremony at the end of September was a particular honour and testament to the hard work that all of the team here at Cycling Sports Group have endured to continually improve the service that we are able to offer to our retailers (the best in the world we hasten to add!)
Cycling Sports Group won ‘Bike Distributor of the Year’ at the prestigious Bike Biz industry awards
With its sub 700g frame and engineered to provide the best stiffness to weight ratio ever recorded, the Cannondale EVO continues to not only turn heads but provide permanent neck ache to all that strain to get a longer glance at it as it speeds past. Unanimously voted for by a select group of industry experts, the EVO won the Eurobike GOLD award for technology, innovation and value for money whilst Bicycle Buyer editor, David Hopkins, was blown away by the ride saying “the Evo is hands down the best bike I’ve ever ridden. So comfy, swift and laughably light. I’d defy anyone to buy anything else once they’ve ridden it”.

SUPERSIX EVO
EFFICIENCY EVOLVED. Head to head in MBUK’s £1,000 full suspension shootout the Mongoose Salvo came away as the worthy winner offering a capable ride and great value for money. The new 120mm Slayton has had a positive early outing with the boys from MBR magazine, acknowledging it as a bike that “impressed us across the board”. GT’s hardtail line, including Zaskar and Karakoram, continue to excite with the Zaskar Expert quoted by MBUK magazine as being “an education in practicality - get on it, go fast for ages, get off and repeat. It’s absolutely superb”.

THE ZODIAC After we had designed the Zodiac we did wonder if we had just designed one of the most desirable BMX bikes ever. The new graphics compliment the faultless geometry perfectly in a match that was made to be. You are truly spoilt for choice with the Zodiac; a fully crmo frame with built in chain tensioner and butted/ tapered down tubes, wethepeople tires, the new extra wide nylon/fiberglass éclat “Plaza” pedals, the classic éclat pivotal “Gonzo” seat, and a pair of éclat “Trippin” double wall rim on the front and rear. Oh and if that isn’t enough to make your jaw drop, the Zodiac comes complete with a saltplus LSD/RSD switch cassette hub, a built-in cast cromo seat clamp and a saltplus “Manta” full CNC alloy sprocket. Just in case you thought that was your lot, we forgot to mention that the Zodiac comes with the new SaltPlus investment cast dropout fork called “The Magic” and a 16 spline saltplus 3pc crank set, this is truly an unbeatable bike set up.

THE JUSTICE The Justice 20.5” and 21” make a lasting impression. Outstanding elegance is the hallmark of its distinctive appearance while the flawless black design perfectly expresses their treacherous souls. Including design features from our pro-level bikes, the Justice is one of the most desired bikes in our collection, and if you thought it looked good last year then watch out for 2012. The Justice 20.5” and 21” both have a different handlebar raise on each and both have a tapered top tube with a 35mm outer diameter at the head tube and a 33mm at the seat tube, this in essence makes the top tube super strong and is the first complete bike of its kind with a tapered top tube. Both versions come with crmo down tubes, top tubes and chain stays. They also include 25t/9t gearing, WTP “Justice” pivotal seat, éclat “Surge” nylon/fiberglass pedals, fully sealed bearing cassette hub and a look to die for. The Justice is precisely what you need in order to ride precisely everything!

JASON PHELAN
catch up with My favoUrite Irish BMXer, Jason Phelan. Interviewed By Chester - WTP Chester from WETHEPEOPLE caught up with Irish BMX’er Jason Phelan to talk about his new signature frame, the party scene in Liverpool and if the world will end next year... Q. What’s up Jason? How you holding up after that wild crash? I’m doing good just trying to take it easy for a bit, but its hard as im trying to film a good section at the same time. No rest for the wicked.
Jason’s new signature frame ‘The Irish’, also see page 30...
Q. You working in any projects at the moment?
Jason’s neckbrace after that wild crash...
Q. How’s the BMX/Party scene in Liverpool these days? Still crazy as ever? To be honest I havent been here much this year and I’ve calmed down quite a bit but i dont think it’s what it used to be, I still do have the odd crazy night out tho. Q. Your new signature frame is sick! Can you tell us about it? Yeah it is sick! I love it! Its just the type of frame I like to ride. Nice and high, so its easier for barspins and the short backend is good for spinning. As Van Homan said about his frame, I can pretty much say the same “its not a scooter.” Its also the strongest frame I’ve had in years and i have deffo put it to the test this year as i have been filming non stop. Its just one frecken good bmx “extreme” frame for extreme people like Joe Bailey (The most extreme person i know) I’m also real happy about the stickers! I got an Irish friend that i grew up riding with to do the design (danleodesign.com) so he knew what I was into. I’m real happy he was apart of it and now i just cant wait to see what people think.
I feel like you’re all over the place. You’re right i am all over the place this year. It’s been great! Right now i’m just finishing up filming for the Props Owned DVD which should be out by Christmas. I’ve been to so many countries this year, from road trips around Europe to contests in America. I also did an Irish road trip a few weeks back, the video should be online any day now. Q. How was your summer? So good just been to so many places hung around with so many good people, what a way to live! Q. Name 5 things you always travel with? 1: Hair straighteners 2: Nail clippers 3: 2 liter bottle of water 4: A dog 5: My lucky charms Q. Do you believe the world is gonna end in November of next year? I hope not then no one will see my Owned section, and me getting first at the Worlds next year. Q. You still drinking river-view’s finest? HAHA! I haven’t touched that stuff in so long! For you guys who want to party on the cheap, this is the wine for you.
Q. Any shout outs or things you want people to check out? Just thanks to everyone who is supporting me and helping me out so I can do what i love and making a 25 year old child’s dream come true! Like lets be honest no one wants to walk around without wearing Nike 6.0. And i certainly dont want to fall on my knees without wearing Fuse pads. And if i was you i would just be bloody embarrassed if i wasn’t riding down the road on an IRISH WeThePeople frame.
CHARGE BIKES INfILITRATE NYC THE CONRAN SHOP COLLABORATION Over the past sixty years, designer Sir Terence Conran has contributed to the way we live, eat and shop. He is one of the world’s best known designers, retailers & restuaranteurs. The new Conran X Charge Bikes Hob and Plug models are simple, practical, low maintenance, and affordable. With a classic steel frame and 3 speed Sturmey Archer internally hubbed gears the ladies and mens bikes are design classics with an understated yet contemporary style. Fitted with Charge’s multi-award winning saddles and with an upright riding position, the bikes are not only comfortable but practical and allow great control and visibility in urban environments...
For One Day Only. To celebrate the launch of the collaboration with the Conran shop, Charge have been invited to release their 2012 range in a number of Conran shops globally. This began with a product preview day in Conran’s flagship store in the amazing Michelin building in Chelsea, London and it was later displayed in the NYC shop Broadway, Manhattan. Bicycles are displayed in store, around and on furniture throughout the store to great effect. The juxtaposition of the bicycles and furniture creates an intriguing display for both the invited press and public alike.

NEW WEBSITE Bang! New model year, new bikes and an all-new fresh website. Packed full of news, features and videos, the new Charge website is designed with the purpose of bringing back visitors again and again, maximising their exposure to the brand and its ethos.
CHARGE ‘12’ AT EUROBIKE September hails the annaul Eurobike show and as every year Charge were there in full force with yet another show-stopping booth. For Eurobike 2011 the Charge team re-cycled, pun intended, the 2010 merry go round stand but with a twist. With traditional British royal coat of arms crests, union jack flags and blue, white and red colour scheme the brand were in no way trying to conseal their heritage. Couple the 2012 ‘designed in GB’ decal present on every bike with punnets of strawberries and cream and you had what seemed like a home-from-home.
The royal Charge crest
2012 marks a new era for Charge, more focused product and keener price points were top of the agenda for the expanded Charge team. For the past few years, Charge has been at the forefront of the fixed bike scene and whilst still maintaining a firm grip on the singlespeed sector they are clearly looking to broaden their offerings in other areas where they are strong.
Urban: For 2012 Charge break the mould and venture, with the Scourer and Zester models, into aluminium 700c. With 32c tyres, wide bars and compact gearing, Charge are looking too accomodate the commuter that prefers a fun and more aggressive ride position. In fact, CyclingPlus said of the Zester “A quirky, individual ‘commuter’ bike that should have widespread appeal”. Also, Charge have expanded upon the successful Filter range by adding an additional model, the Filter Hi. With the usual high quality Tange Infinity tubing, cable disc brakes and new Tiagra 10 speed groupset, all for £999.99, this bike is set to be one of our best sellers. Mountain: 2012 has seen Charge embrace the 29 inch wheel invasion with a brand new range of MTBs... The Cooker. The Charge crew worked hard to combat the boatlike handling that most 29ers seem to suffer by developing their own unique geometry. High bottom brackets and steep head angles keep the bike turning and riding more like a 26er in what we feel is the best riding 29er out there. Indeed, check out some sterling press in the not so distant future.
This is done in a number of ways. 1. By regularly updating the news section with fun and informative posts about the brand, its products, riders and events. 2. By incorporating regular photo features on products, people and races. 3. With new videos promoted every other month, produced by some of the most talented film makers in the industry. 4. The team’s blog. Not only is the news section updated constantly, but each of the team riders has their own blog which feeds into the team page so visitors can keep up to date on what all their favourite riders have been up to. 5. The “My Bike” section of the website where Charge owners can upload images and info about their bikes and see other people’s machines, there are now almost 400 bikes on the “My Bike” register, with new ones popping up every day. Not only is the fantastic content there to draw in consumers but the rest of the website has been given a revamp too.It now features a cleaner, fresher look in line with the new graphics featuring on the bikes. Facebook and Twitter accounts have been incorporated into the site with the added integration of a tweet button and a Facebook ‘like’ button so Charge fans can share the products they like with their friends through those websites. Finally, the navigation has also been vastly improved to make it easier to find specific products quickly.

WHITE & BOWERS PODIUM AT 24HR SOLO CHAMPS! Congratulations to Ant White and Hannah Bowers who took second and third respectively in the 24 Hours of Exposure Championship race earlier in the year whilst Mike Cotty placed 5th overall in the Elite category in the season long Southern XC mountain bike series. SCOTTISH NATIONAL CHAMPION... DAVE HENDERSON RETAINS XC TITLE By James Champion
Dave Henderson has retained his Scottish National XC Champions title in a hard fought race at Drumlanrig castle. Congratulations Dave, a well deserved result. “The iconic venue of Drumlanrig castle hosted this September 4th’s Scottish XC Mountain Bike Championships. Drumlanrig is famous for its slippy roots and is favoured by many riders as a true XC mountain bike course. With heavy rain during the week the Saturday pre-ride with team mate Gareth was soggy to say the the least. However, by race day the course was drying out although still plenty to catch you out! After a good warm up I made my way to the start line. I took the lead early on with
Grant Ferguson and Rab Wardell coming with me. Going into the 2nd lap it was just Grant and I. In the 3rd lap , Grant opened up a slight gap and I fought to get back up onto his wheel and we were back together for the 4th lap before the attacks started in the 5th. I managed to get away towards the end of last lap and held on to take the Scottish Champs title 2011! Grant gave me a great race after just getting back from achieving a 4th in the World Champs at Champery on the Thursday. Team mate Gareth finished 4th in his first race back after breaking his collar bone. Successfully defending the title was a goal for me in 2011 and means a lot to me during what has been a mixed season.”

COBBLE WOBBLE III
World Cup 4X rider takes the crown A couple of months ago we saw the third annual Cobble Wobble take over the centre of Frome, with hundreds of riders signing up to tackle the steep, cobbled 179-yard climb. There was a wealth of talent from right across the cycling field on show. But there could only be one winner, and this year it was World Cup 4X rider Lewis Lacey, who ripped up the cobbles in 22.20 to take the gold bike and bragging rights for the year. Lacey took over a second out of second-place Gareth Montgomery, who finished in 23.36, and he in turn edged out pink-skinsuit-clad Murray Roe, who completed his final run in 23.57.
RedBull Minidrome Glasgow The first of two Redbull minidrome events came back to the UK on 2nd October. The old fruit market in Glasgow was the venue for round 1 where hundreds of spectators were on hand to witness the action live on the smallest velodrome in the world. The Red Bull Mini Drome is engineered by Velotrack, the team who built the velodromes for the Atlanta Olympics and the Delhi Commonwealth Games.
The track measures 25 metres in circumference and is 1.8 meters wide. Congratulations to our winner! Toms Alsberg came all the way from Latvia and in the process broke the world minidrome record with a staggering time of 33.555 seconds over 10 laps, an average lap time of 3.355 seconds (took me a while that one), Obscene!
RedBull Minidrome MANCHESTER The second of the two Redbull minidrome events played host to the third and final round of the UK Mini Drome series. Set in the amazing Victoria Bath Spa, the track was built into the old pool which made for fantastic viewing and hosted by biking legend Chris Akrigg and Chris Fuber coach of the British Paralympics cycling team. 100 competitors battle it out to place in the knockout rounds later that evening, the fastest 10 laps would then go head to head in a dual sprint eliminator, all the favorites were there, Toms, Ricky, Cunny, Chicken along with a host of new brave faces.
It’s exciting to watch riders from all disciplines battle it out on a track that doesn’t favor any of them, BMXers are not used to riding fixed, whilst track riders found riding the steep and narrow banks a challenge. Toms, winner of the previous Glasgow and Poland events was the clear favorite, although in both knockout rounds Ricky and Cunny were leading but it was Toms’ experience that inevitably won him another gold plug. Toms 1st, Ricky 2nd, Janis 3rd. Well done guys see you all next year. Toms Alsberg once again took gold
