LOCAL HAUNTS

Halloween tours offered for first time at historic Avery House By Samy Gentle

@samy_gentle_ This Saturday evening, the Poudre Landmarks Foundation will host Halloween-themed tours of Fort Collins’ historic 1879 Avery House. According to the Poudre Landmarks Foundation website, the tour will inform guests of historical Halloween facts and traditions, including why Victorians bobbed for apples and how modern trick-or-treating came to be. Tickets are available for $10 on the website to grant guests

admission as well as apple cider and a slice of pumpkin pie. Tour guides will lead guests through the house, “which will be candlelit and decorated for the season, full of objects we associate with Halloween,” said Sarah Tisdale, Poudre Landmarks Foundation board member and Avery House docent for the past six years. Tisdale said the Poudre Landmarks Foundation put on Valentine’s Day-themed tours in 2019, but this is the first year they have held a Halloween event. The Halloween-themed tours of the

Avery House will begin every halfhour from 6-8 p.m. While many Halloween events are generally for children, the Avery House tours will be oriented toward an older audience. An alternative event for families with children is the trick-or-treat event held at the Avery House on Halloween night. Tour guides will be dressed in full costume and handing out candy from 5-7 p.m., according to the Poudre Landmarks Foundation. “For adults, it’s often limited to costume parties at bars,” Tisdale said. “We wanted to give adults interested in local history and the community a place to go and have fun.” The Halloween tours of the Avery House will operate with COVID-19 procedures in place, according to the website. Procedures include limiting the number of guests in each tour as well as requiring masks at all times inside the house. Additionally, Tisdale said the pumpkin pie and cider will be served in to-go containers so guests can enjoy them in the comfort of their own home. Tisdale said the Poudre Landmarks Foundation chose the Avery House as the venue for the tours because of its unique history. “The Victorians helped shape many aspects of Halloween as

we know them today, so it’s a nice tie-in with our Victorian-era home,” Tisdale said. Built in 1879 by Franklin Avery, who lived in the home with his family, the Avery House is on the corner of North Meldrum Street and West Mountain Avenue. According to the Poudre Landmarks Foundation, members of the Avery family owned the house until they sold it in 1962. Tisdale said the house served as college student housing after that. While it is an old building with a long history, the Avery House is not famous for being a haunted house.

“One of the local ghost tours sometimes stops out front of the house and likes to share stories of a figure in white seen in one of the upstairs windows,” Tisdale said. “But I’ve been alone in the house many times and honestly have never experienced anything.” While probably not haunted, Tisdale said the Avery House has a “welcoming atmosphere” and “(the Poudre Landmarks Foundation is) really excited about these tours.” Reach Samy Gentle at news@collegian.com.

GHOSTLY GIVING

Houska Automotive to host Halloween-themed blood drive By Piper Russell

@piperrussell10 Houska Automotive, an auto repair shop in Fort Collins, will host their annual Halloween-themed blood drive Oct. 29 from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the UCHealth Garth Englund Blood Center — Fort Collins. Donations will take place inside the donor room and in two mobile blood buses. Donors are encouraged to come in costume. Donors also need to be 18 years old or above — 17-year-olds are allowed with a parent’s permission, but all ages are required to show photo identification. “It kind of turns into a party rather than just a regular blood drive,” said Dennis Houska, second-generation owner and current president of Houska Automotive. “So a lot of people come in costume and (are) just out to have a good time.” The blood drive is a tradition for Houska Automotive, and this year will be the 20th blood drive they’ve done. Dennis Houska began donating blood at the Garth Englund Blood Center in 1978. LJ Houska, vice president and general manager of Houska Automotive, said his father, Dennis, started the blood drive after an experience donating

bone marrow received by an 8-year-old boy. LJ Houska explained that it was this donation that started it all, and the blood drives began from there.

“It’s such a good feeling to be a part of it and know that you’re helping other people out.” DENNIS HOUSKA PRESIDENT OF HOUSKA AUTOMOTIVE

Since it began, Houska Automotive’s Halloween blood drive has accumulated over “680 blood donations and new donors,” according to a press release emailed to The Collegian. Connie Hanrahan, founder of Mantooth Marketing & Events Company, said the goal is to fill all the sign-up spots, which they’re close to doing this year. As of Oct. 26, there were 89 donors signed up. “This event is always successful,” Hanrahan said. “If we have

only one donor, we’ve made the difference in someone else’s life.” Hanrahan has helped promote the blood drive for the past 15 years. “The Houska (Zombie) Blood Drive means a lot to me,” Hanrahan said. “I used to just enjoy getting in costume and showing up to give blood. A few years ago, I saw firsthand how important it is to have blood on hand for those in need. This is a wonderful community event that the Houska family is so committed to, and I’m grateful for their commitment.” People who donate a pint of blood will receive a gift card for a pint of ale at CooperSmith’s Pub & Brewery, and all participants will have a chance to win a free set of four Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company tires. Participants can sign up on Houska Automotive’s SignUpGenius. Due to the pandemic, participation in the blood drive requires masks and appointments. “One donation can save up to three people’s lives,” Dennis Houska said. “It’s such a good feeling to be a part of it and know that you’re helping other people out. We just want to be able to pass that on to other people and give them the opportunity to donate and have that good feeling too.” Reach Piper Russell at news@ collegian.com.

HALLOWEED

Cannabis-infused Halloween cookies for a spooky night in By Lindsay Barker @lindsaybarkerj Pair these cannabis-infused cookies with your favorite Halloween movie for a night of stoned spooky enjoyment. Homemade edibles can be made a few different ways using flower, concentrate or tincture. I decided to use concentrate for this recipe and picked up a gram of Organic Alternatives’ Alien Sweet Treat wax. It’s an indica strain that tested at 78.09% THC. If you want to skip a few steps like I did, then you can just buy a package of Betty Crocker sugar cookie mix along with eggs and butter. If you prefer making sugar cookies from scratch, go for it. I also made a trip to The Cupboard in Old Town to pick out some fun Halloween cookie cutters. The most important part of this process is preparing the concentrate by decarboxylating it. Decarboxylation is a process in which heat turns the compound THCA into psychoactive THC. This is critical if you want to actually get high from your edibles. If the THC isn’t activated beforehand, it won’t have the same effects. To decarb your concentrate, choose the amount you want to use and place it on either tin foil or parchment paper in a pan or other oven-safe dishware. I decided to use a half gram of wax in my cookies. Set the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit

and allow the concentrate to sit for as long as it takes to stop bubbling — usually around 10 minutes.

“I’m pretty sure the decarboxylation process worked because I ate two cookies and slept like a rock.” At this point, you’ll want to melt one stick of butter either in a pan or the microwave. After doing this, scrape the decarboxylated concentrate into the melted butter and mix. You can also put the melted concentrate in the freezer for a few minutes to make it easier to transfer into the butter. Whether you decide to freeze the concentrate or not, the results are the same: cannabutter. Now on to making the cookie dough. Following the Betty Crocker recipe, preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and mix the melted cannabutter with an egg and dry cookie mix. If you’re making cut-out cookies like I did, you’re also supposed to add three tablespoons of flour. If you opt out of cookie cutters, no extra flour is necessary. After mixing all of the ingredients,

$10.99

After letting the cookie dough sit, roll it out and use whatever cookie cutters you prefer. I cut out some whimsical ghosts and crooked witches’ hats. Let the cookies bake for eight minutes or until the edges are golden brown. To roughly calculate how many milligrams of THC are going to be in each cookie, you divide the total milligrams of THC from above by the total number of cookies. My cookies had 390.45 mg, and I made 19 cookies, so each cookie had around 20.6 mg of THC. Of course, I had to try my homemade edibles to see if I

you can let the dough sit in the freezer for a few minutes to make it easier to use the cookie cutters. I used a half gram of wax for this recipe and calculated how many milligrams of THC would be in the cookie dough total. This is done by multiplying the weight of concentrate in grams by the THC percentage in decimal form and multiplying that number by 1,000 to convert to milligrams. My cookie dough had 390.45 mg of THC total. The calculation would look like: 0.7809 THC x 0.5 g = .39045 THC/g x 1,000 = 390.45 mg.

actually did this whole thing correctly. I’m pretty sure the decarboxylation process worked because I ate two cookies and slept like a rock. I chose an indica strain, which would explain why I slept so well, but if you’re looking for more of an energizing experience, I would suggest a hybrid or sativa. I ate another cookie the next day and took my dog on a walk about an hour later, feeling the full effects while I stared at the changing fall colors. Reach Lindsay Barker at cannabis@ collegian.com.

The scariest thing about Halloween? The statistics By Cat Blouch @blouchcat

Editor’s Note: All opinion section content reflects the views of the individual author only and does not represent a stance taken by The Collegian or its editorial board. Trigger warning: This article discusses the topic of sexual assault. From witches to ghosts to blood-sucking demons, Halloween is a holiday of fear. It’s what sells costumes of all our favorite pop-culture monsters. It’s what gets us going to the theaters for the newest horror films during the spooky season. Fear is the nucleus of Halloween, but the scariest part is not the films or the costumes — it’s the statistics. Halloween is my favorite holiday. I love everything about the season, from the pumpkin carving to the scary movies to the parties, which is why it is so upsetting to

point out that Halloween has a sexual assault problem. Halloween takes place during a time when sexual assault on college campuses is more prevalent.

“The culture around Halloween can lend itself to environments that increase the risk of sexual assault.”

“More than 50% of college sexual assaults occur in either August, September, October or November,” according to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. This coupled with the fact that the culture around Halloween can lend itself to environments that increase the risk of sexual assault makes the issue all the more concerning.

While the holiday may be known for some of the more lighthearted traditions, on a college campus it is associated with parties. NEWS10 ABC suggests adults between 18 and 34 years old are the most prevalent Halloween celebrators and alcohol is frequently associated with these celebrations. When we look at the statistics regarding the role alcohol plays in sexual assault on campus, this raises concern. According to alcohol.org, “At least 50% of student sexual assaults involve alcohol” and “in one-third of sexual assaults, the aggressor is intoxicated.”

“It becomes much easier for someone to perpetrate a crime when they feel as though they have some sense of anonymity.”

When we talk specifically about party culture and how it plays a role in this phenomenon, it’s worth noting that “students in fraternities are more likely to perpetrate sexual assault than non-fraternity men,” according to alcohol.org. Not only are people partying more on Halloween, but they’re partying in costume, which may add to the risk factor. According to a study conducted for The Independent, 55% of men believed “the more revealing the clothes a woman wears, the more likely it is that she will be harassed or assaulted.” Additionally, Halloween is a time that makes hiding one’s identity socially acceptable, as anyone can wear a costume that obstructs their identity. It becomes much easier for someone to perpetrate a crime when they feel as though they have some sense of anonymity. Colorado State University even released a statement regarding the dangers of Halloween: “Our University (Victim) Assistance Team and Women and Gender

Advocacy Center report that they learn of more sexual assaults than usual occurring during the week of Halloween,” the CSU Public Safety Team said in a 2017 statement. I am by no means trying to discourage you from celebrating Halloween. Rather, I want everyone to be informed so we can mitigate risk as much as possible. I echo the sentiments of the CSU Public Safety Team. Here are some suggestions to keep in mind: ■ Trust your instincts, and if something doesn’t seem right, leave. ■ Travel in groups or use the buddy system. ■ If you are drinking, know your limits. Do not take drinks from someone you don’t know and trust. Staying informed and making safe decisions is an effective way to help you have a season full of more treats than tricks. Stay safe this Halloween. Reach Cat Blouch at letters@ collegian.com.

SERIOUSLY SCARY

Your very own spooky Halloween itinerary

GRAPHIC ILLUSTRATION BY TRIN BONNER THE COLLEGIAN

By Bella Eckburg @yaycolor

Editor’s Note: This is a satire piece from The Collegian’s opinion section. Real names and the events surrounding them may be used in fictitious/semi-fictitious ways. Those who do not read the editor’s notes are subject to being offended. It’s spooky season, and that means it’s time to do some spooky shit with your friends. Grab your mug, fill it to the brim with warm apple cider, settle in and grab a pen — you definitely want to take notes. I present to you the itinerary for your Halloween evening. As autumn envelops our community and the chilly air stings your nostrils, you want to have one thing down pat — your costume. In the wise words of Cardi B, “a hoe never gets cold,” and that’s something you and your ghoulfriends should keep in mind. It doesn’t matter where your psychic intuition takes you —

you can always “slut it up.” Sexy farmer, sexy corn, sexy cow — the list goes on. Soon enough, the whole barnyard will be entering a hoe phase. Now that’s the spirit of the season, isn’t it? After all, autumn is cuffing season. After you’ve had a night full of more tricks than treats, get out your ferociously pungent Bath & Body Works candles, girlies! It’s time to summon demons. Ouija boards are easy to get; they’re literally sold by Hasbro, a toy company. As you all hold hands and open the door between our world and the next, it’s recommended that you also surround yourself in mirrors just to get the full effect. Now, I feel like I’m losing you, but there are no bad vibes at girls’ night. By the time the girl to your right begins writhing with the spirit of holy hell, it might be time to get some fresh air. Say goodbye with the planchette, and blow out your candles one by one. At this point, the aggressive thudding of footsteps in the attic is getting a little annoying, so let’s go shopping — er, grave

robbing. I mean, it’s 2021: Stop engaging with fast fashion because it’s literally killing the Earth. Get thrifty, bitch.

“Haunted dolls make for a great conversation starter, especially when the dolls start the conversation for themselves.” Listen, we’re not doing anything gross; we’re just borrowing. Chill out. When life gives you a shovel and student loans, you dig, baby. Obviously, the girl with the shortest nails will be tasked with digging, so maybe plan ahead on that one. Speaking of thrifting, have you ever wanted to get a pet but you’re conflicted because you live in an apartment with two roommates

who don’t want to deal with dog hair? Haunted dolls, dude. You can find them on eBay or in a thrift store — think of it as pet practice. Plus, it could help you with redecorating your room in the middle of the night, which keeps your life interesting. Sure, maybe your keys will go missing or your home will become riddled with cold spots, but again, these suggestions for your spooky schedule are not for wimps. Haunted dolls make for a great conversation starter, especially when the dolls start the conversation for themselves. After all, aren’t we all just souls trapped in a flesh vessel carrying our disembodied voices? It’s not the demon’s problem that it chose a Raggedy Ann doll as its vessel — 2021 is all about gingers. Also, yes, it helps that gingers have no souls and therefore ample space for a demon to fill that sulking void. Talk about roommates, am I right? I just hope that demon can cover half of your rent. Once you feel like you’ve had your fill of spooktastic fun, it’s

time to settle in for some ghost stories. Personally, I like to call my cousin in maximum security prison for a little ambiance in the background. Nothing feels scarier than the sound of murderers yelling through the receiver. After y’all settle in, you have the option to cast all of the demons out of your house, but I don’t know why someone would do that. Living life on the edge with a few ghosts doesn’t seem like a major issue, especially if you’re actually committed to seeing the season through. Ever heard of cabin fever? Demons get that too. No one wants to hang out in shitty weather, and I’m sure they’ll leave on their own to head back to their home base in Florida. We all know Florida is a portal to hell, and the heat sure is enticing after spending your days possessing the innocent. Have the spookiest of Halloweens, and stay safe — but not too safe because where’s the fun in that? Reach Bella Eckburg at letters@ collegian.com.

Terrifying tales from the tunnels of Fort Collins By JD Meltzner

@jd_meltzner Editor’s Note: All opinion section content reflects the views of the individual author only and does not represent a stance taken by The Collegian or its editorial board. Fort Collins, incorporated all the way back in 1873, is not young, and as such, it has quite a lot of lore surrounding it. While some of these local legends may not dabble in the macabre, many are tales of haunted buildings and stories of ghosts roaming the town. However, there’s just as much paranormal activity going on beneath the streets of Fort Collins as there is above.

“One of the most haunted sections of the underground network is a long stretch of tunnel that snakes underground, leading to an old Cold War bunker.” That’s right — a tunnel network runs under the City — a fact unknown to many, except for Lori Juszak, founder of Fort Collins

Tours. Juszak has been exploring the paranormal happenings around Fort Collins for several years with her tour company, even publishing a book on the subject titled “Ghosts of Fort Collins.” Surprisingly, we know very little about the origin and construction of Fort Collins’ tunnel network. Juszak said that even though the history surrounding much of the underground area is cloudy, historians like herself “assume that much of the space had to do with banking and bootlegging.” However, I didn’t come to Juszak for a history lesson. I came for creepy tales of hauntings and ghostly figures roaming the tunnels of Fort Collins, and I assure you, I was not disappointed. One of the most haunted sections of the underground network is a long stretch of tunnel that snakes underground, leading to an old Cold War bunker. Juszak said on her tours, “many people have experienced having their hair pulled” or “having cold, clammy hands grab at their ankles” while traversing this stretch of tunnel. Juszak explained how this stretch of tunnel has also seen occurrences of electronic voice phenomenon, which is the recording of seemingly unexplained voices on tape. Even as a paranormal skeptic, I must admit this is some compelling evidence for the existence of a haunted tunnel. Beyond the Cold War bunker tunnel, there is also an underground area beneath the Museum of Art Fort Collins in Old Town

with a spooky past of its own. Juszak explained how the area where the museum stands now used to be a cemetery in the 1860s. When the land was sold and a post office was being constructed, “the contractor hired to do the work claimed he would remove and relocate the bodies,” Juszak said. “However, after the post office was completed, he stated that he only removed six bodies, and we know there (were) many more that were never relocated.” The presence of skeletons creeping just below the museum’s foundation is already an unsettling thought, but the story gets creepier. “From time to time, when excavations are being done … for plumbing and other things, … they find bones,” Juszak said. She also said the majority of the centuriesold bodies found are under the fountains, right below “where all the children play in the water today.” Juszak said employees of both the museum and the old post office have recounted hearing old music from the 1860s playing on the top floor of the building accompanied by the sound of ghostly footsteps dancing along to the tune. The tunnels were also used as a transportation system for dead bodies, with one area being connected to what would have been the old town morgue. Juszak said the reasoning behind this was that dead bodies in the 1800s were covered in wax and had to be transported underground to avoid melting in the sun, which would reveal the grotesque corpse beneath.

One of the tunnels under Fort Collins. PHOTO COURTESY OF LORI JUSZAK

Between haunted bunkers, partially excavated cemeteries and a dead body highway, even a skeptic must admit the tunnels under Fort Collins have an air of spookiness about them. Actually, “an air of spookiness” is a bit of an understatement — these tunnels are downright terrifying.

For those braver than I, visit the Fort Collins Tours website to schedule your own date with the spooky world dwelling below the streets we walk. Reach JD Meltzner at letters@ collegian.com.

Halloween is where the creative excels. Coming up with fancy, funny, spicy, scary or just weird costumes can be easy and fun. However, when your creativity is lacking for whatever reason, it can be stressful trying to come up with a costume for a party, contest, night out on the town or even a small get-together. Well, the sports desk has people who need a little help coming up with ideas covered with five sports-themed Halloween costumes.

1. Flint Tropics basketball team — group

Getting your group to dress up as the Flint Tropics is a classic. You do not need much, but you will need white short shorts, a Flint Tropics jersey (and if you have ever been to the Student Recreation Center basketball gym or a high school football/basketball game, you know there are a lot of these around), orange sweatbands, white high socks and a pair of white Chuck Taylor All Stars. You can likely buy the entire uniform from somewhere, but this costume is also easy with everyday items from home and $20 at your local sporting goods store.

If you do this, coordinate who you will be so not everyone walks in as Jackie Moon — and also do not get in a fight with who gets to be Moon.

2. Dynamic duo, big three or super team — group

Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant; Nikola Jokić, Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr.; Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant and Draymond Green. These are some examples of great team-ups in the NBA, but it is never a bad idea to dress up as your favorite players in a group. Plus, if your group has several different jerseys, you can be an all-star team or a coed super team. This makes for a quick lastminute option if you’re late to finding a costume and are on a budget.

3. Marshawn Lynch and Skittles — solo/duo

If you saw this header and wondered if this idea popped into my head because Marshawn Lynch was on the Manning Cast, you are correct. But Lynch, even while he is not in the NFL, is quite a personality. It is no secret that Lynch loves Skittles, and they are quite special to his Beast Mode days. You can do this costume solo or collab with someone. Either way, all

you need is a Lynch jersey and a bag of Skittles or someone to dress up in a Skittles costume (you can buy a Skittles costume, dress up all colorful with a white “S” on the shirt or something else creative).

4. LaMelo Ball’s neon yellow outfit

If you want to be the center of attention at whatever Halloween event you are at, this is the way to do it. What do you need for this costume? Just a bunch of neon-bright clothing, sunglasses and heavy black boots.

5. The Slim Reaper

Durant has possibly the best nickname in sports — and it just so happens to fit in with the theme of Halloween. You can go simple or go all out here. If you go simple, all you need is a Durant jersey, and you can tell people the punchline. Or get a KD jersey, put on a black hooded robe, get a scythe and boom, you are the real Slim Reaper (minus two NBA championships and NBA Finals MVP Awards). There are a bunch of great ideas to dress up as sports figures and teams, and hopefully this list helps you come up with something if you are struggling. Reach Tyler Meguire at sports@collegian.com.

By Michael Giles @michaelrenee10 As Halloween approaches, we want to shed light on the superstitious side of sports that frequently gets skipped over. A lot goes into sports, including tireless hours of training, determination and strength; however, rarely denoted are the superstitions some teams partake in before a game. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a superstition is “a widely held but irrational belief in supernatural influences, especially as leading to good or bad luck or a practice based on such a belief.” Superstitions are oftentimes considered irrational practices done before or during a game that are attributed to why a sports team did so well or not the best during a game. These superstitions turn into repeated practices or rituals before a game for success. Below is a list of some sports superstitions you may not have known about these specific fall sports.

1. Baseball superstitions

One of the most common rituals practiced in baseball is that players will sleep with their bats for better luck the night before a game. The baseball bat is a baseball player’s most precious device to play the game (second to their helmet for safety). In a superstitious way, this will bless their bat before going onto the field to take on a game the next day. This practice can also help end a streak of bad hits or misses or help a player keep their incredible hitting streak. Other baseball superstitions include: • Placing gum on the back of baseball caps before a game • Stepping on one of the bases at the end of an inning before leaving the field

2. Basketball superstitions

One of the greatest basketball players of all time, Michael Jordan, is a very trendy topic when it comes to superstitions in basketball. Jordan would often wear his University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill shorts under his Chicago Bulls shorts during their games to increase their luck of winning. LeBron James also practices slapping chalk powder on his hands and tossing it in the air. Other basketball superstitions include: • Wiping the soles of shoes before a game • Wearing lucky headbands

3. Soccer superstitions

Some soccer teams believe that keeping the same bench seating arrangements is vital in order to continue a winning streak or to generate luck for their team. Keeping similar circumstances as the ones that happened during a great game is essential for maintaining superstitions. Other soccer superstitions include: • Players not washing their socks from winning games • Not changing winning underwear Finally, the actual benefit of superstition or ritual for a player is the boost in confidence and sense of control it brings, so if a professional athlete believes practicing a certain action or behavior will improve their performance, they should do so. Ranking the ridiculous but iconic ‘Halloweentown’ movies By Maddy Erskine

@maddyerskine_ For all the ‘90s and early2000s kids, the Halloweentown franchise was the ultimate movie series to watch in October. If you didn’t own the DVDs, you may have been like me and taped each movie when it came on what is now Freeform’s 31 Nights of Halloween. Before jumping into ranking the movies, it’s time for a little synopsis of Halloweentown. Marnie Piper finds out she and her family are witches in the first movie. Her mother, Gwen Piper, has kept this a secret in order to protect her children. However, Gwen’s mother, Aggie Cromwell, has her heart set on training Marnie as a witch. Aggie is inarguably the coolest grandmother due to her chaotic and whimsical nature. Her home is in Halloweentown, which is a world for monsters, witches and other immortal creatures to live happily and without the judgment of mortals. As an older sibling, I really wish I could say Marnie is the smart one — but she is not. This series would have ended halfway through the first movie if she didn’t have help from her younger siblings, Dylan and Sophie Piper. Now that we are caught up, let’s hop into ranking and reviewing this iconic franchise. Beware of the many spoilers this review contains.

1. ‘Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge’ (2001)

It is rare that a sequel surpasses the original movie, but “Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge” is simply the most iconic of the Halloweentown films due to its elite level of humor. To start, it is absolutely hilarious how quickly Marnie gives away her family secrets to the cute boy, “Kal,” she met a few minutes ago. After just defeating Kalabar, you would think she would not let a stranger named Kal — short for Kalabar Jr., but Marnie doesn’t know that — enter her grandmother’s room and definitely be careful not to let him steal Aggie’s spell book. However, the spell book is stolen, and somehow, Marnie does not even suspect Kal, so they travel to Halloweentown to investigate and discover the whole town is under the “gray spell.” This spell basically just turns everyone into humans and makes them very, very boring. Then, we get introduced to the best Halloweentown character of all time: Gort. Gort and his crankiness are essential to the movie despite

not being at all essential to the plot. All lost items from both worlds end up in his smelly, messy house. Neither of Aggie’s spell books are there, though. We then have another iconic moment when the spell is reversed because Marnie accidentally says the spell backward. We soon learn the spell is simply “apart” and she had said “trap a.” I hope the writers felt really proud of themselves for that one. To top the movie off, we learn that Kal’s dad is Kalabar (duh), and the dad he has in the mortal world who has been flirting with Gwen the entire movie is a golem made out of frogs, which explains the frog costume and lime ice cream. Peak comedy.

2. ‘Halloweentown’ (1998)

The reason “Halloweentown” falls short of its sequel is simply because our characters are just starting their adventures. They don’t know how to use their powers much beyond Sophie’s legendary floating cookie moment as an accidental act of rebellion to no cookies before dinner. I cannot ignore the superiority of Dylan’s jokes and questioning of Halloweentown as a whole. The movie would lack all comedy if Dylan was not there to question the logic of this illogical place. After sneaking off to Halloweentown, the kids soon discover the town is in danger and it’s up to them to save it. The best part of this movie is exploring Halloweentown for the first time with Marnie, Dylan and Sophie. It’s also important to note that the demon threatening Halloweentown ends up being Kalabar, the mayor of the town and Gwen’s ex-boyfriend. It comes as no surprise to viewers but somehow a huge surprise to most of Halloweentown.

3. ‘Halloweentown High’ (2004)

The cast of “Halloweentown High” is absolutely iconic. Not only do we have Lucas Grabeel, best known for playing Ryan Evans in “High School Musical,” as Ethan Dalloway, but the absolute smokeshow Finn Wittrock made his film debut as Cody in this movie. The best part about this movie is Aggie’s inability to teach any classes as a substitute teacher. Skipping past the entire elaborate plot about the Knights of the Iron Dagger in this movie, the carnival scene allows this sequel to be significantly better than its successor, “Return to Halloweentown.” Nothing is more iconic than the transfer students from Halloweentown trying to show the

GRAPHIC ILLUSTRATION BY LEE BILLIOT THE COLLEGIAN

mortals that immortals are peaceful and normal by creating the lamest haunted house of all time. To finish it off, Marnie has a happily-ever-after moment with her love interest, Cody, who is not even mentioned in the following and final movie.

4. ‘Return to Halloweentown’ (2006)

For the sake of reviewing the movie itself, we are going to ignore the incredibly confusing and heartbreaking recasting of Marnie.

“Return to Halloweentown” is basically just a knock-off Harry Potter movie with a bunch of plot holes. Magic is banned on campus, but everyone constantly uses magic. To fully understand the plot of this movie, I would have needed my own copy of Halloweentown’s Witch University handbook — which Marnie clearly did not even skim before attending. One of the worst parts of this movie is the undeniable cheesiness of the Sinister Sisters

and the Dominion. Despite great outfits, they have no backstory and are obvious plot devices. Luckily, the movie is saved by the fact that Gwen forced Dylan to attend the university and to keep an eye on his sister. Of course, Gwen’s failing real estate business and bizarre ways of communicating with her kids added to this. I think my favorite moment was when she appeared in the washing machine to talk to Marnie. Reach Maddy Erskine at entertainment@collegian.com.

LOCAL HAUNTS

5 ways to support Fort Collins this spooky season By Ivy Secrest @ivysecrest When fall hits, just about all you want to do is cozy up with some goodies under a fuzzy blanket and watch scary movies until you’re given the magical gift of Thanksgiving break. Even if scary movies aren’t your aesthetic, there’s the warmth of pumpkin-flavored goodies and community-based activities to look forward to once the leaves start to fall. With the brisk breeze and cold weather comes harvests and a million activities to accompany the cozy vibes. Here are five ways you can enjoy the fall while supporting your beloved Fort Collins community.

1. Treat yourself

What are the tricks without the treats? No fun, really, and at FoCo Cafe, you can buy treats, and the only trick is helping out those in need. You can preorder Halloween cookies, truffles and more until Oct. 27, and for every package you buy, a separate package goes to “community members in need” — who hasn’t earned a delicious pack of cookies this year?

2. Show the community a little love

Go see a show at The Lyric. Located at 1209 N. College Ave., The Lyric is hosting several spooky events from Oct. 27-31. It is the perfect place to bring your friends for one spectacularly spooky night out and do anything from watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show to attending the Spooky Cool Kids Club. (yes, that second one is meant for little kids, but who doesn’t embrace their inner child on Halloween?)

3. Get something to carve

Go get some pumpkins! In Fort Collins, you are surrounded by several local farms that are happy to cater to your gourd-related

needs. Go to The Bartels Farm or Something from the Farm. These locally operated and family-run businesses are available through the holiday and are excellent businesses to support while indulging in your spooky season must-haves.

4. Learn about the spookiness

If you’re an academic, Colorado State University has created the perfect event for you. Attend history professor Adam Thomas’ lecture on the architectural elements of haunted houses; “The Architectural Elements of Spookiness: A Halloween Lecture” is just the thing for horror history fanatics. You can attend in person Oct. 29 at Willard O. Eddy Hall in room 100 or virtually.

5. Spend wisely

If the main appeal of fall for you is investing in a cozy wardrobe, finishing up homeimprovement and decorative projects or just going out and enjoying Old Town with friends on a yellow-and-orange painted backdrop, then check out the All For Fall Downtown Fort Collins event. Round up your purchase to the nearest dollar at participating businesses during the month of October, and your fun fall outing will directly support nonprofits that help strengthen the Fort Collins community. Though December seems to get all the hype for being the season of giving, Fort Collins certainly puts forth the effort to care yearround. Enjoy the spooky season by supporting your community. Whether it be giving treats to those in need, supporting local farms, supporting CSU or even just rounding up the cost of your new sweater from Kansas City Kitty, you have the power to spread the spookiness. WITCHY WARDROBE

7 stress-free costumes to try out this Halloween By Ivy Secrest

@ivysecrest Halloween comes around way too fast to pull off the extravagant costume you likely came up with the day after Halloween last year. With the stress of courses and work (or just life), it can feel impossible to keep up. Additionally, extravagant costumes often feel like a strain on your wallet, especially if you’re living off your part-time job income or student loans. Here are some easy costumes to ensure you’re participating in the holiday with minimal stress.

1. Ghost

An obvious go-to for Halloween is to repurpose those sheets. Get some scissors, cut out some holes and go as a ghost this Halloween. You can even make it a throwback to last year’s ghost photo shoot trend by adding some black sunglasses to the ensemble.

2. Toga time

If you’re not willing to cut into your sheet, you can simply throw it over your shoulder and tie it around your waist with rope or even shoelaces to form the perfect base for any Greek/ Roman inspired outfit. Whether it’s a Greek god, fallen hero or Julius Caesar, you can turn your toga into a fantastic costume. (I recommend Dionysus. Who doesn’t want to be the god of wine and general partying?)

3. Trashy tourists

Another simply hysterical and easy costume is trashy tourists. Run over to the nearest thrift store and gather any abandoned tourist T-shirts you can find, cut off those sleeves, wear tacky shorts and grab a Hawaiian shirt. Boom! You are officially posing as every Disneyland Park employee’s worst nightmare. You can even take it to another level by adding a suitcase to the look. Tip: This can double as the carrier of all goodies for the evening or even a motel minibar because, really, what’s trashier?

4. Caught in a tornado

Gather some hairspray, wire and sewing materials and you can easily make yourself appear as if you’re caught in a storm. A wired-back tie to look like it’s blowing in the wind, leaves on the clothes and in the hair and hair sprayed in wacky directions will create the perfect illusion. This makes an excellent group costume for photoshoots.

5. Witch

Get your best-looking black attire: dress, skirt, cute top, formal button-up — whatever makes you feel bewitching. Add dark eyeliner and spooky makeup, plus a witch hat (easily found in Target, Claire’s, Walmart and drug store costume sections), and there you have a classic and flattering costume.

6. Risky business

While this one may feel a little overdone, it’s so much fun to do, and really, who cares about being basic anymore? Sacrificing your comfort for trends is so pre-pandemic. Go get some black undergarments, a white button-up and some sunglasses, and be a little risky.

7. Fairy

Connect with your inner child; get your favorite fancy, sparkly outfit and add some fairy wings. You can make wings at home with cardboard or grab some from the nearest superstore. The beauty of this simple costume is you can be the fairy of anything. A nature fairy, a water fairy — think of a friend of Tinker Bell and run with it. Magic-inspired makeup and flower crowns also add to the ‘fit. If all else fails and nothing on this list appeals to you, pick your favorite item in your wardrobe and build off it. The most important part of Halloween is feeling good in your own skin, so pick something you feel good in and get creative. Reach Ivy Secrest at entertainment@ collegian.com.

Estudiantes en KSCSU crean podcasts únicos y ganan experiencia By Anna Jelden Plants can be a great way to decorate your home, apartment, or give life and vibrance to a dull space. Being a plant parent may seem intimidating if you don’t know where to start. However, there are many houseplants that require little maintenance and can thrive in a variety of conditions.

CHINESE EVERGREEN Aglaonema

Plant Bio The Chinese Evergreen is native to Southeast Asia and is one of few plants that thrive in low light conditions. Their wide range of colorful varieties and easygoing nature make them popular for first-time plant owners. They’re known for their beautiful variegated leaves, which can sport colors like neon pink or bright white. This plant can even grow under fluorescent lighting, making it ideal for indoors or office spaces. As a tropical native, this plant appreciates a humid environment. This plant is forgiving about an inconsistent watering schedule. It isn’t very picky when it comes to potting soil, but try and use one that has good drainage. This plant is toxic to pets and humans.

Prefers medium to low indirect light, does not like direct sunlight Water every 1-2 weeks, soil should dry out between waterings Avoid placing near cold drafts or air conditioners, can be misted once a week

Did You Know? Give your plants a spa day! All houseplants will collect dust on their leaves and this can make it difficult for them to photosynthesize. Smaller plants can be sprayed down in a sink or bathtub. Plants with large leaves can be wiped down with a damp cloth and a little bit of dish soap. As an extra treat, your plants can be sprayed with neem oil spray to keep pests away.
