SIZING & PRICES ROTC cadets from Colorado State University completed their annual game ball relay from Laramie, Wyoming, to Canvas Stadium Wednesday, Nov. 4. ROTC members carried the ball 39 miles to campus in anticipation of the 112th renewal of the rivalry which CSU won 34-24 on Thursday, Nov. 5. The Army ROTC program is led by CSU alum Lt. Col. Matthew Tillman who returned to CSU this fall to serve as the department head of the program. Tillman served 16-plus years in active duty after graduating from CSU in 2004. What will the rest of the academic year look like? By CSU Life staff When classes adjourn on Nov. 20 and Fall Break begins, that will be the last day Colorado State University students will have in-person instruction on campus until January 2021. Campus will remain open, but all classes will be delivered remotely for the last two weeks of Fall semester — Nov. 30-Dec. 11. Finals week — Dec. 14-18 — will also be completely virtual. Students who remain in Fort Collins may need access to CSU resources and spaces. Although the University will remain open to serve students, faculty and staff, some offices may reduce their hours of in-person operations. The Provost’s Office has offered some information on what campus will look like through the end of this highly unusual academic year in May. All of this is current as of the beginning of November; watch SOURCE and your email inbox for updates. Information about the spring 2021 semester also will be posted on the COVID Information and Resources website as details are available: covid.colostate.edu/kb/ plans-for-spring-semester.
Spring Semester
COVID-19 testing
The University intends to continue offering extensive coronavirus testing protocols in the Spring semester, and the testing team will continue making process improvements through winter break and into spring. More about testing, symptom reporting, public health protocols, University operations, trending topics and other COVID-related information and resources can be found at CSU’s COVID Information and Resources website.
President Joyce McConnell has announced that Colorado State University will observe three paid professional development days during the week of Fall Break: Nov. 23, 24, and 25. The University will also be closed as scheduled Nov. 26 and 27. In an email to campus on Nov. 6, McConnell wrote that while CSU is not offering to fund any professional development opportunities, a number of existing university resources are available; the Talent Development website at training.colostate.edu is a great place to start. If you have questions about the opportunities that these days present (e.g. eligibility, timekeeping), you can find answers at the HR COVID-19 FAQ site: hr.colostate.edu/covid-19-human-resources-faqs.
In the spring ‘21 semester, the Provost plans to replicate the percentage of courses offered either in-person or hybrid as during the Fall semester. Course instruction and assessment must continue after Fall Break through the scheduled end of the academic semester. All regular exams and final exams must be administered remotely. In-person exams are not permitted. Technology support will continue to be available to faculty to facilitate remote course delivery. Proctoring for online exams will remain the same as it was for the Fall ‘20 semester: Faculty should continue to use CSU’s existing online proctoring platforms. continued on page 3

Civil and environmental engineering students sample wastewater from one of 17 on-campus collection sites to be tested for teh coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Photo by John Eisele, CSU Photography
CSU team works to slow the spread of COVID-19 By Seré Williams In the classic arcade game Whack-A-Mole, as you slam the rubber mallet down on one mole that rises up, you stay at the ready to quickly knock down the next mole that emerges. Colorado State University experts have developed a similar strategy that relies on quick identification and isolation of individuals on campus infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 to whack the virus down before it spreads—and keep the number of cases they need to contend with manageable at all times. Before students returned to in-person learning in August, CSU had developed a targeted monitoring and testing program built on research by faculty scientists and implemented by a team of on-campus experts. Dr. Heather Pidcoke, the chief medical research officer for the university, has assembled the multi-disciplinary team to manage the university’s rapid response to COVID-19. “It’s made up of experts from across the university, and the point of the team is to figure out what the data means and what to do about it,” she said. The team meets every afternoon and they can then discuss new data, the
appropriate response, and then creates a plan to tackle it. The efficacy of this approach was borne out at the end of September, when wastewater surveillance identified a spike in viral counts from two residence halls, Braiden and Summit. These communities were immediately quarantined and each individual promptly tested. Less than a week later, those infected with the virus were identified and isolated, while the remaining residents returned to classes – and life – as normal. Of the more than 900 students tested, fewer than a dozen tested positive.
Building a baseline CSU has been monitoring students’ health closely since the first day they returned to campus for the Fall semester. During the week before classes began, the university offered testing to every student moving into on-campus housing as well as to every professor and graduate teaching assistant who would be exposed to at least 50 students in a week. Out of the approximately 10,000 tests performed, only 11 came back positive. These students were isolated in quarantine spaces for 14 days. Continue on page 11

CSU announces extra days for Fall Break
Course instruction and delivery
ZING – PRICING
Spring semester will start as originally scheduled — Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021.A full week of Spring Break will be maintained, but four weeks later than originally scheduled: April 12 - 16, 2021. After Spring Break, all course instruction and exams for the remaining three weeks of the semester and finals week will be delivered remotely, just like the final two weeks of the Fall semester. Finals week will remain unchanged — May 10-14. This adjustment will
help eliminate additional risks of exposure for the community that could result from extensive travel during Spring Break. As planned for post-Fall Break, the University will remain open following Spring Break.
