Gustav Klimt Koloman Moser The Wiener Werkstatte was created as an outlet for graduates of Kunstgewerbeschule. The workshop bridged the gap between fine art and graphic design with advertisement posters and over one thousand decorative post cards. This was an inexpensive way to experiment.

In 1903 the secessionists featured only Japanese artists in the exhibition hall. Japanese art influenced the secessionist a great deal. They favored the flat backgrounds, heavy geometric outlines and figure ground reversal.

The aesthetic hovers between natural and geometric. The common checkerboard motif was anything but rigid and curved lines were favored over a rhythmic grid system. Reductive style was a combination flat forms and bright complementary colors like blue and orange.

Creative Brief The first spread of the magazine is based off of editorial fashion photo shoots. The clothing used for the photo shoot was made for my Line Development class. The line is a wearable rendition of melting ice. The colors chosen represent the dark colors of deep oceans, bright snow, and frozen ice caps. I wanted to continue this imitation of melting ice throughout the magazine. This is why I used the same color scheme, adding in grey as a background color to emphasize the key colors. This is also why they back drop in the photo shoot is grey. From the photo shcot I narrowed down the photos from over 200 to six key photos. For the last spread I chose to do a fake article on Berenik, a Swiss designer with a graphic design background. I chose Berenik specifically because of the designer’s background in graphic design. The photo I chose has a slight fade to the right so I decided to emphasize this and put the article on the lightest part.

the bubble hem of the dress was stuffed with light blue crinoline to give the skirt an ombre effect. this mimics the way glaciers melt.
