A message to all Congratulations spring 2023
Spring Class of 2023:
From ASCSU President Robert Long
Graduates
Congratulations on graduating and moving onto a new chapter in your life. Whether it took you 2 years or 5 years to get your degree, the CSU Community is proud of you all and the sacrifices you made to get where you are. Regardless of if you have a job lined up, moving onto graduate school, or still need time to figure everything out, we are excited to see the impact that you leave on the world as CSU Alumni.
Additionally, upon your graduation, you are all going to evolve to become more respected leaders within the communities you touch. With this leadership come great respect and responsibility that should be valued with the utmost priority to maintain the reputation of being a CSU Ram. The following quote by Ernest Shackleton has dramatically altered the way I view leadership “People will only remember 10 percent of your accomplishments as a leader and 90 percent of how you treated others as a leader.”
When you venture into the unknown feats that the world has to offer, instead of asking yourself “Why is this happening to me?” ask yourself “What is this trying to teach me?”.
I cannot guarantee that it will help your situation, but you’ll leave that challenge a wiser and more refined individual. Additionally, while making you a wiser individual, you in turn also develop a growth mindset and have a more positive outlook at life.
Finally, I’ll leave you all with the same piece of advice that I told the incoming freshman class, do something bold. Renowned businessman Elon Musk has this to say to graduates at the University of Southern California “As you get older, your obligations start to increase and once you have a family, your obligations not only affect the wellbeing of yourself, but your family as well. Before you have those obligations, I would encourage you to take risks now, and do something bold. You won’t regret it.”
Spring Class of 2023, I hope you take at least one of these pieces of advice and carry it into the next (and arguably most important) part of your life. Your laughter, energy, and creativity will be greatly missed, and we hope you don’t stay away from CSU for too long.
All the best,

How to Celebrate Your Graduation
By Annie WeilerYou've made it to graduation, and it's time to revel in your success. Whether you want to party into the night or prefer a cozy night with dinner and a movie, there are tons of ways to commemorate your remarkable achievement. Let us help you figure out how to celebrate!
IT’S PARTY TIME!
Gather your favorite people and throw a party that's uniquely yours! Set up tables, decorate with balloons, and get festive. You could set up a photo booth with fun props, a speaker with your favorite tunes, or a table with your favorite foods to create a delicious spread. With a little planning and a lot of creativity, your graduation party could be a celebration you'll never forget!
SPEND QUALITY TIME
Are traditional graduation parties not your thing? No worries! There are plenty of other ways to celebrate your achievement that reflect your unique interests. Whether you prefer concerts, plays, spa days, slumber parties, brunch, or day trips, it's important to do something that you enjoy. You can invite family, friends, or a significant other to join in on the fun. With a non-traditional celebration, you can avoid the hassle and expenses that come with a party while still spending quality time with those you love.
TRAVEL
Now that you’re out of school, you deserve a break. What better way to unwind than through travel? Whether it's a road trip to a national park, a weekend getaway to the mountains, or a week-long

trip to the coastline, traveling can help you catch up on much-needed rest while letting you check something off your bucket list. This can be especially valuable if you're about to start a new job and want to take some time off before diving into the next chapter of your life.
TREAT YOURSELF
You could take a break from your responsibilities and indulge in some much-needed self-care! Whether that means going on a shopping spree at the mall, driving to your favorite tunes at Horsetooth Reservoir, or making your favorite comfort food before settling in to watch a movie, a day to yourself may be what you need after graduation. This day should be all about what you want to do and what brings you joy.
DO NOTHING
Not everyone feels the need to celebrate their graduation in a big way, and that's OK! For some, simply basking in their accomplishment and going about their daily routine is the way to celebrate. Celebrating is supposed to make you happy, and if not celebrating is what feels right for you, that's perfectly valid. Just make sure to acknowledge the hard work and dedication that went into earning your degree – graduating is no small feat!

4years of changes to campus
Reflecting on the last four years, it's amazing to see how much campus has changed since you first arrived at Colorado State University.
NEW PRESIDENT OF COLORADO STATE
In December 2022, Colorado State University's Board of Governors announced that Amy Parsons would become the institution's 16th president. As an alumnus of CSU herself, Parsons announced her commitment to continuing CSU’s academic excellence, promoting research and
UPGRADE IN BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC PATTERNS
During the 2021-2022 school year, Colorado State University revamped its bike lanes and traffic patterns campus-wide to improve safety and flow for pedestrians and bicyclists alike.
NEW LORY STUDENT CENTER RENOVATIONS
The Lory Student Center, our campus hub, has been renovated! The north end underwent significant renovations in spring 2023. The Lory Student Center is now looking sharper
MASKS NO LONGER NEEDED ON CAMPUS
After two years of masks, CSU allowed students to decide whether to wear masks while attending classes.
CSU SPUR IS COMPLETE
The Hydro building, the final addition to the Colorado State University Spur campus, opened to the public in January 2023. CSU Spur is a one-of-a-kind free educational hub in Denver focused on food, water, and
COLORADO STATE LAGOON GOT A MAKEOVER
The Lory Student Center wasn’t the only campus hotspot to be renovated. Our beloved lagoon, which has been a campus staple since the 1960s, received additional border seating, allowing faculty, staff, and students to sit down while observing its beauty.
THEN BACK AGAIN
Our spring break in 2020 was pretty long, huh? After a year of remote classes, Colorado State University returned to in-person classes.
University – it's a way of life for students, faculty, and staff. Sustainability has continuously proven the foundation of CSU’s academics, research, and service. The University’s unwavering commitment to sustainability consistently ranks among the top sustainable academic institutions in the country.
The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education recognized Colorado State University's sustainability efforts with three consecutive platinum statuses under their Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System, which evaluates the sustainability efforts of 990 campuses worldwide. CSU is the only institution in the world to receive three platinum awards, highlighting its dedication to environmentally friendly efforts. The association also gave CSU a 100% score in curriculum, indicating that the University offers academic courses and employment opportunities that focus on sustainability.
SPRING & SUMMER 2023 GRADUATES
With its platinum ratings, CSU has garnered recognition for its environmental contributions. CSU secured a spot in Sierra Club’s Top 20 Cool Schools 2021, a strong indicator of its sustainable practices. The Princeton Review also included CSU in its 2023 Green College Honor Roll alongside only 31 other schools – out of 713 colleges nationwide. Bee Campus USA also recognized the University for its pollinator-friendly gardens and student managed apiaries in 2018.
These impressive accolades are borne from the University’s sustainability-focused programs and initiatives. One is the Ram Food Recovery Program, which has distributed food to campus communities since 2017 and reduced food waste. To further reduce waste, the Student Sustainability Center recently kickstarted the Patchwork Initiative, an effort to help students repair, instead of discard, clothing. The University also introduced Sustainability Curriculum Innovation Grants, which fund proposals to create new academic courses on sustainability or integrate sustainability into existing ones. CSU doesn’t plan to stop there. Administrators are working on the Climate Action Plan, which aims to make CSU a 100% renewable energy institution by 2030.

Advice TO
NEW GRADUATES
It's normal to feel a little lost on where to start your post-grad life. Many Colorado State University graduates have felt the same way, and it's OK not to have everything figured out right away. Here’s some advice from those who have been in your shoes.
IT’S OK TO NOT HAVE IT FIGURED OUT
When we were younger, we thought adults had everything figured out and knew what they’re doing. The truth is, nobody really does. It's perfectly OK to fly by the seat of your pants and just wing it sometimes. After all, nobody’s perfect.
LEARN TO SAY “NO”
Learning to say “no” is an essential skill. Saying "no" doesn't mean that you're mean or aggressive; in fact, it’s necessary to protect your time and energy. It’s important to be honest with yourself and others by setting boundaries and prioritizing your needs. Taking care of yourself is not selfish, but rather necessary for your well-being.
BE COMFORTABLE WITH BEING UNCOMFORTABLE
Life can be uncomfortable, especially when you take risks, try new things, or meet new people. But feeling uncomfortable is completely normal, and you shouldn't be discouraged by it. So many opportunities come from venturing outside of your comfort zone, so embrace the discomfort and see where it takes you.
FAILURE IS PERFECTLY NORMAL
Failure presents an opportunity to learn and try again. It’s OK to be upset after failing, but don’t dwell on it too long. Staying open to criticism and accepting that you may not always get things right can help you grow. How you handle those failures will ultimately determine your success!
ASK QUESTIONS
Leave your hubris at graduation! Asking questions may feel like you're admitting to ignorance, but it’s a sign that you’re open to learning. No one knows everything, and seeking advice, insights, and information can help you grow. So, ask all your questions, even the ones you’re afraid to ask. It just shows that you’re committed to your development and improving your skills.
SELFCARE IS IMPORTANT
The shift from college life to graduation to full-time work can be a challenge, so it's crucial to take care of yourself. Whether it's trying out that new recipe, firing up a relaxing bubble bath, goofing around with friends, or catching up on some much-needed rest, finding ways to recharge is crucial for your mental and physical health. Self-care isn’t a luxury, but rather a necessity for thriving in your new routine.
CONTINUE LEARNING
Your graduation from college doesn't mark the end of your learning journey. Opportunities to expand your knowledge and skills are available even after graduation, and they don’t have the constraints of traditional academia. Find classes on things you want to learn more about, whether swing dancing, fixing bicycles, or entomology, and check them out! Be open to these opportunities and find ways to continue growing.
BE FLEXIBLE WITH YOUR PLAN S
Nobody’s saying to abandon your career plan, but make sure to be flexible if things don’t go “right.” Life’s bound to throw you a curveball or two– there’s no avoiding that. While that’s scary, keep an open mind, be adaptable, and know that the other side of adversity is often something better.

HOW CSU HELPS STUDENTS AFTER GRADUATION
Colorado State University is committed to ensuring that its alumni have access to all the resources they need to succeed in their personal and professional lives. Whether you need career advice, networking opportunities, or simply want to stay connected with your fellow Rams, CSU has everything you need to continue your success after graduation.
When you purchased your cap and gown, you probably wondered why you should buy the Alumni Association Annual Membership. However, this membership allows you access valuable resources, including top-notch career assistance after graduation. All alumni are eligible for a one-on-one consultation with an alumni career coach, as well as two additional coaching sessions per year. If you purchase the membership, you get to use these services for a full year after your graduation.
If you didn’t utilize the CSU Career Center resources during your tenure at CSU, there's no better time to use them than after graduation. The Career Center provides services like interview preparation and resume editing, which are invaluable to new grads. They support individuals struggling with mental health in their job search and partner with the Pride Center to provide resources for LGBTQIA+ jobseekers. If this sounds appealing to you, good news: career advising
is completely free for alumni. Plus, the University hosts career fairs tailored to alumni. You can find the schedule for upcoming career fairs on the alumni association website.
For those looking for professional development opportunities, CSU has you covered. It offers a series of webinars to alumni, seeking to help graduates in both their personal and professional lives. These webinars cover a range of topics, such as salary negotiations and time management. You can also access past webinar recordings on the alumni association website if you are unable to attend a live session.
Staying connected with other CSU alumni can promote personal and professional growth post-graduation. Fortunately, CSU offers a variety of platforms for graduates to maintain their Ram Pride, no matter where they are in the country. Across the United States, there are 32 Ram Networks, spanning from California to Texas to New York. These networks provide a sense of community and camaraderie for alumni who share Ram Pride. From networking events to community service projects to game watch parties, there are countless opportunities for alumni to connect and engage with their fellow Rams.
CSU’s commitment to students goes far beyond graduation day. As a CSU alumnus, you’ll have access to the resources and support you need to thrive in both your personal and professional life. Whether you want to stay connected with your fellow Rams through one of the 32 Ram Networks or check out the CSU Career Center’s free career advising, there are plenty of opportunities to continue your success long after you've left campus. Don't be afraid to reach out and take advantage of all that CSU has to offer –it’s always here to help.

Job Market Que ions and Answers
Answered by Angela Hayes, Associate Director, Alumni and Online Career EngagementHOW LONG ARE THE CSU CAREER SERVICES AVAILABLE TO ME?
For up to one full year after you graduate, you can access all the Career Center’s services, exactly how you would during your time as a student. This includes drop-ins, appointments, and all events. After one year, you can still access services. Visit alumni.colostate.edu/career-services for more information. Our events are open to alumni. If you would like to attend an event as an alum, please contact Angela Hayes through email to RSVP. Her email is angela.hayes@colostate.edu
IF I DON'T HAVE AN INTERNSHIP LINED UP YET, HOW CAN I SEARCH FOR OPPORTUNITIES NOW THAT I'M NOT ON CAMPUS?
There are many ways for you to search for internships. Here is a comprehensive look at our internship search resources: career.colostate.edu/topic/internship
MY EMPLOYMENT OFFER WAS RESCINDED, WHAT DID I DO WRONG?
It’s quite likely that you did nothing wrong. While it doesn’t happen often, companies will sometimes rescind job offers because they’ve just received new information about their earnings last quarter, the economy or some other factor outside their control and decide that they can no longer offer the job. If your offer is rescinded, ask for feedback about the reason to see if there is something that you can do to guard against that possibility next time. Be very careful to remain positive. If you are still interested in their company, tell them that and ask if there are other positions that might be a fit. Give yourself a day or two to process what happened and then make a plan for moving forward. Resist the urge to post something negative about the company/rescinded job offer on social media. Show your resilience and confidence that you will land a new job.
Then, reach out to your network, former employers, and other companies that you turned down when you took this job. Research companies that you are considering applying at to make sure they are in good financial standing and have not been rescinding job offers and/or conducting layoffs. If you don’t find what you are looking for in a fulltime job, you might consider working with a staffing agency for a shorter project-based position to sharpen your skills and add to your resume.
HOW HAS THE JOB MARKET CHANGED IN THE PAST YEAR?
While the job market was very strong for a good part of this last year, changes in the economy have negatively affected some sectors due to rising inflation, the possibility of a recession and swings in the crypto market. We are certainly seeing some lay-offs and hiring freezes. Banking/ finance, fashion, and blue-chip companies like Peloton, Netflix, Tesla, Meta, and Twitter are conducting layoffs while companies like Uber have plans to scale back hiring. Many of these layoffs are due to a great deal of hiring during the pandemic as companies scaled up their workforces to meet demand. However, there are still currently millions more jobs open than there are qualified people to fill them. This is because other industries are seeing more demand as the pandemic eases. Even those laid off will find it easy to find new jobs. It is still a “seller’s market.”
HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT I WANT TO DO AFTER GRADUATING?
Most people don’t know exactly what they want to do after graduation. The potential mistake (depending on your perspective and the amount of time you have) that I see most often is for a recent student to just take “any” job and see if they like it and it’s a good fit for them. If it isn’t, they quit and then choose another job to try. Another way to go about this process and save a lot of time is to choose four to five things that you might want to do and then set up informational interviews with people who are doing those jobs. Ask them questions to learn more about the job and help determine if it sounds like a good fit for your interests, abilities, and values. Request that they allow you to job shadow to learn even more. You might also do short volunteer or paid projects in your areas of interest to gather more helpful information. Not only will this help you narrow in on your areas of interest, but it’s a great way to network your way into just the right job for you.

What
Says About You
Congratulations, Class of 2023! You’ve earned your degree despite everything that the world has thrown at you. You’ve proven that you’re unstoppable. Take a moment to pat yourself on the back, and celebrate all that you have accomplished. Here are a few things that your graduating in 2023 says about you:
YOU’RE DETERMINED
The class of 2023 has certainly faced its fair share of challenges, including the global, an uncertain job market, and financial doubt. But you didn't let any of that stop you! You persisted and pushed through, proving you're a force to be reckoned with. You know how to take on the world, no matter what it throws your way.
YOU’RE TECHNOLOGICALLY SAVVY
You've become a pro at navigating the digital landscape! From Zoom calls to online lectures, you've conquered it all with your newfound computer skills. Maybe you've even unlocked the secret to fixing the printer when it's acting up (we still can't figure that one out). Employers are going to be lining up to find someone as adaptable and tech-savvy as you.
YOU’RE FLEXIBLE
You've managed to stay cool, calm, and collected even when everything around you was in total chaos. Whether it was navigating online classes, dealing with unexpected roadblocks, or adjusting to sociopolitical changes, you always found a way to adapt and come out on top. That's a super valuable quality to have – not just in the working world, but in life in general.
YOU’RE ENTHUSIASTIC
Despite the crazy obstacles thrown at you, you stayed on track and never lost sight of your goals. It takes serious passion and optimism to push through as you did. Your graduation wasn't a stroke of luck – it was the result of your unbridled enthusiasm for learning and growing.
YOU’RE A HARD WORKER
You’ve proven that you're not afraid to buckle down and get things done, no matter what setbacks come your way. You crushed your studies, stayed motivated through thick and thin, and tackled problems like a pro. No wonder you're walking away with that degree in your hand!
RIC RAC CACTUS
The ric rac cactus is an easy-going and pet-friendly plant! It’s also known as the zig zag cactus or the fishbone cactus because of its squiggly leaf shape. Place it in bright, indirect light and water every 1-2 weeks.
JADE PLANT
The jade plant is a succulent that is native to parts of South Africa. It’s often given as a housewarming gift due to the belief that it brings good luck. Place this plant in bright, indirect light and water every 2-3 weeks.

HOW TO THRIVE AFTER UNIVERSITY HOW TO THRIVE AFTER UNIVERSITY
Congratulations on graduating college and embarking on the next chapter! Feeling a bit lost or unsure of what to do next is totally normal, but don't worry, we're here to help. Here are some tips and tricks to help you thrive in this new part of your life.
NETWORK , NETWORK, NETWORK
The first step to success is networking. You might’ve heard that “who you know is as important as what you know,” and it's true! Your degree can only take you so far. So, get out there, mingle with professionals in your field, be approachable, and polish your LinkedIn profile. The connections you make through networking can help you land exciting opportunities in the future.
KNOW YOUR WORTH
Your college graduation is a massive achievement that deserves recognition! Remember to carry confidence with you in your post-graduation plans. Don't be afraid to know your worth and showcase your capabilities.
EMBRACE A BUDGET
As a new grad, you'll face a lot of expenses with your new salary, including insurance, rent, and gas, which can be overwhelming at first. With a budget, you can determine what expenses are necessary, what you can splurge on, and how much you should save. Not only will it give you financial structure, but it’ll help you plan for the future, such as saving for retirement.
GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP
It’s so important to prioritize getting a good night's sleep. Rest allows you to wake up refreshed and ready to tackle the day ahead. Remember that sleep is like brain fuel, so make sure to aim for a solid eight hours!
EXERCISE IS IMPORTANT
You don't have to spend three hours a day lifting weights at the gym to stay fit. Even quick workouts like a yoga video, a walk around the neighborhood, or a short weights routine can provide excellent benefits. Exercise can improve your health, reduce your stress levels, and release endorphins that leave you feeling great!
THE ART OF COOKING
Cooking is a life skill everyone should master. Preparing delicious, healthy food at home promotes both your health and saves you money. Getting in your veggies, trying out new recipes, and prioritizing your health will set you up for success. But make sure to treat yourself occasionally, whether it's with a cupcake or a takeout meal.
