2nd Place Award After being inspired doing smaller, fun competitions, our group decided to tackle a slightly larger, real-world-problem competition aimed at young professionals working through their IDP credit hours. Aimed at affordable housing in the San Fernando Valley, we believed in pushing “beyond the box” to develop ideas surrounding expandability, perception of space, and using materials/methods in new ways.
BEYOND THE BOX affordable multi-family housing for the San Fernando Valley

THE CHALLENGE was to create a
Prototypical “Affordable” Housing Complex for California’s San Fernando Valley. The challenge was approached in a holistic fashion, with initial costs not being the overall determining factor, but considering operating costs, concise planning, and alternative revenue sources. The proposed micro-community is intended to be reasonably priced to target a range of income and user types including singles, couples, and families. Five main strategies were employed to address affordability and to maximize usable space. These are: 1) Movable Partitions [allow space to be dual purposed] 2) Expansive Balconies [expand the living space] 3) Exterior Walkways [shade the units from heat gain] 4) Optional Retail Component [provides additional income] 5) Car Sharing [minimizes car expenses].

THREE BEDROOM
A MOVABLE WALL SYSTEM is incorporated into each unit, allowing them to be an average of 175 square feet smaller - reducing construction costs by nearly $375.000. The system works by allowing beds to fold into movable cabinets when not in use and the adjoining living space to expand. Over the 20-total units there is nearly 3,300 square feet of flexible space. EXPANSIVE BALCONIES are separated from the interior living space by roll up, garage like, walls - allowing the living space to expand uninterupted onto the balconies during warmer days. This feature provides natural ventilation to reduce cooling costs.
EXTERIOR WALKWAYS [interior courtyard]
EXTERIOR WALKWAYS allow the creation of an interior courtyard which is given over to a playground - visually accessible from all units. Parents can feel safe knowing that they can easilly monitor their children from their homes. The walkways act as sunshades to reduce the heating load on the units and therefore the annual heating bills.

AN OPTIONAL RETAIL COMPONENT is available to maximize flexibilty of this prototype. On appropriate sites, the retail lease could help offset the expense costs to unit owners and provide additional community space on the rooftop garden. CAR SHARING is utilized to reduce the need for parking spaces in the on-grade covered parking area. Studies show that a single shared car can replace 4-10 privately owned cars. Beyond simply reducing the area of paving to be installed, and therefore construction costs, this approach has a much broader impact on micro-communities like this. If the car-sharing scheme is based on rechargable vehicles, roof space has been made available for photo-voltaic arrays.

FEEK Your Imagination - “Tanakube” furniture design competition FGM Architects (2013) Carol Stolt, Daniel Purpura, Beth Ralston (Wagner), Ryan Bloom, Robert Chorazy, Allison Schneider, Janice Ninan
1st Place Award Why focus solely on buildings? Working with a group of architects and interior designers, the FGM Chicago Team set out to explore the world of foam furniture with a competition sponsored by FEEK North America and Trendway. Feeding off our work’s focus on eductional projects, our team developed a puzzle-like box of furniture pieces that could be reconfigued in a collection of ways for fun, productive, and sociable environments. Presented in a multitude of mediums, including prints, physical models, and a video, our team finished 1st place in the competition. As winners, we had the opportunity to explore the FEEK North America factory in Holland, Michigan and have our furniture built in a full-scale form for the FGM office. An exciting experience! Several former students and I were afforded the unique opportunity to partner with working MBRE students in this fall-semester class to develop an affordable housing redevelopment scheme for the existing site of the former Francis Cabrini Homes in northern Chicago. We got a crash course in pro-forma, market, and development analysis from the students and professors, and worked in teams to develop viable schemes for the site. As consulting architectural intern, I worked with the team to develop the overall site scheme, program, conceptual development design, and presentation materials for the scheme based on their market research and site analysis. CANstruction Chicago design competition and food donation campaign “Power of Partnerships” Team (fall 2014) final can total approx. 6,000 cans “Team POP” became an appropriate name for our group as a result of our very diverse and broad collection of volunteers. We desired to celebrate the City of Chicago itself and the vast importance of the river in connecting all of us as people through transportation, recreation, and beauty. 6,000 cans later, we had a “bridge and skyline” design with a boat delivering food to the hungry children, adults, and families of Chicago!

(re)fortify Chicago building forts - teaching kids about design - gathering clothing donations for those in need FGM Architects Build Team (spring 2014) “Kids’ Choice Award Winners” Allison Schneider, Michael Johnson, Robert Chorazy, Daniel Purpura, Ryan Bloom, Janice Ninan, Beth Ralston (Wagner), Amari (our little architect!)
organizer/volunteer/teacher (spring 2015) (re)fortify (“radically engaged”) was formed to connect designers, architects, interiors, and product reps with connecting and giving back to their community through an out-of-the-box design competition and physical build. The program begins with the (re)fortify organization working with kids at Breakthrough (www.breakthrough.org) in the Garfield Park area of Chicago to teach them about design, sketching, vision, conception, and presentation using the “blanket fort” as a subject matter. At the end of the 4 week after-school program, the kids have developed a concept for their “dream fort”, which then gets passed along to teams of designers. Those teams turn those concepts into a reality during a build night filled with fun, interaction with the kids, a professionals’ reception, and awards. The biggest kicker - the main medium is donated clothing! After the build, all donations go to Breakthrough or elsewhere for their community efforts. In 2014, our FGM team participated in the first annual (re)fortify Chicago build and won the Kids’ Choice Award. Following this inaugural year in Chicago, several of us joined the (re)fortify organization to help organize, fundraise, teach, and volunteer for the second annual event in 2015. The organization and interest in the event more than doubled and continues to grow. The volunteers are an amazing group of people that are changing the landscape of possibility for these kids and aiding in Breakthrough’s community efforts in Garfield Park. And the kids are a blast!
