New Neighborhood Block Spring 2021 Integrated Studio with Brandon Robles Logan Square, Chicago, IL 300,000sf Mixed Use Affordable Housing 2

Located at the western terminus of the 606, in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago, the New Neighborhood Block affordable housing complex utilizes elements of the typical Chicago Block structure and reorganizes them into a multifamily development. The site also contains a public market, a community center, and a childcare center.

Buffer

The traditional block structure is comprised of the home, buffer, circulation, and active spaces that segment the neighborhood in plan, or two dimensionally. Due to this mode of organization, higher density housing is hard to come by, community gathering space is scarce, and private space is prioritized. The New Neighborhood Block complex

Circulation

Active

aims to re-purpose these familiar neighborhood elements in to a higher density composition that emphasizes public space and community. The single family unit becomes town homes and apartment buildings, the front yard becomes activated walkways, the circulation is vertical and horizontal, and the green spaces are shared. 3

The floor plan above showcases the connective public walkways that offer programs such as a patio dining space and a public library lounge to the residents and the surrounding neighborhood. The plan features studio, 2 bedroom, and 3 bedroom plans, which all have direct access to the walkways and central courtyards.

Garden walkways contain community planters for vegetables and herbs. The food produced may be shared by all residents and contributing community members.

Play walkways contain slides, games, and play structures for the families in the complex to enjoy.

East Elevation

The development features a through-street, Misty Way, that divides the site, creating two separate courtyards that align across the street. Misty Way supports vehicular traffic and parking during the week and is closed off for strictly pedestrian use on Saturdays. Local vendors set up stands lining the street to activate it into a farmers’ market. 6

The facades are composed of scalloped shingles, inspired by single family units in the surrounding context of the site. The custom scale increases in correspondence with the density of the units in the building. The walkways are brightly colored to highlight the community space and give the residents a deeper sense of identity within the site.

The use of CLT as the primary building material allowed the walkways to be integrated and supported by the units’ load bearing walls. The community programs puncture through the entire building, allowing continuous movement through the site, serving the population approaching from the 606 and the neighborhood. 7

New River Crossing AIA Virginia Prize Competition Christiansburg, VA 1,400sf station + 1,000’ platform 8

Situated in Christiansburg, Virginia, a multi-modal transportation hub aims to serve the New River Valley. The station houses the passenger rail, has direct vehicular access, and is adjacent to a foot and bicycle path, the Huckleberry Trail. Included in the program was a small cafe and a waiting area to house approximately 50 people.

The design was separated into three levels by their degree of urgency, all united by a grand stair to invite in the public. The first level provides direct access to the platform by bypassing the interior. The second level contains the main waiting area and ticket vendors. The third level contains the cafe waiting area and the restrooms. 9

IAWA Archive Spring 2019 Buenos Aires, Argentina Architectural Archive 10

The South American branch of the International Archive of Women in Architecture is located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The buildings contain researcher’s residences, study lounges, archival space, and a cafe. The two buildings utilize negative space and facade composition to organize and differentiate between the public and private programs.

Perforated facade inspired by Mill Mountain

The solar stacking tilts the form to optimize daylighting by shading the south facing units and exposing the north facing units. The perforated facade panels provide privacy for the residents and filter light into the exterior corridors. The pattern mimics the common species of trees found on Mill Mountain. 13
