Grain of Emptiness: Buddhism-Inspired Contemporary Art features modern and contemporary art by generationally and culturally disparate artists whose works engage in one way or another with Buddhist precepts and rituals. Video, installation, painting, photography, and performance art by Wolfgang Laib, Charmion von Wiegand, Sanford Biggers, Atta Kim, and Theaster Gates explore the ways in which Buddhism has been incorporated into the lives of people across cultures, opening up a discussion about the practice.

impermanence. Buddhists regard the nature of reality

on the central Buddhist notions of emptiness and as void, being without a stable core, recognizing that our analytical minds create a deluded reality. This voidness and volatility are also often reflected in the work of contemporary artists influenced by Buddhism. A multitude of content, forms, and colors are abstracted to the essential, to something less vulnerable to decay and change.
