Light is captivating. It is what breathes life into every building. It is what transforms surface into texture and pattern. The interplay of light and space play a very important role in how I perceive environments. The following are a few of the projects in which light was an important feature for the design idea.

HarrisonKornberg won the commission to reinvigorate the Gragg Building and improve the surrounding park and adjacent maintenance facility. Upgrades respect the historically significant building exterior and interior public spaces while bringing more daylight and open views into the previously dark interior. The project incorporates many sustainable design features and strategies, such as salvaged and recycled materials, highly efficient HVAC and lighting, and an abundance of controlled natural light. Gragg has been listed on local, state and national historical registries, has been featured in Texas Architect, and has garnered design awards from Texas Construction (Best of 2010), a Good Brick Award from the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance and most recently the 2013 Heritage Award from the Urban Land Institute. LEED GOLD Project COMPLETED IN 2010 project designer in charge of exterior and interior design efforts, detail implementation, coordination, finishes, furniture selection and procurement coordination.

Sweeping linear cantilevered wings of office space are a glow in twilight. The new roof top monitors flood interior spaces with natural light blending interior and exterior space. left image An open plan workspace is shown here with light spilling in from ribbon windows and the skylight above. The raw concrete structure of the building is celebrated and left exposed to show the tectonic charm of the space. Office furnishings bring a level of grounded sophistication, allowing the sights and sounds of the natural surround to fill the senses. right image

A modern dining hall for a mid century modern gem. Painstaking care was taken in selecting the glazing sytem, the ceiling system, lighting and furniture for the hall. We wanted to respect the history of the building while modernizing the space. Again, here respecting the view was paramount. Pops of green and yellow color on the floor pull the vegetated park view inward, melding interior and exterior.

The detailing of the existing corridors was a major feature of the historic renovation for the project. Large mahogony wood panels were salvaged, re-finished and re-used to maintain the initial character of the walkways surrounding the interior courtyard. In order to filter more light into the interior work places, all glass office fronts were used in select locations. The result is a light filled, view dominated office environment that promotes wellness and activity.

Time gives presence. A foundation to all that has been and will be. Timelessness for design is the highest honor, recognizing a the benevolence of a project that is multi-generational. As a designer and an architect one strives to understand and input the value of time into each project. Thinking about how it will be is the the world was, how it is and what is biggest reward of the process. The following projects dive into that thinking and time relation. 56

The idea of Space to me is the effort to create an environment that expresses cultural, geophysical, and timeless moments of place. It is the culmination of the interplay between Light and Time - elliciting a tangibility to all human senses with formal collisions of earth, steel, and glass. The following projects exemplify this notion of space-making. 104
