Bulletin 51.1:CP
February 2001
Design CP Control Valve Design CP control valves (figure 1) are globe-style, single-port valves with integral flanges, stem guiding, clamped-in seat rings, and quick-change trim. The Design CP control valve is available with a variety of full-size and restricted capacity trims and various materials ranging from steel to high-nickel alloys. To eliminate cavitation damage in a properly-sized 1-1/2 through 4-inch valve, a CavitrolR III cage is available. To help attenuate aerodynamic noise in gaseous service, Whisper TrimR seat ring retainers are available on 1-1/2 through 4-inch valves.
Features D Compact/Light Weight— The Design CP control valve is designed specifically for Class 150 and 300 service. D ENVIRO-SEALR Stem Sealing to EPA Requirements— Design CP valves are available with ENVIRO-SEAL packing (see figures 4 and 5). ENVIRO-SEAL packing systems provide a superior stem seal to prevent the loss of valuable or hazardous process fluid. They feature live-loading for reduced packing maintenance and can control emissions to below the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) minimum of 500 ppm (parts per million). Fisher also offers a unique ENVIRO-SEAL bellows seal system for 1/2x1- through 4-inch valves (figure 6) for toxic or lethal service. D Superior Alloy Service Life— Premium high alloy Design CP control valves give longer service life which could result in a lower total cost of ownership. W6507–1 / IL

D Integral Flange Design— The Design CP control valve integral flange is available in WCC steel, CF3M (316L stainless steel), and various alloys. The integral flange design offers increased safety and improved ease of maintenance over other designs, such as separable flange.

Features (continued) D Application Flexibility—The Design CP control valve accepts a full range of equal percentage and linear valve plugs designed to handle a wide range of flow requirements. Restricted trims can be easily replaced with full-capacity trims by replacing only the valve plug/stem and seat ring. D Bidirectional Flow Capability— Bidirectional flow allows flow up or flow down to take advantage of fluid dynamics in actuator sizing for fail closed applications.
2
D Flow Efficiency—Streamlined bidirectional flow passages allow smaller port diameters, which require lower actuator forces. Also, the flow passage is designed to provide self-flushing action, avoiding buildup of deposits on trim surfaces. D Self-Aligning Trim— The concentricity of the trim aligns the valve plug and seat ring for tight shutoff. This allows for ease of maintenance and assures proper alignment, giving the required shutoff for the specified leak classes. D Packing Components— The Design CP control valve uses seal ring components that are standardized with other Fisher products. D Easy Parts Identification—Trim parts are marked to show valve size, material, and part number. Plug and stem assemblies are also marked with flow characteristic and flow coefficient. D Valve Plug Stability—For 1/2 and 3/4-inch valves, the valve plug packing guide is maintained by constant Belleville loading. This ensures valve plug stability. For 1/2x1- through 4-inch valves, two rugged, widely spaced packing box guide bushings and an oversized valve stem are provided to stabilize and guide the valve plug throughout its travel. This reduces vibration and mechanical noise. D Longer Life—Many alloys and hardened materials are available in the Design CP control valve to increase valve body, bonnet, and trim life.

1. These materials are not listed in ASME B16.34. 2. The designations 150 and 300 are used only to indicate relative pressure-retaining capabilities and are not ANSI pressure-temperature rating class designations. 3. Alloy 20 is rated in ASME B16.34 to 149_C (300_F). Fisher extends the rating to 427_C (800_F).

1. Refer to the valve specifications in this bulletin for pressure/temperature limits of valve parts. Do not exceed the pressure/temperature rating of the valve. Do not exceed any applicable code or standard limitation. 2. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set a limit of 500 parts per million (ppm) for fugitive emissions from a valve in selected VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) services. 3. In vacuum service, it is not necessary to reverse the ENVIRO-SEAL PTFE packing rings.
