Ahhh, summer is here. It’s time to kick-back and relax in the backyard. Unfortunately, this is also when a lot of “unwanted guests” show up as well: bugs, mosquitos and weeds. By taking proper care of your lawn, however, you can get the most of it, and get the most out of your summer.

So, keep your lawn lush, green, and bug free this summer by practicing proper lawn care, with these helpful tips. And remember, for the best lawn care, look into hiring a professional lawn care company, which will allow you even more time in the hammock with a cold drink in hand.

• Water your lawn. But be sure to practice proper watering and water conservation techniques. The morning hours are the best time to water your lawn, because the air is cooler. In the middle of the day, water evaporates too quickly, and doing it at night is even worse. Water can cling to blades of grass overnight, and it sits there and promotes fungus and lawn diseases. • Water long enough to moisten the soil about six inches down, but don’t water any more than that. Use water wisely, especially in the summer when a lack of rain can lead to water deficits and droughts.

The first time you water your lawn this summer, check it every 15 minutes to see how moist the soil is. When the soil reaches six inches in depth, record the time that it took, and use that as a timeframe moving forward. • Check your lawn for any signs of discolor or poor texture. Browner, more brittle grass can be signs of damage.

• Hire a pest-control service to spray around the foundation of your home to keep the bugs on the outside. You can also reduce bugs’ outside presence by treating the lawn. • Pour out standing water as it collects to prevent mosquitos from breeding. • While the lawn is normally the focus point of the yard, don’t forget about trees, shrubs and other outdoor plants. Mulch beds are important too. Keeping your yard well-maintained will increase your home’s value as well.

Make sure you stay hydrated (with water, not beer, as tempting as it may be). Working in the summer heat it can be tempting to wear shorts and fl ip fl ops, but it’s important to wear closed toe shoes and long pants to protect yourself. If working out in the elements isn’t your thing, consider hiring a professional. They’ll make sure everything you need gets done, and they might fi nd things you overlooked.

Ahhh, summer is here. And , unfortunately, so are the bugs. They’re back in full force from their wintery graves. And they ain’t going anywhere until well after Labor Day. Bug issues range from the mild annoyance of ants in the house, to itchy mosquito bites, to full blown serious health issues associated with insects, like ticks. Protecting your home from bugs should be a priority when summer rolls around, so follow these tips to keep the winged, six-legged demons away from your home.

Keep the Outside Free of Debris. Firewood stacks, compost bins, and yard waste are like a five-star resort for insects. Keep firewood covered in the summer months, or give it away. dump out or clear out any areas of standing water; it’s a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Keep landscape beds free of weeds and plant debris, they can house bugs. And keep branches and plants away from your home’s foundation. Dry Up Damp Areas. Bugs are always searching for water, especially in the summer heat. Some home invading pests, such a silverfish and centipedes like to hang out in damp places. So fix leaky faucets, and make sure the outdoor spigot isn’t dripping. You’re probably blasting the A/C all summer long, so make sure it’s not leaking. Cracks and Holes Are Like a Wide Open Door. Closely inspect your home’s foundation and any window or door screens. Make any necessary repairs. Kill Any Bugs You See. Stop small bug problems from becoming big ones. We’re not telling you to go Predator on the fruit flies in your kitchen, but we are telling you to get some insect control products that meet your indoor bug control needs, such as baits, sprays, and other ready-to-use products. Find some with natural or biodegradable ingredients that are safe to use around kids and pets. Create a Barrier to keep the bugs out. Use a perimeter insect killer and spray around the foundation of your home. Also get insect killer that is safe for plants and spray it on flower beds and mulched areas.

There are trillions of insects on the planet, and some of them will pay you a summer time visit. But, if you heed our wise advice, you can prevent them from becoming a real issue and keep your home that summer-time oasis it was meant to be.

Buying a seasonal home can be worth it if you have a plan in place. If you plan on renting the house out on Airbnb or Vacation Rental by Owner (VRBO), look at what similar houses are renting for. Then you can plan accordingly to determine how much income the property might bring in.
