Who’s Who the personalities behind Barrett-Jackson
russ Jackson, along with Tom Barrett, founded Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car AuctionsTM, in 1971. Jackson, originally from Michigan, relocated to Scottsdale in 1960 with wife Nellie. Jackson’s passion for classic automobiles, especially of the 1930s, led him to a meeting with Barrett, who was selling a 1933 Cadillac V-16 Town Car built for actress Joan Crawford. The sale never took place, but a love of old cars led to the creation of Fiestas de los Auto Elegantes, later named Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction. Jackson died in 1993 of colon cancer. Nellie Jackson co-founded BarrettJackson along with her husband Russ, and Tom Barrett and held an executive position with the company since the doors opened in 1971. Her passion for automobiles and her business acumen were a driving force behind BarrettJackson’s evolution into the world’s leading collector car auction company. Nellie, matriarch of the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company, served as executive director until her death Feb. 10, 2010. Tom Barrett, founder of Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, along with Russ Jackson, launched the first auction in 1971 with vehicles from their private collections. Barrett brought the best and rarest automobiles to the event, earning the reputation of “Grandfather of the Collector Car Industry.” Barrett retired in 1997 and died in 2004. Brian Jackson, son of Russ Jackson, took over the reigns of Barrett-Jackson in 1993, after his father succumbed to cancer. The younger Jackson passed away two years later of the same illness. Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO, assumed control of Barrett-Jackson in 1997. Jackson has shared his family’s passion for automobiles from an early age, learning every aspect of both the collector car and restoration businesses as he climbed the corporate ladder. The result has been numerous Best of Show and First Place trophies, as well as an extensive education on classic car restoration.

Barrett-Jackson hopes to build on the fundraising success it had in 2011.
Barrett-Jackson’s own Steve Davis and was re-donated for the Scottsdale 2012 auction where it sold for another $1 million to benefit the same charitable cause. Nearly $5.9 million was raised to benefit more than 20 local and national charities when Barrett-Jackson kicked off the 2012 automotive calendar in Scottsdale. Along with the incredible repeat sale of the 1964 Ford Fairlane, the second top-selling charity car was the 2013 Chevrolet Corvette 427 Convertible, which sold for $600,000 with an additional $100,000 donation added to it to benefit the AARP Drive to End Hunger, an organization that aims to end hunger among older Americans. On the heels of the stellar Scottsdale 2012 kick-off, Barrett-Jackson continued the success of fundraising at the 10th Annual Palm Beach
(Fla.) Auction in April, raising nearly $1.8 million for the benefit of six charities. The Darrell Gwynn Foundation kicked off the charitable outreach at the Opening Night Gala with their silent auction that raised $55,000; another $222,000 was raised for the foundation from the sale of three vehicles during the auction. A 2011 Ford Shelby GT500 2 Door Hardtop stole the show when it sold once for $500,000 then immediately was re-donated and crossed the block again totaling $1 million to benefit the Wounded Warriors Family Support. Last year during the BarrettJackson 2011 Orange County Auction nearly $1 million was raised. The Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer benefited as well as Cell Phones for Soldiers, the Center for Living Peace and the Tony Hawk Foundation.

5 tips for buying a ...
culture of giving a big part of barrett-jackson auctions
here’s only one thing bigger and more astounding than the engines at Barrett-Jackson — the hearts of the bidders and consignors who donate millions of dollars to charity annually. In fact, last year’s 40th Anniversary of the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction set a new record of charitable giving. To date, the legendary auction house has raised over $47 million for charity, with over $21 million of that having been raised since January 2010. The organizations benefiting from this influx of needed funds touch people from every walk of life. “Our executives, consignors and bidders took altruism to a whole new level in 2011,” said Craig Jackson, BarrettJackson’s chairman and CEO. “Philanthropy is a major component of the BarrettJackson culture, and due to the tremendous generosity of our customers, participants and attendees, we look forward to watching this figure grow for years to come.” Last year, Barrett-Jackson ended its 40th Anniversary in Las Vegas; however, that did not put an end to the charitable giving. Josh Duhamel came to the Las Vegas auction supporting the sale of a 2006 Shelby Cobra Re-Creation Roadster donated by Barrett-Jackson and signed by Duhamel along with the members of the Black Eyed Peas. The charity sale raised $100,000 for the Minot Area Community Foundation Recovery Fund. A 1964 Ford Fairlane raised an incredible $700,000 to support the Armed Forces Foundation. The Fairlane was donated by
Now, as Barrett-Jackson 2012 revs its engines and advances to the charitable powerhouse of Orange County, the rally for charitable causes continues with another great round of cars being auctioned to benefit some very worthy non-profit organizations. Those who are able to share some of their good fortune couldn’t choose a better place to do it than at Barrett-Jackson. Its strong culture of giving is fueled by its generous clientele. During the sale of a charity vehicle, the crowd’s exhilaration and emotions rise in the energized atmosphere of the auction arena, where individuals from a wide variety of charities and causes benefit from the generosity of BarrettJackson and its big-hearted patrons. After four decades, the millions raised for charity continue to multiply.

She’s the one. And she’s coming up for sale at the World’s Greatest Collector Car Auction. You have to have her. Now what? Tens of thousands of cars have been bought and sold at Barrett-Jackson over four decades, so you’re in the right place. Here are a few tips to ease you into the process and make you feel comfortable with your collector-car bidding experience: 1. Do your homework – Research recent selling prices for the make, model and condition of the car you’re coveting. Barrett-Jackson offers a shortcut online at Barrett-Jackson.com, where you can search by make and model and review catalog descriptions of the vehicles sold. 2. You communicate directly with these assistants who accept your bid and relay it to the main auctioneer. 4. You won! – You’re the winning bidder of your dream car. Head back over to the bidding department to pay for your car. A few signatures later, and she’s officially yours. 5. Take care of her – First thing you need to do is insure your new gem, and Barrett-Jackson offers Barrett-Jackson-endorsed insurance. If you choose to go elsewhere, make sure the policy is specific to a collector car so she’s protected.

The following is Schwarzkopf ’s exclusive interview with automotive journalist Rich Taylor. • Taylor: I’m familiar with your collector car insurance program because I insure my own car collection through Barrett-Jackson Endorsed Insurance, but tell me about some of your other clients and what you’re able to do for them. Schwarzkopf: Well, at one end of the spectrum, we have clients who insure a single car with us. Often, it’s someone who’s a first-time buyer at a Barrett-Jackson auction. We have underwriters on-site at every Barrett-Jackson event, and we can put an insurance binder on the car before it leaves the auction site. If the car is unique, something that a normal insurance agent wouldn’t know how to handle, our underwriters can value it because they specialize in collector cars and can place the car with an insurance carrier that understands the collector car market. Taylor: What’s the other extreme? Schwarzkopf: The largest collection we currently handle has 1,100 cars!
