Raging against

Letting go is not always so easy… I WAS TALKING TO TODD FIELDS this morning—the guy on the cover. He was telling me about how running on trails is what he loves to do. It’s the running itself, the being in the great out there, the adventure…all of it. He looked down at his leg and said something about his knee. Then he told a story about how his knee had swollen up like a softball while he was running the Leadville 100 and he hobbled in the last 10 miles to finish under the allotted time…barely. Ouch! It sounded to me like those last 10 miles were more, shall we say, of an opportunity for personal growth than the first 90! (I think there’s metaphor in there somewhere…) It’s hard being an aging weekend (or weekday) warrior. Do we rage against and pretend that we have our 30-something-year-old bodies? Do we accept that our parts just don’t bounce back like we want them to? The thing is that we like being active. Maybe the hardest part is dealing with our minds, not our bodies. I mean, our bodies are going to do their thing whether we like it or not. It’s our thoughts that we need to work with. It’s hard to let go…we just want everything to keep working as it once did. Damn it! So, let’s say we find a way to not just despair and collapse in front of the TV, and we realize that we have to modify what we do and how we do it… kind of, sort of somewhere in the middle. I’m kind of getting there myself. I keep wanting to be active and, probably pushing back a little bit, but I think I’m past the absolute denying and raging against stage. I’m in the letting go stage…not the “oh my, he’s really let himself go,” type of letting go, I hope. More the adapting type of letting go…such as, I haven’t been running because it tends to provoke an episode of Afib, but I’ve been walking on the trails. I’ve even come to truly appreciate the walking. I see more and smell more and hear more. And I don’t want to be discouraging. If you’re 65 and you can crank out a marathon, go for it. And here’s a cool little example close to home for me. Kristin (my better half ) is signed up to start training to be a Pilates instructor. She’ll be close to 60 when she finishes. Her approach is that she likes Pilates and she thinks she could help others enjoy the benefits of it too. She’ll bring her life experience and (alleged) maturity to class. So I’m not sure I landed firmly anywhere, but the main thing that I’m thinking is that we need to let go of whatever image we have for ourselves and just be ready to roll as our bodies and circumstances change. Happy trails to you… Scott

De-cluttering demystified

DE-CLUTTERING CAN BE DAUNTING. Pretend you are moving and ask yourself, “What can I do without?” Choose some of these suggestions to help you de-clutter. • Make a list of places to clear. • Pick one area a day and spend 5 minutes putting 5 things away. • Give away or donate one item a day. • With each donation solicitation, give one box. • Organize clothes to face right. Re-hang facing left. After 6 months, get rid of those not worn. • Find 12 things to donate and 12 things to trash a month. • Mark 4 boxes – trash, give away, keep and relocate. Place each item from a room in one of the boxes. • If you buy 2 items, get rid of 2. • Once organized, purchase necessary storage containers and shelves. Remember “A place for everything and everything in its place.”

Donate your gently used items ONCE YOU HAVE DE-CLUTTERED, what do you do with your discards? Here are suggestions for donating clothing, furniture, toys, household items, books and more. • Schedule a time with Pick Up Please. Foot Health: Seasonal Factors Put The Focus On Feet

W

ell, we’ve made it through the Holidays and welcomed in the New Year! This time of year is one for resolutions and many of us become motivated to take better care of ourselves. The following are our recommendations for caring for your feet during these long winter months. DRY SKIN Our cold Colorado winter air is extremely dry. This, in addition to the indoor heating, can cause major issues with dry skin. To prevent and treat scaly and cracked skin it is best to use a thick moisturizing cream at least twice daily. Avoid harsh soaps and increase your water intake to stay well hydrated. The skin can develop painful cracks that are difficult to heal. If deep fissures develop it is best to see your podiatrist as these can become troublesome and develop bacterial infections.

COLD FEET Do your feet turn into icicles once the temperature drops? As your body adjusts to the cold, it draws more blood to your vital organs, leaving your extremities poorly perfused. If you are outdoors for a long period of time in cold weather watch for skin colour changes and numbness and tingling in your toes. This may be frostnip and can quickly develop into the more serious frostbite. Avoid this by wearing properly fitted water resistant boots and warm socks. And of course use good judgement and get yourself inside if your feet get too cold. INGROWN TOENAILS While it is important to keep your feet properly shod during the winter months, one downside of this is the incidence of ingrown nails. Avoid this painful problem by wearing shoes and boots that fit correctly and have a wider toebox. Toes should never touch the ends of the shoes. When caring for toenails cut and file toenails straight across. Don’t play around with potential ingrown nails as this could lead to an infection. Your podiatrist can help to remove the ingrown toenail safely. SLIPS & FALLS A slip on the ice can easily become a trip to the doctor. Make sure your shoes are stable and that the outer sole is slip resistant. If a dressier shoe is required for work or an event, bring them with you, but wear good stable shoes for your commute. Also, don’t forget to slow down and take smaller steps. A large stride or fast pace can make it harder to keep your balance if you find yourself suddenly on slippery ground. Kate Johnson DPM is a board qualified podiatrist practicing at A STEP AHEAD FOOT & ANKLE CENTER, in Loveland and Fort Collins, along with Michael Burns DPM, Robert Schulte DPM and Chad Knutsen DPM. Currently accepting new patients. Fifty&Better | 15 Dr. Kate also now seeing patients in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

TRAVELERS WHO DON’T get vaccinated before they set off on adventures in developing or rural countries can contract diseases such as typhoid and yellow fever. Vaccines aren’t fool proof, but they do offer good protection. Other diseases, like Measles and polio, which are nearly extinct in the U.S., are common in some other countries, yet quite preventable with proper vaccinations. Make sure you are up to date on basic immunizations before traveling. For a comprehensive list of travel destinations and their associated vaccine requirements and recommendations, visit the Centers for Disease Control’s website at wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/list.

WHEN YOU TAKE A BREAK from the daily grind, you don’t need to take a break from staying fit. Exercising while traveling may be a bit different than participating in your weekly Zumba class or lifting weights at your favorite gym, but there are many ways to maintain fitness when you are traveling. Walking is one of the easiest ways to get cardio exercise when you’re traveling. Opt to go by foot whenever possible. Good old-fashioned push-ups, pull-ups and sit-ups help maintain muscle mass and are great alternatives to pumping iron. If you enjoy yoga, a quiet spot in a park or even your hotel room can be a calming place to practice your poses. Jennifer Applegate, program supervisor and personal trainer with Miramont Lifestyle Fitness, says, “There are many apps available to keep you motivated even when you’re not at the gym. Runtastic will give you voice feedback on your progress, or try iWod for your daily dose of CrossFit. You can even get creative in your hotel room! Use the bed or desk for incline push-ups, or grab your luggage as a makeshift barbell. You can also look for boutique gyms, with drop-in rates, in the area you’re visiting. Ask the concierge at your hotel for recommendations and try something new!”

Fitness on the go

Know before you have to go THE LAST THING YOU WANT when traveling is a bacterial infection that could set you back for several weeks. That’s why it’s important to be extra careful when enjoying food and beverages in other countries where food preparation practices might be less than sanitary. The most common food- and water-borne infections are salmonellosis, E. coli infection and norovirus, but you also can get sick from giardia and even contract hepatitis A when traveling abroad.

To protect yourself from Montezuma’s revenge and other nasty illnesses you don’t want to become part of your vacation memories, take these simple precautions:

1 Drink bottled or canned drinks that

are factory sealed; carbonated beverages are the safest. Always clean off the lip of a can before drinking from it.

2 Use bottled or purified water for

drinking and brushing your teeth.

You can sterilize water by boiling it, filtering it or adding a chemical purifier, like chlorine.

3 Only eat fully cooked food that is

served steaming hot. This includes fruits and vegetables, unless you can wash them in clean water or peel them yourself.

4 Eat and drink only pasteurized dairy products.

Better Balance

Bob Calhoun, PhD Is a Licensed Psychologist and writer in Fort Collins (bob@bobcalhounpsychologist.com)

Living better by letting go...of stuff

CLEARING OUT THE SPACES in which we live and spend the majority of our time might be one of the more important things we do to live a full, positive, and creative second half of life. Letting go of things we don’t need, of which we have too many, or that no longer bring us joy, can reduce stress (which is a good thing for heart health), make our living spaces more enjoyable, and create room for emotional, psychological, and spiritual growth in the precious years we have left to live. Stuff literally and figuratively gets in our way. Unlike my friend Tom, whose garage is spotless and what items are there hang neatly in their proper places on brightly painted pegboards, most of us walk daily through 24 |

Fifty&Better

or by our cluttered living spaces. You know…the closets, bookcases, desks, garage, storage boxes, sheds, and trunks. Whether we are conscious of it or not, the presence of all that stuff is an energy drain leaving no lasting peace. Clearing things out has its permanent spot on the to-do list. We have spent decades accumulating… items linger in every nook and cranny. All the de-clutter gurus say the sooner we come to terms with our ‘stuff ’, the sooner we find more room and freedom to live our lives and focus on the relationships, activities and causes we cherish and believe in. I agree, and believe it most important as we embrace life’s second half where letting go takes precedence over adding and holding.

Start with discarding IT ALL BEGINS WITH DISCARDING, the experts say. Marie Kondo emphasizes this first step in her best-selling book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Easier said than done, she says, but once you start the clearing out process, your life will start to change and you will establish a lifestyle that brings you more peace and vitality. Kondo offers practical ideas for getting started and staying motivated. Don’t even think about organizing or putting away until you have done the discarding. Start with items such as clothes and books, leaving the photos and memorabilia until later in the process. And literally hold or touch each item to determine if it brings you joy or has served its purpose and is time to pass it on. There are many books and articles related to this ‘magic’ of discarding and freeing up space. For example, the AARP Bulletin from March 2016 had a nifty article on the ‘20 ways to downsize or just clean up.’ This would not be such a hot topic, and Marie Kondo would not have a best seller, if it weren’t striking a cord for so many folks. But remember, the answers come easy. It’s the commitment to follow through that will lead to success.

After the clearing

MY FRIEND JANE, at age 73, runs a business in Fort Collins helping folks downsize and create enjoyable living spaces. She highlights what she calls the ‘3 C’s’: Clear out, clarify the best use of space, and create beautiful surroundings. Her ideas point to a positive outcome after all the hard work of discarding. Her emphasis on what lies beyond the discarding is a great metaphor for how ‘letting go’ can lead to a life in which purpose becomes clearer and appreciation for the beautiful parts of life are most evident. Life’s journey is a lot about the practice of letting go: letting go of our innocence, youth, kids, parents, the big house, jobs, and preparation for our own dying. But also letting go of regrets, unnecessary expectations, guilt, ego, self-criticism, and roles. Letting go of the unnecessary stuff that surrounds us in our physical environment is an integral part of this journey. And one last word about garages. As I have begun my work of discarding, I have seen the surface of the workbench in my garage for the first time in a few years. And walking through the garage, I definitely feel less stressed and more hopeful. Best to each of you in your discarding and your new spaces.

Hiking hotspots Ribbons of hiking trails traverse the mountains and weave through the plains of northern Colorado. Collins, you’ll find yourself in the Poudre Canyon which is home to many popular trails, including Greyrock, which offers panoramic views of the canyon, Rocky Mountain National Park and the Comanche Peak Wilderness Area. The Thompson Canyon lies west of Loveland and is another treasure trove of trails. Crosier Mountain Trail is one, and is like walking back in time. The trail

winds through Ponderosa pines and Douglas firs, then passes by old homesteads and cabins built by early settlers. Estes Park is at the top of the canyon. It’s surrounded in all directions by natural playgrounds begging to be traversed on two feet, including Lumpy Ridge and Lily Lake. Beyond Estes lies the crown jewel—Rocky Mountain National Park. Its 415 square miles of mountain grandeur will make you feel like you’re on top of the world… which essentially you will be. Down low, the plains east of Interstate 25 provide even more hiking havens. One of the most popular is the Pawnee National Grassland, located 35 miles east of Fort Collins and 25 miles northeast of Greeley in Weld County. Its 190,000 acres are known for its

archeological and geological history, world-class bird and wildlife watching, and night skies free from city light pollution—for those adventurous enough to take a moonlit hike.

Ramblin’ raiment When considering your attire for a jaunt through the woods, start from the ground up, because footwear is one of the most important pieces of outdoor equipment. Comfortable, supportive, waterproof hiking boots or shoes are recommended, paired with wool socks. Before you balk at the thought of your feet held captive inside itchy tubes, know that modern wool socks are made of the soft fleece from merino sheep and they’ll keep your toes comfy, even if they get wet. Next up, ditch moisture-trapping

Pack and go When you go into the wilderness, even for a short day trip, it’s always wise to go prepared for a longer stay. Emergencies and circumstances beyond your control could require you to be out longer than planned. The Mountaineers, a nonprofit group established in 1906 to teach people how to explore and preserve

the great outdoors, is a go-to for resources about everything on the wild side, including this list of Ten Essential Systems and related items you should take whenever you step into the backcountry. Some of the recommended take-alongs may seem excessive, but won’t if you ever need them. Once you pick a route, dress for success and pack sensible gear, nothing’s holding you back from hiking to your hearts content.

Poudre River Trail Kim Sharpe

W

hen Gary Mason retired from his 48-year career as a cross-country truck driver, his wheels didn’t stop turning. “I’m not one to sit still, so when I retired in 2010, I figured I needed something to do, so I bought a bike and started riding the Poudre Trail that I always drove by,” says Mason, who lives in Eaton. “I put a couple thousand miles on that old bike. One day, I was given a trail map by someone else on the trail and I called the number on the back about volunteering.” That was the beginning of Mason’s new career as one of the more

than 200 people who help maintain the Poudre River Trail. But don’t ask him how much time he spends in this capacity. He says, “It’s a labor of love and I don’t want to put a number on it. I don’t count my hours.” Tom Selders, the Poudre River Trail manager, does count hours, however. He reports that on average, trail volunteers work about 26,000 of them annually and Mason’s time accounts for thousands of those. “Gary Mason is a dedicated volunteer and an avid trail user who bikes on the trail at every opportunity, and even though he works part time at the Lowe’s in Greeley, he says his volun-

teer work always comes first,” Selders says. “He is very skilled at making and repairing furniture and doing any kind of woodworking, but in addition is a general handyman. He can be called on to do most anything.” Mason agrees that he’s handy and likes construction work. His contributions to the trail system include building special apparatus for events, cabinets for its learning center and memorial benches for installation along the trail; plowing snow in the winter; and so much more. “When I was a long-distance truck driver for about 50 years, I didn’t have time to do anything but work.

It’s a labor of love and I don’t want to put a number on it. I don’t count my hours. Now, I have a passion for my community and trail work fits what I like. It’s right up my alley.” In his spare time, Mason builds heirloom furniture for family and friends in the workshop he has at his home. He also makes small pieces, like treasure boxes, he donates to organizations like the Wyoming Trucking Association for its fundraising auction. He recommends everyone who can still get up and go, find a place to volunteer. He says, “The first thing you want to decide is what you’re good at and what you enjoy doing. Then find an organization that matches both of those. Volunteering is great!”
