W
elcome to the launch of Raising Kids Naturally Magazine. We are so excited to have put together a magazine full of exciting features and lots of information to help you make informed decisions on raising your children naturally. It was not without trials and tribulations, however our burning passion to publish this magazine to help thousands of families kept us moving forward. Raising Kids Naturally magazine, is the Gold Coast’s only publication, 100% focused on “Raising Kids Naturally”! Published monthly, full of expert advice, inspiration, and motivation from our regular contributors to help families raise their kids naturally. The magazine began as a realization that not only my immediate family needed regular advice and guidance on living as naturally as possible, but the community as a whole. Our youngest daughter was diagnosed as a celiac 3 years ago and ever since that initial diagnosis, we have been researching and learning a lot about the way of the world as it is now, the chemicals we use, the vaccinations we give our children, modern medicine verses natural medicine, the more we read the more motivated we became to help educate and spread the word. We started out researching Celiac disease and gluten and found ourselves in a very fortunate position, a position of power and knowledge. ‘We are parents of two beautiful daughters, looking to raise awareness about everyday issues that parents face, focusing on raising children naturally”. We really hope you enjoy reading the magazine as much as we enjoy putting it together for you. Yours in Health and Happiness,

Potatoes save the day If you’ve found yourself with searing hot red skin, root up a few potatoes. Potatoes have been known as a pain reliever throughout the years, working particularly well on minor skin irritations and soothing scratches, bites, and burns, as well as possibly reducing inflammation. Some people feel that the juice of the potato works the best, while others feel just slices are sufficient. Try both, and see which one is the best remedy for your sunburn.
DIRECTIONS Wash and scrub your potatoes thoroughly, and then either grate them over a bowl or cut them up and put them in a blender. There is no need to remove the peels. If you’re using a blender, give them a whirl until they’ve become quite liquid. If they seem too dry, you can add a small amount of water. Pour out the mixture, soak cotton balls thoroughly in it, and apply to sunburn. An easier perhaps more effective method would be to soak gauze and lay it over the burn.
YOU WILL NEED… • 2 potatoes • A grater, blender, or knife • Cotton balls, cotton pads, facial tissue, or gauze
If you’re using a grater, grate the potatoes over a bowl and apply the pulp, trying to get as much juice as possible. You can also try simply slicing the potatoes, and lying the slices directly on your burn.

Did You Know.. • Mangoes are Australia’s most popular seasonal fruit • Australians eat their way through eight million trays of mangoes each year! • Mangoes have been around for at least 5,000 years and are from the same botanical family at cashews • The ‘blush’ of a mango refers to the colour of its skin as it ripens • There are more than 1,000 varieties of mangoes across the world
Super Foods
A Mango a Day As the saying goes, ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’. This old adage could well be used for mangoes because, like apples, they’re simply brimming with goodness. Australian mangoes are high in energy, low in fat, and are a great source of calcium and vitamins essential for good health. A 200g serve of ripe mango (the equivalent of less than one mango) provides you with up to three times your recommended daily intake of Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Vitamin C, an antioxidant important in protecting the body from infection, is required in the formation of collagen, a protein that gives structure to bones, cartilage, muscle and blood vessels. Vitamin C also aids the absorption of iron, necessary for transporting oxygen from the lungs to cells all around the body. And the good news doesn’t end there. Our Australian mangoes also provide more betacarotene than any other fruit and are a rich source of fibre and potassium. Beta-carotene is a powerful anti-oxidant that can help protect the body against disease and also fight the signs of ageing by assisting with the growth and repair of cells, tissues and skin. If you’re trying to shape up for summer, mangoes are ideal as a snack on their own or as part of a healthy meal. Half a mango contains only 248kj (60 calories) and because mangoes are low GI, most of their energy comes from carbohydrate which is absorbed slowly into the body, helping maintain healthy blood sugar levels, and keeping you satisfied for longer. Great news for the health conscious! Whether you’re trying to shed some weight or just enjoy a delicious summer treat, sinking your teeth into a juicy Australian mango is the way to go.

Seasame Street gets the nod Children are not the only ones who can learn a lesson or two from the Count. It turns out that neuroscientists are gaining key insights into brain development by turning to Sesame Street. After a study at the University of Rochester, scientists tested children’s brain activity after watching a 20 minute Sesame Street Video. The children took a standardized test for mathematics and a verbal IQ test, the results were, the children all had higher scores than those who didn’t watch the video! Fruit Flies Go Organic In Australia and around the world the “organic food” market is the fastest growing food sector, yet it is unclear whether organically raised food is nutritionally superior to conventionally grown food and whether consuming organic food bestows health benefits. In a recent study fruit flies were raised on diets consisting of extracts of either conventionally or organically raised produce (bananas, potatoes, raisins, soy beans). Flies raised on diets made from organically grown produce had greater fertility and longevity. On certain food sources, greater activity and greater stress resistance was additionally observed, suggesting that organic food bestows positive effects on fly health. The results providing evidence that organically raised food may provide animals and humans with tangible benefits to overall health. • A tall wooden or bamboo garden stake, or a broom or rake handle (approximately two metres long) • A shorter wooden or bamboo garden stake that forms the arms (approximately 1.5 m long) • A short (20 to 30 cm) wooden or bamboo garden stake to form the waist • String, gardening twine, or nails and a hammer to hold it all together.
• An old pair of stockings, an old pillow case or a calico bag • Acrylic paint or waterproof markers • Stuffing such as straw, soft-toy filling or old stockings.
• Gloves • Socks, old stockings or tights • Straw or soft-toy filling.
To dress your scarecrow, use clothes and shoes that you can spare from your wardrobe, or find some at your local op shop.
To give your scarecrow some hair, you could use a wig, raffia, straw, wool, strips of fabric or even bunches of lavender.
Finish off your scarecrow with a hat and accessories from your own wardrobe or from the op shop. For headwear, you could use a cap, a beanie, a scarf, a ribbon or even a tiara.
• Glasses, scarves, a hand bag, jewellery, imitation flowers • Gardening tools such as an old wheelbarrow (plant this with flowers, vegetables or herbs), or an old broom, rake or spade • Stuffed toys, such as a toy parrot to sit on the scarecrow’s shoulder.
Use straw or soft-toy filling to stuff your scarecrow’s head, body, arms and legs.

assemble your scarecrow 01
Attach the shorter stake (arms) to the tall stake either by tying with string or nailing them together. The shorter stake needs to be attached 10 to 15 cm down from the top end of the tall stake.
02
Attach the shortest stake about halfway down the tall stake to form the waist or hips, either by tying with string or nailing it on.
03
Dress the scarecrow. Attach the waist of the skirt or pants to the shortest stake with string, tape or staples.

04
If you want to stuff the arms, legs and body, tie off the ends of the sleeves and pants and fill them with your stuffing of choice. To stop the filling falling out at the bottom, either pin the base of the top to the pants, or tuck the top into the pants and use a belt or string (in the belt keepers) to attach them.
05
For the hands or feet, fill the socks, gloves or feet of the old stockings with your stuffing of choice. Attach the feet to the bottom of the pants by sewing or using safety pins. Attach the hands to the arms by pushing the hands onto the stake and tying them on with string or taping them with heavy tape. If using straw or lavender for the feet or hands, push it into the ends of the arms and legs of the clothes and allow it to stick out. To stop it falling out, tie some string around the end of the sleeve or trouser leg.
06
To make the head, either fill the pillowcase with your stuffing of choice, or cut one leg from the tights or stockings and stuff to make a round shape. Tie the end of the pillowcase or stocking off with string. Draw or paint a face on the head and allow it to dry.
07
08
Tie or tape the head onto the top of the stake.
Put a wig on top of the head, or attach straw or lavender stems or wool by taping, sewing or tying it onto the head or inside the hat. Place a hat on the head.
09
Decide where your scarecrow is going to stand. Push the bottom of the long stake into the ground or attach the scarecrow to another stake driven into the ground.

Circumcision Removes More Than Just Skin Circumcision has been performed on boys for thousands of years and for many reasons. Circumcision had become a routine practice in Australia by the 1950s, but the trend has reversed over the past 50 years. In Australia today fewer than 20 per cent of baby boys are being circumcised. When considering circumcision for your baby, you need to be aware of the possible risks and benefits. The rights of parents to give consent to a circumcision for their child are disputed. Some men resent that they were circumcised as children. They resent being deprived of the ability to make the decision for themselves as adults. When an infant’s penis is ‘circumcised’, this is what is forever lost: 50 to 80% of the total penile skin system, radically immobilizing the remaining shaft skin. If unfolded and spread out flat, the average adult foreskin measures 15 to 20 square inches, about the size of a postcard.
Most of the erogenous nerve tissue on the penis. The foreskin contains between 10,000 and 20,000 specialized erotogenic nerve endings of various types, which can discern slight motion, subtle changes in temperature, and fine gradations in texture. The amputation of this highly-innervated tissue reduces the sensitivity of the penis to that of ordinary skin. The densely innervated Ridged Bands, a specialized, extremely erogenous section of the prepuce located at the juncture of the outer foreskin and inner mucosal tissue. Approximately half of the smooth muscle sheath called the Dartos fascia. Thousands of coiled, fine-touch receptor cells, including Meissner’s Corpuscles. An estimated 240 feet of microscopic nerves, including branches of the dorsal nerve. Several feet of blood vessels, including the frenular artery and portions of the dorsal artery, the loss of which interrupts normal blood flow
to the shaft and glans of the penis, severely damaging its natural function. Lymphatic vessels, the loss of which interrupts the lymph flow within the body’s immune system. The entire immunological defense system of the soft mucosa which produces antibacterial and antiviral proteins such as lysozyme, the same as found in mother’s milk, and plasma cells which secrete immunoglobulin antibodies. Ectopic sebaceous glands, which lubricate, moisturize, and regulate a healthy pH balance, thereby maintaining the erotogenic sensitivity of the glans. The apocrine glands, which produce pheromones, nature’s powerful, silent, invisible sexual signals/stimulants. Specialized epithelial Langerhans cells, an immune system component. Estrogen receptors - the purpose and value of which are not yet fully understood.
many layers of skin cells, severly reducing the sensitivity of the glans to external stimulation such as a soft touch. The sensitivity continues to decrease over time, until eventually all sensitivity is lost. 10% to 20% of the penis’s circumference, because its double-layered wrapping of loose foreskin is now missing, making the circumcised penis thinner. As much as one inch of the erect penis’s length due to scarring, and shrinkage from loss of the mobile, richly-vascularized foreskin. The gliding action of the penis within its foreskin. The foreskin’s abundance (15-20 sq.in.) of specialized, self-lubricating skin gives the natural penis its anatomically unique ability to smoothly slide back and forth within itself, thereby permitting non-abrasive intercourse, without drying out the vagina.
Parents face a huge decision when it comes to circumcision
The connective synechiae, which fuses the foreskin to the glans while the penis develops during infancy. It is destroyed when the foreskin is torn from the glans during the circumcision operation. The frenulum, the sensitive ‘V’-shaped tethering structure at the base of the glans on the underside of the penis, is also usually amputated, severed, or destroyed.
The protective covering of the glans, which is actually an internal organ. The foreskin shields the glans from abrasion, drying, and callusing, and protects the glans from dirt and other contaminants. Loss of sexual sensitivity in the glans. The glans of an intact penis is normally a soft, moist, delicate organ, similar in texture to the smooth skin lining the inside of the lips of your mouth. When the foreskin is amputated it no longer provides protection to the glans against abrasion, or even exposure to the air. This causes the glans to dry out - imagine what would happen to your eyeballs if your eyelids were removed. It also causes the skin on the glans to thicken and harden as a protection against abrasion. This ‘callousing’ effect known as keratinization - causes any remaining nerves on the glans to become buried under
The deep pink to red to dark purple natural coloration of the glans.
There is considerable evidence that a circumcised penis loses its capacity for subtle electromagnetic communication that occurs only during contact between mucous membranes, an interaction which contributes to the sense of the healing power of sexual ecstasy. In other words, circumcision forever diminishes the intensity of both the male and female orgasm and its physical, psychological, and spiritual benefits. Many babies die as a result of circumcision, a fact the circumcision industry obscures and conceals. THINGS TO REMEMBER Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin that covers the tip of the penis. Most circumcisions are performed for family, cultural or religious reasons. In Australia today, fewer than 20 per cent of boys are circumcised. When considering circumcision for your child, you should be aware of the possible risks and benefits. Circumcision may offer health benefits, although these may be too small to justify surgery. There are different methods of circumcision. The procedure can be performed using a general anesthetic or local anaesthetic.
Wellness starts with Chiropractic WORDS BY DEBORAH MITCHELL
Our kids are so special to us that sometimes, in an effort to protect them, we become overprotective and deprive them of necessary and valuable experiences. I find that many people do not understand that Chiropractors are not just ‘back doctors’ and that regular adjustments help to keep your immune system working the best it can. We are a Chiropractic family, meaning we all get regular adjustments, even when there are no symptoms, to ensure we are all functioning to the best of our abilities. At the first sign of fever, pain, coughs and colds, our first stop is the Chiropractors. An adjustment removes the interference and pressure on our nervous system, thus allowing the body to then start healing itself – without drugs! “Raising a child to be well in our society takes discipline, perseverance, consistency, and most of all patience.” To survive in today’s society, your body and your children’s bodies are dependant on their bodies ability to adapt to stress, not just emotional and physical stress. Everyday your family is subjected to toxins in our environment, the air we breathe, the water we drink, paints, cleaning chemicals, air fresheners, deodorants, perfumes etc. The food we eat, junk food, fast food, soft drinks, non-organic fruit and vegetables, contaminated meat products. We wear cheap fashionable jewellery full of harmful chemicals, ill-fitting shoes, carry heavy bags. Our bodies are subjected to emotional stress, physical stress from falls and accidents, the list goes on. If these stresses continue day after day, year after year, our bodies start to show signs of pain, disease and chronic illness. Chiropractic adjustments care helps eliminate the interference and helps the body start to heal itself. Adjustments are painless and drug free. Chiropractic principles are that the body has an innate ability to take care of itself, given the lack of interference, it is usually capable to heal itself. It is an in thing to say you are raising your kids naturally. Many parents are questioning traditional healthcare and searching for ways to implement holistic and more natural strategies to raise their
children. This is not to be taken lightly Our family has moved away from, but not totally removed ourselves from ‘modern medicine’. Our family try to use this mantra for deciding on whether or not a visit to a Doctor or even the hospital is required. It is the three ‘B’s” motto. Is it Burnt? Is it Broken? Or is it Busted open (requiring stiches) obviously modern medicine has a place and for our family we try to use it for first aid. Once you start researching as we have done over the past few years, you may start to define the reason you want to make a change and take a proactive approach at raising your family naturally. We live in a society that promotes drugs, uses scare tactics and treats every symptom without looking for the root of the problem and treating that. You might be surprised to read this is what the World Health Organization’s (WHO) definition of health is: “Health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (illness.” In reality health does not have much to do with the symptom presenting itself but more about how your family or child adapts to physical, emotional or chemical stresses. For our family, Chiropractic brings out the best. The girls have a better quality of sleep, eat better, have better quality movement for their daily activities and sports. They have a healthier spine and nervous system, and very really get sick. Is Chiropractic safe? It is well documented in professional journals of all kinds. Serious side effects of chiropractic manipulation occur in approximately one out of every one million adjustments. In the journal of American Medical Association (April 1998), the article states “Discovering new dangers of drugs after marketing is common. Overall 51% of approved drugs have serious side effects not detected prior to approval. Merely discovering adverse effects is not by it self sufficient to protect the public. Each year prescription drugs injure 1.5 million people so severely they require hospitalisation and 100,000 people die, making prescription drugs the 4th leading cause of death in the United States.” So the question was “is Chiropractic safe?”.
Sole Revolution With keeping with our own body’s efficient blueprint and ability to thrive, Sole revolution gives superior support by adhering to the design of the foot and providing support for all three arches in the mid-foot.
Children’s bodies have 206 bones, 639 muscles, 900 ligaments all connected by over 94 km’s of nerves. Their bodies need all the help they can to stay balanced.
Finally, An Orthotic Designed with our Environmental Evolution in Mind Research shows that by the age of 20 over 80% of the population has dropped arches in the feet. This has happened because we are no longer walking on the surfaces we were designed for – we have made hard surfaces such as concrete, tiles and floorboards which just smash our feet.
