Introduction Scope of Manual This instruction manual provides information on installation, maintenance, and parts ordering for the Type 585 and 585R Size 100 piston actuators. Information for other equipment used with these actuators can be found in separate instruction manuals. W6295/IL

Description Figure 1. Type 585 Size 100 Actuator

Specifications Specifications for the Type 585 and 585R piston actuators are given in table 1. Some specifications for an individual actuator as it originally comes from the factory are stamped on a nameplate attached to the yoke.

D100296X012

The compact Type 585 and 585R pneumatic spring-and-piston actuators (figure 1) provide accurate throttling or on-off control of sliding-stem valves. Both types have a double-acting cylinder requiring pressure for opening as well as closing action. Type 585 actuator bias spring action fully retracts the piston stem upon loss of cylinder pressure, while Type 585R actuator bias spring action fully extends the piston stem upon loss of cylinder pressure. No additional parts are required to convert from one actuator type to the other.

Installation

WARNING WARNING

To avoid personal injury or property damage caused by bursting of pressure-retaining parts, be certain the cylinder pressure does not exceed the limits listed in table 1. Use pressure-limiting or pressure-relieving devices to prevent cylinder pressure from exceeding these limits. A Type 585 or 585R actuator is normally shipped mounted on a valve. Refer to the appropriate valve instruction manual when installing the valve in the pipeline. If you wish to mount a separately shipped actuator onto a valve, perform the procedures described in the Actuator Mounting section. If accessories are being added, refer to the Accessory Mounting and Connections section.

2

Dropping the actuator and any attached accessories and/or valve may cause personal injury and/or equipment damage. For all mounting procedures—regardless of lifting eye usage—use an adequately sized chain, sling, hoist, or crane to handle the actuator and any attached accessories and/or valve. Use caution during lifting and handling to prevent slippage, swinging, faulty equipment connections, or sudden shock loads. In the following procedure, the lifting eyes cannot support a pipeline attached to a valve/actuator assembly and must not be used for this kind of lifting. The size 100 actuator has two diagonally installed lifting eyes (key 70, figures 3, 4, and 5). When lifting the actuator, always apply a load along the plane of the lifting eye instead of at an angle to the lifting eye.

Shaded areas indicate where the listed supply pressure is not sufficient to overcome the opposing bias spring effect. 1. Maximum allowable thrust 16,100 lbf.

Actuator Mounting The following procedure describes how to mount a Type 585 or 585R actuator on either a push-to-close or push-to-open valve so that the piston stem and valve plug stem thread engagement allow full travel and proper shutoff. Key numbers referenced in the following steps are shown in figure 3 or 5 for the Type 585 actuator and in figure 4 for the Type 585R actuator. 1. If not already removed, remove the front yoke cover screws, front yoke cover, and stem connector assembly (keys 22, 20, and 15). For an actuator without springs, the anti-rotator arm (key 75) is fastened to the stem connector assembly with two cap screws. Remove the anti-rotator arm with the stem connector assembly. 2. Thread the stem connector nuts (key 16) onto the valve stem, and run the nuts to the bottom of the valve stem threads. 3. Push the valve plug stem as follows: D Until the valve plug is closed for push-to-close valve plug action, or

6

D Until the valve plug is fully open for push-to-open valve plug action. 4. Place the actuator on the bonnet of the valve and secure the actuator tightly to the bonnet with the yoke locknut, or with the actuator mounting cap screws (or studs and hex nuts) for an actuator with 127 mm (5-inch) yoke boss.

CAUTION Do not clamp just the tip of either the valve plug stem or the piston stem in the stem connector. Incomplete engagement of either or both may result in stripped threads or improper operation. Be sure that the length of each stem clamped in the stem connector assembly is equal to or greater than the diameter of that stem. In the following procedure, do not rotate the valve plug while it is seated since this may cause damage to the seating surface and thereby allow excessive leakage. Also, during adjustment, use

Type 585 and 585R tools carefully to avoid damaging the valve plug stem. A damaged valve plug stem could cut the packing and allow leakage. 5. Perform one of the following procedures (a, b, c, or d as appropriate): a. For a Type 585 actuator (figure 3 or 5) with push-to-close valve, apply pressure to the 1/4-inch NPT connection in the cylinder cover (key 3) until the piston (key 5) and piston stem (key 12) move down the specified travel. Secure the piston stem to the valve plug stem, with the stem connector assembly (key 15) clamped only finger-tight to allow adjustment. For an actuator without springs, fasten the anti-rotator arm (key 75) to the stem connector assembly (key 15) using two cap screws. Make certain the end of the anti-rotator arm fits into the groove of the anti-rotator bracket (key 74). Reduce cylinder pressure just enough to move the valve plug off the seat. Tighten the stem connector nuts (key 16) together, and use a wrench on these nuts to screw the valve plug stem into or out of the stem connector assembly for final travel adjustment. b. For a Type 585 actuator (figure 3 or 5) with push-to-open valve, manually move the valve plug to the seated position. Secure the piston stem (key 12) to the valve plug stem, with the stem connector assembly (key 15) clamped only finger-tight to allow adjustment. For an actuator without springs, fasten the anti-rotator arm (key 75) to the stem connector assembly (key 15) using two cap screws. Make certain the end of the anti-rotator arm fits into the groove of the anti-rotator bracket (key 74). Apply pressure to the 1/4-inch NPT connection in the cylinder cover (key 3) just enough to move the valve plug off the seat. Tighten the stem connector nuts (key 16) together, and use a wrench on these nuts to screw the valve plug stem two full turns into the stem connector assembly. c. For a Type 585R actuator (figure 4) with push-to-close valve, secure the piston stem (key 12) to the valve plug stem, with the stem connector assembly (key 15) clamped only finger-tight to allow adjustment. Apply pressure to the 1/4-inch NPT connection in the yoke (key 1) just enough to move the valve plug off the seat. Tighten the stem connector nuts (key 16) together, and use a wrench on these nuts to unscrew the valve plug stem two full turns out of the stem connector assembly. d. For a Type 585R actuator (figure 4) with push-to-open valve, apply pressure to the 1/4-inch NPT connection in the yoke (key 1) until the travel stop spacer (key 27) contacts the cylinder cover (key 3). Manually move the valve plug to the seated

position and secure the piston stem (key 12) to the valve plug stem, with the stem connector assembly (key 15) clamped only finger-tight to allow adjustment. Reduce cylinder pressure just enough to move the valve plug off the seat. Tighten the stem connector nuts (key 16) together, and use a wrench on these nuts to screw the valve plug stem two full turns into the stem connector assembly. 6. Tighten the two cap screws in the stem connector assembly (key 15). For an actuator without springs, make certain the end of the anti-rotator arm (key 75) fits into the groove of the anti-rotator bracket (key 74). 7. Tighten the stem connector nuts (key 16) against the stem connector assembly. 8. Cycle the actuator several times to check for proper operation. 9. Install the front yoke cover (key 20) and secure it with the front yoke cover screws (key 22).

Note In the following step, make sure the correct travel indicator scale (key 21) is used per the Parts List for the desired travel and valve action. 10. If necessary, reposition the travel indicator scale (key 21) so that the scale arrow points in the same direction as “opening valve plug travel. Remove the travel indicator scale screws (key 23). Position the scale with the OPEN mark, CLOSED mark, or arrow in the proper direction. Adjust the scale up or down so that the appropriate OPEN mark, CLOSED mark, or arrow part lines up with the red pin on the stem bracket assembly (key 13) showing through the scale slot. Secure the scale with the scale screws.

Accessory Mounting and Connections Key numbers referenced in this procedure are shown in figures 3 through 5 unless otherwise indicated. A Type 585 or 585R actuator normally comes from the factory with a positioner or solenoid valve installed. However, if either a positioner or solenoid valve must be field-installed, then install the appropriate tubing into the 1/4-inch NPT connections in the cylinder cover and yoke (keys 3 and 1). With a positioner, also remove the blanking plate screws and blanking plate (keys 25 and 24) and install the positioner according to the appropriate instruction manual.

7

Type 585 and 585R A Type 585 or 585R actuator may come from the factory with a Type 304, 4200 Series, GO Series, or other accessory installed. If such an accessory must be field-installed, remove the back yoke cover screws (key 22) and the back yoke cover (key 18). Then refer to figure 2 while performing one of the following procedures. Also refer to the appropriate accessory instruction manual, if necessary. 1. For a 4200 Series accessory, position the adaptor plate on the actuator stem bracket assembly (key 13) and secure with the mounting screws. Then guide the pickup pin into the adaptor plate slot while installing the accessory mounting plate on the actuator yoke.

Note In the above procedure, the adaptor plate must be correctly positioned on the stem bracket assembly index mark to provide the proper travel feedback. Be sure to use the correct adaptor plate indent number according to the figure 2 information. If 19 through 51 mm (3/4 through 2-inches) of travel is required, rotate the adaptor plate 180 degrees from the position shown in figure 2 so that indents 1 through 4 may be positioned on the stem bracket assembly index mark. 2. For a Type 304 or GO Series switch, turn the operating arm screw into hole 1, 2, 3, or 4 of the actuator stem bracket assembly (key 13) according to figure 2. Then, guide the operating arm onto the operating arm screw while installing the accessory mounting plate on the actuator yoke.

Maintenance Actuator parts are subject to normal wear and must be inspected and replaced as necessary. The frequency of inspection and replacement depends on the severity of service conditions. This section provides procedures for replacing seals, changing action, and changing the bias spring(s).

8

WARNING Avoid personal injury from sudden release of process pressure. Before performing any maintenance operations: D Always wear protective gloves, clothing, and eyewear when performing any maintenance operations to avoid personal injury. D Disconnect any operating lines providing air pressure, electric power, or a control signal to the actuator. Be sure the actuator cannot suddenly open or close the valve. D Use bypass valves or completely shut off the process to isolate the valve from process pressure. Relieve process pressure on both sides of the valve. Drain the process media from both sides of the valve. D Vent the power actuator loading pressure and release all bias spring compression force by slowly unscrewing the cylinder cover bolting in a crisscross pattern. D Use lock-out procedures to be sure that the above measures stay in effect while you work on the equipment. D The valve packing box may contain process fluids that are pressurized, even when the valve has been removed from the pipeline. Process fluids may spray out under pressure when removing the packing hardware or packing rings, or when loosening the packing box pipe plug. Key numbers are referenced in figure 3 for a Type 585 actuator with springs, in figure 4 for a Type 585R actuator, and in figure 5 for a Type 585 actuator without springs. Isolate the control valve from the line pressure, release pressure from both sides of the valve body, and drain the process media from both sides of the valve. Shut-off all pressure lines to the power actuator, release all pressure from the actuator, and release all bias spring compression force by slowly unscrewing the cylinder cover bolting in a crisscross pattern. Use lock-out procedures to be sure that the above measures stay in effect while you work on the equipment.

If you need to inspect or replace the piston stem, O-ring, or bearing (key 10 or 11), perform steps 8 through 11. Otherwise skip to step 12, being sure to comply with the note preceding step 12. 8. Loosen the two cap screws in the stem connector assembly (key 15) and remove it. For an actuator without springs, the anti-rotator arm (key 75) is fastened to the stem connector assembly with two cap screws. Remove the anti-rotator arm with the stem connector assembly. Separate the piston stem (key 12) from the valve plug stem if the actuator is mounted on a valve. 9. Loosen the stem bracket retainer set screw (key 51). Remove the stem connector spacers and washers (keys 71 and 72) and the stem bracket retainer and stem bracket assembly (keys 14 and 13).

10

10. To inspect the piston stem bearing or piston stem O-ring (key 11 or 10), remove the piston stem (key 12) from the yoke (key 1). Replace these parts if necessary, applying Lubriplate MAG-1 lubricant (key 32) or equivalent to the replacement O-ring or bushing and installing them into the yoke. 11. Install the piston stem through the yoke and slip the stem connector washers and spacers (keys 72 and 71) over the male threaded end of the piston stem. Slide the stem bracket assembly (key 13) onto the piston stem (key 12) and align it parallel to the back yoke cover (key 18). Install the stem bracket retainer (key 14) and tighten to 26 NSm (20 lbfSft). Tighten the stem bracket retainer set screw (key 51) to keep the stem bracket retainer tightly threaded. Note Make certain the travel indicator scale (key 21) correctly matches the travel stop (key 27) and valve action per the Parts List. 12. To achieve the desired construction (either a direct-acting Type 585 actuator or a reverse-acting Type 585R actuator), perform one of the following assembly procedures (a or b as appropriate): a. For a Type 585 actuator (figure 3 or 5), center the smaller bias spring (key 8 per table 2 or 3) around the piston stem (key 12). If used per table 2 or 3, center the larger bias spring (key 9) around the smaller bias spring. For all actuators except those with 102 mm (4-inches) travel, put the travel stop spacer (key 27) onto the piston stem. Then put the piston (key 5) onto the travel stop spacer or piston stem and put the piston washer (key 73) and spring stop, if used, (key 77) onto the piston. Apply Lubriplate MAG-1 lubricant (key 32) or equivalent to the threads of the piston cap screw (key 19). Insert the piston cap screw through the piston washer, piston, and travel stop spacer, if used, and into the piston stem. Tighten the piston cap screw to 610 NSm (450 lbfSft) of torque. b. For a Type 585R actuator (figure 4), put the piston (key 5) and spring stop (key 77) onto the piston stem. For all actuators except those with 102 mm (4-inches) travel, put the travel stop spacer (key 27) onto the piston. Then put the piston washer (key 73) onto the travel stop spacer or piston. Apply Lubriplate MAG-1 lubricant (key 32) or equivalent to the threads of the piston cap screw (key 19). Insert the piston cap screw through the piston washer, travel stop spacer if used, and piston and into the piston stem. Tighten the piston cap screw to 610 NSm (450 lbfSft) of torque. 13. For a Type 585R actuator only (figure 4), center the smaller bias spring (key 8 per table 4 or 5) around

Type 585 and 585R the piston stem. If used per table 4 or 5, center the larger bias spring (key 9) around the smaller bias spring.

Parts List

14. Install the piston O-ring (key 7), if it was removed from the piston, and the bottom cylinder O-ring (key 7), if it was removed from the yoke (key 1). Apply Lubriplate MAG-1 lubricant (key 32) or equivalent to the wall of the cylinder (key 2) and carefully slide the cylinder over the piston O-ring. Square the cylinder in place around the bottom cylinder O-ring.

Common Parts for Type 585 and 585R Size 100 Actuators (figures 3 through 5)

15. Install the top cylinder O-ring (key 7) onto the cylinder cover (key 3). Put the cylinder cover squarely onto the cylinder, lining up the cover holes with the yoke holes. Be sure that the pressure connection in the cylinder cover is located on the same side as the pressure connection in the yoke.

Note When placing the cylinder cover onto the cylinder and torquing down the cylinder cap screws or nuts, be sure to keep the cylinder cover square and aligned with the top of the yoke. 16. Lubricate the cylinder studs (key 4) with Lubriplate MAG-1 lubricant (key 32) or equivalent. Install the cylinder stud nuts (key 34) while alternately tightening each cylinder stud nut to a torque of 570 NSm (420 lbfSft). Then install the lifting eyes (key 70) diagonally across from each other on two of the cylinder stud nuts until secure against the stud nuts. 17. If the actuator will be mounted on a valve, perform the appropriate actuator mounting procedure. Otherwise, for actuators without springs, fasten the anti-rotator arm (key 75) to the stem connector assembly (key 15) if the anti-rotator arm was removed. Then, install the stem connector assembly and tighten its two cap screws. For an actuator without springs, make certain the end of the anti-rotator arm (key 75) fits into the groove of the anti-rotator bracket (key 74). Install the stem connector nuts (key 16), and tighten these nuts against the stem connector assembly.
