IMPROVED DRIVING PERFORMANCE Boost fleet efficiency with predictive real-time driving advice that empowers employees to improve driving behaviour. With petrol costs shooting through the roof, the good news is that companies can improve their fuel consumption with OptiDrive 360 from TomTom Telematics. The next generation of WEBFLEET OptiDrive now includes predictive real-time driving advice. Pre-trip, OptiDrive 360 provides motorists with best practice advice on how to drive more safely and fuel efficiently. Direct feedback and driving advice is offered in real-time during the trip to actively coach the driver. The system uses vehicle and map data to advise drivers when to take their foot off the accelerator or shift gear and what their optimum speed should be. After the trip a snapshot analysis is available to review the trip statistics. All information is displayed via the driver terminal. OptiDrive 360 scores drivers based on a total of eight performance indicators - speeding, driving events, idling, fuel consumption, green speed, coasting (where you release the accelerator pedal in gear), gear shifting and constant speed - which can be used as the basis for performance reviews, training and driver benchmarking. WEBFLEET provides managers with dashboards that allow them to highlight trends in driving behaviour. A series of in-depth reports then enables them to drill deeper for greater analysis and to compare the whole fleet. BENEFITS OF OPTIDRIVE 360 • Reduced costs Can help to reduce fuel, maintenance and insurance costs, lowering the total vehicle ownership costs. • Increased sustainability Can contribute towards proving your environmental responsibility by demonstrating your effort to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. • With increased driver safety in mind Real-time feedback and advice on safer driving contributes towards fewer accidents and maintenance downtime. • More relaxed drivers With a better driving style drivers will arrive at the customer relaxed and ready to work. HOW OPTIDRIVE 360 WORKS OptiDrive 360 helps drivers adopt a responsible driving style. It provides valuable insights to both the fleet manager and the driver — delivering direct feedback to drivers before, during and after their trip. Responsible driving helps you to lower fuel, maintenance and insurance premiums, thus helping to reduce the total costs of vehicle ownership for your business. DRIVING PERFORMANCE INSIGHTS OptiDrive 360 actively provides real-time feedback and advice to improve driving performance. Fleet managers and drivers get tailored driving insights on up to eight OptiDrive performance indicators. SPEEDING Information about what the speed limit is, and if drivers are driving within it. DRIVING EVENTS Reports on harsh steering and sudden breaking. IDLING Information on idling time and associated fuel waste. FUEL Real-time and average fuel consumption. CONSTANT SPEED Reports on speed fluctuations in driving performance. COASTING (WHERE YOU RELEASE THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IN GEAR) Drivers can be advised to release the accelerator when approaching a coasting zone. GREEN SPEED Get an advised speed, based on fuel efficiency and the speed limit. GEAR SHIFT Advice on how appropriate gear changing can optimise vehicle efficiency. Isuzu set to take over GM’s plant Truck manufacturer Isuzu is set to take over General Motors’ assembly plant in Port Elizabeth following a decision by the American automaker to quit South Africa. Isuzu’s senior executive officer for sales, Haruyasu Tanishige, said in addition to the plant – which is located at Struandale – the Japanese company would purchase GM’s 30% shareholding in Isuzu Truck South Africa (Pty) Limited. Tanishige said that subject to regulatory approval, Isuzu would produce its light commercial KB range at Struandale, the deal also giving the company control of GM’s Parts Distribution Centre and Vehicle Conversion and Distribution Centre. Isuzu already produces medium and heavy commercial trucks in South Africa, using Port Elizabeth as a base. Tanishige said Isuzu’s intention was to set up a dedicated dealer network to market, distribute and service light commercial vehicles for existing and new Isuzu customers. “We are committed to the South African market,” he said. “Integration of our light commercial and medium- and heavy-duty commercial business will strengthen our base to grow here.” According to Tanishige, Isuzu’s long term aim was to build a strong base in Africa. “Evidence of this is our recent buy-out of GM’s 57,7% shareholding our joint venture in Kenya, which has given us management control of the company.

“Integrating the South African light commercial vehicle operations into our business is the next step in laying the foundation for our growth plans in the future.” By the end of the year, GM intends to have ceased making and marketing Chevrolet vehicles locally. Making the announcement, Stefan Jacoby, the company’s president of international operations, said after a thorough assessment, he believed that it would be best if Isuzu integrated the manufacture of its light commercial KB range into its African business. “We determined that GM’s continued or increased investment in manufacturing in South Africa would not provide us with the expected returns of other global investment opportunities,” he said. Ian Nicholls, president of GM South Africa, said subject to consultation with employees and unions, the company would cease to manufacture and supply Chevrolet vehicles to the domestic market by the end of 2017. “Following the recent announcement of the sale of Opel/Vauxhall to the PSA Group, GM continues to work with PSA to evaluate future opportunity for the Opel brand in South Africa. Importantly, existing Chevrolet and Opel customers will continue to be supported in the market,” he said. Nicholls emphasised that the decision to sell had not been made lightly. “We appreciate the support that our employees, customers, dealers, suppliers, the government

Brand Pretorius for TruckX Brand Pretorius will deliver one of the keynote addresses at this year’s TruckX Expo and Conference to be held on July 12 and 13 at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit near Johannesburg. The business leader – who is a former managing director of Toyota SA Marketing, CEO of McCarthy Retail Limited and an executive director of Bidvest – will address the topic: The Value of Good Leadership. TruckX, sponsored by Ctrack by Inseego and Standard Bank, moves to the Kyalami venue to accommodate an expanded exhibition and conference programme that includes FleetX and IMHX – co-located expos aimed at South Africa’s fleet and materials handling industries. “I’m looking forward to delivering my presentation,” said Brand, who has received numerous national marketing, motor industry and leadership awards in a career that spans more than four decades.

His address will cover a variety of aspects, from the real value of good leadership to the current reality; from key lessons he learnt while climbing the corporate ladder to challenges faced. GM’s decision followed announcement of the company’s evolving strategy to focus investment and engineering efforts on profitable markets. Along with its pull-out from South Africa, the company planned to stop selling vehicles in India by the end of the year, which it said would save it about $100-million annually. The company’s CEO, Mary Barra, said as the motor industry continued to change, GM was transforming its business. “We are committed to deploying capital to higher return initiatives that will enable us to lead in our core business and in the future of personal mobility.

and other key stakeholders have given us over the many years that we have operated in this country. We will manage the changeover as smoothly as possible.” However, Irvin Jim, general secretary of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), said GM’s decision would result in the retrenchment of at least 600 workers. He called for a campaign to boycott GM products because of the job losses. “GM has not disclosed the full terms of the agreement it signed with Isuzu. NUMSA has submitted to GMSA a list of questions so that we can get accurate information in order to advance alternatives from an informed position,” he said in a statement.

“Globally, we are now in the right markets to drive profitability, strengthen our business performance and capitalise on growth opportunities for the long term. We will continue to optimise our operations market by market to further improve our competitiveness and cost base,” she said. According to a statement issued by GM, the decisions followed an extensive review of operations in the company’s international markets and reflected a series of actions taken to improve global business performance that began in late 2013. “These actions will further allow us to focus our resources on winning in the markets where we have strong franchises and see greater opportunity,” said Ammann. “We have compelling plans for growth in both the top line and the bottom line as we invest for the future.” According to reports, GM sold just 49 000 vehicles in India and South Africa combined last year.

NEWS >> The Haval H2… giving its name to GWM SA

GWM undergoes a name change The South African subsidiary of Great Wall Motors (GWM) has undergone a name change. Now fully controlled by its Chinese parent, the local company has been reregistered as Haval Motors South Africa (Pty) Ltd. Since establishing itself in the country a decade ago, the brand has sold more than 55 000 units through a dealership network that now numbers more than 40. According to a statement, a slew of continually updated GWM products – including popular H5 and H6 SUV derivatives as well as Steed bakkies – will join the company’s latest introductions to the local market, premium-class Haval models. Heading the new vehicles is the Haval H2, a sub-compact SUV that is said to offer slick styling, excellent driving dynamics and high safety levels. It is joined by the Haval H1, a similarly styled – but smaller – crossover. Both models are said to be popular in their domestic markets, where Haval’s sales last year accounted for over a million units – making it the best-selling SUV nameplate in China. The H2 is powered by a 1,5-litre turbocharged petrol

engine which produces 105kW and 202Nm. Drive is to the front wheels via a choice of manual or automatic sixspeed gearboxes. Equipment levels include imitation leather upholstery and a high-resolution infotainment system with a touchscreen. The H1 utilises a similarly sized, naturally aspirated VVT engine which produces 78kW and 138Nm. Initially called the M4, it was facelifted and rebranded earlier this year as the Haval brand looked to boost its sales internationally. According to Charles Zhao, managing director of Haval Motors SA, South Africa’s market plays an important part in Haval’s and GWM’s international expansion strategy. “Going forward we will continue to distribute Haval and GWM vehicles locally, offer parts and service support as well as administer warranties through the already established dealer network,” he says. Like their GWM counterparts, Haval derivatives will be sold with a five-year/100 000km warranty and will carry five years’ worth of free road assistance.

Messe Frankfurt plans Hypermotion expo Messe Frankfurt, organisers of Automechanika events around the world, has engaged global transport consultancy Frost & Sullivan to help it devise a new mobility trade fair – Hypermotion. The agreement was signed last month. The consultants have been brought in to address topics pertinent to all forms of transportation, the idea of Hypermotion being to provide a platform to highlight requirements and opportunities for the 21st Century mobility industry. In a statement, a Frost & Sullivan spokesman says the company will offer industry knowledge as well as conceptual approaches to ensure the programme reflects the needs of new mobility challenges. “With Hypermotion, Messe Frankfurt will be able to unite key stakeholders such as traditional OEMs, start-ups, transportation providers, technology developers and governmental players to facilitate productive exchange and the exploration of potential collaborations,” the statement says.

According to Arunprasad Nandakumar, team leader for Frost & Sullivan’s Autonomous Driving Division: “With the fair and conference evolving around digitalisation, decarbonisation and disruption, we feel right in our element and are glad to contribute to what we believe will emerge as a major industry event, setting cutting edge standards and bringing people together to shape the future of mobility.” Michael Johannes, vice-president of Mobility & Logistics at Messe Frankfurt, said: “Convergence between industries – for example bringing healthcare and wellbeing into the connected car – is a major driver behind our collaboration. Frost & Sullivan is excellently positioned to add value to our overall concept.”

Daimler turns to 3D

AA welcomes 24/7 law enforcement

Daimler Buses is exploiting the benefits of 3D printing to produce replacement parts for its Mercedes-Benz and Setra brands.

Plans to declare traffic law enforcement an essential service, and thereby enable a 24-hour working schedule for traffic officers, was a positive development which should be welcomed by all motorists in South Africa.

“In the medium term, we see digital production technologies as offering vast potential to enable us to address market and customer requirements in a flexible manner while at the same time minimising investment risks,” says Hartmut Schick, Head of Daimler Buses. 3D printing provides the bus division with a means of responding swiftly, flexibly, economically and ecologically to individual customer requests and requirements for replacement parts, while avoiding the costs relating to tool production, component storage and the disposal of surplus materials. About 780 components have been printed for customer vehicles to date. In addition, more than 150 different replacement parts for buses are currently being scrutinised and validated with regard to their feasibility as 3D printed parts.

That’s the view of the Automobile Association (AA) which was commenting on a statement put to Parliament last month by the Minister of Transport, Joe Maswanganyi, during his budget vote. Maswanganyi outlined a two-fold approach to ensure the availability of traffic officers on a 24/7 basis, suggesting that the number of law enforcers on public roads should be increased and that traffic law enforcement should be declared an essential service. “This is a hugely positive step, and is encouraging in light of the country’s high road fatality statistics. According to the Road

Traffic Management Corporation’s (RTMC), about 55% of crashes occur between 6pm and 6am, when, traditionally, there has been limited coverage by traffic officials. “Having traffic officers on duty during this time may lead to positive results, and we welcome the move as a first step to dealing with the carnage on our roads,” the AA noted. Apart from more traffic officers and extended working hours, the AA said it was important for the DoT to educate drivers on the need for compliance regarding traffic laws, since without public understanding, disregarding for laws would continue. The Association also welcomed the Minister’s remarks that his department would focus on maintaining provincial and national road networks, and improving public transport for rail and road commuters.

Learning the ropes… Ghana’s first intake of heavy-duty mechatronic students

Vocational training from Scania Scania has helped to establish Ghana’s first vocational training programme for heavy vehicle service technicians. established Accra Bus Rapid Transit system. The buses must be serviced and repaired by professional personnel with specialist skills, which have been difficult to find on the Ghanaian labour market.

According to a statement issued by Scania, Ghana’s Government Technical Training Centre annually enrolls about 120 students for three-year vocational training as service technicians for passenger cars and minibuses. However, there has never been any training programme in the country for heavy vehicles.

“Nowadays, you need both good theoretical and practical training, as well as computer and language skills. The service technician is now a highly qualified person that you entrust with your valuable asset.”

Within the three-year training curriculum for service technicians, approximately 25 students a year will have the opportunity to specialise in mechatronics for heavy vehicles. Training will include systematic trouble-shooting using digital diagnostics systems. Scania has delivered 245 buses for the newly

“The demands on service technicians at present are very different from those in the past,” says Fredrik Morsing, Managing Director of Scania West Africa.

The new Heavy Duty Mechatronic vocational training programme will be part of the Government Technical Training Centre but will be carried out in a 500-square metre building within Scania’s premises. The company has provided the major part of industry funding for this aspect of the project, in addition to making available vehicles also contributing to the development of training content.

Sava launches Trenta Sava, a leading brand within Goodyear’s product portfolio, has launched the Trenta 2 to bolster its LDV tyre range. The tyre is said to offer improved mileage and fuel efficiency, promoting lower costs and increased reliability over a longer lifespan. The design incorporates a multi-radius tyre contour, which generates a long and wide footprint with even pressure distribution between the tyre and road, resulting in high mileage capabilities. Moreover, the solid outside blocks are straight and robust, with strong, reinforced edges, delivering better force-transfer capabilities when compared with the predecessor, translating into confident handling and braking capabilities even when vehicles are heavily loaded. In addition, circumferential grooves have been positioned optimally to disperse water out of the tread quickly, resulting in excellent contact on wet roads.

Fuso has expanded its range of workhorses by introducing the FJ 26-280C, a locally-assembled, heavy-duty truck aimed primarily at the construction sector

C

apable, efficient, tough on the outside but comfortable on the inside – that’s the verdict regarding Daimler’s recently launched Mitsubishi Fuso FJ 26-280C.

Knocked Down (CKD) kits imported from Japan, with some local content added. The plant – which also assembles the FA series – was recently upgraded at a cost of more than R3-million.

The model, powered by a turbocharged, direct injection diesel engine that produces 205kW and 1 100Nm, has been designed for rugged applications. Its nine-speed transmission includes a crawler gear that provides the flexibility necessary to negotiate off-road terrain, while a Power TakeOff (PTO) System – which can be used to power supplementary equipment – is a standard feature.

According to Fuso spokesmen, to promote durability the chassis of the FJ26-280C incorporates thick and deep long members, while shot-peened and powder coated cross members add strength and reduce the possibility of corrosion.

The model is built at Mercedes-Benz South Africa’s East London assembly plant from Completely

14 Future Trucking & Logistics / May 2017

Rear suspension is of the robust, multi-leaf, bogie type, while front and rear anti-roll bars are said to increase the vehicle’s on-road stability. A differential lock which aids traction in conditions that offer limited grip is a standard feature.

“By producing the Fuso FA and FJ series trucks in our East London plant, we are simply putting into action what we promised would be the next logical step after we launched the Regional Centre Southern Africa last year. “We are building Fuso trucks in southern Africa, by southern Africans, for southern Africa – irrefutable proof that further reiterates our commitment to the southern African market, as part of our over-arching brand growth plan.” The interior has been designed to promote comfort and reduce driver fatigue. Among its features are a three-way adjustable seat and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. The extended day cab includes a fold-down bunk. Occupants also benefit from airconditioning and rear windows that can be opened for ventilation. Jasper Hafkamp, Executive Director of Daimler Trucks South Africa, said the construction industry was one of the country’s key indicators for economic growth. “What better way to underline our support for the sector than by launching what will soon be an icon in the industry, the Fuso FJ 26-280C?” he said at the vehicle’s unveiling, held at the company’s factory in East London.

Gladstone Mtyoko, Divisional Manager for the plant’s commercial vehicles operation, said the facility continued to build on its proud manufacturing heritage, having been in existence for almost 70 years. “Over that time we have built reliable vehicles and constantly set and maintained high standards in safety, quality and future-proof technologies. It is exciting to expand our product portfolio to include FA- and FJ-series models. We intend to maintain our status of being a pioneer and a benchmark commercial vehicles manufacturer,” she said. • The recommended retail price for the Fuso FJ 26-280C chassis cab is R925 000.

M

AN Truck & Bus chose last month’s SABOA Conference and Expo to showcase its next generation Lion’s Explorer bus with bodywork produced at the company’s assembly plant in Olifantsfontein. According to a company statement, the MAN brand has dominated the passenger transportation sector in southern Africa for more than a decade, leading the market for commuter buses with a gross vehicle mass of 8,5 tons or more. At the launch, Philip Kalil-Zackey, Head of MAN’s Bus & Coach sales, said the new vehicle had been fully integrated into the family of Lion’s buses available to customers around the globe. “We are very proud as Team South Africa to have built a bus locally which clearly has evolved in its aesthetic appearance, and no doubt will become a welcome addition to the hundreds of vehicles we have deployed so successfully over the last decade or so. “Team MAN has taken two decades of passenger transport expertise, combined with the ongoing inputs from our very experienced customers, and integrated all that know-how into the global developments of the MAN Lion’s family of buses. The result is a completely new bus body, with modern European styling, that includes the DNA requirements to meet arduous African operating conditions.” At the front the bus features fuel consumption reducing aerodynamics and LED day-time running

lights, while the rear incorporates a new design that includes dazzling taillight clusters. Markus Geyer, MAN’s managing director, said that while some of the world’s best passenger transport engineers and passenger transport executives had been involved in the project, the company was equally grateful for the input from its customers. “They know this market intimately, and understand what makes for safe, durable and reliable technology. We have proudly incorporated their suggestions into our new design, while aligning to the exacting engineering standards demanded from the MAN group perspective.” Geyer added that MAN was proud to have expanded its local production capabilities. “The new generation of Lion’s Explorer bus bodies will have pride of place in our communities and will contribute to safe commuting like never before,” he maintained. “The vehicle includes all previous USPs as well as having the blessing of our product engineers who are driving technological developments at an international level.” According to Kalil-Zackey, the new bus provided an example of MAN’s ongoing commitment to South Africa and the world-class passenger transport companies situated here. “The bus is a result of teamwork between stake-holders, enabling solutions which add value to our economy,” he said.

Paving the way to automation The Volvo Group is pioneering a number of autonomous vehicle projects – the latest of which involves a self-drive refuse removal truck

I

n one of its latest research and development projects involving self-driving vehicles, the Volvo Group, together with Swedish waste and recycling specialists Renova, is testing a pioneering autonomous refuse removal truck that has the potential to be used across the urban environment. The project explores how automation can contribute to enhanced traffic safety, improved working conditions and lower environmental impact. “There is amazing potential to transform the swift pace of technical developments in automation into practical benefits for customers and, more broadly, society in general,” says Lars Stenqvist, the Volvo Group’s chief technology officer. According to Stenqvist, the latest project leads the way globally in terms of self-drive standards, and is only one of several autonomous innovations on which the company is working, The autonomous refuse removal truck is designed to make driving safe in built-up areas, not least when reversing. Sensors continuously monitor the vehicle’s position and the truck stops immediately if an obstacle suddenly appears in its path. With its route pre-programmed, the vehicle drives itself from one wheelie-bin to the next. “One important benefit of the new technology is a reduction in the risk of occupational injuries suffered by refuse collectors – wear in knee joints, for instance,” says Stenqvist. The autonomous truck also offers major environmental upsides. Gear changing, steering and speed are constantly optimised for low fuel consumption and low CO2 emissions.

18 Future Trucking & Logistics / May 2017

The joint project with Renova will extend until end of the year, when an assessment will be made on the feasibility of introducing the project on a permanent basis. The autonomous truck under test is fitted with extensive sensor systems that help it to navigate, identify obstacles and monitor its exact position on the road, much of the technology similar to that used in a self-drive truck Volvo has developed for mining operations. Revealed in September last year, the vehicle became the first autonomous truck to be tested in the Kristineberg Mine in northern Sweden, where it operates underground as part of a development project aimed at improving the transport flow and safety in the mine. The truck’s route covers a distance of seven kilometres through narrow tunnels that reach a depth of 1 320 metres. Using various sensors, it continuously monitors its surroundings and avoids both fixed and moving objects. At the same time, an on-board transport system gathers data to optimise and coordinate its route and fuel consumption. The truck is part of a development project and, like the refuse removal vehicle, is being tested in real-life operations for the first time. Another of Volvo’s self-driving truck projects, AutoFreight, was recently launched in Gothenburg – where the company is headquartered – with a view to determining whether autonomously driven vehicles could improve efficiencies related to the freight and logistics industries. The project, which includes 10 partners, aims at establishing prerequisites for improvements relating

to freight movements. “Every day, a large number of trucks transport containers between the Gothenburg harbour and the city of Borås,” says a statement issued by the Volvo Group. “Improved transport efficiency using self-driving trucks would not only benefit the companies using this form of transport but also the society at large, due to a lower environmental impact and increased safety. “This is the background of the newly started research project called AutoFreight, where the 10 partners together will try to find solutions needed for improved transport efficiency.” According to project manager Emma Wermström, the strength of the initiative lies in the broad spectrum of partners involved. “Efficient trucks alone are not enough to make a large societal impact,” she says. The Volvo Group’s contribution is to perform research within automated, articulated heavy duty trucks with a view to defining the prerequisites for self-driving vehicles on the highway. “The vision is to pave the way for automated driving on the road between the harbour and Borås,” Wermström says. “However, during the initial phase the driver will always be in command. The self-driving functionality will, for safety reasons, be validated only at a test track,” she says. Wermström says another partner, Chalmers University of Technology, will manage the validation process and also develop the algorithms needed for autonomous, articulated vehicles. To help implement the task, transport company GDL – which uses a Volvo to haul containers daily from the

Ground-breaking rail link Volvo Cars has become the first automaker in the world to export China-built cars to Europe by train via a new One Belt, One Road trade initiative. The first S90 premium sedans, built at Volvo’s Daqing plant in China, arrived last month at a distribution centre in Zeebrugge, Belgium. The cars had been transported via the recently opened China-Europe railway link. The connection brings down the time it takes to transport vehicles to Europe by two thirds compared with the naval route, meaning customers receive their cars faster after placing their orders. The train route ties Volvo’s global manufacturing and logistics strategy to the multi-billion euro trade flows between China and Europe and the so-called One Belt, One Road initiative that seeks to resurrect the age-old Silk Road trade route for a new era of global trade. The railway link also illustrates how China is turning into a global manufacturing and export hub for high-end consumer products. Volvo was the first Western car maker to export a premium China-made car to the US in 2015 with the S60 Inscription. In November last year, the company started building high-end versions of its S90 premium sedan in Daqing for global exports, and will soon be building all S90 vehicles in the factory for global export. Beyond shorter waiting times for customers, rail is also a smarter choice in terms of the environmental impact of logistics operations. Carbon emissions per ton/km are reduced by a third by choosing rail over sea transport. Each of the Volvo-dedicated trains traveling between Daqing and Zeebrugge carry around 225 Volvo cars, which are transported in specially designed containers. One container holds three cars at different angles in order to maximize the use of space available. Special fixtures ensure that the cars are fastened during transport and do not move. Initially, trains will depart from Daqing once a week. The plan is to increase this frequency in line with growing volumes. South Africa is due to start receiving Chinabuilt S90 models in the latter half of 2017, with these vehicles coming directly from China by ship.

Levels of Automation According to the Volvo Group, various solutions will be required depending on the degree of vehicle automation that is sought and the complexity of the situation where the transport solution is to operate. Driver only: The driver is fully engaged at all times. Assisted: Automation of individual functions; the driver is fully engaged but may be feet off, for instance, when using cruise control. Partial automation: Automation of multiple functions; the driver remains fully engaged but may be feet off and hands off, though eyes must stay on the road. Conditional automation: Automation of multiple functions; the driver responds to requests to intervene. The driver may be feet off, hands off and eyes off, but must be able to resume control of the vehicle quickly. High automation: Automated in certain conditions; the driver is not expected to monitor the road and assumes no responsibility for the vehicle’s behaviour when automated mode is engaged. Full automation: Situation independent automated driving; the driver has no responsibility for any driving duties.

port to Borås – has agreed to equip the vehicle with sensors that monitor the environment through which it passes, simultaneously monitoring driver behaviour. “The data gleaned will provide the basis for development of the required algorithms for selfdriving functionality,” says Wermström. She adds that the administrators of the container terminal at Borås will investigate the possibility of opening a dry port outside the city to speed up freight clearing operations, while the Swedish Transport Administration will investigate adaptions of the infrastructure that may be needed to allow selfdriving trucks on the highway. The project will run until 2020 with a budget of $5,47-million (about R 71,1-million), with Sweden’s innovation agency Vinnova funding half the budget and the partners in the project the other half.

NAMPO in the spotlight FAW, Hino and Nissan were among South Africa’s vehicle manufacturers who went big at the recent NAMPO agricultural show in Bothaville Farmer’s delight… the FAW display at NAMPO

F

AW trucks are popular choices for members of the agricultural community – and the number of FAW owners in the sector is growing exponentially. That’s the claim made by Jianyu Hao, CEO of FAW Vehicle Manufacturers South Africa, following the brand’s participation last month in the NAMPO Harvest Day Festival at Bothaville in the Free State. Hao said in terms of size, vehicle representation and ability to engage with the public, FAW’s display at the event had been perceived as a frontrunner. He said farmers had indicated that they liked the vehicles because of their strong chassis, good grip and traction afforded by manual transmission, and a cab design that promoted driving comfort. “At NAMPO we recognised the patronage and loyal support of a multitude of agricultural customers who have, over the past 22 years that FAW has been present in South Africa, remained committed to our brand,” he said. Hao added that the number of FAWs sold in the subSaharan region had increased since the opening of the company’s Coega-based plant in 2014. “Many Southern

African customers are buying locally produced vehicles because of the obvious cost benefits and the opportunity to purchase well-engineered trucks, some modified to meet specific regional conditions,” he said. According to Hao, advantages of buying local included shorter lead-times for delivery; the internationally recognised, high quality levels maintained at the South African plant; and the reduced cost of sourcing FAW vehicles locally, rather than importing. Another truck manufacturer which had a high profile at NAMPO was Hino South Africa, the brand afterwards agreeing to distribute to distressed farmers across Southern Africa a load of livestock feed which had been donated for delivery by the local agricultural community. “There is a strong camaraderie among farmers,” said Leslie Long, Hino SA’s senior manager for marketing and product planning. “For instance, last year we provided a truck and inter-link trailer to deliver feed to drought stricken farmers in the Free State. “This year, famers who had enjoyed rain and good crops came to our stand and said they had feed they

were prepared to donate to needy farmers in other areas if we could take care of delivery, which we agreed to,” said Long. He said Hino’s credentials in the agricultural sector had been established in 1972, when Toyota decided to introduce trucks to South Africa. “The brand already had a strong presence among farmers with its range of bakkies. Now we sell about a quarter of our Hino vehicles to the agricultural and related sectors. Our success in this market segment is long-running.” Long said NAMPO – originally organised in 1974 by the National Maize Producers’ Organisation, but now marketed by Grain SA – provided an excellent opportunity for interaction with current and potential customers. He said this year, as usual, several Hino trucks which had been on display had been sold off the stand. According to Long, a new derivative in the 500-Series range – the Hino 1322 with four-wheel drive and the option of single or dual rear wheels – drew much interest, while a selection of 1,5-ton Dynas, which were recently re-rated as a light commercial vehicles, proved popular among potential buyers, a drop-side tipper version being snapped up. Also sold off the stand was a Hino 1626 fitted with cattle rails, while other vehicles on display included a Hino 700-Series 6x4 truck-tractor and the range-topping 3541 8x4 tipper.

Following NAMPO, Hino distributed a load of livestock feed – which had been donated by the agricultural community – to needy farmers

Nissan South Africa, too, reaffirmed its long-term commitment to the agricultural sector by exhibiting its extensive range of pick-ups and accessories at the show. Main attraction was the all-new Navara, including a number of highly accessorised derivatives and a unique exposed model showing the vehicle’s ladder frame and independent rear suspension. “There was widespread interest in the vehicle and especially in its rear suspension,” said product manager Isa Giunta. “Using the exposed model, we were able to demonstrate how the Navara could carry more than a ton in the load bay, while offering significantly better road holding and ride comfort than traditional leaf sprung pick-ups.”

While visitors to the Nissan display could interact with technical specialists, they were also invited to experience the Navara’s off-road prowess at the NAMPO 4x4 track, where two models were available for test drives. Also on display were examples of the NP300 Hardbody – still one of the best-selling pick-ups in South Africa, with a large number sold to farmers and suppliers to the agricultural sector – and NP200 derivatives, and an extensive range of agriculturalspecific accessories such as cattle rails, raised, heavyduty suspension systems and replacement bumpers with additional underbody protection. “We’re confident that as the Navara range expands, it will also become a top selling model in this market, both as a workhorse and a leisure vehicle,” said Xavier Gobille, managing director for sales, marketing and aftersales at the Nissan Group.

Junk status and business Having the right insurance cover has never been more important, since the recent downgrade of South Africa’s bonds to junk status signals tough times ahead, says Morné Stoltz, Head of Business Insurance at MiWay

T

he recent downgrade of South Africa’s debt to junk status is likely to usher in tough economic times, says the President of the AHI, Bernard Swanepoel. He argues that downward pressure on the rand and more expensive debt will mean less money for infrastructure projects, which will in turn reduce government procurement from SMEs. In addition, less spending on service delivery could mean SMEs will have to look at making contingency plans for power and water interruptions, among other things. In general, depressed economic activity will put pressure on all business, SMEs included. With shallower pockets than corporates, SMEs will inevitably look for ways to cut overheads. For many, insurance is already seen as a grudge purchase and so it is often a seemingly obvious target for cost-cutting. This would be a mistake. Risk is always present, and the wise businessperson takes proactive steps to ensure that he or she understands the risks the business faces, and mitigates them. Insurance remains the best and cheapest way for a small company to mitigate risk and ensure that the materialisation of one of those risks does not result in business failure. With fewer resources behind it, one could argue that a SME is more dependent on insurance than a large corporation. For example, a customer injury at its business premises, or a defective product that causes injury, could each result in substantial claims for damage. The purchase of new equipment for example, could make a business a desirable target for thieves. These are all likely scenarios.

30 Future Trucking & Logistics / May 2017

One needs to add that the likelihood of many risks materialising – such as theft – actually increases when times are hard. Having the right sort of insurance cover in place would obviously mean the difference between survival and bankruptcy for many a SME when disasters such as these strike. Furthermore, the right insurance partner can play a much more strategic role than simply providing insurance cover. A reputable insurer recognises that it has a vested interest in helping its clients’ businesses to succeed. For example, MiWay has business insurance advisors who will consult at a client’s premises to help assess what risks they face and thus what their insurance needs are. This kind of professional risk management is invaluable, particularly when it comes to complex, poorly understood risks, such as supply chain risk. Every business is part of a supply chain, something that creates a complex risk landscape. SMEs may find it hard to come to grips with the impact of a supplier’s inability to supply a product or service on time – or indeed a disaster – making it impossible for the SME itself to honour its contractual obligations. In addition, MiWay also offers a value-added service, MiBusiness Assist that offers other types of assistance – HR, tax, BEE accreditation, legal assistance and so on. Some other insurers will have similar value-adds. There’s no doubt that trading conditions will be tough for the foreseeable future. SME owners are resourceful and tough – they have to be. Using insurance wisely to understand and mitigate risk will make their chances of surviving and prospering much greater, while the lack of insurance could give fate the upper hand. ANALYSIS >>

Finding the competitive edge A low rate of growth in the local economy had created headwinds for transporters – but specialised operational segments were showing increasing signs of activity, according to an analysis by body builder, Serco

C

linton Holcroft, managing director of truck and trailer body building company Serco, says staying in touch with global trends and innovations is an important factor in providing local customers with a competitive edge. As part of its strategy, Serco regularly visits international trade shows such as the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Germany – regarded as the one of the world’s leading trade fairs for transportation and innovation. Clinton Holcroft… “technology is accelerating at an exponential rate”

According to Holcroft, last year’s show – which was themed Driven by Ideas – focused on forward thinking topics such as connectivity, automated driving, alternative power trains and digitisation. Holcroft said he had been impressed by mobile apps used to interface with trailers using telematics to enable views of axle loads, brake performance or maintenance requirements, as well as the increasing use of cameras to monitor driver behaviour. Where possible, he said Serco would introduce these kinds of innovative systems to the vehicles it built. According to Holcroft, a high profile new initiative for Serco was a supply partnership the company had entered into with Netherlands-based Loadlok, whose products include a wide range of load securing accessories and multi-temp dividers. He said Serco’s focus this year would be on extracting improvements in efficiencies in the wake of the company expanding its trailer facility in Durban to accommodate machinery for injection panel manufacturing – a first for locally manufactured refrigerated trailers in South Africa. “Serco has also been able to use its design

32 Future Trucking & Logistics / May 2017

innovation to manufacture a number of demountable truck bodies which have already helped a leading transporter to streamline its operations. Transporters are looking to maximise use of their fleets and we have been able to provide practical solutions,” he said. On the subject of extending the life of used trailers, Holcroft said Serco had introduced rebuilding and refurbishment programmes which made full use of its national manufacturing and repair facilities. Asked about company performance and challenges, Holcroft said 2016 had been an eventful year, with the highlight being the introduction of the injected polyurethane (PUR) foam panel manufacturing technology.

“With this new technology, we have achieved noticeable improvements in thermal performance and panel strength, which reflect our ongoing quest for innovation and our commitment to industryleading standards of product quality. “The new Serco Frost Liner trailer is a proudly South African-made product manufactured according to international standards. It is a robust trailer capable of coping with demanding operating conditions. “Specially coated steel skin is applied to the inner and outer facings of the insulated panels. The outer skin has a durable smooth finish and UV protection, while the interior skin incorporates a food-safe PVC coating.” Holcroft said Serco had achieved impressive year-on-year growth in 2016 despite tough trading conditions. “The local economy continues to experience low growth which is creating a headwind for transporters,” said Holcroft. “There are, however, pockets of positive growth in specialised segments. “What is clear is that technology is accelerating at an exponential rate and the logistics of the future will be carried out in a highly digital and environmentally conscious way.”

MICHELIN X MULTI RANGE

“NEVER STOP DRIVING YOUR BUSINESS FURTHER” MICHELIN Tyre Company South Africa has refined its current 315/70 tyre range by replacing the X MULTIWAY range with the new X MULTI tyre range. The X MULTI range has been designed to assist fleet operators to reduce their operating costs and improve their business efficiency. The tread pattern with the addition of carbion on the X MULTI range significantly boosts mileage performance, and is more resistant to abrasions. The X MULTI range reduces fuel consumption and lowers cost per kilometre. “The MICHELIN X MULTI range has added safety features which provide added safety for the driver, the load and other road users. It has enhanced the braking distance, the grip, traction and handling over the entire lifespan of the tyre. The resistance to shoulder damage has also been improved” says Yoliswa Nkomo, Operations Marketing Manager B2B. Environmental factors were considered when developing the MICHELIN X MULTI tyre range, the tyres are re-groovable and have up to 88% retread acceptance rate, this extends the life of the tyre and saves raw material utilised to produce new tyres. “MICHELIN Tyre Company South Africa believes that this tyre will be a more robust tyre to suite the current road conditions and the temperature range in South Africa” explains Yoliswa Nkomo.
