here has been much talk about the change in the way cars will be owned in future, and along with the launch of the new XC40, Volvo is giving us a look at how they envisage this to develop.

Volvo have launched the Care by Volvo subscription service that will make having a car as transparent, easy and hasslefree as having a mobile phone: a national, ready-negotiated monthly fee, combined with getting a new car every 24 months.

Taking the legwork out of Pedal Power
After ordering the car online, Care by Volvo customers will be able to drive away in a new Volvo without having to worry about traditional extras such as deposits, insurance, taxes and service fees - a flat, monthly subscription will be their only expense. Care by Volvo will, depending on regional availability, offer a range of digital concierge services, such as fuelling, cleaning, service pick-up and e-commerce delivery to the car. Furthermore, a car-sharing feature will allow drivers to share their car with friends and family with the new digital key technology. In South Africa, the Care by Volvo business model and related services are under scrutiny for local introduction. A system like this could be the start of a complete revolution in vehicle ownership and usage, whether that be by private, fleet or vehicle rental users, and I cannot wait to see how it develops.

FCA moves forward! Fiat Group Automobiles South Africa and Chrysler South Africa have announced that the companies intend to fully integrate under the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles South Africa (FCASA) banner from early in 2018. Though the brands are served by a single management team, they have existed side-by-side in the South African market since 2012, operating as separate financial entities. To see the company forward, Robin van Rensburg was appointed CEO of FCA early this year. “My role so far at FCA has been very interesting and challenging and I am
looking forward to taking FCA South Africa to new heights,” he says. According to Van Rensburg, 2017 has been a challenging year with FCA’s brands not quite taking what he believes to be a deserving market share. However, a number of key new models have been introduced – encompassing Alfa Romeo’s Giulia and Fiat’s Tipo and Panda – with a view to helping to stimulating sales growth. “With 2017 drawing to a close, the FCA brands will not be slowing down,” Van Rensburg says. “Alfa Romeo will launch the Stelvio SUV,

Mazda Southern Africa’s 3rd Birthday Celebration On 1 October 2014, Mazda Southern Africa started operating from its Midrand-based head office as an independent national sales company. A full sales and service dealer network was put in place to operate in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland. In the short three years since operations began, Mazda has introduced several well-engineered and competitively priced new models showcasing Mazda’s KODO design philosophy and SKYACTIV Technology. In addition to new products, Mazda have also announced a number of initiatives that exhibit the company’s defying convention brand motto.

These include an industry first 3-year Unlimited kilometre factory warranty, three-year Unlimited kilometre roadside assistance, and 3-year Unlimited kilometre service plan on passenger vehicles, while the BT-50 Customer Care Plan was introduced to assure a like-for-like courtesy vehicle for BT-50 owners. In February 2017, the company announced Mazda’s Lifetime Parts Warranty another industry-first where Mazda commits to the repair or replacement of any part fitted as part of a retail repair that fails to perform its normal function. The repair or replacement will be without any charge to the vehicle
owner for the lifetime of the vehicle’s original owner. Forging its own strategic direction, Mazda’s focus has always been on building solid dealer partner relations. This strategy has proved to be a success, with evident results from the 2017 NADA DSI Awards. Mazda Southern Africa was presented with a gold award, ranked within the top 25% of manufacturers, and is now among the most investor-friendly brands in South Africa. Mazda’s current model line-up includes Mazda2, Mazda3, CX-3, CX-5, MX-5 and the Mazda BT-50.

In between these models, the stonking Grand Cherokee Trackhawk – powered by a supercharged 527kW V8 engine – will be introduced in the performance SUV segment. Numerous new model additions will also be added to the Italian brands to keep the line-ups fresh,” he says.
“We will, however, continue to support and service the existing Chrysler and Dodge vehicles through our franchised dealers.” He adds that new dealerships are planned for Sandton, Fourways, Menlyn and Durban, expanding FCA’s network to 42 outlets. Also on the cards is a move by head office to new premises in the second half of 2018.
“The company has out-grown its current facilities and is looking to relaunch itself with a brighter and more modern corporate image,” Van Rensburg says. On the downside, Chrysler and Dodge “FCA’s brands have succeeded in the brands will no longer being available past, and, will once again, become a locally. “This unfortunate situation has force to be reckoned with in the local arisen from our principals in the USA no market. Volkswagen and Qhubeka putting the future in motion As the maker of ‘the people’s cars’, Volkswagen puts people at the heart of what they do, making them passionate about South Africans, and playing a vital role in moving people forward. Under the banner of ‘Volkswagen for Good’, Volkswagen seeks to provide motion with meaning to South Africa, and the sponsorship of the Bicycle Education Empowerment Programme (BEEP) or ‘Blue Bikes’ project is one such example. Now in the third year of partnership, Volkswagen South Africa and Qhubeka (meaning to ‘progress’ or ‘move forward’) continue to transform hope into reality with the simple gift of motion. In rural South Africa, the youth may be in need of numerous commodities, but one thing they do not lack is ambition and hope. They know who, what and where they want to be. As South Africans we dream. However, what the youth do need is a little help in reaching their dreams. Blue Bikes is the first step in fulfilling this need. Volkswagen believes that education is the foundation for their future, and that a child’s learning should not be hindered by their lack of mobility. With 11 million of SA’s 17 million school children still walking to school,
taking some of them up to four hours a day to travel to and from school, the need for transport is palpable. Over the past three years, Volkswagen, in partnership with Qhubeka, has donated almost 3 000 Blue Bikes to children across South Africa to give them the priceless gift of time. Volkswagen believes that less time traveling to school means more time to learn, more time to play, more time with family, and simply, and probably most powerfully, the time to just be a child. This year Volkswagen, together with Qhubeka, has committed once more to help mobilise the youth for a better future, and has committed to distributing a total of 1 100 bicycles in 2017. The project was brought to Gauteng, where 98 bicycles were donated to children at Kwa-Bhekilanga Secondary School and East Bank
High School, health workers and community policing forum (CPF) volunteers. The bicycles have been funded through a Rand-for-Rand matching mechanism, whereby City of Johannesburg has matched the funds raised by Volkswagen South Africa. “Volkswagen’s vision is to provide sustainable mobility for Africa by way of German engineering, and this programme fits in with that philosophy and shows our human side,” said Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director of Volkswagen Group South Africa. “We also hope that through having been beneficiaries of a bicycle, that this will leave a lasting impression in the minds of a handful of young South Africans and, hopefully, inspire more to dream big,” added Schaefer.

DHL The only company to be named top employer in 18 African countries
DHL Express has been certified as a Top Employer in Africa for the fourth executive year, at the prestigious Top Employer Africa 2018 certification ceremony, held at Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg recently. Hennie Heymans, CEO, DHL Express Sub-Saharan Africa, explains that this is the fourth consecutive year that DHL has been awarded the honour by the Top Employers Institute. “DHL Express values its employees and strives to make the company a rewarding place to work at. We are proud to have that fact affirmed by Top Employers Institute.” This year, DHL was the only company to be certified as a Top Employer in 18

markets in Africa, including Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Morocco, Nigeria, Namibia, South Africa, Senegal, Uganda and Zambia. “DHL has cultivated an insanely customer-centric culture across the entire organisation, which we see as a critical component of our success. Maintaining this culture across the world has relied heavily on our effective employee engagement programmes,” said Heymans. “It therefore goes without saying that employee motivation and development are important areas of focus for us. We are committed to having a team of high performers who operate in a high performance culture that promotes and drives leadership diversity.” According to Heymans, DHL’s use of employee initiatives and programmes, including the company’s Certified International Specialist (CIS) cultural
change programme, has helped to unlock the potential of the company’s employees across sub-Saharan Africa. “This year, we have placed greater emphasis on up-skilling and empowering middlemanagers and supervisors, as this rung of leadership is pivotal to the leading and executing of our growth aspirations in the years to come. As we continue to grow, we need every person in the business to understand their role and how to execute it efficiently. After all, the role of supervisors and middle-managers is to build trust and inspire great performance.” DHL also recently completed the annual Employee Opinion Survey, which provides a platform for personnel to convey their thoughts and sentiments anonymously about the company. “This is an important tool in helping us identify what we are doing well, as well as areas that require improvement,” added Heymans.
Datsun Go takes the honours as SA’s most affordable car The annual Kinsey Report has – for the third time in a row – announced that Datsun GO has been named South Africa’s most affordable car. The Kinsey Report, which is regarded as the most comprehensive survey on everyday motoring, covers vehicles available locally. The report surveyed parts pricing of 69 vehicles across nine segments, and the prices were sourced during July 2017. The Kinsey Report focuses on the price of car parts which ultimately affects your insurance premium and repair costs on a vehicle. The report highlights the true cost of vehicle ownership, and has become the benchmark of independent parts pricing survey in the South African motoring industry. Under the category of City Cars – entry-level cars for firsttime buyers, the Datsun GO has been named the best overall in the service,
In addition, our Employee of the Quarter and Employee of the Year awards are presented to our star performers, who are nominated by fellow employees. “We believe that the power of our incredible network is our people, so strategic planning and programme implementation are vital.” To be certified as a Top Employer in Africa, a company needs to operate in four or more countries and have exceptional employee conditions. access new opportunities within the economy,” says Fenner.
“With 2017 results of the Kinsey report, there is further evidence of the Datsun Go’s attractive pricing structure in SA, which ensures that South Africans can still maintain their vehicles at affordable prices, even in these tough economic conditions,” says Des Fenner, General Manager of Datsun South Africa of the GO’s major achievement.
The affordability of parts, in conjunction with class-leading fuel consumption, makes the total cost of ownership (TCO) one of the best in South Africa. Not only is the purchase price of the car affordable (now at R 1,999 per month – 0% dep/72 months, includes 1-year insurance and a new smartphone), but the TCO over the life of the car is the most affordable
By scooping the title for the third consecutive year, it is testimony that Datsun is fulfilling its promise to bring quality, affordable motoring to South Africans. “The Datsun GO has brought independence from public transport schedules to many, and provided them with the personal mobility that has enabled these buyers to find and
He further maintains that, “the GO has not only helped motorists to contain motoring costs at a time when there are massive budget pressures on most households, but has also enabled many South Africans to enter the new-car market for the first time. The Datsun GO continues to make an indelible impression on the entry-level vehicle segment.”
and independent research by getting employees in the relevant companies to complete an HR best practice survey. The Top Employers Institute survey assesses human resource strategy, policy implementation, practices and employee offerings, to reveal whether the company provides exceptional employee conditions, develops talent on all levels, and demonstrates leadership through optimising the development of its employees and employee practices.
Every completed survey is reviewed by the Top Employers Institute, and then the process is audited by a third party. Only organisations that qualify from the selection process receive the Top Employers title and certification seal, but all participants receive a comprehensive feedback report. “We are honoured to have been certified as a Top Employer in Africa for yet another year, and we will strive to ensure we maintain our focus on attracting, retaining and developing our people across the region,” concluded Heymans.

Volkswagen launches new Customer App The experience of owning a Volkswagen vehicle has just been made easier with the launch of the My VW Customer App. With the My VW App, owners will be able to have all their vehicle data and information available to them at the click of a button. “The My VW App is part of Volkswagen’s digitalisation strategy, and is another way in which we are bringing the full Volkswagen experience to our customers,” says Stefan Mecha, Sales & Marketing Director at Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA). The My VW App allows customers to register their own profiles and connect with their vehicle details, which helps them to effectively manage their own information. Some of the features on the My VW App allows users to request a service appointment at their nearest service centre, book a test drive, request a quote for a new car, access their car’s service history, as well as view and manage their financial contract information. “At the beginning of this month, the Volkswagen Brand was awarded the Most Innovative Brand 2017 in Germany, and this speaks to that fact that as a company we are committed to innovation in all spheres of our business,” said Stefan Mecha. The My VW App also has two unique features, namely the Volkswagen Alert Roadside Assistance and the Guardian Angel tools. “Roadside Assistance provides users with a direct line to the Volkswagen Roadside Assist call centre, which sends exact GPS coordinates at the same time, so they do not need to worry about finding out and relaying their precise location, while the Guardian Angel feature is a journey-tracking tool, which notifies select friends or family of a driver’s journey progress and sends alerts if there is a journey disruption,” added Mecha. “As Volkswagen, we want to stay abreast of technological advance-

Toyota wins 2017 SAVRALA Manufacturer of the Year award Toyota representatives: Patrick Carroll, Ramatjitla Penyane, Christine Kruger, Leon Theron, Johannn Theart, Michelle Schwartz
Toyota has won the 2017 SAVRALA MOTY (Manufacturer of the Year) award which recognises superlative levels of service, new standards in technology and safety, and continual improvements in delivery standards by vehicle manufacturers as rated by their customers – the car rental sector.
T
his victory by Toyota ends a 7-year string of victories by Volkswagen, which slips to second and is followed by Hyundai in third in the overall rankings. Each year, members of the South African Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (SAVRALA) bestow annual awards on those motor manufacturers who they feel have provided them with the best possible support and assistance during that period. These awards are based on the results of a continually revised and improved, industry-specific survey containing 38 criteria asked twice during the year from 24 of the largest Rental and Leasing companies in South Africa. Questionnaires are completed not by one individual in each company, but by a panel of people who depend on and deal directly with each manufacturer. This results in obtaining an accurate, objective, unbiased and company-

wide perspective of the service levels experienced. The results from this competition enable each manufacturer to identify their strengths and work on areas of weakness as highlighted to them by their customers. Areas of evaluation for the Rental channel include: • Communication, covering the timeous and accurate information on new models, pricing and vehicle delivery, as well as regular manufacturer contact, • Support, which looks at the quality of operational support and ability to accommodate industry-specific requirements, as well as timeous delivery of vehicles • Maintenance, rating the technical training, contact with the technical representatives, response to technical issues and warranty claims, dealer support, parts availability and
flexibility on Goodwill and Policies, • Value, which covers the protection of residual value and pricing structures • B-BBEE compliance No changes were made to the Rental questionnaire or the weights applied to the Rental data, enabling valid comparisons with the 2016 results. Compared with 2016, the 2017 Communication score declined by more than 3%, mostly due to the manufacturers not providing the rental companies with timeous and comprehensive information on new models. Manufacturers have somewhat improved the level of Support provided, as the Support section has improved by 1.7%. The impact of the improvement in Support is, unfortunately, reduced by the decline of 1.7% in the Maintenance category. The prompt response to referred technical issues has declined significantly since 2016, as has most criteria in this section. Despite the challenging economical times, it is heartening to see a slight increase in the Value section, driven by the Pricing and Fleet discount

and parts availability • Financial, looking at fleet pricing structures and discounts and residual value • Dealer Support, including delivery issues and aftersales service • B-BBEE compliance Except for the top two Leasing Manufacturers, the Leasing scores are notably lower than the Rental scores for most of the manufacturers, leaving room for improvement in the next year in the Leasing section. structures which are rated more favourably than last year. Manufacturers are also evaluated on their contribution to B-BBEE. While Tata and Hyundai are the only manufacturers who managed to improve their B-BBEE ratings, five manufacturers have lower ratings than last year. Hence the overall drop of more than 10% on Industry level for the Rental manufacturers. All things considered, the Overall Rental Industry score has dropped 1.4% since 2016.
2017 also saw the re-introduction of the Leasing companies rating the service provided to them by the various motor manufacturers. The Leasing survey was last conducted in 2014, making it risky to read too much into any score changes since. The Leasing questionnaire measures: • Communication / Marketing, including regular visits, information on production issues, pre-launch and ongoing information • Technical Support, measuring the technical relationship as well as provision of technical information
Communication / Marketing fared the worst, with all questions in this section scoring very low. The Technical Support and Financial sections scored better, but judging by the scores achieved there is a lot of work to be done in both areas. Dealer Support was rated the best area, with the delivery quality of the vehicles the criteria rated best. B-BBEE compliance continues to be a major obstacle, as 15 of the 26 manufacturers (58%), evaluated in the Leasing survey are not compliant with current B-BBEE legislation. Tata currently has the best B-BBEE rating of those included in the Leasing survey. Rental Results for 2017: MOTY is all about rewarding the best service providers, and this year’s

The 2.4 GD-6 turbodiesel and 2.7 VVTi petrol engines are offered in mid-grade trim – whilst the 2.8 GD-6 and 4.0 litre V6 engines are paired with the high-grade specification level. Buyers are further spoilt for choice with the addition of a new 2.4 GD-6 4x4 6AT model. This unique derivative provides ‘explorers’ a gateway into off-roading with the inclusion of a ‘select-on-the-fly’ four-wheel drive transmission – which includes low-range. The combination of the four-wheel drive layout and automatic transmission, brings effortless offroading at a more affordable price within the Fortuner range. Utilising the proven 110kW and 400Nm 2.4 GD-6 four cylinder mill, the newcomer returns a frugal 8.2 litre per 100 kilometre fuel index, with
CO2 emissions pegged at 217 g/km. Boasting an 80 litre fuel tank, this equates to a range of over 900 kilometres on a single fill. The 2.4 GD-6 and 2.7 models receive a generous safety spec bolstering, with the addition of a driver knee airbag, as well as side and curtain airbags. These additions ensure that the entire Fortuner range offers a complete set of active and passive safety features – which includes VSC, HAC and TSC. The 4x4 models feature Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) which continuously monitors wheel slip and proportions torque accordingly. The 2.8 GD-6 and V6 models’ comfort and convenience ‘fact sheet’ now sees the inclusion of an electricallyoperated tailgate and 220V accessory connector. An added touch of modernity is afforded with the change from Halogen fog lamps to the LED variety – creating uniformity with the Bi-LED headlamps.
These latest spec additions round out the already comprehensive feature list, which includes Smart Entry, leather interior, multi-information display, Bluetooth, USB, cruise control and 3rd row seating. The 2.8 GD-6 and V6 models add Automatic Climate Control, reverse camera, touchscreen audio, leatherand-wood steering wheel, softtouch finishes, electric driver seat adjustment and full- colour TFT multiinformation display. The interior space serves up a myriad of storage compartments, cup and bottle holders – perfect for road trips. Two in-dash storage compartments are provided, which includes a ‘coolbox’ feature in the top binnacle. Pioneering the WAY MiWay Business Insurance policy holders benefit from Ctrack Insurance Telematics solutions Morné Stoltz, Head of Business Insurance at MiWay Loxton
L
ittle more than a year ago, MiWay Business Insurance and vehicle tracking company Ctrack by Inseego announced a partnership aimed at delivering risk management solutions to the insurance company’s commercial clients. According to spokesmen for MiWay and Ctrack, the pioneering initiative – co-created to help the insurer proactively manage risk associated with the movement of high-value consignments around the country – has proved to be extremely successful. “The bespoke, high-tech system that we have developed indicates that the traditional insurance model is changing rapidly,” says Morné Stoltz, Head of Business Insurance at MiWay. “Data that we receive in real time via Ctrack’s telematics systems provide information that is crucial for our understanding as insurers – and which simultaneously provide fleet owners with valuable insights regarding anything from weather and road conditions to driver behaviour and the position of the vehicle. “The telematics and software applications stretch far beyond vehicle tracking and recovery – they have helped us to effectively manage risk and simultaneously have opened up lines of business that previously we were unlikely to have accepted, simply because traditional insurance models would have precluded our involvement.” He says the MiWay and Ctrack partnership has proved to be a good fit. “I believe we have developed a world class system that, through the information it provides, facilitates far better risk management than we were able to achieve using traditional

protocols, and which has delivered substantial benefits to our clients, too.” Pierre Bruwer, Vice President of New Business Development at Ctrack, says the insurance telematics system is currently in Phase One, with opportunity for expansion imminent. “By minimising risk, we have been able to reduce MiWay’s loss ratio and enabled the company to bring new insurance products to the commercial vehicle and fleet sectors through the use of accurate telematics data and supporting analysis – which were among the initial aims of the partnership. “With those objectives achieved, we are looking at ways of improving and widening our focus. Already, we are at the stage of being able to predict when an accident is likely to happen… that’s just one aspect we are exploring. “Each of us has learned a lot through our co-operation – there’s a proper DNA match between our companies and a lot of mutual respect. Our values are
similar. We have seen the power of data and the accuracy it enables. Now it’s time to take the concept further.” Bruwer says Ctrack will launch new capabilities to the insurance industry in the coming months, taking the company further into the IOT space and presenting opportunities for insurers to change traditional paradigms. Going forward, Stoltz maintains that information obtained from telematics systems is likely to play an increasingly important role for insurers as well as for fleet and vehicle owners. “Research indicates that there is likely to be a big uptake by members of both industries. “With Ctrack as our partner, MiWay is pleased to be at the cutting edge on the insurance side – the system which we’ve created is at the forefront of development.” • For more information on commercial vehicle insurance, visit www.miway. co.za/business-insurance.

The start of a NISSAN REVOLUTION Nissan is really on a roll. They have recently posted their best market share in 10 years and their best Dealer Satisfaction Index in 7 years, with a big emphasis on the light commercial market. They have put an aggressive strategy in place to do the same in the passenger car market. Reuben van Niekerk reports
T
he first move in this strategy is the launch of the Micra Active. Essentially the previous generation model with a few enhancements, this model fills a gap where competitors like the VW Polo Vivo and Renault Sandero have had great success. The upgrades endow the Micra Active with sporty exterior upgrades as well as higher levels of interior specification. The Micra Active retains its reputation as a compact vehicle with a spacious and versatile interior, but it now benefits from a sportier aesthetic. The interior fabric has been improved with a new design, and the centre cluster and instrument cluster have also been refreshed. Features include manual airconditioning, front power windows, Bluetooth with audio streaming

Mitsubishi launched the world’s first passenger vehicle with full-time four-wheel drive - the PX33 - in 1933. More than 80 years later, Mitsubishi are launching their all-new Pajero Sport, a luxurious purpose-built sport SUV delivering similar refined driving dynamics as many powerful, spacious and luxurious sedans, for a much more favourable price than its peers.
T
he stylishly designed, newgeneration Mitsubishi SUV offers vastly improved driving dynamics, including a class-leading eight-speed automatic transmission for both the 2WD and 4WD models the latter including low-range - as well as Mitsubishi’s latest version of its Super Select 4-II 4WD system which now also boasts electronic off-road assistance. The new Pajero Sport is powered by Mitsubishi’s new-generation highperformance MIVEC four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine producing 133kW at 3500 revs/min and 430Nm at 2500 revs/min.

One of the most anticipated features is the fitment of the latest version of Mitsubishi’s unique Super Select 4-II 4WD system, which now boasts electronic off-road assistance as well. Hill descent control has been added for additional safety, and makes traversing treacherous terrain a simple affair: once the speed is set, the driver need only steer the vehicle while the clever system ensures safe passage down the steepest trails. The selectable off-road mode maximises traction on unsealed surfaces by allowing the driver to select either the Gravel, Mud/Snow,
Sand or Rock setting to suit surface conditions and optimise engine output, transmission settings and braking for superior traction. The eight-speed automatic transmission also offers a Sport Mode with manual shifting and paddle shifts. Under the skin the newcomer boasts double wishbone coil springs with a stabilizer bar in the front and multilink suspension with stabilizer bar in the back. The quiet drive, thanks to its strong, ladder-frame design which absorbs all levels of NVH, gives the new Pajero Sport a big sedan-car-like ride and handling.

Another massive advantage is its classleading turning circle of just 11,2m, which allows the agile new Pajero Sport to turn on a dime. The distinctive styling is energetic and striking, while making the intrepid statement that it is capable of comfortably conquering any terrain. As far as cabin features are concerned, the latest Pajero Sport stands proud in the presence of its direct competitors and some much pricier luxury sedans. Soft-feel leather seats further enhance the quality feel of the new Pajero Sport. The driver seat is electrically adjustable. The second row of seats offers a 60:40 split, with tumble, reclining and sliding function, and with a centre armrest and cup holders.
The third row of seats folds flat into the floor to minimise intrusion into the cargo space when not in use. The overall experience is improved, thanks to rear park distance control with a rear-view camera, dual automatic airconditioning with rear passenger temperature controls and an electric parking brake. Other standard features include a keyless operating system with electronic start function, multifunction steering wheel and Bluetooth. Standard built-in safety features include Active Stability and Traction Control, ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, Brake Override system and six airbags.
The new Pajero Sport line-up consists of two high-specification derivatives, 4x4 and 4x2, both powered by Mitsubishi’s new-generation superresponsive MIVEC turbo-diesel engine. If it is a package consisting of luxury and real 4x4 ability that you are after, and if it is value for money you crave, you will be hard-pressed to look beyond the keenly priced and wellequipped Pajero Sport. Mitsubishi is confident that the Pajero Sport will fit in nicely with their existing product line-up and customer base, while luring new lifestyle customers with its sophisticated carlike driving dynamics, luxurious comfort and elegant style, as well as its admirable off-road reputation.

The COMEBACK kid At the beginning of 2017, the topic of conversation around braaivleis fires and water coolers was dominated by the Ford Kuga, unfortunately for the wrong reasons. Ford has turned this situation around, and recently launched a new Kuga. Reuben van Niekerk reports

recall, and 60% through the second phase which includes the fitment of new hardware, a coolant level sensor, and software that reduces engine power when a fault is detected.
Affected cars required components in the cooling system to be replaced and software updated. The recall was implemented following an approach to the company by the Government’s National Consumer Commission (NCC) in the wake of media reports of underbonnet fires in a number of Kugas.
Coming back from a situation like this is not easy, but the new Kuga is being launched with lower pricing than the outgoing model, an all turboengine line-up, class-leading driver assistance systems, and infotainment in terms of the Sync3 system.
Ford has admitted that customers have lost faith in the brand, and will be doing everything they can to turn this situation around, with a dedicated team in place focusing on customers, in order to improve perceptions. “We believe we are taking the right steps in rebuilding the Ford brand,” said Casper Kruger, Managing director of Ford Motor Company Sub-Saharan Africa Region. Taking the legwork out of PEDAL POWER
BMW has an answer to easier cycling – the company’s new Active Hybrid e-bike includes a powerful, battery powered motor
I
f you ever feel the need to get out of your truck’s cab and take to the road on a bicycle, BMW’s Lifestyle division claims to have written the next chapter in the success story associated with the company’s manually powered two-wheelers.
pedal assistance – over a range of up to 100km – is a rechargeable, removable 504Wh battery. The rider can adjust the degree of pedal assistance with ease – four different power modes can be selected,” says the statement.
The division has just introduced to market a bike that’s been designed to take the legwork out of pedal power for up to 100km at a stretch – the Active Hybrid e-bike.
The Eco setting is designed to halve legwork by supplying 50% of pedal effort. And, if the rider wants to sit back in the saddle and let the electric motor expend all of the effort, the Turbo setting will boost human pedal power by as much as 275%.
“The bike demonstrates once again how innovative technology and sophisticated design can come together into an aesthetically pleasing overall concept,” says a statement released by the company. The e-bike is equipped with a comprehensively revised, geared drivetrain which has been equipped with a technically advanced Brose electric motor that can be activated at any time to provide a significant power boost to supplement the rider’s pedal power. Producing 250W and 90Nm, the motor is said to inject to cycling the dynamism for which the German company’s cars are renowned. “Providing the energy for the electric

“The e-bike captures the imagination with both its technical components and its design. For example, the motor and battery are fully integrated into the hydro-formed aluminium frame, highlighting the bike’s elegantly sporty silhouette,” the statement adds. For riders who want to remain connected while in the saddle, the bicycle features an integrated USB socket as well as Bluetooth to enable smartphone use. And talking of saddles, the one styled for the e-bike is said to represent state of the art design. “Saddle maker Selle Royale commissioned BMW Group subsidiary
Designworks to develop the first ever eZone saddle tailored specifically to the requirements of e-bikers,” says the statement. “The innovative form is based on a concept fine-tuned to the particular attributes of e-bikes and the needs profiles of their riders. “A short nose, a rising seat surface at the rear and moving side wings create a stable seating position and improve balance when pushing off, accelerating or braking. Comfort is courtesy of three-zone padding which features 3D Skingel and Royal Gel, while a fiberglass handle integrated into the underside of the saddle makes the bike easier to lift.” Other features include aluminium mudguards front and rear, LEDstyled headlight and tail light clusters and adjustable suspension. Best of all, though, when you’ve finished your ride, simply plug in the bike at a wall socket to recharge the battery for your next excursion. According to BMW, the Active Hybrid e-bike will be sold through selected dealerships around the world. However, it can also be ordered online at http://shop.bmw.com/.
