A Guide to DCON Awards


Why Participation In Awards Is Important? • Creates friendly competition between clubs to create the best projects and raise the most funds for Eliminate. • Allows us to see what is being done in the divisions throughout the Rocky Mountain District • Winning projects have the chance of getting International Recognition at ICON • The different awards provide a natural framework for the planning and execution of projects and events


The Early Bird Award What is it? The Early Bird Award is awarded to all Key Clubs in the Rocky Mountain District that successfully turns in dues before the November 1st deadline. Clubs are given a small rubber duck as a reward. The club with dues in first receive the big duck trophy.

Common Questions? • I’m not sure when dues are due. • What is the importance of turning dues in early? • Do I have to have my members logged under the Membership Update Center?

Distinguished Club Award What is this? This award recognizes Distinguished Clubs in our district based on their performance, leadership, and dedication to service. Clubs must fill out the Annual Achievement form in order to be eligible for this award. This form should be filled out by every club no matter what.

Common Issues/ Questions? • Failure to properly document achievement • Should I be keeping track of this all year long? • What is a Diamond Level Key Club? • Inconsistent point totals and/or failure to log points for categories.


Monthly Report Award What is it? This award will be awarded to the Key Club that complete the most club reports before DCON. This award will be graded on quality of report, number of reports, and timeliness of reports. The winner of this award will receive a trophy similar to the early bird award (to be determined

Common Issues/ Questions? • LTG fails to forward club reports to District Admins and Officers • Reports are basic and don’t go into much detail • Club reports are filed way after the end of the month that is being reported on.


Year In Review Scrapbooks What is it? There are two forms of scrapbooks that can be entered at DCON: traditionally and nontraditionally. Traditional scrapbooks are your run of the mill scrapbooks while non-traditional contain scrapbook elements in a unique form. Both need to be properly labelled and contain a price sheet.

Common Issues/ Questions: • Lack of entries • Failure to divide scrapbook into proper categories. • Lack of explanation regarding pictures/pages. • Lack of unique designs. Exp: uses typical scrapbook paper for everything.


Poster Contest What is it? There are two categories of posters: digital and nondigital. Digital entries consist of graphically designed posters using computer elements. NonDigital posters can’t use any digital elements including pictures. Posters must have an attached form and be 18 by 24 inches.

Common issues/ questions: • Lack of entries • Posters contain elements to advertise for one club. Must be for Key Club in general • Don’t fit proper dimensions • Mixes the two poster categories into one poster earning disqualification.


Video Contest Award What is it? This digital video must advertise Key Club as a whole. It should not exceed 60 seconds or be less than 55 seconds. No club can exceed 300$ for their video submission and must submit the required video price form. Music cannot be copyrighted or disqualification will occur.

Common Issues/ Questions: • Doesn’t get music without a copyright • Video too long or too short • Video fails to advertise Key Club as a whole • Video isn’t put on a DVD with quicktime capability.


Major Emphasis Award What is it? This award focuses on the Kiwanis Major Emphasis Goal: to help the children of the world. One club is awarded this award based on their project(s) that focus on this goal. Awards must be types and follow the basic requirements as stated on the Major Emphasis award sheet.

Common Issues/ Questions: • Doesn’t follow the formatting required for the award. • What counts as a Major Emphasis project? • Doesn’t focus on children • What makes a project earning of this award?


Single Service Award What is it? This award is given to clubs that perform an exemplary service project on one day, several days, or on consecutive days. A formal report is required and awards will be judged based on membership size into 4 categories of award winners.

Common Issues/ Questions: • Failure to properly advertise single service events • Single Service Project doesn’t fit qualifications • Formatting isn’t proper on application • What is a Single Service project? • Lack of applications and submissions.


Distinguished Club Officers What is it? These awards are given to the distinguished officers of the Rocky Mountain District. Each award is being hand-tailored and redone to fit each position: president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and webmaster. There are a few things each position can do till those are out.

Common Issues/ Questions: • Failure to include a service hour log and letter of recommendation. • Fails to cite what they did for each category of the award. • Why is this award so hard to get? • Lack of submissions.
