2019 ACURA MDX

2019 ACURA RDX • Base Price (including destination): $45,300, $53,800 (hybrid)

• Base price (incl. destination): $38,300 • Type: Compact utility vehicle

• Type: Full-size tall wagon

When it comes to combining luxury and utility, the MDX stands tall against all comers. For the 2019 model year a sporty A-Spec appearance package joins the lineup. It comes with a unique nose, darkened alloy wheels and added body accents. The returning hybrid version also uses the same V-6 powerplant plus two electric motors to produce 321 horsepower. The hybrid, which employs a seven-speed dual-clutch (automated manual), reduces fuel consumption by about 20 percent in city driving, compared with the nonhybrid MDX. Acura’s AcuraWatch comes standard.

• Engines (h.p.): 3.5-liter V-6 (290); 3.5-liter V-6 with electric motors (321)

• Engine (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4 (272)

• Drivetrain: All-wheeldrive

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

• Transmission: Ninespeed automatic; sevenspeed automated manual (hybrid)

• Base MPG (city/highway/ combined): 22/28/24 (FWD)

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 19/27/22 (3.5) • Base weight (lb.): 4,000

2019 BMW X5

The longest-serving member of BMW’s X-vehicle family (it dates to the dawn of the 21st century) is now into its fourth generation and continues to set the pace for similar tall wagons to follow. Called a Sports Activity Vehicle in BMW’s marketingspeak, the X5 conveys style and performance at every turn. Physically there’s not a great difference between new and older models, except for an increase in width of 2.6 inches. For powertrains, the sDrive and xDrive 30i each have a turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the xDriveM40i uses a twin-turbo six-cylinder with 355 horses and 359 pound-feet.

• Base weight (lb.): 3,785

• Base price (incl. destination): $61,700

• Base price (incl. destination): $42,000

• Type: Full-size sportutility vehicleEngines (h.p.): 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6 (335); 4.4-liter V-8, turbocharged (456)

• Type: Compact-utility vehicle

• Transmission: Eightspeed automatic

• Transmission: Eightspeed automatic

• Drivetrain: All-wheeldrive

• Drivetrain: Rear-/allwheel-drive

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 18/26/21 (3.0, est.) • Base weight (lb.): 4,810

• Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 (248); 3.0-liter I-6, turbocharged (355)

Along with the 3 Series sedan, the X3 is one of BMW’s bread-and-butter models. For 2018, a whole new model rolled off the line at the automaker’s South Carolina assembly plant. Although similar to the previous X3, all body panels are different and the distance between the front and rear wheels was increased by 2.2 inches. For powertrains, the sDrive and xDrive 30i each have a turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the xDriveM40i uses a twin-turbo six-cylinder with 355 horses and 359 pound-feet.

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 21/28/24 • Base weight (lb.): 4,160

2019 BUICK ENVISION • Base price (incl. destination): $54,400

• Base price (incl. destination): $32,900

• Type: Four-door sedan

• Type: Five-passenger tall wagon

• Engine (h.p.): 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 (248); 3.0-liter I-6, turbocharged (335); 4.4-liter V-8, turbocharged (456); 2.0-liter I-4 with electric motor (248, combined) Drivetrain: Rear-/allwheel-drive • Transmission: Eightspeed automatic • Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 23/34/27 • Base weight (lb.): 3,810

2019 BUICK ENCLAVE

The second-generation Enclave that was introduced for 2018 uses the same body structure as the Chevrolet Traverse, which means there are two more inches between the front and rear wheels than in the original version. The vehicle’s utility is unchanged thanks to three rows of seats with room for up to eight riders. Pushing the start button fires a 3.6-liter V-6 that operates through a new nine-speed automatic transmission. Maximum tow rating with this combo is rated at 5,000 pounds.

Acura has designed the new RDX with a strong dose of passion to dovetail with the car’s practical nature and stellar performance. The interior is as radically different as the outside, with a dashboard replete with swoops and swirls that deviate from the less organic shapes found in competing models. Standard is a 272-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine. A smoothshifting 10-speed automatic transmission directs power to the front, or, optionally, to Acura’s Super Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD).

2019 BMW X3

2019 BMW 5 SERIES

Like the compact 3 Series, the 5 Series has been around for decades and with each successive iteration it receives added power and refinement. With seven variations to choose from, one of BMW’s midsize models is bound to suit the whims of most luxury-sedan buyers. At the top end, choices consist of the turbocharged 456-horsepower M550i and the 530e plug-in hybrid. The latter makes a combined output of 248 horsepower. It goes up to 30 miles on battery juice alone before the gas engine kicks in to help out. The mid-range turbocharged 540i is fitted with a 335-horsepower inline six-cylinder engine.

• Transmission: 10-speed automatic

• Engines (h.p.): 2.5-liter I-4 (197), 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (252) • Transmission: Ninespeed automatic • Drivetrain: Front-/allwheel-drive

The five-passenger built-in-China Envision slots between the seven-passenger Enclave and the sub-compact Encore in Buick’s tall wagon stable. From any angle, the Envision is one attractive automobile that contains not the slightest hint of its import heritage. The same goes for the interior that’s all about elegance and sophistication, with fancy wood and stitched leather trim. To keep the wagon looking fresh, both the front- and rear-ends have been restyled and there are new 18- and 19inch wheel designs.

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 22/29/25 (2.5, FWD) • Base weight (lb.): 2,850

2019 CADILLAC XT4 • Base price (incl. destination): $41,200

• Base price (incl. destination): $35,800

• Type: Full-size sportutility vehicle

• Type: Compact utility vehicle

• Engine (h.p.): 3.6-liter V6 (302)

• Engine (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (237)

• Transmission: Ninespeed automatic

• Transmission: Ninespeed automatic

• Drivetrain: Front-/allwheel-drive

• Drivetrain: Front-/allwheel-drive

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 17/25/20 (FWD)

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 24/30/27 (est.)

• Base weight (lb.): 4,360

Cadillac is fleshing out its utility-vehicle lineup that until now only had two members: the fivepassenger XT5; and the truck-based Escalade. Next to arrive is the five-passenger XT4, while a larger seven-passenger XT6 is expected for the 2020 model year. The XT4 will come up against the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3, as well as the new 2019 Lexus UX. The only available XT4 powertrain is a turbocharged 237-horsepower four-cylinder that’s attached to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

2019 CADILLAC XT5

2019 CADILLAC ESCALADE • Base price (incl. destination): $41,600

The five-passenger XT5 wagon shares virtually nothing with the previous SRX. Even so, Cadillac chose not to fiddle too much with the overall dimensions, other than a two-inch increase between the front and rear wheels for more rear-seat legroom plus a bit more stowage space behind the split-folding rear bench. The XT5’s body panels are sharply defined. But what really separates the old from the new is a platform that’s lighter by about 50 pounds.

• Type: mid-size tall wagon

• Base price (incl. destination): $76,000; $79,000 (ESV)

• Engine (h.p.): 3.6-liter V-6 (310)

• Type: Full-size sportutility vehicle

• Transmission: Six-speed automatic

• Base engine (h.p.): 6.2-liter V-8 (420)

• Drivetrain: Front-/allwheel-drive

• Transmission: 10-speed automatic

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 19/27/22 (FWD)

• Drivetrain: Rear-/fourwheel-drive

• Base weight (lb.): 3,990

The Escalade and extended-size Escalade ESV are more like luxury staterooms or rolling penthouses. With this Caddy, first-class combines maximum comfort and performance, along with all-road capability that it shares with General Motors’ more modestly-priced Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban and GMC Yukon/Yukon XL relatives. The ESV is 20 inches longer and has a 14-inch wheelbase advantage over the standard-size Escalade. That translates into a considerable gain in cargo space with both rear seats folded or with the standard third-row seat in place.

• Base weight (lb.): 5,600

2019 GENESIS G70

2019 CHRYSLER PACIFICA • Base price (incl. destination): $28,000

• Base price (incl. destination): $36,000

• Type: Minivan

• Type: Four-door midsize sedan

• Engine (h.p.): 3.6-liter V6 (287, or 260, Hybrid)

• Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter DOHC I-4, turbocharged (252); 3.3-liter DOHC V-6, twin-turbocharged (365)

• Transmission: Ninespeed automatic; continuously variable (Hybrid)

• Transmissions: Eightspeed automatic; Sixspeed manual (opt. FWD 2.0);

• Drivetrain: Front-wheeldrive • Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 19/28/22

The Pacifica is quite simply one of the best minivans on the market. It’s built on a weightsaving platform that’s wrapped in one of the most smartly tailored shapes in its class. Matching the tasteful exterior is a comfortable interior with room for up to eight people. Chrysler’s available Stow ’n Go (the second- and third-row seats fold beneath the floor) turns the Pacifica into a movable storage locker. Stow ’n Go isn’t available in the new Base Pacifica L model that gets the Stow n’ Place roof rack instead. It’s also not found in the Hybrid, since that space is reserved for lithium-ion battery storage. Regardless of model, a range of active safety tech is standard equipment.

• Base weight (lb.): 4,330

2019 GMC ACADIA

In the luxury-car pecking order, the midsize G70 perches on the bottom rung, alongside such notables as the BMW 3-series, Jaguar XE and Infiniti G50. The G70’s platform is based on the same one used to build the Kia Stinger hatchback (Kia is owned by Hyundai), except that it’s been shortened by about three inches between the front and rear wheels. Base 2.0T versions are armed with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque.

• Drivetrain: Rear- /allwheel-drive • Base MPG (city/highway/ combined): 22/30/25 (RWD) • Base weight (lb.): 3,850

2019 GMC SIERRA 1500 • Base price (incl. destination): $30,000

• Base price (incl. destination): $29,800

• Type: Mid-size pickup

• Type: Full-size pickup

• Engines (h.p.): 2.5-liter I-4 (193); 3.6-liter V-6 (310)

• Engines (h.p.): 4.3-liter V-6 (285); 2.7-liter I-4, turbocharged (310); 5.3-liter V-8 (355); 6.2-liter V-8 (420); 3.0-liter I-6, turbo-diesel (n.a.)

• Transmission: Six-speed automatic • Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

The now midsize second-generation Acadia hits a sweeter spot with buyers who value space, comfort and good looks, but in a less-than-fullsize package. Although it still comes with three rows of seats, the folding third-row is more kid- than adult-friendly. Understandably, cargo capacity has also been reduced and maximum towing capacity is now rated at 4,000 pounds, which represents a 1,200-pound reduction.

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 14/21/17 (4x4)

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 21/26/23 (2.5 FWD) • Base weight (lb.): 3,960

American drivers are looking toward SUV as their top vehicle choice with

32%

naming SUVs the #1 dream vehicle to lease or purchase in 2018.

Like the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC’s light-duty pickup has been completely redone. It starts with a lighter, but stronger chassis, aluminum body panels (replacing steel) and an available cargo box made partially from carbon fiber. The truck’s front and rear suspension systems also employ lighterweight components. Exclusive to the Sierra is a multi-function tailgate with a load-stop feature that keeps cargo inside the bed when driving with the tailgate lowered.

• Transmissions: Six-speed automatic (4.3, 5.3); eightspeed automatic (2.7, opt. 5.3); 10-speed automatic (6.2, 3.0 turbo-diesel) • Drivetrain: Rear- /fourwheel-drive • Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 16/23/19 (5.3, RWD/eight-speed AT) • Base weight (lb.): 4,530

2019 HYUNDAI SANTA FE

2019 HYUNDAI SONATA • Base price (incl. destination): $25,900

• Base price (incl. destination): $22,000

• Type: Midsize utility wagon

• Type: Four-door sedan • Engines (h.p.): 2.4-liter I-4 (185); 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (245); 1.6-liter I-4 (178, Eco); 2.0-liter I-4 with a 38-kilowatt electric motor (193, net)

• Engines (h.p.): 2.4-liter I-4 (185); 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (235) • Transmission: Eightspeed automatic • Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

Hyundai is calling its redesigned five-passenger tall wagon simply Santa Fe (formerly Santa Fe Sport), while the unaltered seven-passenger version – to be redesigned for 2020– the Santa Fe XL. The new version is quite striking to behold with a grille that’s bold as brass and windshield pillars that have been kept as slim as possible to aide forward visibility. Interior design is about as straightforward and gadget-free as you can get, including actual knobs and switches for the climate and audio controls and a real shift lever for swapping gears.

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 21/27/24 (2.4, FWD) • Base weight (lb.): 3,600

2019 JEEP CHEROKEE

Following a number of adjustments for the 2018 model year, Hyundai’s midsize sedan stays the course in a bracket that’s scrambling to hold its own against an onslaught of utility models (a.k.a crossovers). For its most recent update, the front and rear ends were restyled along with the hood, front fenders and trunk lid. The base 2.4-liter four-cylinder and optional turbocharged 2.0-liter engines I-4 remain unchanged, as does the turbo 1.6-liter engine that’s exclusive to the Sonata Eco.

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 25/36/29 (2.4) • Base weight (lb.): 3,250

• Base price (incl. destination): $25,700

• Base price (incl. destination): $ 30,200

• Type: Four-door sportutility vehicle

• Type: Two- /four-door sport-utility vehicle

• Engines (h.p): 2.4-liter I-4 (180); 3.2-liter V-6 (271); 2.0-liter DOHC I-4, turbocharged (270)

• Engines (h.p.): 3.6-litre V-6 (285); 2.0-litre I-4, turbocharged (270); 3.0-liter V-6, turbo-diesel (220, est.) • Transmissions: Six-speed manual; eight-speed automatic (opt.)

• Drivetrain: Front- /fourwheel-drive • Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 21/30/25 (2.4 FWD) • Base weight (lb.): 3,650

2019 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE

The latest Wrangler looks similar to the previous JK version, but is actually quite different. Overall length for two-door models has increased by about 2.5 inches, while the distance between the front and rear wheels has been expanded by an inch. Similarly, the four-door Wrangler Unlimited has gained roughly 3.5 inches in length and 2.5 inches in wheelbase. A 285 horsepower V6 remains the base engine, while an optional 270-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder is new.

• Drivetrain: Four-wheeldrive • Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 17/23/19 (V-6, MT) • Base weight (lb.): 4,010

2019 INFINITI QX60

• Base price (incl. destination): $31,500

• Base price (incl. destination): $46,000

• Type: Four-door sportutility vehicle

• Type: Four-door wagon • Engine (h.p.): 3.5-liter V-6 (295)

• Engines (h.p.): 3.6-liter V-6 (295): 5.7-liter V-8 (360); 6.4-liter V-8 (475); 6.2-liter V-8, supercharged (707)

• Transmission: Continuously variable • Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

• Transmission: Eightspeed automatic

From tame to torrid, the Grand Cherokee covers more bases than most other major-league sportutility vehicles. The “sport” reference is validated by the all-wheel-drive Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. It comes with a supercharged V-8 that puts out a ground-pounding 707 horsepower and 645 poundfeet of torque. It also uses a modified eight-speed automatic transmission, a tougher differential and rear driveshaft, plus beefed-up suspension components, compared to regular-strength GCs.

• Drivetrain: Front-wheeldrive

2019 JEEP WRANGLER

• Transmission: Ninespeed automatic

The current Cherokee, which is built on a platform developed in Italy by the Fiat division of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), arrived for 2014 and has been updated physically and in content for the 2019 model year. That includes the body structure ahead of the windshield that has been strengthened and the suspension retuned for a more compliant ride. The most significant change, however, is the addition of a new turbocharged 270-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine option. It joins the base 180-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder and the available 271-horsepower 3.2-liter V-6.

• Transmissions: Six-speed automatic (2.4); eightspeed automatic (2.0); seven-speed automated manual (turbo 1.6)

The QX60’s style and features make a compelling case for consideration as a future family wagon. Add attractive pricing and the QX60 becomes a practical indulgence that wins out over any number of traditional premium-priced sedans and wagons. For its most recent updating, the sevenpassenger wagon received a bolder mesh-style grille that replaces the previous face. All models come with a 3.5-liter V6 that’s also found in numerous Infiniti and Nissan models.

2019 INFINITI QX50 • Base price (incl. destination): $37,500 • Type: Four-door wagon/ hatchback • Engine (h.p.): 2.0-liter DOHC I-4, turbocharged (268) • Transmission: Continuously variable (CVT) • Drivetrain: Rear- /allwheel-drive

The five-passenger utility wagon has a new platform, new sheetmetal and what’s considered to be one of the most technologically advanced internal-combustion engines on the market. Compared to its predecessor, the new QX50 has grown in mostly all the right places. Although overall length and the distance between the front and rear wheels have shrunk, the width has increased by four inches and body height by 3.3 inches. That plus the new model’s more upright hind section provides a dramatic increase in cargo volume. The QX50 sheds the 325-horsepower V-6 for a turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 268 horsepower.

2019 NISSAN ALTIMA

2019 NISSAN ROGUE • Base price (incl. destination): $24,150

• Base price (incl. destination): $25,800; 28,600 (hybrid)

• Type: Four-door sedan

• Type: Four-door compact wagon

• Engines (h.p.): 2.5-liter I-4 (188), 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (248)

• Engines (h.p.): 2.5-liter I-4 (170); 2.0-liter I-4 with 30-kw electric motor (176, combined, Hybrid)

• Transmission: Continuously variable (CVT) • Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

The lagging demand for four-door family sedans hasn’t stopped the category leaders from continually upping their game. Nissan has totally reengineered the Altima with new skin highlighted by a dramatic grille. Although the new family sedan is within an inch of overall length and width of the previous version, the wheelbase has been extended by two inches. The engine lineup consists of a base 188-horsepower 2.5-liter fourcylinder, but for 2019 the optional V-6 has been replaced with a 248-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that has a unique variablecompression-ratio design.

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 28/39/32 (2.5) • Base weight (lb.): 3,200

2019 NISSAN KICKS

• Transmission: Continuously variable

The Nissan Rogue is one of the top contenders in the compact wagon segment and appeals to more buyers as one of the few compact utilities in its class to offer a hybrid version. It uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine working in tandem with a 30-kilowatt electric motor and lithiumion battery pack to produce a combined 176 horsepower. That’s six horses more than the gasonly Rogue makes.

• Base weight (lb.): 3,420

• Base price (incl. destination): $19,000

• Base price (incl. destination): $31,400

• Type: Four-door subcompact utility vehicle

• Type: Full-size pickup • Engines (h.p.): 5.6-liter V-8 (390); 5.0-liter V-8, turbo-diesel (310)

• Transmission: Continuously variable

• Transmissions: Sevenspeed automatic; sixspeed automatic (XD)

• Drivetrain: Front-wheeldrive

• Drivetrain: Rear- /fourwheel-drive

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 31/36/33 • Base weight (lb.): 2,640

2019 LEXUS UX

The California-designed, Tennessee-built Titan (hmm, there’s a football connection here) lineup comprises both single- and extended KingCab pickups (can be had with a rear-seat delete option), not to mention the four-door crew cab versions. The widening product range indicates that Nissan is serious about capturing a greater share of the pickup business from Ford, General Motors and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ Ram line, not to mention Toyota’s full-size Tundra pickup.

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 15/21/18 (5.6) • Base weight (lb.): 5,180

2019 LEXUS RX • Base price (incl. destination): $33,000 (UX 200T); $35,000 (UX 250h)

• Base price (incl. destination): $43,700; $45,700 (RX 350L) • Type: Front- /all-wheeldrive wagon

• Type: Compact wagon • Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (169); 2.0-liter I-4 with electric assist (175)

• Engines (h.p.): 3.5-liter V-6 (295); 3.5-liter V-6 with electric assist (308) • Transmissions: Eightspeed automatic; continuously variable (RX 450h)

• Transmission: Continuously variable (CVT)

The UX (the initials are derived from Urban crossover, or “X”-over) is shorter than the compact NX wagon by about five inches. The distance between the front and rear wheels, however, is shy only an inch, which aids rear-seat passenger comfort. The rest of the body’s knife-edge bumps and angles extend all the way back to the rear hatch. The taillights are joined by a translucent red ribbon that appears to double as a spoiler.

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 26/33/29 (2.5, FWD)

2019 NISSAN TITAN XD

• Engine (h.p.): 1.6-liter I-4 (125)

Kicks is urban slang for a cool pair of running shoes, but in this case it’s also about having fun. Visually, Nissan’s signature V-Motion grille design is in play, as are “floating” rear roof pillars that look to be scaled-down versions of those designed for the larger Murano wagon and Maxima sedan. Cargo capacity meets or exceeds similar models in the small-wagon class. The Kicks’ four-cylinder engine produces a modest 125 horsepower and 115 pound-feet of torque. The sole transmission is a continuously variable unit (CVT).

• Drivetrain: Front engine, front- /all-wheel-drive

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive • Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 31/35/33 (UX 200) • Base weight (lb.): 3,310

2019 LEXUS ES • Base price (incl. destination): $41,000

The RX has been a trendsetter since first turning a wheel for the 1999 model year and the current fourth-generation model is no different. Passengers in the RX 350 and RX 450h hybrid variant are treated to cabins with plenty of rearseat room and plenty of stowage space for their gear. For 2019 you can opt for the RX 350L that adds a third-row two-place seat. Lexus lengthened the RX by more than four inches to make this happen, but the folding bench is likely more kidthan adult-friendly.

The ES 350 and ES 300h hybrid remain unmistakable in their origins, but are more visually appealing and deliver greater kick-in-the-pants performance. Their new bodywork sheds the slab-sided look for more expressive curves and creases. The signature spindle grille has evolved to become a more elegant centerpiece. The standard V-6 in the ES 350 increases output to 302 horsepower from 268. The engine is connected to a new eight-speed automatic transmission. Lexus says the revised drivetrain yields a zeroto-60-mph time of 6.6 seconds, respectable for a 3,650-pound sedan.

2019 PORSCHE 718 CAYMAN

2019 PORSCHE CAYENNE

• Base price (incl. destination): $57,950; $70,350 (Cayman S); $81,750 (GTS) • Type: Two-door hardtop • Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter H-4 (300); 2.5-liter H-4 (350, S; 365, GTS) • Transmissions: Six-speed manual; seven-speed automated manual (PDK)

The same changes that were made to the Porsche Boxster have also been made to this hardtop relation. That includes the addition of a quicker GTS model with a turbocharged fourcylinder that’s rated at 365 horsepower, or 15 more than the Cayman S upon which it’s based. The base Cayman 2.0-liter four-cylinder — also turbocharged — produces 300 horsepower, while the Cayman S with the larger 2.5-liter four-cylinder puts out 350 horses. With either engine you can specify a six-speed manual transmission or automated manual (known as a PDK).

• Drivetrain: Mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive • Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 21/28/24 (2.0, MT) • Base weight (lb.): 2,940

2019 PORSCHE MACAN

Five doors that are open to any adventure. With a new, dynamic design and a new generation of efficient, turbocharged engines. With outstanding digital connectivity that brings the whole world into the cockpit. With versatility, quality and new cutting-edge driver assistance systems that offer both driver and passengers extraordinary comfort. This is how the Cayenne makes the Porsche experience even more fascinating, even more diverse. And yet remains what it has always been: a genuine sports car.

• Type: 5 Door Luxury Sport SUV • Base price is $65,700 + destination and handling • Base mpg (city/highway 18/24) • Curb weight (lb): 4,377lb

2019 PORSCHE PANAMERA • Base price (incl. destination): $48,850 (2018) • Type: Four-door compact tall wagon • Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (248) • Transmission: Sevenspeed automated manual • Drivetrain: All-wheeldrive

The Macan is more than a smaller-sized Cayenne; the wagon’s architecture originates from the Audi Q5 (Porsche and Audi are part of Volkswagen), however its mostly aluminum body is influenced by the Cayenne, from the shape of the front end to the slant of the lifgate. Exterior styling receives a mild touch-up, but interior changes are more radical, including a large 10.9-inch touchscreen built into the dashboard and two rows of switchgear for various climate and seatadjustment functions flanking the shifter. The entry-level Macan comes with a new turbocharged four-cylinder with 248 horsepower and 273 poundfeet of torque.

• The standard features of the Porsche Cayenne Base include 3.6L V-6 300hp and 4 additional engine options including a 440-hp, 520-hp and 570-hp engines, all with 8-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS), integrated navigation system, side seat mounted airbags, curtain 1st and 2nd row overhead airbags, rear side-impact airbag, driver knee airbag, airbag occupancy sensor, automatic air conditioning, 18” aluminum wheels, cruise control, ABS and driveline traction control.

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 20/25/22 (2.0, est.) • Base weight (lb.): 3,950

The all-wheel-drive Panamera still looks much like the original car, despite an extensive 2017-modelyear makeover. At that time, the front and rear ends were reshaped to a point where labeling the car gorgeous would not be inaccurate. In fact, some of Porsche’s 911 sports car’s DNA appears to have seeped into the hatchback sedan. The cabin was also reworked, including the installation of a Cinemascope-sized touchscreen that oversees the infotainment, communications and climate-control systems.

• Base price (incl. destination): $86,100 • Type: Four-door luxury hatchback sedan/wagon • Engines (h.p.); 3.0-liter V-6, twin-turbocharged (440); 4.0-liter V-8, twinturbocharged (550) • Hybrid systems (h.p): 3.0-liter V-6 with 136-horsepower electric motor (462, combined); 4.0-liter V-8, twin-turbocharged, with 136-horsepower electric motor (680) • Transmission: Eight-speed automated manual with paddle-shift controls • Drivetrain: All-wheel-drive • Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 21/29/24 (3.0) • Base weight (lb.): 4,000

2019 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER

• Base price (incl. destination): $22,000 (est.)

• Base price (incl. destination): $27,700; $35,600 (PHEV)

• Type: Compact utility vehicle

• Type: Midsize utility vehicle

• Engine (h.p.): 1.5-liter I-4, turbocharged (168, est.)

• Engines (h.p.): 2.4-liter I-4 (166); 3.0-liter V-6 (224); 2.0-liter I-4 with electric motor (195, combined)

• Transmission: Continuously variable • Drivetrain: Front-/allwheel-drive

The automaker that recently became part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance is launching a fivepassenger tall wagon that uses a name originally assigned to a long-retired two-door coupe and convertible. The Eclipse Cross slots between the seven-passenger Outlander and the Outlander Sport, but the Eclipse Cross is equal to both in distance between the front and rear wheels. It also resembles the Sport in some ways except for a more modern front-end styling treatment that appears Lexus-inspired and an oddly positioned light bar at the rear that extends between the tail lamps, splitting the liftgate glass nearly in half.

• Base MPG (city/highway/ combined): n.a. • Base weight (lb.): 3,400, (est.)

2019 MAZDA CX-5

While the automotive world awaits the fruits of Nissan’s recent purchase of Mitsubishi, the automaker has been busy creating the Outlanderbased Eclipse Cross and introducing a plug-in hybrid version of the larger Outlander, called the PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle). It combines a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with two electric motors (one for each axle) that run off a 300-volt lithiumion battery pack for a combined 195 horsepower.

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 25/30/27 (2.4) • Base weight (lb.): 3,350

• Base price (incl. destination): $25,100

• Base price (incl. destination): $33,250

• Type: Compact utility wagon

• Type: Four-door, sevenpassenger tall wagon

• Engine (h.p.): 2.5-liter I-4 (187)

• Engine (h.p.): 2.5-liter I-4, turbocharged (227/250) • Transmission: Six-speed automatic

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive • Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 25/31/28 (FWD) • Base weight (lb.): 3,560

2019 MERCEDES GLC

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

Mazda promotes driving enjoyment through advanced technology and knockout design. The automaker has applied this approach to its midsize family wagon with three rows of seats. The CX9, equipped with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, produces 250 horsepower when using premium gasoline, or 227 horsepower on regular fuel (torque remains unchanged at 310 poundfeet) and is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. The CX-9 carries the same basic design as the rest of the Mazda lineup, which includes a car-like front end.

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 22/28/25 (FWD) • Base weight (lb.): 4,170

2019 MERCEDES GLE • Base price (incl. destination): $47,000; $88,000 (CTS-V)

• Base prices (incl. destination): $54,000 (est.)

• Type: Premium sedan

• Types: Four-door utility vehicle

• Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (272); 3.6-liter V-6 (335); 3.6-liter V-6, twin-turbocharged (420); 6.2-liter V-8, supercharged (640)

Built off the C-Class car platform, the swoopy GLC tall wagon and four-door hatchback “coupe” slots between the GLA wagon and the E-Classbased GLE Coupe. Of the three, it’s perhaps the best compromise in terms of size and affordability. The compact utility is available in GLC300 and GLC300 4MATIC and AMG GLC43 formats. In addition, the AMG CLC63 that arrived for 2018 now comes with 469 horsepower at the ready (107 more than the GLC43), or 503 horsepower when opting for the S version.

• Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

2019 MAZDA CX-9

• Transmissions: Six-speed automatic

The CX-5’s smaller CX-3 relation is one cute and sporty little wagon that’s getting a lot of attention, but it does have its limitations. For more people and cargo capacity, the bigger CX-5 is a better choice. It not only looks pretty good, but it’s just as lively a driver. The CX-5’s mechanical bits are part of Mazda’s “Skyactiv” system that’s more than just marketing puffery; it represents a holistic transformation of the powertrain plus various other components that helps save fuel and has turned the entire Mazda lineup into exemplary driving machines.

• Transmissions: Continuously variable; six-speed automatic (V6)

• Transmissions: Eightspeed automatic • Drivetrain: Rear- /allwheel-drive • Base MPG (city/highway/ combined): 21/29/24 (2.0) • Base weight (lb.): 3,920

• Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (255); 3.0-liter I-6, turbocharged (362) • Transmission: Ninespeed automatic

The latest edition of the midsize utility vehicle arrives in early 2019 as a 2020 model. The GLE gains more than three inches between the front and rear wheels, which is enough for an available third-row seat. Additionally, an optional air suspension can lower the body by 1.6 inches for easier entry/exit, or raise it for off-road excursions. Along with new sheetmetal, the GLE’s technohighlights include E-Active Body Control.

2019 HONDA ACCORD

2019 HONDA CRV • Base price (including destination): $24,500; $26,000 (Hybrid)

• Base price (incl. destination): $25,250 • Type: Compact utility vehicle

• Type: Mid-size sedan • Engines (h.p.): 1.5-liter I-4, turbocharged (192); 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (252); 2.0-liter I-4 with electric motor (212, Hybrid)

Perhaps it’s no coincidence that North America’s two leading sedans (the Toyota Camry is the other) were completely redesigned for the 2018 model year. But it’s the Accord that displays the most radical adjustment, both in the design and in propulsion systems. Although just a touch shorter, Honda stretched the wheelbase by more than two inches for greater legroom, while lowering the silhouette by half an inch. The Accord’s body is attached to a lighter and stronger platform that is significantly lighter than before.

• Transmissions: Six-speed manual; continuously variable (CVT, 1.5); 10-speed automatic (2.0) • Drivetrain: Front-wheeldrive • Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 30/38/33 (1.5, CVT) • Base Weight (lb.): 3,130

2019 HONDA CIVIC

• Engine (h.p.): 2.4-liter I-4 (184); 1.5-liter I-4, turbocharged (190) • Transmission: Continuously variable (CVT) • Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

The CR-V that was all new for 2017 uses a version of the same platform first developed for the Honda Civic. As a result there’s an extra 1.6 inches between the front and rear wheels that primarily benefits rear-seat passengers with more legroom in an already spacious environment that beats most of the utility vehicle’s competitors. Overall length was increased slightly, but the increase in stowage space behind the rear seat is mostly due to a taller and wider cabin.

• Base price (incl. destination): $20,350

• Base price (including destination): $32,450

• Types: Four-door sedan; two-door coupe; fourdoor hatchback

• Type: Four-door full-size tall wagon

• Transmissions: Six-speed manual; continuously variable (CVT) • Drivetrain Front-wheeldrive • Base mpg (city/highway): 28/40/32 (1.5, CVT) • Base weight (lb.): 2,760 (sedan)

2019 TOYOTA COROLLA HATCHBACK

• Base engine (h.p.): 3.5-liter SOHC V-6 (280) • Transmissions: Six- / nine-speed automatic • Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

The third-generation eight-passenger Pilot utility vehicle is one of a trio of Honda vehicles receiving styling and content updates for the 2019 model year (along with the HR-V and Civic). Although exterior changes are subtle, they do help make the Pilot less anonymous. Interior changes include new touchscreen that comes with an actual volume knob for the audio system. The Pilot’s 280-horsepower V-6 carries over, supported by a six-speed automatic transmission for LX, EX and EX-L trims, while the premium Touring and Elite trims have nine forward speeds.

• Base weight (lb.): 4,050

• Base price (incl. destination): $19,600; $20,900 (hatchback)

• Base price (incl. destination): $24,800

• Type: Four-door sedan, four-door hatchback

• Engines: (h.p.): 2.5-liter I-4 (206); 3.5-liter V-6 (301); 2.4-liter I-4 with 105-kilowatt electric motor (208, combined, Hybrid)

• Type: Mid-size sedan

• Transmissions: Six-speed manual; continuously variable (CVT) • Drivetrain: Front-wheeldrive • Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 28/36/32 (sedan, CVT) • Base weight (lb.): 2,800

2019 TOYOTA RAV4

The eighth-generation Camry underwent what could be considered Toyota’s version of radical surgery. Nearly all the car’s bits and pieces were produced from fresh molds and stampings, yet it remains, well, Camry-like. Toyota’s designers extended the length and width only slightly, but they increased the distance between the front and rear wheels by a generous three inches for greater interior leg and knee room. In addition, the roofline is slightly lower, as are the seating positions, resulting, says Toyota, in a lower center of gravity.

• Transmissions: Eightspeed automatic (opt.); continuously variable (hybrid) • Drivetrain: Front-wheeldrive • Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 29/41/34 (2.5, MT); 51/53/52 (Hybrid) • Base weight (lb.): 3,240

2019 TOYOTA TACOMA • Base price (incl. destination): $26,000 (est.)

• Base price (incl. destination): $26,600 • Type: Two- /four-door mid-sized pickup

• Type: Compact-utility vehicle

• Engines (h.p.): 2.7-liter I-4 (159); 4.0-liter V-6 (278)

• Engines (h.p.): 2.5-liter I-4 (198, est.); 2.5-liter I-4 with two electric motors (220, combined, est.)

The fifth-generation RAV4 is literally new from the wheels up, starting with a more rigid platform and a lower and wider profile. Styling changes include an aggressive-looking front end, while the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is linked to a new eight-speed automatic transmission. The gasolineelectric hybrid model also uses the 2.5, but it adds electric motors for the front and rear axles, and a continuously variable transmission.

• Base mpg (city/highway): 19/27/22 (FWD)

2019 TOYOTA CAMRY

• Engine (h.p.): 1.8-liter I-4 (132, 140 LE Eco); 2.0-liter I-4 (168)

The car that started the ball rolling for Toyota in North America has spawned literally dozens of models over the decades and helped lift the Toyota franchise into the powerhouse it is today. Truth be told, the Corolla is nowhere near as flashy or sporty as many of its peers, but it’s solidly built, remains a hassle-free conveyance throughout its protracted lifetime and delivers a solid return for its owners when they pick out a replacement. Still running strong for Corolla is a 132-horsepower four-cylinder that remains unaltered from the previous generation.

2019 HONDA PILOT

• Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4 (158): 1.5-liter I-4, turbocharged (174, 205 Si); 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (306, Type R)

The 10th-generation Civic sedan, coupe and hatchback deliver big-time in terms of space, style and performance. The entire lineup has only been around for a short while in their current guise, but that hasn’t stopped Honda from giving them a mild design refresh, updating the interiors (including the audio system) and installing a range of dynamic safety tech in all models. Mechanically the range of four-cylinder engines carries over unaltered, starting with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a turbocharged 1.5-liter I-4 that are the mainstays of the basic sedan and coupe (the base hatchback uses only the larger turbo).

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 26/32/28 (FWD)

• Transmissions: Eightspeed automatic; continuously variable (CVT, Hybrid) • Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive • Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 24/32/27 (2.5, 4x2, est.) • Base weight (lb.): 3,500 (est.)

• Transmissions: Fivespeed manual; six-speed manual (V-6); six-speed automatic (opt.)

Truck buyers rank Toyota’s mid-size pickup highly, which is good since there’s no shortage of competition in this bracket and with more expected in the next few years from Ford, Ram (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), Volkswagen and others. A 2.7-liter four-cylinder, is the base engine, while a more potent V-6 is optional. The I-4 is paired with a five-speed manual transmission; the V-6 gets a six-speed unit (a six-speed manual is standard on TRD models).

• Drivetrain: Rear- /fourwheel drive • Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 19/23/21 (2.7, MT, 4x2) • Base weight (lb.): 3,980

2019 SUBARU ASCENT

2019 SUBARU CROSSTREK • Base price (incl. destination): $33,000

• Base price (incl. destination): $22,700

• Type: Full-size utility vehicle

• Type: Four-door hatchback/wagon

• Engine (h.p.): 2.4-liter four-cylinder, turbocharged (260)

• Engine (h.p.): 2.0-liter H-4 (152) • Transmissions: Six-speed manual, continuously variable (opt.)

• Transmission: Continuously variable (CVT) • Drivetrain: All-wheeldrive

The Ascent represents a do-over of sorts for Subaru. The automaker’s previous full-size-utility effort, the Tribeca, was an ultimately unsuccessful attempt at cracking a segment dominated by Chevrolet, Ford, Toyota, Honda and others. Following a five-year category absence, the built-in-Indiana Ascent joins the three-rowsof-seats group. This time around, Subaru has created a roomier structure for up to eight adultsized passengers. A second-row bench seat is standard, but that can be swapped for two extracost high-back bucket seats that can slide fore and aft to improve access to the third row.

• Base mpg (city/highway): 21/27/23 • Base weight (lb.): 4,600

2019 SUBARU FORESTER

Subaru’s best-selling model receives praise for its tough-when-it-needs-to-be attitude, passenger comfort and reliability. On good roads and bad, the standard all-wheel-drive system operates virtually unnoticed. But when required, which is frequently in snow-belt regions, the Forester’s mountain-goat capabilities make it a popular choice. Although the current model appears similar to the outgoing Forester, it’s now built atop Subaru’s stronger and lighter Global platform.

• Drivetrain: All-wheeldrive

The Crosstrek enjoys a reputation as a rugged performer over mud, snow and rough roads. It also bears close kinship to the Impreza hatchback, with both using Subaru’s Global platform, engineered to provide the best possible ride-and-handling combination. The off-road capable model has 8.7 inches of rock-hopping ground clearance, plus unique bumpers, roof rails, protective side cladding and rear spoiler. The tougher look is enhanced with darker window tinting and a set of 17-inch allseason tires mounted on custom-look wheels.

• Base mpg (city/highway): 26/32/28 (2.5, CVT) • Base weight (lb.): 3,320

Subaru remains solidly in the driver’s seat with the ever-popular Outback wagon, which is a close kin to the Legacy sedan. The primary selling feature remains the standard all-wheel-drive system with Subaru’s Active Torque Vectoring. It applies light brake pressure to the inside front wheel during a turn, which aids vehicle stability. Carried over are the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder and optional 3.6-liter six-cylinder engines. Both are connected to continuously variable transmissions.

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 25/32/28 (2.5) • Base weight (lb.): 3,620

2019 VOLKSWAGEN ARTEON • Base price (incl. destination): $26,000 (est.) • Type: Hatchback sedan • Engines (h.p.): 2.0-liter I-4, turbocharged (268) • Transmissions: Eightspeed automatic • Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive

STATUS: New for 2019 — Volkswagen’s replacement for the CC is considerably larger than that retired model and is slightly larger than the current Passat sedan. But the fastback body that has been fitted with a liftgate instead of a trunk makes it both practical and stylish. It also arrives with plenty of standard gear, including tri-zone climate control, heated front seats and active dampers (shocks) that react in milliseconds to varying road conditions and driver inputs for a smoother, more controlled ride.

• Base weight (lb.): 3,110

2019 SUBARU OUTBACK

2019 VOLKSWAGEN ATLAS

The Tennessee-built, seven-passenger Atlas joined the burgeoning full-size utility segment for the 2018 model year. The largest VW in the fleet appears bigger than the tape measure otherwise indicates. Perhaps that’s due to the wide and thin grille, the bulging fenders or the vehicle’s boxy shape (or a combination of all three). Among its endearing qualities is an abundance of space throughout all three rows of seats.

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 23/29/25 (MT)

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): n.a. • Base weight (lb.): 3,500 (est.)

Though not developed specifically for the North American market, Volkswagen says the Tiguan design was influenced by North American preferences for more passenger and cargo spaciousness. Overall length was increased by 10.6 inches, width by about an inch and the distance between the front and rear wheels by nearly six inches, compared to the previous version. That makes it the largest wagon in its class (even outsizing the Honda CR-V) and provides enough interior space for a third-row seat.

• Base mpg (city/highway/ combined): 22/27/24 (FWD) • Base weight (lb.): 3,780
