Instruction Manual Form 1347 October 1997
Type 603
Type 603 Pump Governor Actuator Introduction Scope of Manual This instruction manual provides information on installation, adjustment, maintenance, and parts ordering for the Type 603 pump governor actuator. Refer to separate instruction manuals for information about the valve and other accessories used with these actuators. Only personnel qualified through training or experience should install, operate, and maintain the Type 603 pump governor actuator. If you have any questions about these instructions, contact your Fisher Controls sales office or sales representative before proceeding.
Description The Type 603 pump governor (figure 1) is a combination of a spring and piston actuator and any of several push-down-to-close (pdtc) sliding-stem valves. These pump governors are used to maintain a constant discharge on steam driven turbine or reciprocating pumps. The pumps typically deliver liquids under pressure to hydraulic presses, accumulators, rolling mills, and other hydraulic equipment. W3308*

The Type 603 actuator may also be combined with push-down-to-open (pdto) valves to be used as relief governors. Relief governors are used to divert excess pump discharge back to the suction side of the pump.
Type 603 Maintenance Actuator parts are subject to normal wear and must be inspected and replaced when necessary. The frequency of inspection and replacement depends on the severity of service conditions. Because of the care Fisher Controls takes in meeting all manufacturing requirements (such as heat treating and dimensional tolerances), use only replacement parts manufactured or furnished by Fisher Controls.
WARNING Avoid personal injury or property damage from sudden release of process pressure or bursting of parts. Before performing any maintenance operations:

D Disconnect any operating lines providing air pressure, electric power, or a control signal to the actuator. Be sure the actuator cannot suddenly open or close the valve.
best to put this connection between 10 and 20 feet away from the pump discharge, and in the top or side of the discharge main. This prevents dirt or pipe scale from entering the control line. A needle valve should be put in this line, and closed.
D Use bypass valves or completely shut off the process to isolate the valve from process pressure. Relieve process pressure from both sides of the valve. Drain the process media from both sides of the valve.
If the fluid being handled is corrosive, the control line must be installed so that it slants towards the pump governor. Then fill the line with oil or glycerin to form a liquid seal between the corrosive fluid and the pump governor.
D Vent the power actuator loading pressure and relieve any actuator spring precompression.
The maximum allowable pressure in the actuator cylinder is 4,600 psig on the one-inch cylinder, and 2,000 psig on the one and one-half inch size.
D Use lock-out procedures to be sure that the above measures stay in effect while you work on the equipment.

Installation Refer to figure 2. Install the actuator-body combination in the line so that flow is in the direction indicated by the arrow cast on the valve body. To prolong the service life of the valve body, install a strainer, such as a Fisher Controls Type 260C in the line ahead of the valve body. Follow good piping practices when making the installation. Install a by-pass line around the valve, so that the pump can remain in operation if the valve has to be shut down for maintenance. A 1/2 inch control line should be connected between the control line connection on top of the cylinder (key 8, figure 3) and the discharge main of the pump. It is

Open the needle valve in the control line one turn. Now open the globe valve between the governor and the steam chest, and close the by-pass valve. Slowly open the valve ahead of the governor, admitting steam to the valve, which is held open by the spring. The governor will now begin operating. Always use the hand operated throttle when starting or stopping the pump.
Adjustment Adjustment of the discharge pressure is made by turning the adjusting screw (key 5, figure 3) into the yoke (key 1) to increase, or out of the yoke to decrease the discharge pressure. If the governor is not giving smooth control, use the needle valve in the control line, to throttle supply pressure until the pulsations are eliminated.
Type 603 Maintenance Refer to figure 3. There are three maintenance items on the Type 603, keys 6, 11 and 16. Keys 11 and 16 can be replaced by unscrewing the cylinder (key 8) after removing the control line. With the cylinder off, these parts are accessible. To replace the O-ring, key 6, follow this procedure:
1. Take the stem connection apart. 2. Unscrew the cylinder (key 8). 3. Pull the piston and piston rod out of the assembly. 4. O-ring (key 6) can now be removed. 5. Re-make the stem connection and test for tight shut-off. If the valve does not shut-off tightly, lengthen the stem by unscrewing it until tight shut-off is obtained.
Parts Ordering Each actuator has a serial number stamped on the nameplate. Always mention this number when corresponding with your Fisher Controls sales office or sales representative regarding technical information or replacement parts. Also, reference the complete 11-character part number of each needed part as found in the following Parts List. BF6468 / DOC
