Utilitarianism in 21st Century: Modern Architecture
The Winton Gallery
“The design explores the many influences of mathematics in our everyday lives; transforming seemingly abstract mathematical concepts into an exciting interactive experience for visitors of all ages,” stated Hadid.
Architects: Zaha Hadid Architects Area: 913 m² Finished in Year: 2016 Manufacturers: Bolidt, ODICO, Reier
The positioning of the more than 100 historical objects, and the production of robust arch-like benches using robotic manufacture, all embody the mathematical spirit of the brief. The resulting spatial experience created by these components within the Winton Gallery enables
visitors to see some of the many actual and perceivable ways in which mathematics touches our lives. Zaha Hadid Architects has been selected to design a new mathematics gallery in London’s Science Museum. Aimed to be the “world’s foremost gallery of mathematics,”

Omotesando Hills shopping mall, Marni’s flagship Inspired by a Japanese garden reinterpreted in a contemporary way, the store pays homage to the city, mixing and matching materials: cement mixed with marble, herringbone wood combined with red marble inserts. The juxtapositions continue on the floors and ceilings as well. Soft, supple forms extend to the walls, sofas, chairs, shelves, the iconic wavy steel railings, accompanied by lively tones of red, lilac, ochre and orange.
M Dreams by Blu Water Studio The M Dreams boutique in Kuala Lumpur is Malaysia’s first Melissa retail space. KL-based Blu Water Studio designed the store in the 1 Utama Shopping Centre, infusing it with expressions of malleability and formal manipulation. The interior design studio was inspired by the manipulation of sheets of paper, and explored shapes that would result from compressing sheets and peeling layers.
The peeling effect is most obvious in a series of wall-mounted shelves that appear to have been formed by peeling sheets up and away from the vertical plane.
On the opposite wall, a pinching effect is suggested by a row of multi-level display benches. Say the designers, “Giant fingers can be imagined pressing and pinching the floor and wall, fashioning ribbons.”
A rippling solid ‘curtain’ skirts the top of the walls, concealing light sources and accommodating projections of Melissa campaigns. Throughout, the fluidity of the elements reinforces both the curvaceous shoe designs as well as the plastic’s malleability.

Architects: Zemberek Design Area: 250 m²
Year: 2014
It was needed to design a space where flexibility of working in motion and accessing the whole volume instead of using a limited area is possible. The concept was based on the suggestion of establishing a platform where it is possible to expand the possibilities instead of using a desk that limits the size of the usable space and accessibility.

Model 1 My first model was inspired by my Environmental inspired mood board. I wanted to create circular shapes as the base of the model with higher level circles above the ground level. The initial idea was to was to make each area of the circles, an area where there would be clothes stall and racks with clothes.
Model 2
This is a movement and flow inspired model for an interior space. The form of this structure was also inspired by The Winton Gallery and Zaha Hadid’s architectural structure.
Model 3 In my third model, I was inspired by my Baoyan Children’s Entertainment Park – Beijing, China Research. The archway in the research motivated me to use this in my model. However, if I were to further develop this idea, I would include a thicker arch way with dividers so that the arch way has compartments / shelves.
Model 4
This design was inspired by my research on the M Dreams by Blu Water Studio and the theme of my Movement & Flow inspired mood board. I wanted to use the idea of The peeling effect to use as shelves so that I can place shoes or other accessories on the “S” shaped shelve.
In another part of my fourth model, I also wanted to use a semi-circled shaped shelves for extra storage space to place accessories and fashion related item.
Secondary Research interior designs
Model 1 Sketchup model Without building background and in an exterior space.
For my final interior design, I have chosen model 1 because I liked the idea of different levels of the structure and the environmental style/patterns of the different size circles. In this model, I also wanted to combine my research and my model 4 design into this interior space because I wanted to add the theme of my Movement & Flow into the design. The “s” shaped shelves would be implemented into one of the circular room levels. However, this would be added if I develop this design further. The wall dividers and theme were inspired by my secondary research on retail interiors.
