Quick Stat of the Night - Thursday’s game against @ Memphis marks the fifth time in school history that Robert Morris will play in an NBA Arena, as the FedExForum also doubles up in serving as the home of the Memphis Grizzlies. The Colonials own a record of 1-4 (.200) all-time in games played at the home of an NBA organization, but in their last contest in such a venue RMU earned a victory. During the 2008-09 campaign, Robert Morris posted a 73-60 victory over Central Michigan (12/20/08) in a neutral site contest at The Palace of Auburn Hills, which serves as the home of the NBA’s Detroit Pistons. In the win over the Chippewas former guard Jeremy Chappell (200509) led RMU with 20 points and also recorded 10 rebounds and four steals, while former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) contributed 11 points off the bench. That season the Colonials went on to post an overall record of 24-11 (.686) and advanced to the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

Head Coach Andrew Toole Second Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far. Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 35-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2011-12 campaign marks his second season as head coach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 28-17 (.622). Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole. Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime to Long Island, 85-82. Despite a roster that features just one senior for the second straight year, Toole will lead a program in 2011-12 that is looking for its third NEC Tournament championship in four years, a feat that has been accomplished only once in league history. The Colonials won the 1989, 1990 and 1992 NEC Tournament crowns. “Our players are not old, but they should have an understanding of what it takes to win,” Toole said. “Let’s take the last 10 or 12 games of last year and now mesh the new guys in and keep going in the right direction.” Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of two, three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 108-56 (.659), with the 108 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. Since Toole joined the staff in 2007-08, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 91-45 (.669). While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last four years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 58-14 (.806) against league opposition and enter the 2011-12 season having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. At 31 years old, Toole is the youngest head coach at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest. Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

The defensive pressure that Robert Morris has employed over the last five seasons has allowed the program to post each of its top three totals for largest margin of victory against a Northeast Conference opponent in school history. The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. In fact, only four games in league annals have been decided by 50 or more points, and RMU owns two of them. Robert Morris posted a 95-45 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2/7/08) at the Sewall Center, while Long Island defeated Wagner, 127-77, February 11, 1998, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Robert Morris was tabbed second in 2006, 2007 and 2010 and third in 2008 and 2009 ... Conducted annually, NEC coaches have failed to correctly forecast the eventual league champion since selecting Mount St. Mary’s to win it all in 1998-99, and have proven inaccurate in 22 of the last 24 years ... Scouting the Tigers - Memphis enters Thursday’s game with Robert Morris sporting an overall record of 6-5 (.545) after suffering a 70-59 setback @ Georgetown (12/22/11) in its final game before the Christmas holiday. In that contest sophomore guard Chris Crawford led the Tigers with 17 points, while sophomore guard Will Barton contributed 12 points. Barton leads Memphis in scoring, producing 19.9 points per game while also shooting 53.1 percent (76-for-143) from the field. He also adds a team-high 8.8 rebounds per contest and ranks second for the Tigers in both blocks (11) and steals (17). Two other members of the Memphis roster average in double figures scoring, as sophomore guard Joe Jackson and freshman forward Adonis Thomas average 12.8 and 10.1 points per game, respectively. Memphis Head Coach - In his third season as head coach of the Tigers is Josh Pastner (Arizona ’88), who owns an overall record of 55-25 (.688) entering Thursday’s game with Robert Morris. Pastner led Memphis to an overall record of 25-10 last season, a Conference USA Tournament championship and a spot in the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Pastner inked a contract extension in March of 2011 that will keep him on the sidelines at Memphis through 2015-16. RMU’s Last Game - Redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams connected for a three-pointer with 0.3 seconds remaining to help lift Robert Morris to a 59-56 victory over Youngstown State, Dec. 22, at the Beeghly Center. The Colonials were trailing by three, 56-53, after Ashten Ward hit one of two free throws with 53 seconds to go, but sophomore guard Anthony Myers with 40 seconds to play knotted the score, 56-56. On the following possession, Youngstown State dribbled out much of the shot clock before attacking the basket, but an errant pass by Kendrick Perry went out of bounds with nine seconds remaining in regulation. On the game’s final possession, redshirt junior guard Velton Jones drew a triple team on the baseline, and in turn he kicked out to a wide open Williams, who got the winning triple off with 0.3 seconds left in regulation. Jones finished with 15 points, five rebounds and six assists for RMU, while Williams contributed 14 points. Perry had a game-high 18 points lead all scorers and was one of a trio of Penguins in double figures scoring for the Penguins. DuShawn Brooks added 16 points while Blake Allen contributed 12 points and eight assists. A back-and-forth affair in the opening four minutes of action, Youngstown State hit four consecutive three-pointers to turn a four-point deficit into a 19-12 advantage with 13:40 left in the opening half. Robert Morris then held the Penguins scoreless for nearly four minutes, enabling the Colonials to pull within one, 21-20, before taking a 25-24 edge on a jumper from Williams. Youngstown State eventually entered halftime with a 32-31 lead, and both squads struggled offensively out of the gates after intermission, with the Colonials taking a brief 36-35 advantage after a tip-in by freshman forward Keith Armstrong. The Penguins eventually took a seven-point lead, 55-48, with 4:03 to play after a pair of free throws from DuShawn Brooks, but Robert Morris would close the game on an 11-1 surge. The final five points of the contest for Youngstown State came at the charity stripe, with the Penguins shooting 0-for-6 from the field in the final 5:18 of action while Perry suffered the crucial turnover with nine seconds to go. Surf Board - Robert Morris has been absolutely stellar on the glass in recent weeks, as the Colonials enter Thursday’s game @ Memphis leading the Northeast Conference in rebounding defense, yielding an average of 30.2 rebounds per contest. RMU has been extremely efficient in the last six games, posting a rebounding margin of +8.8 per game. Included in that stretch is a margin of +18 on the glass in a 72-64 victory over LouisianaLafayette (12/17/11), RMU’s largest margin against a non-conference opponent since outrebounding Navy (11/14/07), 50-28 (+22), in a 93-77 victory as part of the 2007 Philly Hoop Group Classic in Annapolis, Md. Board Games - A big key to the success that Robert Morris has had over the last four seasons has been due in large part to the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 76-12 (.864) when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 72-10 (.878) mark when outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s two seasons as head coach, RMU has posted a record of 20-6 (.769) when outrebounding its opponent, including a mark of 6-2 (.750) in 2011-12. Streaker - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones enters Thursday’s game @ Memphis having reached double figures in scoring in each of his last 19 games dating back to last season, the longest active streak by a Colonial. Over that span Jones is averaging 16.6 points per contest. The streak stands as the third longest in school history, and he is just one game shy of becoming only the third player in school history to score at least 10 points in a game in 20 consecutive contests. Four Score and ... In a 64-54 win over Hampton (12/20/11), Robert Morris had four players reach double figures in scoring as redshirt junior guard Velton Jones paced the Colonials with 18 points. Joining Jones was freshman forward Lucky Jones (16), sophomore forward Mike McFadden (11) and redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams (10). In eight of RMU’s 13 games so far this season, four Colonials have scored in double figures, with Robert Morris owning a record of 6-2 (.750) in those contests. In the two seasons Andrew Toole has been the head coach at Robert Morris, the Colonials are 12-5 (.706) when at least four players score in double figures in a game. The Daytona 500 - Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson has been RMU’s most consistent rebounder over the last three years, and he continues to produce on the glass in 2011-12. Through the first 13 games of the year, Johnson has grabbed a team-high 74 boards, an average of 5.7 per game. The program’s active leading rebounder with 462 career caroms, Johnson is looking to become the 16th player in school history to join the 500-rebound club and the first since former Colonial Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) turned the trick during the 2008-09 campaign. Based on his current rebounding average, Johnson is on pace to become the 21st player in school history to accumulate 500 career rebounds Thursday, Jan. 19, @ Fairleigh Dickinson. 30-for-30 - Robert Morris has made a point to attack the basket in the early portion of the 2011-12 campaign, and the results are encouraging. In a 72-64 victory over LouisianaLafayette (12/17/11), the Colonials tied a season high by visiting the charity stripe 35 times, converting 26 (74.3 percent). RMU has now won 34 consecutive games when visiting the charity stripe at least 30 times in a game. The last loss for the Robert Morris came in the 2002 NEC Tournament, when the Colonials suffered an 85-76 loss to UMBC (3/1/02) despite going 24-for-31 (77.4 percent) at the chalk. Through its first 11 games of the 2011-12 campaign, RMU is averaging 24.9 free-throw attempts per contest.

In The Clutch - You certainly could say that Robert Morris has a flair for the dramatic. In a 59-56 win @ Youngstown State, redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams buried a three-pointer with 0.3 seconds to play that helped give the Colonials the victory. Williams is now the third player on RMU’s active roster that has hit a game-winning shot in the last five seconds of a game in the last two years. Luck of the Draw - Freshman forward Lucky Jones has been a consistent presence on the glass for Robert Morris in the early portion of the 2011-12 campaign, as he enters Thursday’s game @ Memphis ranked second for RMU in rebounding with an average of 5.5 per contest. Jones has been a consistent contributor on both ends of the floor in recent weeks, as in his last six games he is averaging 9.2 points and 5.2 rebounds contest. Jones has reached double figures in scoring three times over that span, including a career-high 16 points off the bench in a 64-54 win over Hampton (12/20/11). He is also proving to be an adept free-throw shooter, as he enters Thursday’s game @ Memphis with a conversion rate of 81.3 percent (39-for-48) at the chalk. Return Of The Mack - Robert Morris received a boost to its lineup when sophomore forward Mike McFadden, a transfer from Iona, became eligible to play for the Colonials after sitting out a year due to NCAA transfer rules. McFadden made his RMU debut in a 72-64 win over Louisiana-Lafayette (12/17/11), supplying 13 points and six rebounds. In three games since returning to the active roster, McFadden is averaging 9.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game while shooting 40.9 percent (9-for-22) from the field. He has also proven to be an effective shot blocker, posting five blocks in his first three games at Robert Morris, including a career-high three rejections in a 59-56 win @ Youngstown State (12/22/11). The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last three seasons, as the redshirt junior enters Thursday’s game @ Memphis owning the longest active streak for both games played and games started. Jones has played in 80 straight games for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and has earned 65 straight starts. Jones owns 75 career starts overall, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson ranks second for Robert Morris in career starts with 40. Jones and Johnson have each appeared in 80 consecutive games for RMU, the longest active streak, while sophomore guard Anthony Myers is next, having appeared in 45 straight games. Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketball program over the last five seasons has been defense. Even with second-year head coach Andrew Toole on the sidelines, RMU’s attention to detail on defense hasn’t changed. Thanks to a 59-56 victory @ Youngstown State (12/22/11), Robert Morris improved to 75-14 (.843) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70 points, including a mark of 24-8 ( .750) under Toole. Poll Position - Robert Morris made a return to the Mid-Major Top 25 poll according to CollegeInsider.com last week, slotting at No. 24 after a 72-64 victory over LouisianaLafayette (12/20/11). Thanks to wins last week over Hampton and Youngstown State, the Colonials jumped up four spots to No. 20 in the latest weekly poll. RMU owns the highest ranking of any NEC institution in league history in the poll, peaking at No. 12 in February of 2008 en route to final ranking of No. 22.

2010-11 RMU Basketball

Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989. The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 26 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson. The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008. A look at the year-by-year record for Robert Morris playing at home since the opening of the Sewall Center in 1985:

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still tops in the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2001-02 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.09 three-pointers per contest, ahead of St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.04 three-pointers a game. In 201011, guard Karon Abraham paced Robert Morris by draining 59 three-pointers, while redshirt freshman guard Coron Williams finished with 48. As a club, the Colonials finished fourth in the NEC in 2010-11 with an average of 6.72 per game. A breakdown of the NEC’s top five teams in three-pointers made since the 2001-02 campaign ... Team 1.
