# The Philly Hoop Group Classic (Philadelphia, Pa.) (La Salle game played at the Palestra) * Northeast Conference game

Quick Stat of the Night - RMU’s effort on defense is a big reason why the Colonials are off to their best start in school history at 7-2. Through its first nine games of the 2011-12 season, Robert Morris has held six of its opponents to 60 points or less, with the Colonials a perfect 6-0 in those contests. The school record for most opponents held to 60 points or less in a season is 11, which has happened four times, including each of the last three years. The 1999-2000 and 2010-11 Colonials each held 11 opponents to 60 points or less and both advanced to the Northeast Conference Tournament championship game, while in 2008-09 and 2009-10 RMU also turned the trick 11 times. Both of those squads earned automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.

Head Coach Andrew Toole Second Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far. Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 35-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2011-12 campaign marks his second season as head coach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 25-16 (.610). Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole. Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime to Long Island, 85-82. Despite a roster that features just one senior for the second straight year, Toole will lead a program in 2011-12 that is looking for its third NEC Tournament championship in four years, a feat that has been accomplished only once in league history. The Colonials won the 1989, 1990 and 1992 NEC Tournament crowns. “Our players are not old, but they should have an understanding of what it takes to win,” Toole said. “Let’s take the last 10 or 12 games of last year and now mesh the new guys in and keep going in the right direction.” Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of two, three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 108-56 (.659), with the 108 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. Since Toole joined the staff in 2007-08, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 91-45 (.669). While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last four years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 58-14 (.806) against league opposition and enter the 2011-12 season having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. At 31 years old, Toole is the youngest head coach at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest. Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

The defensive pressure that Robert Morris has employed over the last five seasons has allowed the program to post each of its top three totals for largest margin of victory against a Northeast Conference opponent in school history. The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. In fact, only four games in league annals have been decided by 50 or more points, and RMU owns two of them. Robert Morris posted a 95-45 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2/7/08) at the Sewall Center, while Long Island defeated Wagner, 127-77, February 11, 1998, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Robert Morris was tabbed second in 2006, 2007 and 2010 and third in 2008 and 2009 ... Conducted annually, NEC coaches have failed to correctly forecast the eventual league champion since selecting Mount St. Mary’s to win it all in 1998-99, and have proven inaccurate in 22 of the last 24 years ... He owns an overall record of 279-207 (.574), including a mark of 108-72 (.600) with the Vikings. Prior to being named the 15th head coach in Cleveland State history April 6, 2006, Waters led Kent State from 1996 to 2001 and Rutgers from 2001 to 2006. RMU’s Last Game - Robert Morris earned its third straight victory in come-from-behind fashion, Dec. 6, posting a 64-60 win over Duquesne at the A.J. Palumbo Center. Trailing, 56-51, with 4:38 to play, the Colonials closed the game on a 13-4 run to earn the victory. A pair of threepointers ignited the deciding rally, as sophomore guard Anthony Myers connected from long range to start the run, while a trifecta from redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson gave the Colonials a 57-56 advantage with 3:14 remaining. Andre Marhold pushed Duquesne back in front, 58-57, with a layup off an offensive rebound, but the Colonials took the lead for good, 59-58, on a pair of free throws from junior forward Lijah Thompson with just 2:15 to go. The Dukes had three opportunities to grab the lead back, but Eric Evans suffered a turnover, B.J. Monteiro missed a three-pointer and Jerry Jones missed a layup off an offensive rebound of the Monteiro miss. RMU pushed its lead to 61-58 with just 30 seconds to play when redshirt junior guard Velton Jones fed Thompson in the paint, who produced an up-and-under layup. Sean Johnson would close the Duquesne deficit to 61-60 with a layup with 14 seconds left in regulation, but the Colonials sealed the victory at the free-throw line, getting a pair from Jones with just under 10 seconds remaining and one from redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams after an Evans three-pointer was off the mark. The first half featured three ties and eight lead changes, with Duquesne taking a 32-28 advantage into the break by closing the half on a 7-3 spurt. The Dukes stretched their lead to 37-30 in the opening minutes of the second half thanks to a pair of free throws from T.J. McConnell and a three-pointer from Evans, but a 13-5 surge by Robert Morris tied the game, 43-43, with 11:49 to play. A three-point play from Monteiro and a three-pointer by Mike Talley quickly pushed Duquesne's lead to 49-43 before the Colonials made their final push to pull out the win. Thompson led four players in double figures scoring for RMU, compiling 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor and going 5-for-6 at the free-throw line. He also added five rebounds and tied a career high with four blocks. Leading Scorers: Thompson (17), Johnson (15), Jones, V. Four Score and ... In a 64-60 victory @ Duquesne (12/6/11), Robert Morris had four players reach double figures in scoring as junior forward Lijah Thompson paced the Colonials with 17 points. Joining Thompson was redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson (15), redshirt junior guard Velton Jones (13) and sophomore guard Anthony Myers (10). In six of RMU’s nine games so far this season, four Colonials have scored in double figures, with Robert Morris owning a record of 4-2 (.667) in those contests. In the two seasons Andrew Toole has been the head coach at Robert Morris, the Colonials are 10-5 (.667) when at least four players score in double figures in a game. Jones leads RMU in career doublefigure scoring games with 41, with the Colonials owning a mark of 25-16 (.610) when he scores at least 10 points in a game. The Daytona 500 - Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson has been RMU’s most consistent rebounder over the last three years, and he continues to produce on the glass in 2011-12. Through the first nine games of the year, Johnson has grabbed a team-high 54 boards, an average of 6.0 per game. The program’s active leading rebounder with 442 career caroms, Johnson is looking to become the 16th player in school history to join the 500-rebound club and the first since former Colonial Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) turned the trick during the 2008-09 campaign. Based on his current per game average, Johnson is on pace to eclipse 500 career rebounds Jan. 14, 2012, at home against Sacred Heart. 30-for-30 - Robert Morris has made a point to attack the basket in the early portion of the 2011-12 campaign, and the results are encouraging. In a 69-51 victory over Monmouth (12/3/11), the Colonials visited the charity stripe 31 times, converting 22 (71 percent). RMU has now won 33 consecutive games when visiting the charity stripe at least 30 times in a game. The last loss for the Robert Morris came in the 2002 Northeast Conference Tournament, when the Colonials suffered an 85-76 loss to UMBC (3/1/02) despite going 24-for-31 (77.4 percent) at the chalk. Through its first nine games of the 2011-12 campaign, RMU is averaging 25.4 free-throw attempts per contest. The Race Heats Up - Thanks to a career-high 38 points in an 82-77 victory @ James Madison (11/22/11), redshirt junior guard Velton Jones has a chance to become the first player at Robert Morris to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau since former Colonial guard Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) turned the trick during the 2007-08 campaign. Jones enters Thursday’s game against Cleveland State e as the program’s active leading scorer with 817 career points and would need to average 8.3 points over RMU’s final 22 regular-season contests to become the 20th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points. Mr. Jones - Notes on Velton Jones’ 38-point performance in an 82-77 victory @ James Madison (11/22/11) ... The 38 points is tied for the fourth highest single-game total in school history with former guard Gene Nabors (1995-2000), who finished with 38 in a 72-52 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) (3/3/00) in the quarterfinals of the 2000 Northeast Conference Tournament ... Four of RMU’s top five scoring games in school history have come away from the Charles L. Sewall Center ... Jones scored 20 points in the first half against the Dukes, becoming the first Colonial to score at least 20 points in a half since former Colonial A.J. Jackson (2003-08) finished with 21 in the first half en route to a 39point performance in an 89-77 win over Quinnipiac (2/12/06) ... Jones converted 15 free throws against the Dukes, a career high and tied for the second highest single-game total in school history. Streaker - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones enters Thursday’s game against Cleveland State having reached double figures in scoring in each of his last 15 games dating back to last season, the longest active streak by a Colonial. Over that span Jones is averaging 16.6 points per contest. It’s the longest streak since former forward Chaz McCrommon (2000-05) scored in double figures 16 straight games during the 2004-05 season. Board Games - A big key to the success that Robert Morris has had over the last four seasons has been due in large part to the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 74-11 (.881) when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 70-9 (.886) mark when outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s two seasons as head coach, RMU has posted a record of 18-5 (.783) when outrebounding its opponent.

Thomas shot 49 percent (49-for-100) from deep in 2003-04 against league foes, while Coleman converted 45.5 percent (51-of-112) of his shots in 2005-06. In 2008-09, Langhurst paced the circuit at 48.1 percent (38-for-79).

2010-11 RMU Basketball

Luck of the Draw - Freshman forward Lucky Jones has been a consistent presence on the glass for Robert Morrs in the early portion of the 2011-12 campaign, as he enters Thursday’s game against Cleveland State ranked second for RMU in rebounding with an average of 5.8 per contest. Jones was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week (12/5/11) after averaging 12.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in victories over Fairleigh Dickinson (12/1/11) and Monmouth (12/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Jones produced a season-high 15 points to pace the Colonials in the win over the Hawks and owns a career high of 13 rebounds, which he set in RMU’s season-opening victory over Rider (11/11/11) at the Sewall Center. The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last three seasons, as the redshirt junior enters Thursday’s game against Cleveland State owning the longest active streak for both games played and games started. Jones has played in 76 straight games for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and has earned 61 straight starts. Jones owns 71 career starts overall, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson ranks second for Robert Morris in career starts with 36. Jones and Johnson have each appeared in 76 consecutive games for RMU, the longest active streak, while junior forward Lijah Thompson is next, having appeared in 53 consecutive games. Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketball program over the last five seasons has been defense. Even with second-year head coach Andrew Toole on the sidelines, RMU’s attention to detail on defense hasn’t changed. Robert Morris improved to 72-13 (.847) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to 70 points or less thanks to a 64-60 victory @ Duquesne (12/6/11), including a mark of 21-7 ( .750) under Toole. Streak Snapped - One of the longest streaks in school history at Robert Morris was snapped in a 51-44 win over La Salle (11/25/11) as part of the 2011 Philly Hoop Group Classic. The Colonials finished 0-for-6 from beyond the arc against the Explorers, snapping a streak of 532 consecutive games in which RMU hit at least one three-pointer in a game. Coincidentally, RMU also finished 0-for-6 from downtown the last time it failed to hit a three-pointer but also won, posting an 84-66 victory over Long Island (2/20/93) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Steal City - The defensive pressure Robert Morris has turned up in its 7-2 start to the 2011-12 campaign shouldn’t come as a surprise. The Colonials have forced 142 turnovers in their first nine games, recording 72 steals. In a 66-54 win over Fairleigh Dickinson (12/1/11) in its 2011-12 Northeast Conference opener, RMU recorded 12 thefts, including a career-high four steals from freshman forward Lucky Jones. So far this season the Colonials are averaging 8.00 steals per contest, which is tied for second in the Northeast Conference with Wagner. In two seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, RMU owns a record 8-3 (.727) when finishing with at least 10 steals in a game. In The Clutch - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones came through with one of the biggest shots of his career in a 64-62 victory @ No. 2 seed Quinnipiac (3/6/11) in the semifinals of the 2011 NEC Tournament, hitting a jumper with 4.3 seconds to play to give the Colonials the victory. Jones, who finished with 13 points, eight assists and three steals in the win over the Bobcats, added his name to a pantheon of greats at RMU that has sank a game-winning shot in final 15 seconds of a game. Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989. The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 26 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson. The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008. A look at the year-by-year record for Robert Morris playing at home since the opening of the Sewall Center in 1985:

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still tops in the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2001-02 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.09 three-pointers per contest, ahead of St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.01 three-pointers a game. In 201011, guard Karon Abraham paced Robert Morris by draining 59 three-pointers, while redshirt freshman guard Coron Williams finished with 48. As a club, the Colonials finished fourth in the NEC in 2010-11 with an average of 6.72 per game. A breakdown of the NEC’s top five teams in three-pointers made since the 2001-02 campaign ... Team 1.
