CSU vets give bucket list puppy new chance at life By Charlotte Lang @chartrickwrites

What’s better than checking “get 100 hugs” off of your bucket list? Getting a second chance at life. Logan, a foster puppy diagnosed with pulmonic valve dysplasia, is coming to Colorado State University where the Veterinary Teaching Hospital

believes they may be able to perform a surgery to repair Logan’s heart. Logan became a viral story after Rescued Hearts Northwest posted their hopes of allowing him to “experience anything and everything a puppy would ever want to experience,” creating a bucket list for the puppy. After receiving one preliminary procedure that didn’t go as

expected, Logan will be returning in April for another surgery to try and save his life. Associate Professor of cardiology Dr. Brian Scansen reached out to Rescued Hearts Northwest after families of patients he had treated reached out to him with links to Logan’s story and questions about if there was anything he thought could be done to help the dog.

“I contacted the rescue via email and asked to review (Logan’s) medical records,” Scansen said. “Following that, I discussed his case with them via phone and suggested there may be treatment options available based on what I could determine from their records.” Scansen said that Logan has a severely malformed heart. The right side of his heart has two

valves that formed abnormally— the pulmonary valve and the tricuspid. The more severe of the two, the tricuspid valve, will require open-heart surgery to repair. “As open-heart surgery carries moderate risk and is better performed when the dog is closer to full size, we hoped to

Horsetooth Mountain Open Space reopens after mountain lion attack By Jeffrey Lindblom @LindblomJeffrey

The trailheads at Horsetooth Mountain Open Space reopened Wednesday, after closing for eight days following a mountain lion attack in the area. A man running along the trails of Horsetooth Mountain Open Space killed a mountain lion in self-defense Feb. 4, sustaining injuries to both his face and wrist. The next day, authorities closed the Horsetooth Mountain and Soderberg trailheads after finding two more mountains lions near the area. Colorado Parks and Wildlife services’ assessment led to the eventual capture of two young mountain lions that will be transferred to a wildlife rehabilitation facility and later released back into the wild, according to a press release from Larimer County Natural Resources and the CPW. According to the release, the capture of these particular lions does not guarantee the safety of the public, as the reopening of Horsetooth does not mean there are no mountain lions in the area, and there will always be a chance to encoun-

ter wildlife on the property. “It’s important for people to recreate with wildlife in mind. We want people to enjoy these spaces, but we live close to these animals and we have to understand that there are times when you may come across something on the trail,” said Ty Petersburg, area wildlife manager for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, in the release. Though mountain lion attacks are rare, Colorado Parks and Wildlife reminds the public not to approach a lion, but if the situation arises to stay calm, back away slowly, appear larger, throw stones if the mountain lion behaves aggressively or fight back if you are attacked.

MORE INFORMATION ■ The man who was attacked by

a mountain lion and killed it in self defense will be holding a limited-access press conference today. Visit collegian.com to read his full story.

Puppy >> from page 1 address the pulmonary valve by a catheterization procedure and wait a few months before openheart surgery,” Scansen said.

“We are the only center doing open-heart surgery for dogs in North America.” CHRIS ORTON CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON

During this procedure, it was discovered that a major vein in Logan’s chest was missing, which complicated the pulmonary valve intervention, Scansen said. “We stopped the procedure and woke him up. He recovered fine and went back home,” Scansen said. “The plan is to have him come back in April for the openheart repair and we will address the pulmonary valve at the same time.” Chris Orton, the hospital’s cardiothoracic surgeon, said that Logan’s condition causes the tricuspid valve in the heart to not be able to close properly which in turn allows blood to flow backward when the heart contracts. Orton said this causes heart failure and death within the first couple of years of life if left untreated. “The surgery will be openheart surgery to repair the valve and decrease the amount of valve leak,” Orton said. “The surgery is

done on a heart-lung machine and takes about four to five hours to perform.” Orton said he’ll be taking care of Logan and performing the open-heart surgery when Logan returns. He’s been doing openheart surgery on dogs since 1991. “We are the only center doing open-heart surgery for dogs in North America,” Orton said. “Tricuspid valve repair is a more recent surgery that we have only been doing for about three years.” Scansen said that Orton performs one to two open-heart surgeries per month, with the majority of these for the last two years, have been for tricuspid valve dysplasia. They also see about 25 dogs per year with pulmonary valve dysplasia and balloon dilate them routinely. Judy Cobb, secretary for Rescued Hearts Northwest, said that Scansen has been understanding and helpful in working with them. She said he came recommended to them by someone who is acquainted with his work. That person told Scansen about Logan which prompted Scansen to reach out. “Scansen is an amazing veterinarian and cardiologist,” Cobb said. “(He) has been extremely compassionate and knowledge with regard to Logan’s condition. He explained in great detail what is wrong with Logan’s heart and what he would be doing to attempt to fix it.” There is currently a GoFundMe page to help pay for the costs of over $60,000 for his trip to Colorado and for his surgery. Logan plans to return in April. Charlotte Lang can be reached at news@collegian.com.

Concerns about campus tobacco ban, Darwin Day raised in ASCSU Senate By Stuart Smith @stuartsmithnews

Editor’s Note: Connor Cheadle and Abby Vander Graaff both are employed as columnists for the opinion section of The Collegian. Colorado’s recent tobacco ban and the ethics of consenting endorsement were both discussed at the Associated Students of Colorado State University Senate session Wednesday night. Senate response to smoking ban Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper signed an executive order in November that banned all vaping and tobacco use on CSU and state property. Wednesday night, Sen. Ethan Burshek presented a resolution opposing the ban and supporting the establishment of designated smoking areas on campus on the basis of the law being non-inclusive. “Addiction, especially substance addiction, is a recognized chronic illness,” Burshek said. “Someone who is addicted to a substance has essentially created what amounts to a mental illness… whereby they cannot interact with the world in the same way without that substance.” According to the resolution, the best action would be to set up smoking zones around campus with an area around them of about 10 feet, a distance where second-

hand smoke would be “negligible,” Burshek said. Examples of possible designated areas included the Oval or the Monfort Quad. Reports about “safe” distances from secondhand smoke vary widely, ranging from just six-anda-half feet to more than 30 feet, according to Time and the National Institute of Health respectively. The director of the office of policy and compliance told The Collegian last week that the University currently has no set plan to enforce the ban, but will make those decisions in the coming weeks. Consent ethics in Darwin Day resolution Questions were raised about endorsements on Sen. Connor Cheadle’s Darwin Day resolution that would support recognizing Evolutionary Science Day as an observed CSU holiday. The resolution was originally meant to support Darwin Day, which was Tuesday, but the name was changed after concerns were raised about the appropriateness of celebrating Darwin. In total, there were 65 names listed as endorsing the resolution, including at least one name written twice and at least two people who graduated from CSU. The names were pulled from the rosters of two anthropology classes taught by adjunct professor Kimberly Nichols, one last semester where the class explicitly endorsed

the resolution and one this semester where they did not. Abby Vander Graaff, one of the students listed on the endorsements who said she didn’t know the resolution existed, told the Senate how it felt. “I personally did not explicitly give my consent to have my name on the (resolution),” Vander Graaff said. “I feel like my trust was violated as a student and I was misrepresented.” At least two emails were sent to students in the class that said they could opt out of endorsing the bill, but Vander Graaff was not sure how effective that was. “I didn’t see it, so it’s probable that other students didn’t, and I just think there is probably some confusion about the ethics of doing that,” Vander Graaff said. After this was brought up, various senators also questioned the ethics of people having to opt-out of endorsing legislation, instead of choosing to opt-in. “From my perspective, I sense that this has been a forgery,” Sen. Jaquikeyah Fields said. “I don’t think that it matters whether or not there was an email blast sent out, you should get consent to add someone’s name on a bill before putting it on there.” The resolution was tabled and will be voted on next week. Stuart Smith can be reached at news@collegian.com.

Valentine’s Day celebrations mislead elementary schoolers Abby Vander Graaff @abbym.vg

Editor’s Note: All opinion section content reflects the views of the individual author only and does not represent a stance taken by The Collegian or its editorial board. By celebrating Valentine’s Day as a part elementary school curriculum, teachers are inviting romantic behavior without giving their students the tools to navigate it properly. According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, Valentine’s Day exists for lovers to express their affection for one another. Teachers promote this theme through the exchange of “Valentines” between students. While this activity is harmless in isolation, educators fail to realize that they are essentially

childproofing what is an overtly sexual and mature holiday. Even if teachers skew the focus to friendship and appreciation, they have no control over how their students choose to interpret the day’s celebrations. Kids could see this as a perfect occasion to send their crush a love note or ask them to be their significant other. Valentine’s Day flirtations seem harmless from the perspective of a college student, but the idea of romance is foreign to young children in the United States—primarily because our regulations surrounding relationship education are lacking. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 99 percent of all public school students will have nutrition education at some point. But sex education, which includes curricula surrounding healthy relationships, is not required by the Colorado Department of Education, meaning they could

have none. Kids are not taught how to express their romantic feelings for one another in a healthy ways. This means that students have absolutely no idea how to act on a romantic occasion such as Valentine’s Day.

“Regardless of whether their parents condone holding hands on the playground, kids need to know how to treat the people they care about with respect.” We need to teach children that is it okay to say no and how to take rejection without letting it impact their self-worth. Regardless of whether their parents condone holding hands on the playground, kids need to

COLLEGIAN COLUMNIST

Pornography doesn’t cure loneliness Madison Thompson @heyymadison

Editor’s Note: All opinion section content reflects the views of the individual author only and does not represent a stance taken by The Collegian or its editorial board. If it exists, somewhere on the internet, there is porn of it. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, for some, their loneliness will only be exacerbated by all the love they’re missing out on. Pornography can be a healthy outlet for adults who understand its implications, but early exposure to it and continued misconceptions about sex can lead to unhealthy sexual behavior. A measure in Arizona would declare porn a public health crisis on the grounds that it adversely affects children and is used pervasively, especially by minors. It does not technically have any legal implications, but is rather a symbolic gesture that could set the precedent for future regulation and policy on pornography. Arizona is not the first state to take action on pornography. Eleven other states currently have resolutions declaring pornography as a public health crisis. Utah was the first state to pass a resolution in 2016. Part of the measure makes reference

to pornography often serving as a sort of informal sex education for youths, which normalizes treatment of women as objects and commodities for the viewer’s use, and early exposure is leading to low self-esteem and body image issues as well. According to Pornhub statistics from 2015, a study by Mashable found Hawaii and Texas to be the two states most enthusiastic about love on social media, while Kansas and New Hampshire were some of the least romantic. The former’s traffic decreased significantly, while the latter’s spiked.

“People need relationships to survive.” In 2017, Pornhub saw a 17 percent decrease in national traffic on Valentine’s Day overall. Perhaps less people are equating sex with love than the implementation of these measures seems to suggest. People, especially men, are lonely. In 2014, Vivek Murthy, the former surgeon general, said loneliness and isolation are among the top causes for concern in public health. But as people age, they tend to shortchange their social relationships to focus on their families. “Our social connections are in fact largely influenced by the institutions and settings where

we spend the majority of our time,” Murthy said. If this is the case, then porn could likely lead to a predisposition for loneliness and isolation. Loneliness is tied to an array of health problems such as a greater risk of heart disease, depression, anxiety and dementia. Access to pornography shouldn’t be to blame for this issue. As usual, one of the main components to combating both loneliness and the fetishization of porn is to educate younger populations. As adults, most recognize that porn is an inaccurate representation of most sexual encounters. These issues do not exist in a vacuum. An individual’s predisposition to sexual violence depends on a number of other factors such as how they interpret that experience and how it interacts with any predisposing factors. In order to be most effective, these proposed measures should have a focus or resolution on medically accurate education and the differences between real life and pornography. As long as humans have access to the internet, people are going to have sex and watch porn. Banning porn or trying to make it more inaccessible will just make it even more taboo. Instead, efforts should be focused on education at a young age that normalize sexual relations in a healthy way. Madison Thompson can be reached at letters@collegian.com.

know how to treat the people they care about with respect. Elementary school students are impressionable at their young age, which makes these lessons even more necessary. University of Michigan professor Jacquelynne S. Eccles said that the development that occurs throughout the ages of 6 to 14 is crucial to the formation of identity. A day like Valentine’s Day, when not handled properly, can leave kids feeling stressed, confused and hurt. Their impressionability could provide them with misguided notions about relationships and identity that they could carry on through adulthood. Valentine’s Day celebrations are not the only factor in affecting unhealthy romantic interactions, but they certainly are a contributor to a cultural mindset that makes it more common. We cannot simultaneously treat sex and relationships as

taboo and encourage kids to partake in activities that imply these very things. In doing so, we endanger kids to become victims of and to perpetuate the rape culture it feels like our country has become known for. According to ABC News, Americans spend roughly $1 billion on Valentine’s Day greeting cards in one year. It is a special holiday for many, which should be a positive thing. It is a day of kindness and opportunity, when romantics get a chance to show their appreciation for another human being, and maybe even begin a beautiful relationship. We can make it positive for children too. If they must send one another Valentines on Feb. 14, let’s use it as an opportunity to teach them how to love one another and themselves in a healthy way. Her previous best was 66-3.75, which ranked fourth all-time in CSU history. Bedard’s new mark ranks her second in both program and Mountain West history and is the sixth-best in the NCAA this season. She ranks as the conference leader in the weight throw by nearly 10 feet. The senior will have one week off before attempting to break her record, as the Rams will return to action at the Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico from Thursday, Feb. 28 through Saturday, March 2 at the Albuquerque Convention Center. ATHLETICS

5 basketball players that have captured the Moby faithful Sergio Santistevan @TheRealsSergio

Fans cheer them on, yell at them and shed tears when they retire. The connection between fans and players is one of the most unique things about sports. It makes fans feel like they are a part of the team as if they have a personal connection with that player. All these factors lead to fans falling in love with players. Not because they actually love them but because they have built a bond with that player throughout the years. Several of Colorado State men’s and women’s basketball players have that connection with the Ram faithful, whether that be because of watching them all four years, their personality or just being a hometown kid. To celebrate Valentine’s Day, here’s a list of the most lovable players that call Moby Arena home. 1. Nico Carvacho Some people would say falling in love with someone requires two things: growth and loyalty. Nico Carvacho has reciprocated both traits to the CSU fan base. Coming to Fort Collins, Carvacho wasn’t a sought-after recruit for many Division I programs. He was a former-soccer star turned basketball player. In his redshirt freshman season, Carvacho was an unpolished center who struggled to make baskets. Two years later, he is now the focal point of the Rams’ offense. Fans have been able to see Carvacho turn into CSU’s all-time rebounder and with another year to play, Carvacho has a real shot to break the Mountain West alltime rebounding record as well. As in most relationships, loyalty is a staple. After the head coach that recruited him left CSU, Carvacho flirted with the idea of transferring. He ultimately decided to remain loyal to the program that gave him a chance, which is why he has become one of the most loved players in the fans eyes, especially his number one fan, Bryce Krisl. 2. Grace Colaivalu Sometimes you just fall in love with someone’s personality and heart. That’s the case with the fans and Grace Colaivalu. Despite being in her redshirt sophomore season with the Rams, Colaivalu has quickly become a fan-favorite in Moby Arena. She often has the biggest smile on the team and looks determined to win at all costs. Colaivalu makes it easy for fans to like her because of her constant smile, vibrant personality and calmness. Colaivalu’s per-

sonality has been shown in the past three games more than ever as she’s been out with an injury. Regardless of her situation, Colaivalu has remained on the Rams sideline like the biggest cheerleader and supporter through it all. The guard has even broken out dance moves on the sidelines for volleyball games – a true Ram. 3. J.D. Paige Finding commonalities in someone helps form a bond that can eventually lead to love. Coming into CSU, J.D. Paige and the Moby Faithful already had a couple things in common that sparked an interest. Paige was born and raised in Denver and attended Rangeview High School in Aurora. His grandfather played basketball at CSU from 1976-1978 and was eventually drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers.

“More importantly, playing all four years with one school is rare these days, but Paige has been a focal point of the Rams for the past few years. Paige has become a lovable figure at Moby Arena because of his hometown roots and familiarity the past few years.” The “hometown” kid is familiar with the Centennial State and had green and gold inside his blood from birth. More importantly, playing all four years with one school is rare these days, but Paige has been a focal point of the Rams for the past few years. Paige has become a lovable figure at Moby Arena because of his hometown roots and familiarity the past few years. Recently, he even tallied his thousandth career point, an accolade rarely accomplished in program history. 4. Myanne Hamm Every typical love story often concludes with the couple who grew up together falling in love with each other. CSU fans can relate to the cliché love story with their love for Myanne Hamm. Hamm played high school basketball ten minutes away from CSU at Poudre High School where she was a two-time team captain. She holds the field goal percentage record at Poudre where she shot 55 percent her sophomore season. Whenever the lights dim at Moby and introductions are un-

J.D. Paige (22) tries for a 3-point shot during the first half of the game against the University of Arkansas Razorbacks. During the game Dec. 5, he would end up scoring 16 points, tying Kendle Moore for total points on the day. PHOTO BY JOSH SCHROEDER COLLEGIAN

derway the crowd seems to get a little louder when Hamm is announced. Luckily for the fans, Hamm is going to be around for a while longer. 5. Adam Thistlewood One of the biggest things to falling in love is patience and fate. The Moby faithful and Adam Thistlewood were a match that wouldn’t have happened without a little bit of both. Thistlewood was born in Denver and played high school basketball in Golden. CSU of-

fered him a scholarship, but he committed to Drake University instead to play for Head Coach Niko Medved. A few months later, Medved left Drake for CSU and Thistlewood followed. The true freshman is averaging 7.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 27.6 minutes a game, but it’s not his stats that captured the fan’s hearts. At the beginning of the season, Thistlewood was falling all over the court to make a play. He is the type of player that plays

100 percent every night with a high-motor. At one point, he was sporting a bandage and bruising on his face, a true iron man. Thistlewood’s love in Moby can be best measured by how loud the arena gets when he knocks down a shot. The next three-plus years will only harness that love further. Sergio Santistevan can be reached at sports@collegian.com.

CULTURE & COMMUNITY

Dating meets technology By Lyra Wiley @lyra_wiley

It’s a new age for dating culture where every right-swipe opens new doors filled with possibilities. Meeting someone in person has almost been replaced by easy, quick and fun connections with strangers facilitated by Bumble, Tinder, Hinge, Grindr and other dating apps. Of course, these apps aren’t exclusively for hookups. On Bumble, users are able to specify whether they want someone casual, are unsure or are looking for a relationship. With this being said, it is hard to deny the contribution these apps have to hookup culture.

“I would rather someone ask me questions about myself to get to know me instead of trying to boost my ego with a pickup line they probably looked up on the internet about how beautiful they think i am.” SAMANTHA JONES INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN STUDENT

“You never really know why girls are using the app,” political science student Sam Shea said. “They might be using it to boost their self-esteem, pass the time while mindlessly swiping or they might actually be interested in a relationship, whether it be short or long-term.” With the help of dating apps and direct messaging, hookups are possible without virtually any work being done. In this time of flirty prosperity, however, there are unspoken rules to follow and mistakes to watch out for. After matching with someone, which is the first challenge to overcome, you now have to send the first message. In the realm of dating apps, there’s a multitude of approaches you can take. Holly Lamansky, a communication studies student, said humor is a great way to start off. “I think the best way to slide into the DMs is with a funny picture, meme or gif,” Lamansky said. “I think it’s tacky and cheesy to use pickup lines unless they’re something I’ve never heard before.” The first message can be a hit or miss. You can get creative

and take a risk or play it safe, but either way, remain confident. There’s no turning back after the message has been sent. “In order to determine whether or not someone is actually using the app for the purpose of pursuing someone, it’s important to send an appropriate pick up line that involves a date or a fun night,” Shea said. “You can usually determine what their intentions are from the response.” Ask your match about the story behind a picture or reference something they said in their bio. Sharing what you do for work, what you like or what you study can open up the conversation as well. If you’re really stuck and out of ideas, use the first message suggestions that the app gives you. “I would rather someone ask me questions about myself to get to know me instead of trying to boost my ego with a pickup line they probably looked up on the internet about how beautiful they think I am,” interior architecture and design student Samantha Jones said. If you want your matches to engage in a conversation with you, you have to give them something to work with. This is where your bio comes into play. Writing your bio can be a double-edged sword. You want to encapsulate who you are as a person, but you don’t want to

scare people away. The goal is to be yourself without overdoing it. “I look for a funny bio and one that I don’t see every day,” Lamansky said. “It is easier to swipe right on someone who catches my sense of humor rather than my eye. Also, it makes it more appealing if you don’t show your abs in your pictures.” Reference other bios to help create one that is unique to your personality. There are plenty of fish in the sea, but only one you. Also, everyone watches and frequently quotes “The Office.” It’s not special, nor is it a personality trait.

“When it comes down to it, every girl is unique,” Shae said. “But the more you use Tinder, the more you realize that this is just a numbers game more than anything else. Personally, I could care less because I am open to anything, just going with the flow.” Lyra Wiley can be reached at entertainment@collegian.com.

MUSIC

6 love ballads to serenade your date By Elena Waldman @Waldmanelena

Valentine’s Day is a controversial holiday. Cynics claim it is simply a capitalist construct designed to drive the sale of chocolate and flowers, while hopeless romantics consider it an important milestone in a healthy relationship. Regardless, the classic holiday holds an important weight in culture, especially when it comes to music. Whether people want to admit it or not, Valentine’s Day has inspired love ballads of all genres, from all eras, giving us an abundance of romantic classics. Here are some old-school Valentine’s Day classics for the in-love, the lonely or the brokenhearted souls. 1. “Sleepwalk” - Santo and Johnny A timeless hit from 1959, “Sleepwalk” sounds like what a sunset looks like. The song features a steel guitar as the most prominent source of the tune, giving it a smooth, honey-like sound. Though there are no words to this track, the instrumentals portray the sound of love perfectly on their own. 2. “A Teenager in Love” - Dion and the Belmonts Released in the late 1950s, a time when Doo-wop had reached its peak, “A Teenager in Love” could not be more symbolic of its era. This song has everything an old-school pop song needs: desperate lyrics, vocal harmonies and an upbeat tempo. 3. “La Vie en Rose” - Édith Piaf Many people may have heard “La Vie en Rose” for the first time sung beautifully by Lady Gaga in the “A Star is Born” soundtrack, but the song was originally released in 1947 by French singer Édith Piaf. As French is known as the bona fide language of love, this song is one of the most romantic ballads of all time. It explores the powerful influence of love,

saying “Je vois la vie en rose,” which translates to “I see life through rose-colored glasses.” 4. “Laughing on the Outside” - Bernadette Carroll Originally written by Bernie Wayne and Ben Raleigh in 1946, “Laughing on the Outside” became popularized by several different artists. The Netflix original series, “The End of the F*cking World” included the cover by Bernadette Carroll in the soundtrack, exposing it to mainstream audiences once again. “Laughing on the Outside” appears to be a sad song about heartbreak, though it is more whiny-sounding than tear-inducing. Still, the lyrics are amusing and are effective in emphasizing how many young people tend to blow the seriousness of their relationships out of proportion. 5. “Do You Want to Know a Secret” - The Beatles What more could the best selling band in history give us than a slew of timeless love songs? “Do you want to know a secret” was one of the many hits on The Beatles’ debut album, “Please Please Me,” released in 1963. The song was written by the infamous duo, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and speaks to the love interest of the writers. Accompanied by a simple yet beautiful three-chord tune, the lyrics feel youthful and innocent as if they were written for someone’s first love. 6. “At Last” - Etta James Etta James was an icon of the ‘60s and is still known today as one of the most influential voices in R&B music of all time. The song opens with an enchanting melody from the strings, followed by James’ effortlessly powerful vocals. “At Last” is reminiscent of the themes portrayed in classic Hollywood romance films, with the lyrics calling out to the singer’s one true love.
