CLUB D’ART . LONG BEACH MUSEUM OF ART . THE ART EXCHANGE

FOREWORD

Welcome, from Ron Nelson, The Art Exchange Board Member, principal for gallery curation, and art vision. The Club d’Art of Long Beach City College presents a multi-faceted collection of art created by its talented graduating class. From Within embraces individuality and the personal pursuit of artistic expression. Brian Doan, LBCC professor and leader of Club d’Art is undeniably devoted to each of his students, he has worked diligently to provide the artists at LBCC with the necessary space that From Within showcases. From Within displays diversity and explores multiple mediums including sculpture, photography, jewelry making, mixed-media, and illustration. Each artist and each piece of art exemplifies the talent and skills that these artists have pursued in their craft. The newly renovated Art Exchange gallery is a wondrous exhibition space for artists to showcase their work professionally. The Art Exchange gallery and its adjacent Learning Center and artist studios provide Long Beach and our communities the opportunity to share, to create, and to explore art. Together with ARTX and LBCC’s Club d’Art, we hope this exhibit provides unique inspiration to all who enter the gallery space. A warm thanks to The Art Exchange Board of Directors who have built and endlessly supported the growth of this community art center. Much gratitude as well to Carin Jacobs and Karen Steffani for their contribution on the curation team. And most graciously, congratulations to Club d’Art of Long Beach City College and program leader, Brian Doan, for a beautifully orchestrated exhibit! RONALD C. NELSON EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR LONG BEACH MUSEUM OF ART

The Art Exchange is proud to present, From Within, a multifaceted exhibition curated in collaboration with Brian Doan, of Long Beach City College, and Ron Nelson, of Long Beach Museum of Art. This collaboration comes at an exciting time for The Art Exchange, we are delighted to host a talented line-up of artists from LBCC, comprised of one of the largest art departments in the California Community College system. Our thanks to each of the participating artists who have produced quality work to share with our Long Beach community. The mission of The Art Exchange is to be a leading art center that inspires a range of people by utilizing our multi-purpose campus to foster a lifelong relationship to art. Our objective is to establish and sustain a new generation of artists and an appreciation of art. This exhibit, in conjunction with Long Beach City College, further enhances our goal to highlight the talented artists that our city fosters and to share art with all of our communities. Many thanks to our ever supportive Board of Directors—Lia Brownell, Tom Corcoran, Rebecca Collins, Carin Jacobs, Ronald Nelson, Mathew Rabin, Dawn Radue, and Steve Pakiz. Appreciation also to our participating donors and ARTX Members. And lastly, a very special nod to Seija Rohkea and her wonderful installation team, as well as to our special group of volunteers.

AFTERWORD

From Within is a dream come true for students and artists who have trained at the Visual and Media Arts Department of Long Beach City College. Their work has been guided and nominated by mentors and art professors, selected by the most respected curator and art director at The Long Beach Museum of Art, and is now displayed and celebrated in this new prestigious art space in historic downtown Long Beach. I want to congratulate everyone represented here. Your art came from passion, intuition, and hard work despite the many difficulties you faced. After almost a decade as art educator and club advisor at LBCC, I look at the work collected here and I’m reminded how vital art-making is to our way of life and our communal spirit. Strong sentiment, yes, but true. I hope From Within remains in your heart as it will in mine. ____ This show and the publication you hold in your hand is a milestone for art at Long Beach City College. It would not have materialized without the help of many people: Ron Nelson, it’s my pleasure to work with you. Thank you for your insight, passion and belief in this new generation of artists in our diverse and active community. Jay Hong and your wonderful Art Exchange colleagues Karen Steffani, Steve Pakiz, Carin Jacobs and the entire Board of Trustees, my deepest thanks. Sejia Rohkea and Laurie Webb from the Long Beach Museum team, thank you for your extensive preparation, communication, and the installation of the artwork. To my LBCC colleagues Adam Teraoka, Ann Mitchell, Bob Hersh, Carolyn Castano, Chris Chinn, Coleen Sterritt, Christian Ward, Gerardo Monterrubio, Ken Corral, Kristin Beeler, Linda King, Mike Neal, Morgan Barnard, Sandra Low, Stas Orlovski, Trevor Norris, Tyler Ferreira, Neil France and Jeff Smeding; to my friends and fellow artists Uudam Tran Nguyen and Bich Pham who helped with the printing & shipping process in Vietnam; to the ASB staff, the Foundation, and the Fine Art Associates at LBCC—thank you for your generous support and commitment to our students’ success. To the core team of Club d’Art, who have been working tirelessly for this project, you have my deepest respect and gratitude. You are my dream team. Thank you so much! Lastly, on behalf of the Visual and Media Art Department of LBCC, we wish all the artists of From Within the brightest future imaginable. BRIAN DOAN PROFESSOR OF ART & PHOTOGRAPHY ADVISOR, CLUB D’ART

CLUB D’ART

Club d’Art is a student organization at Long Beach City College whose mission is to give young artists of all disciplines a platform where they can represent themselves and contribute to the art scene. Club d’Art was founded in the 1990s by a group of dedicated students who decided that campus life would be better with an art gallery. They conducted research, interviewed higher institutions, and succeeded in petitioning the administration. On September 21, 1993, the first exhibition of student drawings was unveiled. More than two decades later, we are proud to follow in our founders’ humble footsteps to present student artwork from the widely respected and awardwinning LBCC Visual & Media Arts Department. To be an artist is respectable no matter one’s origins, and the Club d’Art members hope to encourage our city to believe in the positive influence of art and self-expression, and that anything is possible.

LONG BEACH MUSEUM OF ART

The Long Beach Museum of Art’s mission has always been to inspire community learning and artistic spirit through a diverse range of art exhibitions and programs. Founded in 1950 as a municipal art center for the city in the historic Anderson House on Ocean Boulevard, LBMA joined the American Alliance of Museums in 1977. In 2000, the Museum underwent a complete restoration and construction of a twostory exhibition pavilion. In the 1950s soon after their establishment, they began acquiring their permanent collection, which today houses over 3,200 works encompassing 300 years of American and European art in all forms and media. This gem of a collection is the subject of conservation and research as well as compelling exhibitions which educate the public on the artworks’ historical backgrounds, opening conversations and reinterpreting meanings. Dedicated to their mission of fostering community learning, the Museum also provides engaging, low-cost educational programs for both children and adults that promote free self-expression and creativity.

THE ART EXCHANGE

When Long Beach leaders noticed in the late 1990’s that the East Village was naturally forming into an arts district they had a vision to enhance it with its own community arts center, the Art Exchange project was born. After much research and planning, the city moved forward with the renovation of a small group of buildings on the corner of East 3rd and Elm Street, and what we have today is a modern, state-of-the-art community space which includes live-in artist studios, classrooms, and gallery space. The mission of the Art Exchange is to provide a place where creative ideas can flow, where local artists can showcase and sell their work, and where art education programs can enrich the development of K-12 students. Long Beach is so vibrant in the arts and culture, having a space where the community can come together to foster creative growth and success brings even more strength to our city.
