The Mercedes-Benz Actros Setting the new heavy duty benchmark
NEW MODELS
This issue of Future Trucking & Logistics is jam-packed with all the latest news as well as a host of new model launches. The new Mercedes-Benz Actros was finally launched in South Africa and is set to shake up the heavy duty transport industry, thanks to an array of very innovative technology that makes lives of drivers easier and safer while cutting costs for the operator, and in this day and age everyone is looking to save money. In the van segment, Volkswagen has launched its new Crafter, and this is the first time that this model is 100 per cent their own design, so it will be interesting to see how the market receives it. Hyundai has updated its H1 bus and panel van, and the old girl is good for another couple of years.

Hino rewards SA dealer staff with educational visit to Japan Ignatius Muthien, Senior Manager – Special Projects at the Toyota Training Academy, explained that Toyota had instituted its skills contest 30 years ago, and that the Hino programme has been running for 25 years, and the contest has grown in complexity over this period. There are now 10 categories in the contest, with Hino dealer staff involved in four of them: Parts Sales, Parts Stores, Vehicle Sales and Technical Service. The initial entry amounts to more than 5 000 people.
H
ino Motors Limited, of Japan, rewarded four dealer staff members from South Africa for their excellence in the annual Hino Skills Contest by taking them on a six-day educational tour of Japan recently. This was the fourth year that Hino Japan has honoured these skills contest winners in this manner. The four people from South African Hino dealerships were: Vincent Nicol (Hino Parow, Cape Town) for parts sales; Annalise Scholtz (Hino Diaz Road, Port Elizabeth) for parts stores; Gonasagaren Naicker (Hino Mobeni, Durban) for vehicle sales; and Johannes Calitz (Hino Oranje, Bloemfontein) for technical service. Pieter Badenhorst, Senior Manager at Toyota SA’s Sandton Training Academy, accompanied them on the once-in-a-lifetime trip. The four South African category winners were part of a group of 47 people from all 13 countries that had staged similar skills contests to encourage service excellence in the global Hino dealer network. The week-long visit included visits to the Hamura manufacturing plant as well as to the Hino Tokyo dealership. The awards were made to all the winners at a gala function in Tokyo. In addition, there were a number of cultural tours to places of interest in Japan and the visit proved an ideal opportunity for opinion sharing by the South Africans with dealer staff from a wide range of other countries.

The participants are thinned out with a series of online questionnaires, followed by regional and then national practical tests. The finals are now contested by the best-of-the-best people in each category, and no longer according to positions in the regional finals. “We are very proud of the way the Hino Skills Contest has been developed over the years, as it plays a significant role in our overall Hino Total Support strategy which aims to strengthen the bonds between Hino Japan, Hino South Africa, and our suppliers and dealers, for the ultimate benefit of our customers,” summed up Ernie Trautmann, the Vice-President of Hino SA.
Hilux gets new face and Dakar treatment
T
he Toyota Hiluxs exploits have achieved something of a cult status, establishing and enviable reputation for the Japanese pick-up on a global scale. The resounding characteristic remains its inherent strength, durability and capability. One arena where the Hilux has achieved unparalleled success is the fabled Dakar off-road race. The South African-built Hilux off-road race vehicles have amassed four podiums at this event, and in celebration of this achievement, Toyota is introducing a limited edition model named Hilux Dakar. The Dakar suffix is reserved for the pinnacle of Hilux variants, and therefore the model presents a unique product offering befitting the revered label. The Dakar limited edition sports an all-new face, featuring a more prominent trapezoidal grille and ‘squared-off’design. The central focal point is the large gloss-black-honeycomb grille, which incorporates two horizontal sections. The inner grille area is bordered by a metallic grey surround, which blends into the LED headlamps. A matching glossblack accent strip on the bonnet and stylised Dakar insignia attached to the grille, complete the design. The lower bumper also features a large honeycomb mesh pattern, extending to the sides of the vehicle, creating a sense of width. The fog lamps utilise LED elements for superb illumination, and a metallic grey skid plate provides the finishing touches to the front facia. The exterior sports a number of distinctive touches such as gloss black treatment for the door handles and side mirrors. The rear bumper is finished in grey to match the design upfront. The interior features all-black treatment, including a black headliner, metallic trim accent panels (silver
on Raider) and black leather upholstery with light grey contrast stitching (fabric on Raider), creating a sporty, premium space for occupants. The infotainment system is upgraded to include Satellite Navigation, while the standard Bluetooth, USB and CD/DVD playback functionality is retained. The touch-screen system also includes an on-board trip computer and customizable home screen. Dakar models receive a unique instrument cluster, using white-faced gauges with orange needle pointers and bespoke graphics All Dakar models are based on Raider models and, therefore, employ either the proven 2.8 GD-6 powertrain or 4.0-litre (double-cab only). The 2.8-litre, four cylinder turbo-diesel engine produces 130kW and 420Nm in manual guise. Automatic transmission-equipped variants receive a boost to 450Nm. The V6 variant delivers a throaty 175kW and 376Nm Both rear-wheel and switch-on-the-fly four-wheel drive transaxles are offered, each available in either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission configuration. The Dakar limited edition is restricted to four exterior colours – including Glacier White, Chromium Silver, Graphite Grey, and an all-new Inferno Orange Metallic. Buyers can choose between either Xtra or Double Cab configurations with 1000 units of the Xtra-Cab and 5000 units of the Double Cab available. Pricing is approximately R17 000 more than a regular Hilux Raider.

Mahindra opens SA assembly plant He said the plant had been designed to produce 2 500 units annually, with provision made to expand production to 4 000 units. “The assembly of the Pik Up is a very important step, but it remains only the first step in our long-term plan that will see us increase employment, local sourcing and content, as well as the complexity of our assembly facility in KwaZulu-Natal,” he said.
Avinash Bapat, CFO of Mahindra South Africa; Arvind Matthew, Chief of International Operations for Mahindra & Mahindra; Dempsey Naidoo, chairman of AIH Logistics; Sihle Zikalala, MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs; Ruchira Kamboj, High Commissioner for India to South Africa; Dr Shashank Vikram, India’s Consul General in Durban; Dr Bridgette Gasa, Chairperson of the Dube TradePort Corporation and Ambassador Sadick Govender
M
ahindra South Africa has opened a R10-million vehicle assembly plant in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
The facility, located at the Dube Trade Port Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at King Shaka Airport, assembles single- and double-cab Mahindra Pik Ups. The plant was constructed in partnership with AIH Logistics. At the opening ceremony, Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa, said the brand had grown significantly since the launch of its first models here in 2004. “In the last five years, market share has increased by a compound annual growth rate of over 4,6%, much of which has been achieved in a declining market.”
Avinash Bapat, the company’s CFO, said future expansion could see the addition of another pickup or commercial vehicle to the line – or even one of Mahindra’s tractor models or heavy-duty power generator systems. The facility began trial production in May and enters full production in June. According to Dempsey Naidoo, Chairman of AIH Logistics, the initiative represents a significant investment in skills and training in the automotive sector. “Mahindra, in partnership with AIH, is committed to empowering local businesses to grow together. This facility is a start in achieving that objective,” he said. Mahindra and Mahindra’s Chief of International Operations, Arvind Mathew, said the company had always regarded South Africa as a base from which it could grow its market share on the continent. “We believe that our investment in an ultra-modern assembly facility, and our intention to localise partsourcing over time reaffirms this view,” he said.
Continental and Toyota Material Handling join forces
C
ontinental and Toyota Material Handling join forces: All Traigo80 forklift trucks ordered since 1 April 2018, come fitted with the Continental solid tyre SC20+ as standard. “The decision to change the tyre came in response to feedback from the market requesting more resilient and high durable tyres for the electric counterbalance range,” says Giorgio Polonio, General Manager Toyota Material Handling Manufacturing Italy. “This applies in particular to the Traigo80 range, as it is meant for more intensive applications indoors as well as outdoors.”
6
Future Trucking & Logistics / June-July 2018
The service and maintenance costs, as well as the energy consumption of forklift trucks equipped with SC20+ are lower. “The SC20+ merges the best of two worlds: Not only does it offer durability and mileage, it also saves valuable energy even on abrasive grounds,” says Julian Alexander, Product Line Manager Material Handling at Continental. Released in January, the tyre comes with a new compound that combines high mileage with low rolling resistance. It is hard-wearing and puncture resistant, and particularly shines in highly intensive applications indoors as well as outdoors on uneven surfaces such as paving slabs or cobble stone pavement.
DAF named International Truck of the Year 2018 B
abcock’s commitment to delivering to the highest standards was again highlighted recently when, amid stiff competition, DAF Trucks was awarded the prestigious International Truck of the Year 2018 accolade for its new XF and CF series. Named as making the greatest contribution to road transport efficiency, the DAF XF and CF trucks set new standards of driveline effectiveness and overall performance. Babcock is the sole distributor of DAF Trucks in southern Africa and has successfully grown the brand in the country over the past eight years. The annual International Truck of the Year award is presented to an individual vehicle or model range introduced into the market in the previous 12 months, with the winner chosen by an independent jury of leading road-transport journalists from 23 European countries. The award is considered the most prestigious honour in the European truck industry and is judged on several criteria including technological innovation, driver comfort, road safety, drivability, fuel economy, environmental ‘footprint’ and total cost of ownership. Innovations in DAF Trucks’ new XF and CF series such as completely new powertrains with highly efficient transmissions and rear axles, compact aftertreatment systems, and sophisticated software and aerodynamic optimisations resulted in reduced CO2 emissions and a fuel consumption improvement of an outstanding 7%, impelling the jury to declare the new DAF XF and CF trucks as leading the way in transport efficiency. The new XF and CF innovative drivelines deliver improved drivability, greater fuel efficiency and seamless gear changing characteristics. Energyefficiency features include improved combustion, reduction of internal engine friction losses, engine down-speeding, intelligent auxiliaries, driveline component integration, different gear shifting
strategies, enhanced predictive features and weight reduction in selected components. Maikel Neijenhuis, DAF Area Manager for Africa and the Middle East, says that efficiency in performance has always been a central pillar of DAF’s philosophy. “Transport efficiency has been in DAF’s DNA since the company began building trucks in 1949, and historically we have always been leaders in fuel economy,” says Neijenhuis. “DAF develops trucks suited for any application, and this is one of the company’s particular strengths,” adds Neijenhuis. He explains that although DAF Trucks are distributed throughout 48 countries all over the world in addition to its European sales locations, each market has its own considerations, with trucks specifically designed to suit each country’s conditions. Further to this is DAF’s international focus on aftersales and dealer networks that strongly aligns with Babcock’s commitment to building lasting relationships with its customers based on trust. Mark Gavin, Sales Director for Babcock’s Transport Solutions, says that since Babcock became the exclusive supplier and distributor of DAF Trucks in southern Africa eight years ago, the brand has become a force to be reckoned with, particularly with regard to fuel efficiency. “The International Truck of the Year award seeks out the best of the best, and includes many European brands extremely popular in South Africa,” says Gavin. “DAF’s achievement among such a prestigious group clearly demonstrates that DAF Trucks really is a brand and product not to be taken lightly. We are extremely proud to represent the International Truck of the Year 2018 and look forward to more everimproving results with DAF products in South Africa.”

Ramaphosa visits Volvo truck plant
P
resident Cyril Ramaphosa – together with the Minister of Economic Development, Ebrahim Patel; Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Bulelani Magwanishe; and Minister of Higher Education, Naledi Pandor – recently visited the Volvo Group Southern Africa’s truck assembly plant at Prospecton near Durban. In his address at the factory, Ramaphosa thanked Volvo for its continuing investment in the South African economy and its commitment to efforts aimed at empowering and developing the country’s youth. “Volvo is a company which believes in investing in society and we applaud its efforts in making youth development an integral part of its social investment programme,” he said. In his replying address, Torbjörn Christensson, President of Volvo Group Southern Africa, said the company employed about 1 000 people locally, representing Volvo Trucks, Volvo Bus, Volvo Financial Services, Volvo Penta and UD Trucks. “We are committed to influencing growth towards a sustainable society. We aim to create societal value by engaging with communities in areas where we live and operate,” he said. According to Christensson, since 2015 the company had invested more than R86-million in apprenticeship training, automotive industry learnerships, disabled person learnerships, as well as internships. He said this year the Volvo group would establish a specialised Driver Training Academy to address South Africa’s shortage of skilled truck drivers. The initiative would form part of a R25-million social investment programme that would also see R7,8-million spent over three years in support of Star for Life, a non-profit organisation that aimed to provide young people with essential life skills, sport training and health education.
8
Future Trucking & Logistics / June-July 2018
“Star for Life is an exemplary project that creates new opportunities for young people to complete their education. In the process, opportunities arise for some of those who qualify to be employed by Volvo,” he said. In his tour of the assembly facility, Ramaphosa took time to engage with workers on the factory floor. Donning a reflective vest similar to those worn by employees, he said in his address that he had felt “much at home” in conversation with the workforce and had been “hugely impressed” at the professionalism and skills sets its members displayed. “It is fantastic to know that, in this facility, a truck is produced every 45 minutes,” he said. “I’ll make sure to tell members of my Cabinet – I wish I could get some of them to speed up their decision-making.” In closing, Ramaphosa called on the Volvo Group to look to increase the amount of local content used in the trucks it manufactured, saying that blackled businesses needed to be “plugged in so that everyone can benefit.” “I believe in partnerships and collaboration,” he said. “South Africa is the gateway to growth on the African continent – I urge you to go and sell that idea to your board,” he told Christensson.

FAW South Africa makes big strides in aftersales customer satisfaction TQC is a worldwide programme that was launched two years ago by FAW in China. It is a framework and umbrella brand that represents all of the initiatives being done in the FAW aftersales environment globally. FAW dealers in South Africa will need to be accredited by FAW SA in order to reach TQC level.
F
AW SA has made a concerted effort to set industry-leading aftersales benchmarks to which its dealers and branches have to adhere. As a result, all FAW dealers are operating at a higher level than ever before. While FAW SA’s efforts have culminated in a comprehensive programme of action to standardise its dealer operations and after-sales departments, including parts, service and warranties nationwide, it believes that customer satisfaction is the ultimate indicator of where it stands. Over the last two years specifically, FAW SA has therefore meticulously developed industry standard criteria, which embody dealer and branch facilities and the proper management thereof. It has also developed a reporting structure in order to measure and better manage the performance of its South African dealers and after-sales departments. FAW SA has also introduced processes to increase dealer stockholding and quicken parts supply. Simultaneously, it is busy introducing FAW TQC (Total Quality Care) in South Africa.
10 Future Trucking & Logistics / June-July 2018
To this end, various training and technical improvement courses, ranging from beginner to advanced in difficulty, have been implemented by FAW SA over the last year. Furthermore, all FAW technicians are required to attend certain service courses to fast-track their technical development. Central to this process is the overall customer experience, part of which includes the training of technicians, which culminated in the FAW National Service Technician Competition. Held in February, the biennial event was won by FAW technician Martin Fick. The competition was aimed at the FAW dealer network, including Botswana and Namibia with the intent to find the best three technicians and workshop managers the company has, before developing them further by sending them overseas. Assessment of the competitors was done during classroom and practical exercises, with technicians scored on their fault finding and fault fixing proficiency. The competition was designed to mirror what happens inside FAW dealerships on a daily basis. The overarching idea is to motivate FAW technicians, while improving their ability to find and fix problems on customer vehicles in a practical manner. The competition further sought to motivate workshop managers to increase the scope and frequency of technical training offered to staff.

Firestone mix business and pleasure at NAMPO Harvest day “Agricultural tyres are a speciality field, and we pride ourselves on having many skilled and knowledgeable specialists on hand to advise farmers on the best tyre choices for the terrain and their specific application.” This year, Firestone used the opportunity to also host its Firestone Karaoke Kombis at its NAMPO stand. Like always, it had two VW Kombis on display, a restored 1972 Brasília Kombi and a brand-new VW Kombi with a selection of English and Afrikaans tunes to choose from, which was made available with support from Volkswagen South Africa. At NAMPO all the participants – singing old, and new karaoke songs - jumped into the new-school bus, while the old-school kombi acted as display vehicle.
F
irestone South Africa upgraded its display at this year’s NAMPO Harvest Day celebrations with a bit of karaoke fun. Firestone is a permanent participant in the NAMPO Harvest Day Festival, where it has a fixed structure to host visiting farmers and share detailed information on its range of agricultural tyres. Thandeka Ngoma, Chief Marketing Officer at Bridgestone South Africa, explains: “As part of the Bridgestone Group, Firestone can rightly claim to be a market leader in agricultural tyres and support to the farming community.
12 Future Trucking & Logistics / June-July 2018
More than 250 visitors to the NAMPO show signed up to sing from the Firestone catalogue of over 30 000 songs. In each case, the aspiring singer or group would choose a song, sign, jump in and sing their hearts out, before receiving a link to their performance on the Internet. “Over the past few months, the two Karaoke Kombis have travelled far and wide to entertain fans and visitors to different music events and festivals. The #FirestoneKK visit to NAMPO has proved to be one of our most successful campaigns to date, thanks in some part to the popularity of the Firestone stand and the number of visitors that came to view our agricultural tyres,” says Ngoma. For more information on the Firestone Karaoke Kombi activation, visit Firestone’s Facebook page at facebook.com/FirestoneZA or see some of the karaoke action at www.firestonejourneys.com.

The new heavy duty benchmark Launched in Europe in 2011 as a Euro 6 model only, extensive technical and product modifications have been made to the European Actros to ensure that the truck meets the reliability and market suitability requirements set out by Mercedes-Benz, for the uniquely South African conditions. Reuben van Niekerk reports
W
ith over 25 000 vehicles sold in South Africa since it was introduced in 1998, the Actros family has long been the most significant success story in the heavy-duty truck sector, with the current Actros being the market leader in this segment. The high standards set by the previous Actros make it an extremely tough act to follow, but the new Actros succeeds in doing this by cutting fuel costs and increasing vehicle availability. A key factor that allows the Actros to achieve this is a drivetrain from a single source with all the engines, transmissions and axles designed and manufactured by Mercedes-Benz in-house ensuring that they are all perfectly matched to each other. Unlike its predecessor, the new Actros will be available exclusively as a truck-tractor, in both air and steel suspension. Rigid distribution, construction,

off-road and specialised application vehicles will be supported by the new Arocs models, which will be launched in South Africa in 2018. The new Actros launches in South Africa with eight new air-suspended models initially. Four 4x2 air-suspended truck-tractors and four 6x4 air-suspended truck-tractors and further steel airsuspended truck-tractors are to be launched during the second part of the year. At launch the Actros is available in two engine variants: 12,8 litre six-cylinder in-line engines available in Euro 3 and Euro 5 configurations. The Euro 3 OM460 is based on proven technology with pump line-nozzle injectors and single cylinder heads ensuring particularly robust technology. The new in-line six-cylinder layout has been optimised to boast higher torque at lower speeds
The new OM471 engine is available in two engine output ratings of 420hp and 450hp and maximum torque of 2 100 and 2 200Nm. All new Actros models are fitted with Mercedes Powershift 3 fully automated 12-speed transmissions as standard. The economy drive programme, standard on all highway truck tractors ensures a particularly economical driving style.
and a broader torque range along with optimised auxiliary consumers. The OM460 is available in four engine configurations ranging from 360hp to 450hp and torque ranging from 1 800Nm to 2 200Nm. The OM471 Euro 5 engine features the latest engine technology and is the most efficient engine in the new range. The high efficiency of the new 12.8 litre in-line six-cylinder is achieved by the unique common-rail X-Pulse injection system, which has the ability to boost the pressure from 1160 bar in the common rail system to 2700 bar in the individual injectors. This model is also equipped with exhaust gas recirculation - exhaust gasses are treated with SCR technology with AdBlue injection. In comparison to Euro II emission standards, the Euro 5 setup reduces NOx and particulate matter by up to 90 per cent.
The cabin of the new Actros has been optimised in every single detail, thanks to extensive wind tunnel testing. The windscreen has been further inclined to reduce aerodynamic drag, while roof and side deflectors guide the flow of air over the cabin and trailer ensuring a smoother transition zone that reduces wind turbulence and aerodynamic drag. Another enhancement is that StreamSpace cabs have no sun visor. In addition to Lane Keeping Assist, driver airbag and Stability Control Assist, additional safety features include Attention Assist and a seat belt monitor. An extremely comfortable L-cab StreamSpace 2,5m cabin, Alcoa Aluminium rims as well as adjustable top and side air-deflectors complement the high levels of standard equipment on these models. The Actros Pure offers exceptional economy at an exceptional price. It is equipped with the same driveline as the standard model but has a reduced scope of standard equipment to address the customer

requirement of having a more basic truck without compromising on efficiency and safety. The Pure retains the driver airbag and seatbelt monitor, but in terms of equipment it is finished with steel-reinforced rims, Jost 38-C 2-inch heavy-duty fifth wheel, cyclone pre-filter and a comfortable L-cab StreamSpace 2.3m cabin. Actros fuel specification models address the needs of the hazardous goods operator. These models are fully ADR and SANS1518 compliant and offer additional safety equipment into the standard Actros, offering including Active Brake Assist 4, Proximity Control Assist, Roll Control Assist and a driver’s seatbelt in red. The Active Brake Assist 4 system – with proximity Control Assist- initiates emergency braking if there is a risk of a collision and is the world’s first emergency brake system that can detect moving pedestrians. If the situation does not change and an accident seems unavoidable, the driver first receives a visual warning, followed by an audible warning. If the risk of a collision increases, partial braking is initiated -, that is to say 30 per cent of the full braking power is applied. If the driver still fails to react, the system applies full braking power automatically. Proximity Control maintains the set desired speed similarly to the manner in which cruise control works. When the truck approaches a vehicle ahead, the
16 Future Trucking & Logistics / June-July 2018
speed is adapted automatically according to the set distance. In stop-and-go traffic the system will automatically slow down the vehicle to a standstill, and move again after a short stop of less than two seconds without any driver intervention. Roll Control Assist adapts and varies the damping hardness to suit the driving situation and road conditions. Sensors monitor the vertical movements at the front and rear axle, brake pressure, vehicle load, accelerator movements and road speeds. Service intervals on the new Actros are all flexible, ensuring maximum value out of all service components. Service rates will save customers up to 6% and service intervals up to 50 000km for Euro 3 engines, and up to 80 000km for Euro 5 engines in long haul are possible, depending on customer application and route profile.

Crafter means business With a maximum permitted weight of 5 metric tonnes, a cargo volume of 17,5 mÂł and an excellent variety of drive types and derivatives, the new Crafter offers highly functional solutions for everyday use that will meet customer expectations for individual transport tasks in all areas. Reuben van Niekerk reports
N
ow in its fourth generation, the Crafter ends the trend of joint ventures and is now 100% Volkswagen with a design language familiar from other T-series models like the Transporter, ensuring a modern, fresh-looking face, and best in class aerodynamics. A variety of derivatives mean that there is a Crafter for most needs. Under the bonnet is a 2,0 litre TDI engine producing 103kW at 3500Nm and 340Nm at 1660rpm. Volkswagen claim a fuel consumption figure from as low as 7,3 litres/100km. Customers now also have a choice between front and rear wheel drive. The front wheel drive variants have a GVM of between 3.0 and 3.5 tons and offer the benefit of a lower loading sill. The rear wheel drive models boast dual rear tyres from 5.0 tons upwards.
18 Future Trucking & Logistics / June-July 2018
Up to three different vehicle lengths are available depending on the model chosen, and the closed body variants come with up to three different roof heights. As a panel van and kombi, the new Crafter is available in various lengths and heights. The cargo width between wheel arches of 1 380mm and a maximum cargo compartment length of 3 201mm give it the best package dimensions of its class. Loading is easy, thanks to a 1 311mm opening of the sliding door, a minimal sill height of 570mm on the front-wheel drive versions and optional 270 degree opening of the rear doors. The chassis, which has been redeveloped from the ground up and tuned in detail, uses a MacPherson front suspension and five different variants of a rigid rear axle, and parabolic springs that are progressive in certain derivatives.

Not just a pretty face The addition of a people carrier to a family or business fleet offers unrivalled practicality and functionality. The Hyundai H1 has become a firm favourite since its introduction and receives a new look and extra equipment to ensure it remains competitive. Reuben van Niekerk reports
H
yundai’s popular HI bus has received a bold new face in a make-over that is bound to elevate this market leader as an even bigger favourite among customers in need of a competent people-carrier that offers great value for money.
Some of the existing features that make the H1 the ideal family companion include Bluetooth connectivity and multifunction steering wheel, a fully automatic air-conditioner with climate control, glove box cooling, keyless entry, a side airbag, electronic folding mirrors and ESP.
The whole nose section of the H1 has been redesigned, giving the nine-seater bus, and its panel van sibling, a modern look that fits in with the styling of the Hyundai passenger car and SUV range, and it comes without an increase in price.
The H1 nine-seater Bus has been one of the most popular vehicles in the Hyundai line-up since its introduction in 2009, and seamlessly morphs from family companion to a commercial tool that businesses can use for transporting a number of people in luxurious comfort and safety.
New 17-inch alloy wheels add to the good looks of the 2,5 turbo-diesel derivative of the H1 range. The panel van is still equipped with 16-inch steel wheel rims. The addition of an infotainment centre with a large touch screen enhances the list of interior luxury and comfort features in both nine-seater derivatives. Satellite navigation is an optional extra at a nominal fee of R2522. The steering wheel can now adjusted for reach as well as height to make the driving position in the H1 even more comfortable. Projection style headlights have been added, too, which not only illuminates the road ahead more effectively, but also adds to the good looks of the new front end of the H1 bus.
22 Future Trucking & Logistics / June-July 2018
Transnet relies on a fleet of H1 vehicles to transport train drivers between their shifts, and these vehicles clock up about 20 000km per month reliably. The six-seater Multicab derivative has been discontinued from the range; however, individual orders with deposits for this practical derivative will still be considered. The refreshed H1 Bus is still available with a choice of two engines, a 2 359cc petrol engine delivering 126kW and 224Nm through a five-speed manual gearbox and a 2 497cc turbocharged diesel engine that delivers 125kW and 441Nm, which is transferred to the rear wheels via a five-speed automatic gearbox. Whatever the role, the genuine availability to carry eight people and their luggage over long distances - or nine if the seat between the driver and front passenger is
deployed - is the H1 Bus’s key strength, as unlike an MPV it does not suffer from the shortcoming of having minimal luggage space once the rearmost seats are in use. Adding to its appeal in a working application is the 1500kg towing capacity of the turbo-diesel derivatives. Handling characteristics of the H1 are car-like, with road holding that inspires confidence on all surfaces from good tar roads to corrugated gravel roads. The series is equipped with MacPherson-type strut suspension with gas shock absorbers upfront, and for the H1 nine-seater Bus a rigid axle five-link rear suspension with oil-filled shock absorbers ensures a comfortable ride. Dual leaf springs are used in the rear of the Panel Van, allowing it to carry 1 100kg and tow up to 1 500kg. The H1 is easy to park, thanks to a generous glass area and substantial side mirrors that ensure good all-round visibility. This has been supplemented by a rear-view camera with a display located in the rear-view mirror of the range-topping H1 2,5 turbo-diesel Bus. Pricing includes Hyundai’s five-year/150 000km warranty, with an additional two years/50 000km powertrain warranty, as well as a five-year/150 000km roadside assistance plan, and five-year/90 000km service plan. Pricing

Powerstar unveils new FT Series The launch of new Powerstar FT Series of medium sized trucks sees the strengthening of the Ever Star Industries (ESI) product portfolio of medium trucks in 4x2 configuration, complementing the well-established Powerstar brand of heavy and extra-heavy trucks
T
he FT Series debuted at the Automechanika Exhibition in Johannesburg Expo Centre in September 2017 following a joint venture between the two holding companies whereby ESI takes on board the Foton medium truck range and rebrands these under ESI’s top brand, Powerstar. The FT range will be offered in two variants, the FT3 and FT5, with Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) ratings of 7.5t and 8.7t respectively. ESI are now able to offer their customers a complete range of vehicles from 7.5t to 40t GVM, across the distribution, construction and long-haul segments. The range is powered primarily by Cummins engines, feeding torque through ZF transmissions, and will also be assembled at the ESI Assembly Plant in Pietermaritzburg, which is ISO 9001 certified, following the same exacting quality standards as is for the current Powerstar range. The FT range is also equipped with a three-seater day-cab which makes an excellent intercity distribution vehicle offering good payload potential. The smallest variant in the FT range is the FT3 with a GVM of 7 500kg. With a tare weight of 2 560kg a body and payload capacity of 4940kg is achieved. Powered by a Euro 3, 3.8ℓ Cummins ISF rated at 115kW, the common-rail engine has a generous 500Nm of torque over a wide 1200-1900rpm range. This allows for a drivable truck and low fuel consumption. Shifting is done through a six-speed ZF Ecolite manual transmission. The transmission can also be fitted with a Power Take-Off (PTO), depending on customer requirements. The second variant in the FT range is the FT5. The FT5 uses the same engine and transmission as the FT3, but differs from the FT3 through higher-capacity
24 Future Trucking & Logistics / June-July 2018
front and rear axles, for a GVM of 8700kg. This gives the FT5 a body and payload capacity of 5 860kg. Across the entire FT range safety has been addressed by the fitment of Wabco ABS air-operated disc brakes on the front and drums at the rear. In addition, an auxiliary exhaust brake is also standard on both variants. Driver comfort is also a priority with the fitment of an air-conditioner, electric mirrors and electric windows as standard, as well as a radio. Powerstar has also partnered with select bodybuilders to provide a turnkey solution and to ensure the bodies supplied are right for the vehicle. ESI places its full backing behind the new FT Series, with a two-year/unlimited mileage warranty on the entire vehicle. Service intervals are set at 15 000km and can be serviced at certified Powerstar FT dealerships. As part of the ESI dealer network, current Powerstar customers are supported with over 30 service centres around the country and dedicated Powerstar sales executives at full dealerships who ensure correct vehicle specification and a comprehensive aftersales support.

Intrepid coal transporter makes every kilometre count T
he coal transport industry is not for the faint of heart. To succeed you need grit, determination, astute business acumen and, importantly, a reliable and efficient truck fleet. PCC Logistics with its fleet of UD Trucks, is based in South Africa’s coal belt in the small town of Carolina, Mpumalanga. Initially operating just as independent coal traders, the logistics side of the company was established in 2007. “Leading up to us purchasing our own trucks, we made use of sub-contractors to transport the loads, but it just became a very challenging situation as we were not in complete control of the entire operational chain, and many of the logistics were out of our hands,” explained Maureen Reed, owner of Pyramid Coal Consultants. Reed then decided to step out and take the plunge into fleet ownership and management. “We approached UD Trucks Bethal for advice on which trucks to buy for our specific business requirements and application. We haven’t looked back since that first UD Trucks purchase,” said Reed. Two months after their initial purchase, it was clear that their fleet needed to expand to keep up with their contract demand. Today, as a relatively small yet productive operator, PCC Logistics operates seven UD Trucks, including some legendary UD 440s and later model Quon 460s. The company mainly transports coal from the mines in Mpumalanga, especially cross-border into Swaziland. At times the company also transports a variety of freight such as corn and aggregate. Reed explained that PCC Logistics has a very open partnership with its service dealer, UD Trucks Ermelo. “I have said it many times before, our success lies in the fact that we only service our trucks at accredited UD Trucks workshops. Only qualified UD Trucks technicians are allowed to touch our horses,” stated Reed. “If the truck goes in for its scheduled maintenance service, and they find any problems, the workshop
26 Future Trucking & Logistics / June-July 2018
communicates the solutions to us immediately. We value their advice and believe that this is the reason why some of our trucks have more than a million dependable kilometres behind them, and all our UDs are still going strong.” UD Trucks Ermelo’s group aftersales manager, Jacques Horn, said: “We as UD Trucks Ermelo feel part of the family of PCC Logistics. We are very proud of the mileage, productivity and efficiency the UD Trucks fleet has achieved over the years.” Horn said that as a UD Trucks dealer they believe that the transport business is more than just merely retailing trucks. “As an accredited dealer, we have to adhere to stringent quality standards, and are continuously measured across all disciplines, from parts to sales, service and admin, to offer our customers only the best service and after sales support,” said Horn. “We understand all the complexities involved in today’s transport industry, and we therefore are able to offer customers complete solutions, no matter the size of their business.” Reed said that it is clear from their fleet DNA that they are a great fan of UD Trucks. “Our success has also in large been due to our experienced drivers, who have treated their UD trucks with respect on every journey. “We tried bringing in another truck brand, but it simply didn’t work. More than just the trucks, it is about the level of support we receive that makes all the difference,” concluded Reed.

TruckX shifts up a gear
Truck 2018
Conference & Expo
Interactive events, conferences, workshops, networking opportunities and a vast array of blue chip exhibitors are expected to turn this year’s two-day TruckX extravaganza – to be held at Kyalami on July 11 and 12 – into an event to remember for members of Southern Africa’s commercial vehicle and fleet markets
N
ow in its fifth year, TruckX – Southern Africa’s all-encompassing, premier, interactive event for the commercial transport industry – has shifted up a gear. With a new headline sponsor, new industry partnerships and new events in parallel, the event is poised to break the record attendance figure it set last year.
Shell Fleet Solutions South Africa, says: “We believe that TruckX and FleetX are invaluable industry events. Shell South Africa is proud and delighted to have been afforded the opportunity to be one of the headline sponsors for 2018.”
“In line with our vision of creating an industry event that gives visitors an interactive, hands-on, practical experience, a full-blown exhibition and outside events were added to TruckX in 2017,” explains John Thomson, the exhibition organiser.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles also makes its début at this year’s FleetX, the co-located event dedicated to the light commercial vehicle and fleet segments of the industry. The world’s eighth largest auto maker will be supplying the express courier vehicles used for the highly popular “Speed in a Suit” competition.
“To accommodate the expanded format, TruckX moved from the Sandton Convention Centre to the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, attracting its highest number of visitors ever – over 2 100 people.”
The event pits courier industry leaders against one of Fiat Chrysler’s top drivers to see who is fastest around Kyalami’s dynamic handling track, using the least amount of fuel.
Thomson expects to increase attendance at this year’s show by 50%, since support from the industry for the enlarged expo and conference has been extremely encouraging – as borne out by some of last year’s attendees.
“The Speed in a Suit competition at TruckX/ FleetX provides us with the perfect opportunity for members of the South African Express Parcel Association to experience first-hand just how flexible our products are,” says Robin van Rensburg, CEO, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles South Africa.
“There is a crying need for a conference and exhibition of this calibre,” says Japie Burger, Transport Manager at ZZ2, a farming conglomerate that operates a fleet of 104 trucks. Norman Pillay, managing director of Jesslyn Carriers, agrees: “Last year’s expo showcased how technology in the transport industry is changing rapidly and evolving with the times. TruckX provides an excellent opportunity to get updates of events and to stay ahead of industry developments,” he says. Global energy group Shell has taken headline sponsorship for this year’s event. Commenting on this exciting news, Bongani Motloung, Sales Manager of
28 Future Trucking & Logistics / June-July 2018
“Our wide range of Fiat Professional vehicles offers solutions for any size or type of business. We are able to meet even the most diverse mobility and transport needs. We are proud to be a partner at this important industry event.” The popular and well-supported conferences – which retain the expanded, two-day format introduced last year – have been designed to highlight practical solutions to everyday challenges and problems associated with running large commercial or passenger fleets as well as offering insights to technological trends within the vehicle and telematics industries.

On each morning at TruckX, Supply Chain Today magazine, alongside the Federation of Eastern and Southern African Road Transport Associations (FESARTA) and CVLC, will run a number of jam-packed and informative workshops under the title Making Inter-State Transport Work in Africa. The agenda includes topics such as The Impact of the Revised RSA Customs Act; Cost Implications of Border Inefficiencies in the SADC region, as well as Carnet and Cargo Tracking Systems. A significant number of delegates from a wide range of African countries – backed by a cross section of speakers representative of the continent – are expected to attend. “TruckX is the only industry event that offers live demonstrations – a place for visitors to experience and interact with trucks,” says Thomson. “It is a much-needed home for trucking industry suppliers – and one which is supported by the trucking industry and broader commercial vehicle transport industry.”

Theft on the move: How to safeguard goods and personnel in transit With a spike in thefts from delivery vehicles causing havoc across the country, fleet owners and operators are looking for solutions to safeguard life and property. Says Morné Stoltz, MiWay Head of Business Insurance
I
ncidents of theft from delivery vehicles are occurring nationwide and seem to be increasing. In Cape Town, robbery and arson have disrupted supply chains. In KwaZulu-Natal, the Mooi River toll plaza made headlines with two separate incidents of coordinated attacks on, and looting of, trucks under the cover of “service-delivery protests”. The most recent attack, over the Freedom Day/ Workers’ Day long weekend, claimed upwards of 30 trucks and an estimated loss of R250 million. These and many other less publicised incidents are causing havoc across the country’s supply chains. In some instances, moving vehicles are being boarded, making it even more difficult for drivers to keep an eye on their load, and presenting a further threat to safety. Interruptions to the movement of goods are a threat to the smooth operation of the business, necessitating action against these determined criminals. Fleet owners and operators are looking for solutions to safeguard life and property. Safety for vehicles and staff begins with making sure all vehicles are roadworthy, loaded only to the recommended weight, and operated responsibly by an appropriately trained and well-rested driver. Overloaded vehicles are not only unsafe, but because they are more difficult to handle and slower, they can be boarded by opportunistic criminals when passing through towns or up steep hills. Further, to combat the problem, spikes can be fitted on strategic areas of the vehicle to deter would-be boarders. In the wake of the targeting of
32 Future Trucking & Logistics / June-July 2018
supermarket resupply trucks, unbranded delivery vehicles can be used instead. Additionally, vehicles carrying easily pilfered Morné Stoltz goods should have secure cargo areas, preferably in closed and locked bodies. From a stop-loss perspective, it is increasingly essential to make sure that appropriate insurance cover is in place, not only for the traditional ‘third party, fire and theft’, but also to cover the full cost of replacing all goods in transit. While this does not address the issue of supply chain disruption, it does minimise the financial impact of losses through theft or in case of an accident. A good insurer should provide tracking options, which include a ‘panic button’ for rapid response, should the vehicle come under attack. With threats to drivers themselves, many of whom have been robbed of their personal goods and cash, a panic button could mean the difference between life and death. The information your insurer has at its disposal from tracking devices should put it in a position to provide advice on potential hot spots and safer routes to take. Any high-risk routes (including those which require the vehicle to move slowly) should be avoided. Finally, bear in mind that insurance cover is only valid if the vehicle is roadworthy, appropriately loaded within its specified range and operated by qualified personnel. Once this is in place, consult with your insurer or broker to decide which of the risk-mitigation strategies and tools (some of which have been identified in this article) would be appropriate.
