HF200 Series
FIELDVUE HF200 Series HART Filters Scope of Manual This instruction manual includes installation and maintenance information for the FIELDVUE HF200 Series HART filters. Refer to separate manuals for additional information on other FIELDVUE products used with the HART filters, such as the Type DT4000 digital transducer, DVC5000 Series digital valve controllers, and the Type 2530H1 HART interchange multiplexer. Control system refers to a distributed control system (DCS), programmable logic controller (PLC), or a stand-alone controller that provides a control signal to the FIELDVUE instrument. Only personnel qualified through training or experience should install, adjust, and maintain the HF200 Series HART filters. If you have any questions concerning these instructions contact your Fisher Controls sales office or sales representative before proceeding.
Description The HF200 Series HART filters are used with HARTbased FIELDVUE instrumentation, such as the Type DT4000 digital transducer or the DVC5000 Series digital valve controllers. These filters are used when this instrumentation is connected to a 4 to 20 mA dc control system output that was not designed for use with the HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) communication protocol. The HF200 Series HART filters are active devices that are inserted in-line with both wires of a HART 4 to 20 mA dc output loop. The purpose of the filter is to effectively isolate the control system analog output from modulated HART communication signals. The filter receives a 4 to 20 mA dc current signal from the control system and drives the loop as a high impedance current source. The filter output current is a filtered

replica of the input current. The current drive stage of the filter prevents the voltage modulation in the HART loop from being seen by, or having an affect on, the control system output. The filter also prevents the control system output from interfering with the HART communication. To perform the intended function, the filter requires a small amount of operating current (40 to 60 microamps) and an input-to-output voltage drop of 2.3 volts. The filter is normally installed near the field wiring terminals of the control system I/O. HART communication is only possible between the filter and the field instrument, not on the control system side of the filter. The filter is not designed for or intended for use in the process environment. Neither the filter nor its outputs are approved for hazardous areas. However, a recommended intrinsic safety barrier can be connected between the FIELDVUE instrument and the filter in intrinsically safe installations. A Type HJ200 HART junction box can be used with the HART filters. The junction box permits using a single multi-wire cable to interconnect with the Type 2530H1 HART Interchange multiplexer. The junction box provides a common collection point for individual HART communication signals and multiplexes those signals into a 37-pin D-shell connector output, which can be cabled directly to the HART Interchange multiplexer. For more information on connecting the filters to a Type 2530H1 HART interchange multiplexer, see the Type 2530H1 HART Interchange Multiplexer Instruction Manual. The junction box is normally installed near the filters and control system output. The standard multi-wire cable allows the HART Interchange multiplexer to be located remotely from the filters and control system outputs.
Specifications Typical specifications for the HF200 Series HART filters are shown in Table 1.

If using shielded wiring on both sides of the filter, the shield should connect across the filter. If the filter connects directly to the control system output and shielded loop wiring is being used, connect the shield to system ground on the instrument side of the filter.
HART Wiring Connections In all filter cases, the communications channel wires can be connected to a HART Interchange multiplexer, either directly or through a Type HJ200 junction box. The communication channel wires also may be temporarily connected to a handheld communicator or left unconnected. The Type HF210, HF220, and HF230 filters are supplied with a pre-wired cable. The DIN-rail mount filter has a terminal block to allow for user installed wiring. As illustrated in Figure 5, the junction box printed wiring board has two connectors (J1 and J2) for connecting the 2-conductor plugs from the individual filters. The silk screen on the printed wiring board indicates two channel numbers for each filter connection. Channel numbers 1 through 16 designate the channel number if the interconnecting cable between the junction box and the multiplexer is connected to the 37-pin connector on the multiplexer labeled LOOPS 1-16.

Bench Adjustment
19 VOLTS DC COMPLIANCE VOLTAGE
Set the switch on the filter to a setting that is closest to, but less than, the control system compliance voltage, as indicated in Table 2. Figure 6 shows the factory switch settings for the filter. The control system compliance voltage is the maximum voltage the control system can provide at maximum current. If unsure of the control system compliance voltage, perform the following compliance voltage test. 1. Connect equipment as shown in Figure 7.
W6522/IL
Figure 6. Filter Switch Settings as Shipped from the Factory
Channel numbers 17 through 32 designate the channel number if the interconnecting cable between the junction box and the multiplexer is connected to the 37-pin connector on the multiplexer labeled LOOPS 17-32. The HART communications cable from the filter can be plugged into any channel connector. A standard, straight through, 37-pin D-shell male-tomale cable connects between the junction box and the HART Interchange multiplexer. This cable is available in standard lengths up to 100 feet.
2. Set the control system to provide maximum output current. 3. Increase the resistance of the 1 kilohm potentiometer, shown in Figure 7, until the current observed on the milliammeter begins to drop quickly. 4. Record the voltage shown on the voltmeter. This is the control system compliance voltage.
Installed Adjustment After installing the filter and setting it for the proper voltage, if it appears not to be working properly, this procedure may be used to adjust the filter for proper operation with the actual control system, wiring, and instrument connected. 1. Connect the equipment as shown in Figure 8.
Filter Adjustment The filters are factory adjusted for a control system compliance voltage of 19 volts at 22 mA. If the control system compliance voltage is greater than 19 volts and the terminal voltage (available) at the instrument is 12 volts dc, minimum, the filter does not need to be readjusted. Use the guidelines given in PS Sheet 62.1:FIELDVUE(A) to calculate the terminal voltage (available).
2. Set the control system to the maximum current output. 3. Adjust the switch on the filter to obtain a voltmeter reading that is 0.5 volts below the compliance voltage of the control system. Record this reading. 4. Connect the voltmeter to the output of the filter and verify the voltage read is at least 2.3 volts below the voltage recorded in step 3. If the voltage difference is not 2.3 volts, you may have inadequate control system compliance voltage for the filter to operate properly.

TO INSTRUMENT OR INTRINSIC SAFETY BARRIER
HF200 Series Corrective Maintenance The most likely malfunction of an HF200 Series HART filter is reverse polarity installation. If the filter appears to be shorting out the loop current rather than delivering it to the instrument, check the polarity of the voltage at the inputs and outputs of the filter and at the inputs of the instrument. If the polarities are correct and there is still a problem, follow the adjustment procedure in this manual. If a filter’s input is adjusted higher than the control system output compliance voltage, the symptom is no output from the filter. In this case, the filter requires more voltage than the control system can produce. The control system will not be putting out the desired current and may exhibit a readback failure and generate an alarm.
If a filter’s input is adjusted too low, it will supply the proper DC current, but will not support communications in all circumstances. A low input adjustment produces a low filter output compliance voltage. Any time the load (the instrument and all other series resistance) requires more voltage to reach maximum current than the output compliance of the filter, the filter will not exhibit the required high impedance to communications and communications will fail. Inadequate loop voltage will not support filter operation. This is an installation problem that may appear initially to be a filter malfunction. For the filter to operate properly, the control system must have a compliance voltage that is at least 2.3 volts higher than the voltage required to drive the loop to maximum current.
