I CYBER COLLEGE ACADEMIC BUILDING FOR ARCHITECTURE Instructor: Daqing Han, handaqing@cumt.edu.cn Type: Academic, Individual work Period: 4th year, 1st semester Location: Shenzhen, China

For a long time, architecture in university is regarded as a "practical" major due to its various classical courses, including hand drawing, model making, historical buildings' researching and many other creative works. However, with the technology's developing and the popularization of PC, more and more architecture students in China rely too much on computer's assistant. Manual model seems to be useless compared with 3D modeling, hand drawing is unefficient and slower than computer drawing. We all benefit from new technology indeed, but something involved architecture accomplishment we should never abandon. Was it possible to create a college where we can better combine the new and the old teaching mechanism togehter? That's what Cyber College tries to do. The Cyber College is located at Nanshan dist, Shenzhen, Guangdong province. Surrounded by many other universities and science park, the college has many potential oppotunities for avant teaching method. N

The computer technology originated in human logic and has grown into a specific filed during the decades. Is it possible to make computer logic feed back the thinking model of other filds? Or the structure of information technology can greatly inspire other kinds if people? It is interesting to deconstructe and restructure topology logic and find whether it can be enlightening to architecture. HUB HUB

LOGICAL STRUCTURE The layout of the Cyber College refers to both computer hardware logic and topology. Four main room are placed at each corner as CPU, and four grades are set anticlockwise while there have some relevant components between each room. Grade 2&3 share the basic classroom, and grade 3&4 share the model room. The global connection let people from any room communicate with visitors through the Switch easily. There are also local connections between each two CPU, which students can co-operate more efficiently with adjacent grades through them.

TEACHING MECHANISM Inspired from the classical scheduel of Bauhaus, Cyber College has another optimized teaching mechanism: Since the Cyber College mainly services advanced students, the baisc courses, including structure, architecture history, study of form and materials are keeped but much more simplified. After finishing these courses, students are provided some latest technology training, most are about computer technology and machinery, to assist their further study: core design. Visitors and students from other places are allowed to attend part of their courses through lectures and seminars. This kind of communication runs through their 4 years.

II FREE MASSING HOUSE FORM RESEARCH IN RANDOM PLACE Instructor: Tao Lin, lintao23@126.com Type: Research, Individual work Period: 4th year, 2nd semester Location: Random

House designing is always enlightening and interesting due to its smaller mass and relatively less limits. But most time we just arrange the layout according to basic needs and use those all-purpose appearance indiscriminately. Thus I tried to explore different method to form space: stacking several basic geometric language and list results with utility value, then combine these results according to specific needs.

Because the research's specific backgrand, this building is "siteless" and can be placed anywhere in a city. Normally it would be optimized on a narow space where there are buildings at both side. Not like other house designed with a specific plan, the "free massing" building provides a basic logic and makes the building influenced by local enviroment and "grow" itself.

The main idea "free massing" mainly comes from "free plan" by Le Corbusier, but also inspired by many other successful cases. By deconstructing and restructuring those space and structure, I eventually get two different result. The first level of the building would provide a activity area for neighborhood or a walk-through corridor to another street according needs, other levels provide some basic functions such as working and living.

RESULT 1 AXONOMETRIC DRAWING

RESULT 1 GENERATING MASSING The whole building consists of three basic mass, each has a specific section. It combines several same box and truss, but with different compound mode, they generated a new form.

PLANTFORM

CONCEPT Inspired by the barkentine in Middle Ages, the house has some similar space: upper space are designed for single functions, while bottom space are for multiple, group activities.

TRANSPORT

PROGRAM This result mainly aims at young people who need public space for communication and private space for personal work as well. The first level of the building would provide a activity area for neighborhood or a walk-through corridor to another street according needs, other levels provide some basic functions such as working and living.

RESULT 2 SECTION

ARCHITECTURE DESIGN Inspired by "N A House" by SOU FUJIMOTO, I tried to explore another resule. As FUJIMOTO's concept, the house would appear like a tree. People live on it, see their companions, talk to them across different levels... Just like our ancestor dwelling on trees. The house would provide such a special experience and bring back the ancient memories. I have another understanding against this concept: people could communicate with others inside a building without walking around, that can be a advantage while they are running some teamwork. The different living experience could also change their mood and influence their mode of thinking.

III MARSPUNK MEGA-STRUCTURE AT MARS COLONIZATION Instructor: Siqi Yang, 419510010@qq.com Type: Evolo Competition, Individual work Period: 4th year, 1st semester Location: Mars

COLONIZATION

Era progressed, social developed, but life on the Earth is still hard for some people, especially for the refugees. This problem threaten our world's stability for thousands of years but still has not been solved. Where to resettle these homeless people who were drived from their motherland by complex relation of religions, politics, poverty and disaster? Hungary? Sweden? Even Germany is running out of capacity these days. Any land on earth seems unsuitable. What if we look for another planet with more room and resources, far away from conflicts and wars, and build up a new sociaty for these multiculture mankind?

DISASTERS:

ADVANTAGES:

POLITICS RELIGIOUS POVERTY DISEASE TERRORISM .....

Humans are always facinated by the idea of interplanetary colonization, not only did we produce tons of sci-fi works but also conduct countless scientific researches. Mars, witch has lots favorable conditions (soil, mineral, potential water source), becomes the most popular for interplanetary colonization in Solar system. From private company's plan Mars One, to the government organization NASA, people all started their practical action.

RESEARCH DATAS

According to ralevent researches, Mars Environment Terraforming (heat the atmosphere and produce enough oxygen for breathing) is possible but time-consuming. During this one thousand years, immigrants could only be crowded in space capsule like canned fish, with a repressing, low-efficient working environment and the risk of homesickness. How can they build up a city rather than interplanetary redugees' camps? Just like Jamestown, the first settlement established in North Amercia in 1607. A special arbor in south Africa named Artocarpus incisa (Thunb.) L. also inspires me. The trees can store large amount of organic material and water to survive the dry season. Local animals and people regard them as their vital resource. Biosphere II, the third inspiration, also provides a possibly method. By covering the whole city with a huge dome and creating an semi-closed ecosystem, people can well arrange the micro climate inside. The dome can also prevent citizens from critical tempreture and harmful cosmic rays.

CARBON CYCLE Same as the oxygen element, carbon atom comes from dioxide and join the RWGS reaction. After turning into CO molecule, they are mixed with H2 and react to the final production C2H4 , which is the vital material for fuel and plastic industry.

ELECTROLYSIS REACTOR 2H2O →2H2+ O2

STRUCTURE & PIPE Pipes inside are of two different use: transporting cold water to the nuclear reactor to cool it down or transporting steam up to the electrolysis device. The composite metal web strengthen tower structure. It also helps cool the water down. GENERATOR TURBINE

RWGS REACTOR Where the Reverse Water Gas Shift takes place. The reaction material, oxygen and carbon dioxide are transport through the pipe connected with the central gas pot. Because of the Iron Base Catalyst inside, the whole reaction goes highly efficiently. C2H4

Using the power of steam for electricity generation. Although the output is much smaller than nuclear reaction, it can support the water cycle runs independently in case of emergency. NUCLEAR REACTOR Installed at bottom of the tower, this nuclear reactor provides all energ y use, from the electrolysis reaction to all machines' transmission. It consume cold water and discharge hot steam.

SECTION OF THE STAR PORT & REACTOR GROUP WATER CYCLE The reaction group consumes most waste heat of steam produced by nuclear coolant and generates cold water. These water cooling down the nuclear reactor and become hot steam again. Because the principle of thermal convection, the whole system runs highly efficiently.

MICRO-CLIMATE WITHOUT THE TOWER In this semi-sealed biome, hot airflow tend to rise and gather at the top of the dome. And as the density of O2 is smaller than CO2, hot fresh air tend to gather at top while most colonialists at lower part don't have enough O2 for breath, tempreture also remain low level.

NATURAL THERMAL CONVECTION MICRO-CLIMATE WITH THE TOWER The huge fan inside the star port can distinctly promote the convection of airflow, force hot air with high concentration O2 go down to residentail area and keep the colonization's warmth.

INTERVENED THERMAL CONVECTION As a mega-structure in colonization, the tower provides not only life support but other functions for various activities. Cargo pilots have specific space for resting, labors are also provided comfortable shelters inside this huge machines. Freshwater, food and other necessaries are all storaged in case. Military force, emergency treat and other basic facilities are all included. This mega-structure will keep operating as long as the colonization exits, until human finish the Mars Environment Terraforming project.

Located at the southen part of Kunming City, Guandu Ancient Town was once the most prosperous market district in China during the Tang and Song Dynasties. There was once a grand festival called Market Festival in the ancient town, which was a traditional social event that men, women, and children all gathered together for shopping and celebrating. People dressed in colorful ethnic costumes, praying and dancing around the central ancient building, Jinggang Pagoda. Guandu Ancient Town was always full of flowers, music, and dances on the day of the festival. Just like many other ancient town in China, Guandu Ancient Town guadually lost in the years. Local young people all move toward big cities, left elders withering with this old town. There is no more flowers or singing around the Jinggang Pagoda. Local goverment already thied to protect those ancient buildings, but that's not enough. Only with the protection of culture heritage, the injection of new blood and activate this district, there will be hope and the town will rise again.

The Jinggang Pagoda is at center or the town, surrounded by other old buildings like temples, towers and folk houses. Many old people like stay there, but without a indoor enviroment, their daily activities greatly depend on weather.

CONCLUSION For a long time, the Guandu Ancient Town was a large settlement for several minorities. Different from the biggest nation Han, these dwellers have their special daily schedule: their wake-up time is greatly influenced by solar terms, usually they eat breakfast very late and hardly have lunch, they work a whole day and then have their dinner... These habits still influence their social activities today, that's why they have such a different result than visitor groups, which mainly consists of tourists from Kunming and many other surrounding cities. Another big contradiction between two kinds of people is their different needs. Local people still want some place to exchange their clothes, food, handicrafts and other goods, but with the rapid construction in this city, there is no more "free market" around this town. They have to adapt the modern lifestyle: buy basic supplies in supermarket. They used to sing and dance at the central area of the town around the pagoda, but with the establish of the commercial streets, there is no more room for folk activities. These big changes greatly reduced their happiness while their familiar traditions gradually pass away, and thats what this project tried to focus on: bring some space back for folk activities.

V PHAROS ARTSTATION RECONFIGURATION OF THE BOILER HOUSE Instructor: Chengping Ma Type: Academic, Individual work Period: 3rd year, 2nd semester Location: Xuzhou, China

In the late 1970s, China University of Mining Technology established its new campus in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province, which is known as Wenchang campus. A boiler house was built together with many other school facilities in Wenchanag. Located at northwest of the central mountain, the boiler house converted huge amount of coal into heat, providing steam and boiling water to surrounding buildings and apartments for the last century. The city developed its heating system from local divided heating to district heating in 1990s. Many boiler houses were abandoned and this one in Wenchang was no exception. Machines stoped, fire extinguished, labors also lefted this old building alone.

As an important cultural heritage in this area, the boiler house survived the demolition and most parts are well preserved. People now also believe the memory of last generation should not be forgot. ACADEMIC BUILDINGS
