Ranch Association Committees are confirmed Each year the Ranch Association Board

appoints members to its standing committees which are Budget and Finance, Modifications, Policy and Firewise.

The Modification Committee consists of at least three but not more than five members approved by and serving at the Board’s discretion. The chair of the committee is Board Member, Geoff Wilner. The Modification Committee is comprised of Pam Kacir, Scott Whitmire and recently elected new volunteers, Dean Gerstein and Jan Spielman. The Policy Committee is composed of three to five members, two of which shall be sitting Directors on the Board, which are Chair Elaine Cottey

and President Phil Geiger. Past directors may also sit on this committee and both Tom Headley and Stephen Koven were appointed for this upcoming year. The Executive Director also serves as a member of this committee.

The Firewise Committee is composed of seven members: three residents Andrea Brin, Kris James, and Paul Staker, two sitting Directors, Phil Geiger (Chair) and Greg Kiraly, and two staff members, the Landscape Manager and Meghann Hill, Director of Community Services.

New artificial turf guidelines coming soon The installation of artificial turf in community associations has become an increasingly pressing topic, and with Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) goal of sustainable water supplies by 2030, Arizona legislators approved HB 2131 which prevents an association from prohibiting the use of artificial turf on any member’s property so long as it does not cause health or safety concerns. With this new statute, and ADWR’s water sustainability goals, Arizona is trending towards encouraging conservation measures like artificial turf. With the improvements that have been made to the quality of artificial turf over the years, this water-saving alternative is more appealing and aesthetically pleasing than it has been in the past.

The Design Guidelines on artificial turf will be forthcoming based on the Village in which you live. All requests for artificial turf must be submitted in accordance with the procedures outlined by the Design Guidelines. Review by the Modification Committee is required, and turf may not be installed without approval. Verdaglio is the owner and president of Sawyer Aviation Group, a full-service aviation company that was founded in 1961. The company is headquartered in the Scottsdale Airpark with additional operations and offices out of Van Nuys Airport. Sawyer Aviation began as a private charter provider and flight school. Verdaglio grew up in Scottsdale working in his family’s business. It was there that he got on-thejob training in sales, marketing and finance and his entrepreneurial spirit first took flight. The summer before Verdaglio went to college, he signed up for an intro paraglide ride. Soaring through the sky was exhilarating, and he knew 20341 N 96th Way List Price $1,455,000

After graduation, Verdaglio returned to the family business where he oversaw sales and marketing for the company. He left after a few years to start a tech company specializing in data storage and recovery, which he eventually sold. This experience prompted him to return to school for his MBA. He was quickly offered a position as an instructor and was then presented with the opportunity to purchase the company. They also transport organ transplant teams across the western U.S. Since 2018 the company has achieved a 900 percent increase in revenues.

NEWSWORTHY DC Ranch Neighborhood Park is open

Corporate Center nearing build-out

While the grass may not always be greener on the other side, it’s looking very green at the DC Ranch Neighborhood Park. The City of Scottsdale will soon complete Phase One of the park. Residents will be able to bike, run or walk the trails, lounge in the grass beside the lake, or enjoy a picnic with family members in the ramada. Currently the city has no funding to move forward with Phase Two, which would complete the park. Public input DC RANCH for Phase Two showed NEIGHBORHOOD PARK desire for a playground for youth ages 6–12, an exercise circuit, sport courts, restrooms, additional parking and landscaping.

Several new buildings and tenants are new to the Corporate Center located in the southern portion of DC Ranch. The main entrance is on Palo Brea, just east of 91st Street. The area is zoned for industrial/office use to include warehousing. Most of the buildings are contemporary in design and six have been started or completed in the last year.

Pickleball coming to Village Health Club

DC Ranch Village Health Club & Spa is adding 12 pickleball courts to their popular tennis center facility, located at the southern end of Copper Ridge School. Known as the fastest growing sport in the country, pickleball is easy to learn and can be enjoyed by all ages. Construction is slated to begin before the end of the year. Until the courts are built, pickleball is being played on the Village’s indoor basketball courts on various days and times during the week.

A wide variety of businesses are located in the Corporate Center, from legal offices to an outdoor recreation company, to a stateof-the-art sports facility and a medical rehab center.

The Fetzer Surgical building is the newest to be completed. The company was formerly based in Chicago. In September, Provost Collective plans to open. Described as a luxury automobile management and storage facility with an exclusive social club, Provost purchased and will occupy two buildings. A three-tier auto storage system allows for storage of more than 140 cars, with some vehicles to be showcased in an expansive floor area. The social club includes a cigar lounge and bar service. Scottsdale Airport: A bird’s

Driving along Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard, it can be difficult to get a good look at Scottsdale Airport and the operations taking place inside the fence. Even sitting at the on-airport restaurant Volanti doesn’t quite reveal how the aircrafts flying into and out benefits the community.

THE EARLY DAYS Seeing the airport now can make it difficult to imagine its beginnings as a small piece of isolated desert. However, in 1942, the airport began as a basic training facility for WWII Army Corp pilots. The pilots trained here contributed to building the world’s most powerful aerial strike force.

After the war, Arizona State Teachers College (now ASU), acquired the airport in order to implement its own aviation program. Distance from the college campus and cost of operating an aviation program soon convinced the college to abandon its plans. The Arizona Conference of Seventh Day Adventists purchased the Airport in 1953 and established Thunderbird Academy to train missionary pilots. In 1963, the academy commissioned the first combined-use design of a clean industrial park surrounding an airport. By 1966, the city of Scottsdale acquired the airfield and shortly afterwards the first business jets landed at Scottsdale Airport.

OVER THE YEARS

Looking through the operational statistics over the years, there are some interesting trends.

From about 1995 to 2010, there was some up and down movement in operations with an average around 195,000 takeoffs and landings. In 1999, the highest operational numbers were recorded at 230,572. By 2010, the numbers took a dive to 133,419. Then there was a pretty steady upswing with total operations starting to build each year.

In 2021, there were 164,051 takeoffs and landings, though this lower number is attributed to the airport’s closure for 39 days due to a major runway rehabilitation project. In an interesting twist, business aviation operations hit an all-time high in 2021, even with a decrease in overall takeoffs and landings numbers. The use of business aviation at our airport appears to be on an upward trend. An early 2022 report by WingX, which tracks business aviation flight activity globally, ranked Scottsdale Airport fourth in the world for business aviation departures behind Palm Beach International, Teterboro and Miami-Opa Locka executive airports. This ranking was certainly driven by Scottsdale’s “high season” with events contributing to the spike in business aviation numbers.

SCOTTSDALE AIRPORT BRINGS SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTIONS

Scottsdale Airport serves as an important link within the national airspace, primarily as a reliever to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The airport is vital to the economy. It serves as an economic engine supporting employment centers, general aviation activities, tourism and sales dollars. The ADOT Aeronautics Group recently released the 2021 Arizona Aviation Economic Impact Study results. This provides insights into the significant economic contributions of Scottsdale Airport and the role it plays in bolstering benefits. Scottsdale aviation activity at the airport and in the Airpark created $1 billion in total economic

benefits for the region in FY 2019. Aviation activity supported 5,970 total jobs with incomes of $320 million. And catalytic or spin-off from non-aviation Airpark activity added benefits of $10 billion.

PROJECTING THE FUTURE

The airport recently completed an $11 million, grant-funded project, the Runway Rehabilitation. This project rehabilitated the aged runway in its entirety, although it did not increase its size nor weight capacity. An airport perimeter fence beautification project was also completed this year.

Other noteworthy privately funded airport projects, focusing on expanded hangar area, are under way with investments totaling over $56 million.

The next airport project is in design for an Aircraft Runup Project that will increase the number of holding bays for departing aircraft on the runway. This will increase the runway’s efficiency and safety. There are also other private property projects in the works in the Airpark. The big thing on the horizon is preparing for the upcoming Super Season this winter, with an exciting line-up of Arizona famous events and the addition of Super Bowl LVII in 2023.

As a public airport, the airport must remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. However, the airport strives to be a good community neighbor and observes a robust noise abatement program and procedures to minimize aircraft influences for neighbors. Recent years have brought an increase in home remodeling and construction. “As neighborhoods age, many people look to update their homes. Have you heard of Slovenia? This former Austro-

Hungarian country is nestled on the south side of the Austrian Alps and aptly termed Land of Dragons. Standing atop a promontory point on a stately medieval castle balcony, the view showcases fading sunset light filtering through layered mountain ranges. As rays highlight a tall white church steeple on a tiny island and glint across Lake Bled far below, one can easily imagine a dragon swooping through the hills and perching its serpentine body upon the gray crenelated castle lookout. Bled is a glacial lake fed by natural hot springs and a renowned national treasure. People stroll along its edge as rowers cross the lake in double sculls.

Slovenia’s long borders are Austria to the north and Croatia along the south, with short borders on the west with Italy and Hungary to the east. Slovenians are aware of their scenic beauty and serious about protecting it. Their forward-thinking society has put measures in place to protect both their heritage and future. With an over 90 percent high school completion rate, education is free to age 26, enabling ambitious students who wish for higher education the chance to greatly Ljubljana raise their pay.

The society here exudes a consciousness rarely seen other places. In the scenic Baroque capital of Ljubljana, for instance, farmers markets are every day. Shoppers can select colorful eggs labeled from their favorite farm through vending machines and fill glass bottles with fresh milk. City goers fill reusable drinking bottles from spring fed fountains. Plazas have five tidy, modern recycling and refuse receptacles where residents deposit items that fall into bins below the cobblestone streets. These receive glass, packaging, paper, residual waste and organic waste (compost) while keeping smells underground. As in Zagreb, a lovely river winds through town, lined with a promenade and threestory luxury townhomes, reminding one of Paris. The roadways are excellent, well-lit and well-marked. Large upright exit Lake Bled signs feature tasteful sepia photos depicting what can be found at each exit. Prices are far lower than the US and much of Europe, with the cost of living in major cities estimated around $1200 per person/month, including housing. JODI KAYE Why did you decide to become an NVM? I was asked to be an NVM in our neighborhood when our current NVM wanted to run for a board position. I love connecting with neighbors so I was happy to fill this role, which turned into an official NVM position when she was elected. I hope to be a great resource for sharing neighborhood information and concerns.

What is the best feature of your neighborhood? The best feature about our neighborhood is the community. Our kids have their best friends just a few doors down from us. I absolutely love the beauty of our parks and the way they help to connect our community through walking; getting outdoors with kids, pets, or exercise; or just stopping to say hi when driving through the neighborhood. We feel so lucky to be here and can’t imagine living anywhere else. I love to end the day with a walk up 102nd Street to catch one of our beautiful sunsets.

ANDREA BRIN Why did you decide to become an NVM? Upon completion of the inaugural Resident Leadership Academy, in the midst of the first wave of the pandemic, we were presented with ways to stay involved in the community. Becoming an NVM was one of the suggestions. The Academy provided the background to understand DC Ranch governance so when the NVM position became vacant for the 94th Way Gate I felt ready to step up to the plate knowing that I could serve my neighbors well.

What is the best feature of your neighborhood? Desert Camp Village is central to so many wonderful communities, paths, facilities and green belts. You can easily walk practically anywhere from here. The fact that Desert Camp Community Center is only a short distance, along with the athletic facilities and sports courts there, makes it an ideal location.

DR. MORGAN FRANCIS Why did you decide to become an NVM? I have always enjoyed DC Ranch. It is a wonderful community for families. I was encouraged to run by my neighbors since I take pride in effective communication and community development.

What is the best feature of your neighborhood? The Estates is such a welcoming neighborhood. We live on the park so I always see lots of activity outside the front window. I enjoy having my coffee and seeing kids run around and dogs playing together. Later in the afternoon there will be a game of dodgeball or soccer. In the evenings, parents gather on the playground to converse and we usually stay out there until dark. It is truly a wonderful experience.

The temperaturecontrolled pools are refreshing in the summer and warm in the winter so that members can swim all year long. The Arizona Concours d’Elegance returns as the highlight of Arizona

Car Week in January 2023, partnering with Scottsdale Arts to bring some of the world’s rarest and most valuable collector cars for display at Scottsdale Civic Center. The Concours will occupy the newly renovated Scottsdale Civic Center, bordered by Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA). Tickets for this extraordinary display of automotive design are now available through the Scottsdale Arts box office. Spectators are encouraged to purchase tickets early to avoid missing out. “Scottsdale Arts and the city of Scottsdale are thrilled to welcome this premier automotive event to our calendar of arts and entertainment,” said Dr. Gerd Wuestemann, president and CEO of Scottsdale Arts.

The Concours will invite about 100 select automobiles to be considered for judging and exhibition, with the best among them awarded class prizes and the coveted Best of Show.

The event, formerly held at the Arizona Biltmore Resort, is a curated and judged exhibition of select collector cars spanning all eras; the name Concours d’Elegance is a French term meaning “competition of excellence.” Arizona Car Week is the annual international gathering of high-powered collector car auctions and other automotive-related events.
