hat fleets will look like in future is something that this industry is continually asking itself and, thanks to developments in personal aviation, the motor car might soon be rendered redundant. Forget smartphone-based ride-sharing and autonomously driven vehicles. Commercial drones just got a big upgrade: A fleet of passenger-carrying quadcopters could be flying around our big cities soon. The city’s new transportation option is an egg-shaped, single-passenger drone in the traditional quadcopter style seen in many commercial drones. The Chinese-made Ehang 184 can carry one passenger weighing up to 100 kilograms, and a small suitcase. Once the passenger is buckled in and selects a destination, the drone automatically flies off. A control room will monitor the drones remotely via 4G mobile Internet. With a battery that lasts for up to 30 minutes of flight and with a range of up to about 50 kilometres, the passengercarrying drone can offer commuters an alternative to the ever-worsening traffic situations in big cities. Passenger-carrying drones are the latest step in Dubai’s vision for a technologically advanced transportation future, and could potentially be an answer to relieving the world’s traffic congestion problems. Avis launches new car rental group dedicated to VW Polo TSI: Group B+
A
vis has listened to its customers and has now introduced a new car rental booking group dedicated to one of its most popular car rental models. Following the demand to rent the VW Polo TSI, Avis has moved the popular VW Polo TSI into a dedicated group – Group B+.
The smart and stylish VW Polo TSI is in a group of its own making it easy for customers to book and rent with Avis. The VW Polo TSI, the zippy, quick town car, has always been highly sought after. It is also one of the safest hatchbacks around, with four airbags and an ABS braking system. You can also enjoy its standard fittings of air conditioning, central locking and electric windows. Lance Smith, Executive: Sales at Avis southern Africa says, “We are very excited about the new and dedicated car rental Group B+. At Avis, we constantly ensure that we prioritise our customers’ requests and meet their needs. Now customers can conveniently rent the VW Polo TSI and feel the comfort, class and safety of this hatch, coupled with quality and the best value for money.” With the convenience of booking directly through Group B+, Avis customers can rest assured that their favorite model is ready and waiting.
New vehicle sales continue to show growth South Africa (Naamsa). While this growth appears significant, and in contradiction to the general economic sentiment, it is important to note that the dealer channel, which is much more representative of the actual performance of the market, is marginally down by 0.8%. By contrast, the car rental market showed strong growth of 19% and single unit sales grew, largely in the public sector, by just short of 10%.

Year-to-date, the industry is still performing to expectations, growing 1.7% (with dealer sales growing 1.2%) against a backdrop of sustained political and economic uncertainty, low business and consumer confidence and low economic growth rates. This contradictory sales performance is attributed to a number of factors, including increased marketing incentives from manufacturers and dealers, making vehicle purchases more attractive to buyers, as well as slowing sales in the used car market, due to higher price inflation and decreasing stock levels.
In terms of segmentation, pressure is emerging in the luxury segments, which provides further evidence that the host of negative factors are impacting all car buyers. The light commercial vehicle (LCV) and the commercial vehicle segments remain under pressure, declining 1.7% and 4.5%, respectively, which is reflective of the lack of investment in capacity-building among corporates. “Looking forward, we are of the view that the market will track sideways as the country approaches key political moments,” says Chris de Kock, Group CEO of WesBank. “Recent developments have also increased the potential for an economic downgrade later this month, and this will add further stress to the market which has benefited from a reducing interest rate environment. The weak rand and rising oil prices will result in higher fuel costs, another vital input impacting on the fortunes of the motor industry.”
Engen and Edcon partner up for rewards

ngen has launched an exciting new partnership with Edcon’s Thank U loyalty programme. According to Engen’s Head of Retail, Seelan Naidoo, the partnership is another way that Engen is putting customers first. “By partnering with one of the most popular rewards programmes in the country, this initiative will offer Engen and Edcon customers additional value and more ways to earn loyalty points,” says Naidoo. he Bloodhound Supersonic Car (Bloodhound SSC), which aims to break the current world land speed record and reach 1600km/h, reached a significant milestone recently as it successfully completed its first test runs at Cornwall Airport Newquay in the UK. Bloodhound SSC, driven by current record holder Wing Commander Andy Green, reached speeds of up to 338km/h on the 2.7km long runway. Bloodhound SSC accelerated at a rate of 1.5G, reaching 322km/h from a standing start in just eight seconds. This test marked the culmination of a month of tests and was the first opportunity to prove the car’s

The points are restricted to the purchase of fuel and do not include the purchase of products from an Engen QuickShop or any other services available on an Engen forecourt,” explains Naidoo. Loyalty programmes have developed significantly over the past few years, and research has shown that consumers often plan their monthly budget around their reward programmes.

Bloodhound SSC is powered by an incredible 100 669kW, which is more than six times the total power output of the entire field of starters in Formula One! To achieve this immense power output and the target speed, the project team, led by Richard Noble, is placing its trust in a jet engine, rocket propulsion and, not least, a variety of high-performance lubricants from Castrol including their strongest engine oil, Castrol Edge Supercar.

Vehicle quality in SA continues to improve Fuel consumption was the biggest cause for customer complaint in 13 of the 16 vehicle model segments into which Ipsos divided the SA market. This issue is driven to a broader degree by the high price of fuel and the continual changes in price, with the current prevailing inflationary conditions we see. The only categories that did not rate fuel consumption as the biggest bugbear were Sports Coupé (park assist issues), Multi-Purpose Vehicles (road holding), and Large Recreational Vehicles (satellite navigation systems difficult to operate). However, fuel consumption was still second for both MPV and Large Recreational Vehicles, with engine malfunction being the second-biggest gripe for Sports Coupé owners.
D
espite our comparatively small market, South African vehicle buyers not only have one of the widest selections of new vehicles in the world from which to choose, but they also benefit from very high quality standards in terms of vehicle quality and customer service. This favourable state of play is annually confirmed for local motorists via data from the various detailed surveys conducted by the South African subsidiary of the international research company, Ipsos. The Ipsos vehicle quality survey underwent a major revamp in 2015, when its scope was extended to include vehicle design aspects as highlighted by owners, in addition to the ‘defects only’ approach of the previous survey structure. This altered scores significantly, as the average number of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) measure went from 37 PP100 – the lowest in the 23-year history of this research – to a combined score of 81 PP100 for the combination of defect and design problems. “This increase is not indicative of reduced quality, but rather because the methodology changed to allow for much greater sensitivity to the real customer experience,” explained Patrick Busschau, the Ipsos Automotive Business Unit Director. This year the
6
FLEET
combined figure is down to 73 PP100, an improvement of 10% in combined defect and design issues. “As consumers, we can all be very pleased and proud to see that our automotive industry average has once again improved, despite the addition of subjective design issues,” Busschau commented. “This is a credit to the automotive industry, because most problems linked to perceived design issues which bother customers these days, are more likely related to their individual expectations and needs around the product experience. Measuring the product experience this way enables the manufacturers to truly address customer needs, and to adjust their designs if necessary to align with their customer expectations. This is opposed to the past, when only straight defects and production errors with the vehicle were used to calculate the PP100 scores. “Now the goalposts have moved significantly, and we have adapted our measurement system accordingly, to accept design issues in addition to concrete defects. There is a weighting applied, as tangible defects have a slightly higher impact on the customer experience, so have a greater loading in the scoring,” explained Busschau.
Low performance, road-holding, unspecified noises and audio malfunction were the other vehicle quality complaints that were rated second highest by the buyers surveyed. The complex technology systems found in today’s vehicles resulted in matters such as information system issues and tyre-sensor issues being listed among the third-ranked complaints. “There is some good consistency in the results, because despite 17 brands being represented in this very robust survey, only seven brands collected gold awards, with ten going to Toyota, eight to Nissan, six to Volkswagen, and five to Audi. Ford collected two gold awards, with Opel and Renault collecting one each. These awards included Volkswagen and Toyota tying on 60 points for the best local plants manufacturing passenger cars. In some cases, the difference between the various brands is too small to separate, so both qualify for gold,” added Busschau. The Passenger Car category was closely contested, with Audi, Volkswagen and Toyota each collecting four gold awards, while Nissan picked up three and Ford two. In the Recreational Vehicle category Toyota was awarded gold twice, followed by Audi, Renault, and Opel with one gold award each. It was Nissan, with five gold awards, which came out tops in the Light Commercial vehicle category, followed by Toyota (4) and Volkswagen (2).

SAVRALA focuses on the road ahead The journey travelled and the road ahead were the key themes of the recent SAVRALA AGM held on 20 October at the Johannesburg Country Club in Auckland Park, which saw former Public Protector Adv. Thuli Madonsela deliver a keynote address.
T
he AGM was preceded by an equally enthusiastic members’ meeting at which General Manager Sandile Ntseoane highlighted key deliverables of the Car Rental Section to guests and members. In his welcoming address, Sandile appraised members on industry developments, rental statistics, the status of the various sub-committee initiatives, and the organisation’s key focus areas, which include: • Driver/Renter Behaviour • B-BBEE • Traffic Fine Redirection / AARTO • Vehicle Licence Renewal • Card Rules Leasing Chairperson Theshnee Sinan gave an update on key leasing statistics and initiatives. Theshnee said the key objectives that the Leasing Section had set itself at the beginning of the term had been achieved, with further focus in future being given to: •Re-establishing the leasing portfolio within SAVRALA •Co-developing the value proposition of the Leasing section •Achieve representation from all significant leasing companies The Annual Report and Financial Statements were presented by the President Winston Guriah. Difficult economic conditions and funding pressures made 2017 yet another challenging year for SAVRALA and its members. Despite the difficult environment, SAVRALA increased its core membership and continued to record strong business performance, ending 2017 in a healthy financial position. In his Presidential Report, Winston thanked various people, committees and members that had contributed to SAVRALA’s success over the past year.

He also shared some of the highlights of his year in office - a year during which he considered it an honour and a pleasure to have served as SAVRALA’s President. SAVRALA is a fantastic organisation of which he and those involved with SAVRALA should be extremely proud, the outgoing president said. In his closing remarks, the President paid tribute to NEC colleagues for their support during the year. Special thanks were also extended to members that were stepping down from their respective positions. AGM SAVRALA’s annual election of auditors and new leadership was conducted by the secretariat and Members. Alchemy were reappointed as auditors for the current year. The outcome of the elections presented the new NEC as per below table:
AGM Keynote Address Advocate Thuli Madonsela delivered a post-AGM keynote address under the theme, ““The role of our industry to help build a better SA.” In her address, Adv. Madonsela, encouraged members to transition to a society that puts constitutional interests first, avoid anything that compromises the interest of SA or the collective, and to take deliberate measures to level the playing field. She said: “Helping humanity is helping yourself.” To highlight her message, Madonsela related a story of a boat in perilous waters sinking with four men on board. Of the four, two were next to the crack and battling to close the holes where water was seeping out, while the other two were just watching. When asked why they didn’t help, they said because ‘the crack is not on our side’. We are all in the same boat she said. “It’s a question of who will sink first.”

She pointed to creeping signs of autocracy from authorities; social injustice; the impact of globalisation and how it affects the poor; disruptive technologies, and the response of the disempowered. “How should we respond?” Madonsela asked. She suggested two responses: The first was that a leader acknowledges the shifting environment, repositions, and finds collateral value. The second response was that every problem is turned into a challenge, and means are sought to resolve the problem. She cited a book entitled, “Who Moved My Cheese” by Spencer Johnson, and encouraged SAVRALA members to be the cheesemakers. She further asked: “What do we have in our possessions and positions that can help us intervene and change the course of history?” “Our glimmer of hope,” she said, “lies in the National Development Plan, which indicates what we are trying to build. To live harmoniously, we must grow our economy, then redistribute and reduce inequalities. We need ethical leaders, who are purposedriven and understand the impact of their actions, and leaders who are committed to serve the collective public good.”

FLEET FOCUS
Matching needs to solutions With the fleet sector of the passenger car market remaining buoyant through tough economical times, manufacturers are realising the importance of this sector in aiding to maintain a sustainable business model. We spoke to Dawid van der Merwe, Fleet Operations Manager of Ford Motor Company South Africa
F
ord Motor Company South Africa’s fleet business has grown substantially during the last few years. YTD September, saw their average fleet business accounts make up approximately 35% of all their sales. “The biggest challenges facing fleet managers and buyers today is managing the total cost of ownership (TCO) during the lifecycle of the vehicle. “ said van der Merwe. He added that developing and managing a robust fleet management programme that will capture all elements of managing a fleet, is critical and, if done accurately, will greatly assist future buying decisions. There is a wide variety of transport solutions available to a fleet buyer, and selecting the one that best suits your specific business needs is no easy task. It is critical to clearly define your fleet application needs and then to match your needs to the best solution or offer available.

FLEET
Dawid van der Merwe
Van der Merwe commented that the current business environment is tough and changing quicker than we think, while cost pressures on the fleet owner are certainly one of the biggest challenges. Smart mobility is drawing a lot of attention, which is directly linked to finding ways to work your assets harder and smarter. There will always be a need to move goods and people around. It is just the way we do it that needs to be done smarter. On the change in ownership models van der Merwe said that there is definitely a lot more focus in the market evaluating the cost/benefit scenario of owning an asset versus leasing. It is all about how fleets would like to manage the risk factor - typically, the companies that like to reduce the capital expenditure shift towards leasing models. An added benefit of this is that the leasing company then also takes up the risk of disposing of the assets at the end of the term.
There are a number of new entrants in the leasing environment, indicating an ongoing demand for such services, while strong competition in the leasing environment also ensures product offerings remain very competitive. “My view is that the leasing option will continue to gain momentum in the market, as leasing companies continually drive to offer more innovative products to match individual company’s needs. In some cases, owning might be the better option, but in a cash-strapped business environment, the leasing route will gain more market share,” said van der Merwe Although many businesses have gone, and still are going, through tough economic difficulties, a lot of effort has gone into improving their business models to survive. “My view, is that in South Africa we still have a long way to go in order to improve our operational efficiencies, and that includes maximising the utilisation of assets such as a fleet of vehicles. Businesses need to adapt very quickly and efficiently to the changing business environment in South Africa. Only the fittest and strongest will survive,” said van der Merwe
Ford is an innovative company that is continually looking towards the future by researching and investing in solutions to service the changing face of mobility. Van der Merwe predicts that we can expect a very different mobility landscape in the next five to ten years. Ford South Africa has a dedicated team that interact directly with their fleet customers. The fleet team’s main objective is to add value to the fleet customers and become their ‘go-to’ person. Ford strives to keep their fleet customers well informed with regular communication and, most importantly, address any issues quickly and effectively. “Marketing and selling to fleet customers is a long-term project and, by doing it correctly, you develop strong and sound business relationships that will last a long time,” said van der Merwe In conclusion, van der Merwe commented that Ford does not offer specific servicing and aftersales solutions for fleets. The Ford dealer network is an integral part and of vital importance to the success of the Ford brand in South Africa, and all their aftersales support is channelled through the dealer network.

Velar sets the pace The much-anticipated fourth member of the Range Rover family has arrived – a midsized, five-seat, luxury SUV that aims at delivering superior levels of refinement, modernity and technology. Wynter Murdoch reports
I
n much the same way as Land Rover’s Range Rover Evoque captured consumer attention following its introduction to South Africa in 2011, so too is the just-released Velar likely to prove a hit in the sales charts. The all-wheel drive model – which slots between its smaller sibling and the larger and pricier Range Rover Sport – offers plenty of fashion appeal without deviating too far from the allterrain path beaten by generations of its luxuriously appointed, safari-grade forerunners. Like them, the Velar is eminently offroad capable – though Land Rover’s prediction is that very few buyers are likely to take the vehicle into the bush; a little gravel road driving and pavement parking forming the boundaries of most projected, adventure-related activities. In the eyes of many, the vehicle represents one of the most effectively styled SUVs yet to be produced. While some of its artistically sculptured lines

Drag coefficient measures 0,32 – the lowest achieved by any Land Rover – helped by door handles that retract into the bodywork when the vehicle is on the move. Equally, headlight clusters are among the slimmest yet seen on an SUV – yet they house the latest and brightest in LED technology. “Modernity, elegance and glamour, underpinned by strength, solidity and a fantastic presence,” is the way chief designer Gerry McGovern describes the Velar’s look, adding that tailored technology and innovation have been combined to create a vehicle that the company hopes will resonate on an emotional level with consumers. In this sense the Velar could be said to have been styled to capitalise on the allure created by the Evoque, a model

The centre piece of the cabin is the infotainment system – dubbed the Touch Pro Duo – which features two 10-inch high-definition touch screens that have been integrated seamlessly into the dashboard behind hidden-untillit surfaces.
During the launch I was impressed by the punch offered by the 177kW diesel engine and the smoothness of the supercharged V6, the latter’s ability to offer kick-in-the-back acceleration – accompanied by a sonorous sounding exhaust note – adding appeal.
The upper screen houses navigation, audio and communication functions while the lower unit is used to operate settings for the air-conditioning and the brand’s trademarked Terrain Response chassis and powertrain controls. The system is user friendly and easy to navigate, the intuitive displays working with the cabin’s architecture to add elements of modernity. Steeringwheel-mounted touch controls include a module for managing audio programming and volume via an iPodlike circular interface. Though leather upholstery is invariably mandatory in a Range Rover, the Velar offers as an alternative sustainable, premium textile seat material. The cloth – manufactured in Dapple Grey – has been developed in conjunction with Danish company Kvadrat, said to be Europe’s leading manufacturer of high-quality designer textiles, and is complemented by suede inserts in Ebony or Light Oyster. Similarly, wading depth drops from 650mm to 600mm for vehicles with coil springs only. Traction technologies across the range include Terrain Response 2 and All Terrain Progress Control. X marks the spot Nissan was one of the pioneers of the crossover segment, and continually evolves its range to the needs of its customers with versatile vehicles that allow drivers to break free of the city limits whenever they want. Reuben van Niekerk reports
F
or Nissan, the X-Trail is a volume seller and a model that helps to build their brand, so it makes sense that they have chosen this model to showcase their technology under the banner Nissan Intelligent Mobility The updated X-Trail is a perfect example of Nissan’s approach to developing crossover vehicles with exceptional qualities that give the ability to broaden horizons, and with the peace of mind that comes with knowing there is an array of innovative Nissan Intelligent Mobility features to keep occupants safe. The X-Trail has the look and feel of a premium SUV, but it also has the technology to tackle any on- or offroad adventure. Thanks to the option of seven seats, nobody needs to miss out on the fun. The new X-Trail is equipped with a full complement of Nissan Intelligent Mobility solutions including Blind Spot Intervention, Lane Intervention, Cross Traffic Alert, Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Auto headlights and Around View Monitor.
The rear is updated with LED boomerang tail-lights, while the rear bumper has been harmonised to match the stunning new face of the X-Trail.
The interior offers cutting-edge technology, modern design, superb safety, premium features and space for the whole family. The black leather trim has been enhanced and now features white stitching, while the steering wheel is D-shaped. The centre console and lid have also been improved. The exterior design has been enhanced with new 17-inch and 19inch alloys as well as new exterior

Petrol engine fans have a choice of two models: Either a 2,5 litre normally aspirated power plant that produces 126kW at 6000 revs/min and 223Nm at 4000 revs/min, or a 2,0 litre direct injection normally aspirated model that produces 106 kW at 6000 revs/min and 200Nm at 4 400 revs/min.

In Auto mode, which is activated by default, constant monitoring of the throttle position, engine speed and torque distribution, to anticipate wheel spin, dictates when the system seamlessly distributes torque between the front and rear axles as needed.
Nissan has a variety of vehicles on offer in the crossover segment. The Juke remains a firm favourite for those looking for a small SUV, while the Qashqai has established itself as the go-to mid-sized crossover for adventurous types starting a family.
The X-Trail has made its mark over the years with buyers looking for a large, premium crossover that offers comfort, versatility and smart technology, while also being great value for money. But if you are in the market for the ultimate first-class crossover that oozes executive charm while conquering anything in its path, Nissan has the segment covered, as the new Patrol will be launched soon. The compact SUV segment is the biggest in the South African market at 12 per cent, and with the X-Trail being the only seven-seater in the Compact SUV segment, it makes a lot of sense for bigger families. The X-Trail is set to play an important role in Nissan’s plans of replicating their light commercial vehicle success in the passenger-car market and I think they are on the right path.

More fizz and plenty of zip! Ford’s Fiesta ST200 is a proper driver’s car – a hot hatch made all the more rewarding to drive thanks to extra power and tweaks to gearbox, steering and underpinnings. Wynter Murdoch reports
W
hile Ford’s Fiesta ST has established itself as a popular hot hatch – a rival to Volkswagen’s Polo GTI and Renault’s Clio RS – its lack of power has tended to count against it in the performance stakes. Ford has sought to remedy the problem by introducing a 200 horsepower (149kW) version of the model, dubbed the ST200 and available only in an interesting Storm Grey paint colour to distinguish it from standard, 134kW, ST counterparts. In addition to the extra power, the new variant benefits from a 50Nm increase in torque, a small gearbox tweak, alterations to the steering system and damper settings, as well as being equipped with a reprogrammed ESP unit that allows more freedom for the driver. In its new configuration, the engine bursts with power, an overboost function upping
18
FLEET
output to 160kW and 320Nm for 20-second bursts – a feature particularly handy when overtaking – with the turbocharger offering near instantaneous response to any hint of pressure on the accelerator pedal. Additionally, the manual, six-speed gearshift rivals the best in the business for its short throw, while the gruff-sounding exhaust note helps to amplify the vehicle’s sporty countenance. From the moment you sit behind the steering wheel, you get the feeling that this is a car which enjoys being driven; it possesses all the zip you’ll find in the standard car, but with a little extra fizz. Ford quotes the vehicle’s zero to 100km/h time at 6,7 seconds – 0,2 seconds faster than the time achieved by the stock version. Though the difference may not appear that significant, it’s palpable – giving the ST the edge it needs to better match the performance credentials of rivals. Equally, on roads that twist and turn the upgrades to suspension are
noticeable. Handling feels sharper while traction limits appear to have stretched. Electrically assisted steering is precise, with good feedback through the column attributable to a specially modified knuckle in the linkage system and a shorter steering arm. Other improvements include enhanced torque vectoring control, three-mode electronic stability control, revised damper settings front and rear, as well as a refashioned rear twist-beam axle design, while the car’s centre of gravity is said to be 15mm lower than that of the standard model’s. The braking system features a larger tandem brake master cylinder for more consistent stopping power. Though firmly sprung, the ST200 retains plenty of suppleness in its ride, helping to make the car comfortable on long journeys. Further, the cabin has received a makeover that’s in keeping with the vehicle’s sporty disposition.

Though unlikely to be a top choice for the fleet market, the benefits associated with the ST200’s upgrades make the vehicle suitable for a variety of business applications – and the model is expected to maintain a high resale value. Rough with the smooth Depreciation projections aside, you’ll find little wrong with Mercedes-Benz’s sumptuous new E-Class Coupé
M
ercedes-Benz’s new E-Class Coupé is alluringly styled and packed with useful technology and features. In E400 guise it is powered by a turbocharged, 3,0-litre, V6 that produces 245kW and 480Nm, returning a claimed fuel consumption figure of 8,4 litres/100km in the combined cycle. So, while the car not only looks good, it is perceived as economical to drive (for a luxury tourer) and offers the security of the MercedesBenz badge – all factors that should endear it to well-heeled consumers, no? Surprising as it may seem, the vehicle is unlikely to turn out to be a blue chip asset. From a value for money perspective, the E400 Coupé is projected to be worth just 37,4% of its retail price four years after its acquisition, according to figures supplied to

Fleet by ABSA’s Vehicle and Asset Finance division. That means the model, which costs R1 0299 366 new, is expected to sell for just R386 000 if it is traded in 2021, having depreciated in value by around 62,9% over the 48-month period. Though most vehicles lose value once they move off a showroom floor, the figure represents a substantial drop for a derivative that wears the three-pointed star – especially one which offers a substantial number of features perceived to be desirable by the consumer market. So, is there anything wrong with the car? Not much, by my reckoning. First off, the model is larger than its predecessor. The new W213generation E-Class platform has grown by 123mm in length, 74mm in width and 33mm in height. In
addition, the wheelbase has been stretched by 113mm – which, from a cabin perspective, frees up more space for front and rear passengers – while the chassis sits 15mm lower to the ground than that of the sedan version. The drivetrain incorporates a ninespeed automatic gearbox and offers a choice of five driving modes – Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual and Eco. The shift response of the transmission, even in Sport mode, remains silky rather than snappy, though the engine’s note tends to become a little raucous in the upper regions of the rev range. From this you will glean that the vehicle tends to prefer the sedate approach, but even so it is no slouch on the road, Mercedes claiming a zero to 100km/h time of 5,3 seconds and a top speed electronically

Meticulous tuning of the suspension components and steering system has resulted in exceptional ride comfort, along with precise and agile handling characteristics. The Transit features the latest Electronic Stability Program technology with Torque Vectoring Control for enhanced traction and stability. The Transit achieved a maximum fivestar safety rating from independent vehicle safety organisation Euro NCAP. To maximise occupant protection, the Transit features an optimised body structure which features ultra-highstrength Boron steel. In total, over 40 per cent of the body is made from high-strength or ultra-high-strength steels, resulting in a strong and light body which is designed to offer high levels of crash protection. The Transit also features an enhanced restraint system which now gives customers the option of specifying a passenger airbag for front seat occupants, in addition to the standard fitment driver airbag. As on Ford’s latest passenger cars, a non-axial stroking steering column is also fitted, to help reduce loads on the occupant’s head and chest in the event of a high speed frontal impact. Designers of the Transit were tasked with ensuring the vehicle could deliver low cost-of-ownership and durability. As a result they looked to the 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine to offer low fuel consumption while still delivering the required performance levels. The 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi engine is offered in three variations. The 74kW model offers 310Nm of torque from just 1 300revs/min, the 92kW version offers 350Nm at 1450revs/min while the high-powered 114kW version offers 385Nm at 1 600rpm.

Cutting Edge Thinking in Cancer Treatment meets Car Making After being diagnosed with cancer, Mike Butler was fascinated by the process through which patients were treated – but saw an opportunity to introduce practices from the car manufacturing facility, where he works, so that it might run more smoothly.
W
orking together with his colleagues, at the Ford assembly plant, in Cologne, in Germany, quality director Butler and the team researched and proposed changes that are now being implemented as part of what is expected to become Europe’s biggest dedicated cancer unit. And this has since developed into a two-way flow of ideas, as hospital staff at the renowned Centre for Integrated Oncology (CIO) at the University of Cologne, one of the leading cancer centres in Germany, are bringing their experience of working with big data to bear on Ford research into future vehicles. “I spent five years in treatment rooms and thought about how I could make life easier for patients,” said Butler, who is now in remission from colon cancer. “There was a real lightbulb moment when I realised that many of the systems that ensure car plants run smoothly could be applied to the hospital. Now there is an ideas exchange that is benefitting patients today, and could also help the way we move tomorrow. The more we work together the more synergies we find between our work at Ford and the challenges faced in cancer research.” It was back in 2008 that medical staff were first shown the advanced technologies and efficient processes that have enabled the Ford Fiesta Cologne plant to become one of the world’s most efficient vehicle production plants. A team of 10 to 15 Ford engineers met with hospital administrators as well as patients, nurses, doctors, and the collaboration blossomed from there. Designed to ensure treatment is less stressful and faster, coloured lines on walls and floors make it easier for staff, patients and visitors to find their way around; and large screens will

help make communication between key medical employees easier. The team also proposed flexible rooms with removable dividers rather than rigid wards and fixed nursing stations. At the existing facility, all of this has already contributed to a 30 per cent improvement in patient flow. Meanwhile, the medical teams at the hospital are advising Ford on the processes they use to conceive and develop completely different approaches to tackling cancer. The company is now applying this “outside the box” thinking in relation to future vehicles and new technologies.
“Medicine is an ever-changing science where small changes have a huge impact on the lives of patients,” said Prof Dr Michael Hallek, the director of the CIO – that has been repeatedly honoured by German Cancer Aid as the top oncological centre. “With Ford’s help, we are making huge improvements that will benefit the lives and treatment of future patients for years to come. And hopefully, some of our methods of doing things will help Ford to develop what mobility might look like in the future.” Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/ lnIBA1QXBiw
