Kampong Botanical Research Center was an exploration in the combination of sustainable technologies and design to create a self sustaining “off the grid” facility. The two “Leaf” designs enables the project to become its own living form. The leaves take on the characteristics of the natural life system of plants through photosynthesis, moisture insulation, and water reclamation. The curved walls and linear circulation allow for a natural venturian wind effect to eliminate mechanical air conditioning.

Located on the Brickell Avenue, 1401 Brickel is a state of the art office tower situated between two of Miami’s most iconic buildings. Driving force behind the design was to create a regionally specific building. Open air terraces on both sides of the project allow for outdoor spaces to take full advantage of the view and the tropical climate of South Florida.

CONCEPTUAL RESIDENTIAL HOSPITALITY

COMMERCIAL The massing and facade design reinforces the scale of the buildings along the street edge and maintains the impression of the original long, thin lots of the district. The program is distributed in a series of adjacent floatig cubes that allow for seasonal breezes to regulate temperatures through out the year.

Pelican Island Park is a self-sustainable facility that allows the ecosystem of the bay to thrive and encourage its appreciation while producing fresh water for the City of Miami Beach.

The park is composed by a synchronized array of grounded and floating spherical pods arranged to maintain and stimulate the natural growth of the bay. Recreation fields, botanical gardens, and amphitheaters house the larger pods which are embedded in the sea floor and are interconnected by floating thoroughfares that leisurely transport visitors via walkways and cycling. The floating pads are smaller in scale but contain solar power collectors, reflectors, and individual desalination plants with their respective storage tanks. The solar power plant and desalination work symbiotically creating a closed and sustainable cycle. Excessive product in the for of extra electricity or extra drinking water would be pumped into the immediate grid for use by the City of Miami Beach in order to ease energy or water demands. The Pelican Island Park is the opportunity to enjoy the splendor of the bay by safely inhabiting it and employing the need for alternative power as the density of the city increases.

Garden Pods; The numerous botanical gardens are located throughout the park serving as an educational tool. Each pod would house a micro climate to introduce the visitor to other types of green environments, a pod for indigenous plants to Florida and a pod for introduced flora, a pod which offers a view into the underwater world. There is many other opportunities. Recreation Fields; The largest pods of the park serve as the gathering places. Sporting events, concerts to plays. The large surfaces can be used for soccer, football, baseball or large outdoor auditoriums.

Walkways; The walkways through the site mimic the seaweed from the site; floating and changing shape with the current of the water. The path has multiple levels for different modes of travel. Walking or jogging is reserved for higher levels in order to take in the sites. Lower level is reserved for the cyclists more concentrated on the path immediately in front of them. Desalinization Pods; The Primary intention of the plant is to supply fresh water to Pelican Island Park and the City of Miami Beach in times of emergency. This is a low energy way of creating fresh water. A by-product of this process is concentrated salt solution which is later used in the solar power plant.

Solar Reflector Pods; These mirrored pods are part of the solar power plant used in the collection of the suns energy by reflecting the sunlight to a receiver. This form of energy collection can be used when cloudy or even after dark

Solar Power Plant; The system utilized in this instance is that of the solar energy tower. This system uses receiver towers which collects the reflected light from the hundreds of mirrored panels that are forced on the towers. This for of energy collection is one of the most efficient. The process heats salt to a molten level in order to transfer heat into energy. With a wide base, each receiver tower houses a plant, which is composed a molten salt tank, steam generator, turbine and cold storage tank.

Located in Shanghai China, Spanish Mediterranean takes on a new and foreign respect in the area. The design intent is to stay true to the Mediterranean architecture. This project takes an understanding of proportions and the balance between open / public and closed / private spaces. This is but a small parcel of a much bigger master plan that will incorporate different architectural styles from all over the world.

JORDAN DEAD SEA RESORT & SPA

The terraced massing of the four star hotel is for most part a result of the hillside terrain it sits on. There area few instances when the geometry of the building dynamically breaks out such a guestroom wing placed perpendicular to the hillside strata, with double loaded, angled guestrooms. This arrangement allows for excellent views up and down the Dead Sea coast. The other moment is a cantilevered pool extending over the sites’s most dramatic wadi.

The inspiration for the 5 star hotel is petra. The cliff side unit-blocks appear to be hanging from the ledge. Guestroom units are “carved” into these undulating forms as Petra’s temples were carved into hillsides. The Dead Sea views orient terraces, lobby and restuarant locations.
