Dear Member of the RMU Athletics family, We are pleased to present the 2014-15 Department of Athletics Annual Report. In the pages that follow, you will find a very long list of impressive accomplishments by our excellent student-athletes and coaches, supported by our superb staff and University faculty. This marks the culmination of so much hard work by so many people, and we are proud of each and every accomplishment noted. Of particular significance is that our student-athletes have proven once again that success in athletic competition can be accomplished without sacrificing excellent achievement in the classroom and while maintaining a commitment to community service. Sending two teams to the NCAA Tournament in men’s basketball and men’s golf, the second consecutive year a pair of programs have accomplished the feat, as well as Nicole Sleith being named the 2014-15 NEC Female Student-Athlete of the Year, are examples of a University and Athletic Department that continue to thrive. Finally, while this report outlines all of the tangible results attained by our studentathletes, coaches, and staff, the long-term benefit to our student-athletes of their athletic experience can best be measured by their success in their careers and/or post-graduate studies. Combined with the outstanding education and student life opportunities that Robert Morris University affords, the 450+ student-athletes at RMU are all winners! Sincerely,

“Hats off to our fans. They’re some of the most dedicated fans you’ll ever meet. Thick or thin, win or lose, they’re always there.” — Senior forward Lucky Jones
Lucky Jones 2011-15 RMU All-Time Leading Rebounder One of the most versatile student-athletes to occupy a roster spot at Robert Morris was senior Lucky Jones. From his wing position, Jones provided the Colonials with the ability to score from any spot on the floor, showed an uncanny ability to get to the free-throw line and was a tenacious defender. The area he excelled most, however, was his ability to rebound. In his collegiate debut, Jones grabbed 13 rebounds in an 83-57 victory over Rider (11/11/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. From that point forward, Jones cleaned the glass at a furious pace, culminating in him becoming the program’s all-time leading rebounder as a senior. A look at some of his accomplishments … ■ Jones was a key contributor in helping Robert Morris earn its first victory in the NCAA Tournament since 1983 and just the program’s second win overall in an 81-77 victory over North Florida (3/18/15) in Dayton, Ohio, at UD Arena. Jones paced the Colonials with 21 points and also added seven rebounds and five steals. The win over the Ospreys marked the 92nd victory Jones was a part of during his four seasons in an RMU uniform, the most wins accumulated by any student-athlete in school history and breaking the old record of 91 that was held by a trio of Colonials (Gary Wallace, Velton Jones and Russell Johnson).
■ Jones etched his name in the RMU record book against St. Francis Brooklyn (1/16/15) at the Charles L. Sewall Center, as his defensive rebound at the 19:05 mark of the second half helped him become the program’s all-time leading rebounder. Jones finished with nine caroms against the Terriers and concluded his career with 846 rebounds. He broke the old record of 751 that was held by former Colonials Anthony Dickens (1985-90) and Tony Lee (2004-08). A look at the top five rebounders in program history … Name

■ Saved some of the best basketball of his career for the stretch run of the 2014-15 campaign, as Jones led the Colonials in scoring in the 2015 Northeast Conference Tournament at 16.7 points per game. For his efforts, Jones earned a spot on the 2015 All-NEC Tournament Team. ■ Became just the third player in Northeast Conference history to eclipse career totals of 1,300 points, 700 rebounds, 150 assists and 150 steals. Jones concluded his career with totals of 1,642 points, 846 rebounds, 186 assists and 171 steals. He joined former RMU guard Tony Lee (2004-08) and former LIU Brooklyn forward Jamal Olasewere (2009-13) to turn the trick.
■ A big reason Jones finished as one of the top five scorers in program history was due to his ability to get to the charity stripe. Jones finished his career by converting 79.7 percent (448for-562) of his attempts at the chalk, which ranks just outside the top 10 all-time at Robert Morris. Jones became just the second player in school history to convert at least 400 career free throws, joining former teammate Velton Jones (2008-13). ■ Jones owns the RMU single-game record for most free throws made without a miss at the Charles L. Sewall Center. In a 60-48 victory over in-state rival Saint Francis U. (2/6/13) during his sophomore campaign, Jones finished a perfect 13-for-13 at the charity stripe en route to a gamehigh 20 points. ■ Appeared in nine career postseason games across three tournaments (CIT, NIT, NCAA) and never shied away from the big moment. Jones led the Colonials in a 59-57 win over Kentucky (3/19/13) in the first round of the 2013 NIT with 15 points and contributed 25 points in an 89-78 victory @ St. John’s (3/18/14) in the first round of the 2014 NIT. ■ Graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in management in May of 2015.

Nicole Sleith 2012-15 Nicole Sleith left a lasting impression at Robert Morris, from the first time she stepped into the pitching circle until her final pitch four years later. While the numbers Sleith compiled broke numerous records, it was her work in classroom as well as in the community that embodies what Robert Morris tries to develop in the complete student-athlete. A look at some of Sleith’s accomplishments … ■ Led the Colonials to Northeast Conference regular-season championships in 2012, 2013 and 2015. In four years in an RMU uniform, Sleith helped Robert Morris post an overall record of 115-87-1 (.569), including a mark of 49-23 (.681) against league opposition. ■ Named the 2014-15 NEC Female StudentAthlete of the Year, the first ever honoree by a student-athlete of either gender from Robert Morris. The honor recognizes individual excellence in both academic and athletic realms as well as leadership and contributions to one’s community.
■ Named the Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Year in three of her four seasons at Robert Morris, earning the honor in 2012, 2013 and 2015. Sleith was also named the 2012 NEC Rookie of the Year. ■ First member of the Colonials in program history to earn National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region honors four times. Sleith was named to the NFCA Great Lakes Region Second Team in 2012, 2013 and 2015 while earning third team honors in 2014. She was one of just 11 players nationally, as well as just one of three not from a power five conference, to earn the accolade four times. ■ As a senior in 2015 established an RMU single-season record and tied the NEC single-season mark for strikeouts with 296. Sleith also owns single-season school records for appearances (48), innings pitched (247), wins (25) and saves (5). Each of those records came in 2012, while she also saved five games in 2013.
■ Concluded career as the program’s all-time leader in appearances (147), innings pitched (806.1), wins (78), strikeouts (932) and saves (13) while tying the school record for career starts (114).
■ In July of 2015, Sleith started for a collegiate all-star team and pitched against the USA Softball Women’s National Team at Moody Park in Ewing, N.J. She retired the national team in order in the first inning and held the squad scoreless through three frames.
■ In the 2015 NEC Tournament spun a perfect game in a 2-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (5/8/15), striking out six in the win. It marked the first perfect game in program history and was also Sleith’s third career no-hitter.
■ Carries a 3.72 grade point average (GPA) as part of the integrated engineering program at Robert Morris. She will graduate with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in December of 2015.

Colonials In The Community The Robert Morris Department of Athletics continues to be an active member of the community, both on a local and regional level. Some highlights of the 2014-15 academic year … ■ The RMU Adopt a Highway litter cleanup project is in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Robert Morris has been part of the program since 1996, and every year, Robert Morris student-athletes on two occasions clean a two-mile stretch on I-376 in Moon Township. ■ In October of 2014, the softball squad raised money to benefit No Roof Knapsacks, a local charity to help homeless in the Pittsburgh area. The following spring, the Colonials held their annual Strikeout Cancer doubleheader in conjunction with the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) to raise money for cancer research. ■ The women’s ice hockey squad volunteered at the West Hills Health & Rehabilitation Center in Coraopolis, Pa., in October of 2014, visiting with elderly patients. ■ The men’s ice hockey squad hosted Men’s Cancer Awareness weekend during its two-game set against Air Force at the RMU Island Sports Center Friday, Nov. 14, and Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014. The weekend featured a silent auction, 50/50 raffle tickets and post-game autograph sessions. ■ The Robert Morris SAAC, in conjunction with the Duquesne SAAC, sponsored its fourth annual food drive when the Colonials and Dukes squared off on the gridiron November 22, 2014, at Rooney Field. Items collected by RMU were turned over to the West Hills Food Pantry in Moon Township, Pa., a non-profit charitable organization that serves between 150 and 200 families in the community and has never closed in its 24 years of operation. Robert Morris donated over 1,000 items to the West Hills Food Pantry. ■ In January of 2015, the women’s ice hockey team, in conjunction with Mercyhurst University, hosted a Toys for Joy fundraiser at its two-game series at the RMU Island Sports Center. Fans were encouraged to being a toy, game, book or donation to one of the games, which in turn was donated to Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital. Seniors Katelynn Scott and Erin Staniewski were co-founders of the project.
■ For the past eight years, members of the men’s basketball team have taken part in after-school activities at the Mooncrest Community Center in Moon Township, Pa. Student-athletes take part in activities like dodge ball, kickball and other activities to help kids become active while also assisting in tutoring with homework.
■ Women’s ice hockey hosted its ninth annual Skate for the Cure weekend at the RMU Island Sports Center Friday, Jan. 23, and Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, during a two-game set with Lindenwood. Founded by College Hockey America (CHA) during the 2006-07 season, Skate for the Cure is a league-wide initiative that involves member institutions dedicating one or two games toward raising funds and awareness for an organization of their choice.
■ The men’s ice hockey team held its second annual Military Appreciation Night when it hosted American International at the RMU Island Sports Center Jan. 17, 2015. All military personnel, active or veteran, received free admission and a five-dollar concession stand voucher. The Colonials wore camouflage jerseys, which were auctioned off in partnership with Hockey Saves, a non-profit organization that supports military personnel and their families by providing them with ice time, hockey equipment, care packages and tickets to live events. Proceeds went to the RMU Veterans’ Emergency Fund.
■ The women’s basketball team hosted its fourth “Elementary School Game”, a 71-58 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson at the Charles L. Sewall Center Feb. 2, 2015. More than 200 students from Cornell School District attended the game. ■ On February 7, 2015, the men’s lacrosse team announced the addition of Michael Dugan through Team IMPACT at a press conference at Joe Walton Stadium. A resident of West Mifflin, Pa., Dugan was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis upon newborn screening. Throughout the 2015 season, Dugan wore No. 46. Team IMPACT is a non-profit organization charted to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening illnesses.
■ Throughout the course of the 2014-15 season, both the men’s and women’s ice hockey teams held various community programs. Included this year were four “Skate with the Colonials” nights, which were free to fans that brought their own skates. ■ A total of 30 student-athletes from across six Robert Morris programs took part in the 11th annual Best Buddies “Beach Ball Bash” that was hosted at Yorktown Hall Sunday, April 19. Best buddies is a nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and development disabilities (IDD). Student-athletes from football, women’s basketball, cross country and track & field, men’s soccer and volleyball took part. ■ Robert Morris continued its popular youth soccer clinics, which are held each spring in Joe Walton Stadium and annually draws over 100 participants. ■ During the 2014-15 academic year, the Robert Morris Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) took part in a service project called Minis for Many. Throughout the year, studentathletes collected unused mini toiletries during their hotel stays and brought them back to
campus to a central collection bin. At the end of the semester, RMU donated the items to the Salvation Army Family Crisis Center in Pittsburgh. The Robert Morris SAAC looks to continue its efforts in regard to Minis for Many in 2015-16.
RMU Athletic Hall of Fame CLASS OF 2014
The RMU Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1991 to honor those who have made an outstanding contribution to Robert Morris athletics. Nominations are solicited and individuals selected by the Hall of Fame Committee. Players, coaches and administrators are eligible for selection five years after they have concluded their career at Robert Morris. Veteran’s choices, those who have concluded their career for at least 20 years, are also considered.
■ The RMU Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2014 was comprised of six individuals, including five former student-athletes and one coach.
■ Former student-athletes Tony Lee (men’s basketball 2004-08), Melissa Lockhart (women’s tennis; 1993-97), Brianne McLaughlin (women’s ice hockey; 2005-09), Sugeiry Monsac (women’s basketball; 2004-07) and Jeff Witmyer (men’s track & field; 2004-08) as well as former head volleyball coach Tim Horsmon, who guided the Colonials from 1999 to 2002, comprised the class. ■ The class was inducted at the second annual RMU Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner Friday, Jan. 30, 2015, at the Sheraton Pittsburgh Airport. ■ KDKA sportscaster Bob Pompeani served as Master of Ceremonies.
RMU All-Sports Banquet
The Robert Morris University Department of Athletics honored its student-athletes for the 2014-15 school year at its 21st annual All-Sports Banquet, held at the Charles L. Sewall Center in April of 2015. Led by master of ceremonies Chris Shovlin, the radio play-by-play voice of Colonial athletics for the last 28 years, Robert Morris presented most valuable player plaques to each of its 16 intercollegiate sports, while 12 individuals and one team were also honored, respectively, with major awards.
