PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION A Type 67FR reduces inlet pressure to the correct pilot supply pressure. The supply pressure is controlled between the fixed restriction in the pilot supply pressure line and the pilot valve, and is applied between the pilot diaphragms, and on the underside of the main regulator diaphragm. The force developed by this loading pressure is opposed by the main regulator spring. A downstream pressure build-up registers on top of the upper pilot diaphragm, causing the pilot valve to close. This increases pressure in the diaphragm chamber, compressing main regulator spring, so that the main valve plug moves closer to the seat, reducing flow to the downstream system. When downstream demand increases, the pilot unloads the main diaphragm so that the spring forces the valve plug away from the seat, increasing flow to the downstream system. The pilot can unload the main diaphragm faster than it can be loaded through the restriction in the pilot supply pressure line. The upper diaphragm casing is vented to atmosphere.
INSTALLATION (See Cover Illustration and Figure 1.) If the valve body has screwed end connections, apply pipe compound to the pipeline threads before making the installation. If the body has flanged end connections, draw the bolts up evenly when installing. Install the valve with flow in the body. It is suggested that a bypass line be built around the main regulator, as shown.
CONTROL LINE CONNECTIONS Run a line from the upstream main line to the supply inlet of the 67FR and from the pilot control line connection to the downstream main pipeline. This connection should be at least three feet from the outlet of the control valve. Control piping should be at least 1/2 inch, and a globe valve should be installed in both the pilot and downstream control lines. Close both of these until the unit is ready to go into operation. To complete the installation, use the piece of tubing furnished, and make the loading pressure connection from the pipe tee between the pilot and the 67F to the connection on the adaptor piece of the actuator. See Figure 2.
TO PUT INTO OPERATION When the control valve is ready to go into service, follow this procedure. Open and close valves slowly. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

ADJUSTMENTS
CONTROL LINE CONNECTION
Type 298T The only adjustment for the Type 298T is on the Type 81 pilot. To make this adjustment, remove the pilot closing cap (Key 5, Figure 6) and rotate the adjusting screw. Turning it clockwise increases the controlled pressure setting; turning it counterclockwise reduces the controlled pressure setting.
SUPPLY INLET
Type 296 To adjust the 296, follow the procedure outlined above for the 298T. In addition, refer to the table below for proper setting of the main regulator adjusting screw. Before the main regulator adjusting screw can be set, the closing cap (Key 9, Figure 5) must be removed. See Table Below. LOADING PRESSURE CONNECTION
MAINTENANCE
Dwg. CN9906
Figure 2—Pilot and 67F Connections
Before attempting any maintenance, be sure to set the bypass valves so that the regulator is isolated from flow, and that all pressure is out of the valve body and actuator. Also, close the needle valve in the pilot supply line and in the downstream control line. Type 298T To disassemble the regulator, follow the procedure outlined below. See Figure 3. 1. Remove the pilot, pilot tubing (Key 27), mounting bar (Key 33) and differential pressure tubing (Key 25). 2. Remove screws (Key 55) which hold on travel indicator cover (Key 54), and take off cap (Key 9) and gauge glass (Key 45). 3. Unscrew travel indicator nut (Key 34) and remove it, and travel indicator disk (Key 48). 4. Loosen the closing cap (Key 8), relieving spring tension. 5. Take off the diaphragm case cap screws and nuts (Key 29 & 30) and remove the diaphragm case (Key 1) and spring case (Key 7).
6. To replace the spring case gasket (Key 12) separate the diaphragm and spring case. 7. Unscrew travel indicator stem (Key 26) from valve stem (Key 5). 8. Remove the stem nut (Key 18), stem locking clamp (Key 16). 9. Now revolve the diaphragm-diaphragm head assembly so that it unscrews from the valve stem (Key 5). 10. Next, remove set screws (Key 39), separate the diaphragm (Key 3), diaphragm head (Key 4) and adaptor (Key 14). Check the diaphragm and O ring (Key 20) and replace if necessary. 11. To inspect the seal bushing (Key 19) and seal bushing O ring (Key 38), remove the travel stop (Key 23), and retaining ring (Key 22). It may be necessary to take the distance piece (Key 32) off the valve body before the bushing can be removed. 12. Before reassembling, check the closing cap O ring (Key 10) and travel indicator closing cap O ring (Key 56).

BODY MAINTENANCE—See Figures 7 and 8 There are only three items in the Design AR or KR bodies which might require maintenance, the valve plug, seat rings or gaskets. Before either of these bodies can be disassembled, the actuator must be disassembled (See appropriate section under MAINTENANCE ) and the distance piece removed. Proceed as follows: 1. Remove the bottom flange on the AR body, and

the valve plug and stem assembly will be resting on the inside of the bottom flange, and will come out when the flange is removed. On the KR body, inspection of trim parts is done by removing the side flange. 2. With the distance piece and the bottom flange off, their gaskets can be inspected. It is suggested that these gaskets be replaced, even though they might appear to be in good condition. 3. Valve plug and seat rings can be inspected and replaced if necessary. The AR body valve plug and seat rings can be ground in, if they are nicked or rough. This procedure is outlined in a later section of this publication. Procedure for replacing seat rings is given below.
REPLACING SCREWED — IN SEAT RINGS Figure 10 shows a seat ring puller that can be purchased from Fisher Controls for the Design AR or KR bodies. Usually seat rings will be frozen in the body, making the replacement job a difficult one.
Dwg. CR6828 Figure 7—Design "AR" Body.
If a lathe or boring mill is on hand, it can be used to good advantage in removing the seat rings. If not, the seat ring puller should be utilized as follows: 1. After the body and actuator have been disassembled, place proper seat lug bar across the seat ring so that the bar contacts the seat lugs as shown in Figure 10. 2. Insert the drive wrench and place enough spacer rings over the wrench so that the hold down clamp rests about 1/4 inch above the body flange. 3. Slip the hold down clamp on the drive wrench and secure the clamp to the body with two bolts from the distance piece. Do not tighten the head bolts. 4. Unscrew the seat ring using the turning bar. Stubborn seat rings may require additional force on the turning bar. Slip a 3 foot to 5 foot cheater over one end of the turning bar and while applying a steady force, hit the other end of the bar with a heavy hammer as hard as possible to break the ring loose. In addition, a 24 inch or 36 inch pipe wrench can be used on the drive wrench near the hold down
Dwg. CR6829 Figure 8—Design "KR" Body.
Page 6 — Types 298T-81 & 296-81 clamp. Applying penetrating oil to the seat ring before attempting to remove it will facilitate the operation. 5. After seat ring is loose, alternately unscrew the flange bolts on the hold down clamp and continue to unscrew the seat ring. Before installing the new rings, thoroughly clean the threads in the body ports. Apply pipe compound to the threads of the new seat rings and screw them into the body using the seat ring puller, lathe or boring mill. Note that one of the seat rings is smaller than the other on a Design AR body. On a valve with push down to open action, the smaller ring should be installed from the bottom of the body in the top port. Remove all excess pipe compound after tightening the rings. Same valve bodies will have the screwed seat rings seal welded in the body. Cut away this weld before unscrewing the seat rings and re-weld the new rings after installation.
GRINDING IN SEAT RINGS For the grinding compound, use equal measures of No. 280 grain emery mixed DWG. CN1327 with solidified vegetable oil. When grinding Figure 9—Exstainless steel seat rings and valve plug, ploded "KR" apply white lead to the seat rings to prevent Valve Plug excessive cutting or tearing. The white lead should be applied separately. When grinding valves with Trim No. 6 or bronze trim, white lead is not required since galling is not a problem on these trims. On a double port body, the top ring grinds faster than the bottom ring. Under these conditions, continue to use grinding compound and white lead on the bottom ring but only a polishing compound (rottenstone and oil) on the top ring. If either of the ports continue to leak, use more grinding compound on the seat that is not leaking and polishing compound on the other seat. This procedure will grind down the seat that is not leaking so that both seats touch the surface at the same time. Never leave one seat dry while grinding the other. If possible, grind the valve while in the line. The problem of leakage due to line stresses and distortion when installing the valve in the line will thereby be minimized. After grinding, thoroughly clean all internal parts of the body and test for shut-off. Repeat grinding procedure, if required.
4. Hold the upper skirt from turning at the hexagon extension or skirt locknut and loosen the stem locknut (Part 17). Unscrew the upper skirt from the valve stem and remove it through the handhole opening. 5. Disassemble both skirts and replace the O rings. Be sure to replace the valve plug gasket (Key 10) when reassembling the upper skirt.
TO CONVERT A 298T To convert a conventional, normally closed Type 298T to a 298T normally open construction, proceed as follows: 1. A Type 81 pilot, installed as shown in Figure 1, must be used. 2. The valve body must be reverse acting so that if operating medium fails the valve plug will open. 3. The main spring might have to be changed, depending upon the operating conditions. Consult Fisher Sales Representative or Factory. 4. The upper travel stop (See Figure 4) will have to be replaced with lower travel stop. This can be done by following the disassembly procedure in the MAINTENANCE section. To convert a direct acting valve body to reverse acting, follow this procedure: 1. Remove actuator, distance piece and bottom flange. If this is a K body, remove the side flange. Figure 9 shows an exploded view of a KR valve plug. 2. Now take the body out of the line, invert it and put it back in the line. 3. If this is a Design A body, a new reverse acting valve plug and stem is required. Request this from the factory, specifying that reverse action is desired and furnishing the serial number of the body. 4. If this is a Design K body, unscrew the locknut on the stem, then unscrew the stem from the valve plug. TURNING BAR

Page 7 — Types 298T-81 & 296-81 A. When converting a K to a KR body, on sizes 1 inch through 3 inch, the same valve stem can be used. B. On sizes 4 inch through 8 inch, a longer valve stem is required. Request this from the factory, specifying reverse acting and furnishing the serial number of the valve body. 5. Reassemble the KR valve plug as shown in Figure 9. 6. The AR valve plug will come from the factory properly assembled. 7. Insert the valve plug stem first (either AR or KR ) into the bottom body opening. A. On the AR construction, replace bottom flange and gasket, distance piece and gasket, and the actuator. Make up pilot and control line
connections and the regulator is ready to go into service. B. On the Design KR the distance between the seats must be adjusted. With the top plug seated, turn the lower skirt in until it seats. Then tighten the locknut holding the skirt. Now replace bottom and side flanges and gaskets, and reassemble the distance piece and actuator. When the pilot connections and control lines are made, the unit is ready to go into operation.
