Rotorua Lakes High School

NEWSLETTER ISSUE No. 09 – 9 JUNE 2023

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the Secondary Schools Principal’s Conference in New Plymouth. Amongst other topics, there were interesting discussions about how to ensure best use of Artificial Intelligence in Education. This will be an ongoing challenge as we come to grips with this tool. Thank you to Deputy Principal Ms J Sturme for stepping in as Acting Principal and all our Senior Leadership Team. The school was in very safe hands.

We had a fantastic few weeks with our 2023 Rotorua Lakes High School Haka Competition. All our houses competed and were in fine form. It is really great to see how well our students have done and the hard work that has been put into this event. Thank you so much to all our Heads of Houses for organizing this for our students and to Matua Tamihana for hosting the event. It was a pleasure to see some familiar faces of our ex-students coming in to be our judges for the final.

Our Kapa Haka students will be participating in the Te Arawa Kapahaka Regionals this Friday. We are so appreciative of the hard work and dedication that our students, staff, and tutors have put into their preparation. Their commitment has been remarkable, with many weekends devoted to practice and guidance from our tutors. From all staff at Lakes High, we wish you the best of luck. Kia kaha me te pai katoa!

As we have communicated, there is ongoing industrial action being taken by the PPTA (Teachers Union). As a school, we support the reasons behind the action – to improve resources and conditions for our rangitahi – but we are extremely aware of the disruption this is causing. We are hopeful that the parties can negotiate a resolution in the near future.

Have a lovely weekend.

LOVES ME NOT

Loves Me Not is a national programme run by the NZ Police for Yr12 students. It is a programme that equips students with the knowledge to foster healthy relationships. It looks at power imbalances, consent, being an active bystander and many more important elements of positive relationships.

This year Loves Me Not will be held on Thursday 22nd June. All Yr 12 students will be involved. Students are to meet in the Auditorium at house group time. Groups will be mentored by a member of NZ Police, a RLHS teacher and another facilitator who works in the youth development space. Yr12 students are permitted to wear mufti for this day. Any questions, please contact hodgeh@rotorualakes.school.nz

PARENT / TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Due to the Industrial Action we are currently reworking the plan for our interviews. They will still be held on Wednesday and Thursday 22 June, but within the school day. We will notify parents shortly.

Please ensure you have access to Schoolbridge as this is where you will book school interviews.

Thank you for your support.

STUDENT SUCCESSES

OUTSTANDING RESULTS AT MOTOCROSS EVENT

Delton Manson, Fletcher Saunders and Ticayla Manson represented Rotorua Lakes High at the North King Country MX Schools Event. 450 riders attended, one of the biggest school motocross events there has been. For a school to be eligible for the overall results you had to have a minimum of 3 riders and your 3 top riders results were collated for the overall positions. After a great day of riding, we were hoping to have had at least a top 10 finish as there are schools there that have very large number of riders. So, taking away 2nd place was a fabulous surprise to us all! Our riders received a trophy which was wonderful to see. Individually they came home in 3rd, 6th & 4th in their respective classes.

Outstanding and congratulations to all.

FANTASTIC HAKA COMPETITION

What an amazing show of House Spirit at RLHS! Thanks to Matua Tamihana for MCing, and to past students Genesis, Tangiteoraiti, Freddy-Ray and Keidon for judging.

Results: 4th = Tarawera

3rd = Okareka

2nd = Rotokakahi

1st = Tikitapu

OUR BRILLIANT CHESS CLUB

Seven Rotorua Lakes students recently participated in the Rotorua Chess Regionals at Rotorua Boys High. There were 100 students entered and 14 teams. The Lakes High players had a great day all winning at least two of their games. The team came 10th which is a great effort considering this was the first tournament for some of them. Our top player for the day was Waaka GraceHarris with 4 wins, he came 38th place overall. We are looking forward to the next regionals and we hope more Rotorua Lakes players can join the team. Mauria te pono!

HUGE CRICKET SUCCESS

Another wonderful recognition of our year 11 student, Sadie Stewart’s hard work and dedication last summer with the Rotorua Cricket Association acknowledging her with both the EVES School Girl Cricketer of the Year and the Senior Woman Player of the Year last weekend.

The Geyser Rebels player was named captain of the BOP Under 16s and still has another season in this age group. The invitation to play with the Cadets Cricket Club women first XI alongside BOP, ND and even NZ players in the 2nd half of the season has been an amazing pathway for her development. She was awarded the Cadets bowling trophy and played all senior BOP women's fixtures last summer under the watchful coaching eye of Kingsley Smith.

SENSATIONAL SQUASH

Two of our senior students traveled to Tauranga to compete in the BOP Boys Squash Individual Champs. Due to big entries there were 6 divisions.

Kobe Smith made it to the Div.6 finals winning 15-9, 15-6. Hayden Martin also made the finals for Div 4 winning 15-5, 15-7.

Great results boys.

BOYS 1st XI HOCKEY LAST WEEK

At home against Trident the Boys 1st XI Hockey had an exciting game, narrowly going down in a 1-2 loss. The first 2 quarters had no scoring. Trident had some chances with excellent goalkeeping from Lachie Hoggard keeping them scoreless. Good play from Lakes ultimately went unrewarded as well as we failed to convert on our chances in the circle. The third quarter saw Trident scoring twice from well worked Penalty Corners. In the final quarter Lakes lifted with a well finished goal from Harry Cheesman, setting up an exciting end to the match as Lakes pushed hard to score an equaliser. Player of the Day - Preston Cleaver, a young player who continues to step up each week with good defence and passing. Teina Meenehan was also strong at the

ROCK CLIMBING CHAMPS

BOP Secondary School Climbing Champs, Rocktopia, Mount Maunganui. Such a cool venue! Yr 9 & 10's have climbed so well!

BADMINTON CHAMPS

Yesterday our boys’ badminton team competed at the Central BOP Schools Senior Champs. We had to call on 2 junior boys to make up our team of Hayden Martin, Luke Waites, Daniel Anderson and Jacob Waites. We played in Div.2 of 3 divisions winning 2 out of 4 matches. The highlights were Hayden winning all his singles and with Jacob winning all their doubles games. Our 2 juniors also finished on a high note winning 2 singles and 2 doubles matches.

EX-STUDENTS SUCCESS

Some more ex-student sporting success! George Snook and River Mutton, were both second at the Extreme Kayak World Champs, held on the Passer River in South Tyrol, Italy in the weekend. Also of note River's brother Zack who came first.

Well done to you all!
