Against the Knights The Colonials fared well against Fairleigh Dickinson in their all-time history, holding a 23-7 record against the Knights. Prior to dropping its regular-season finale to the Knights last season, RMU had won 19 straight matches over FDU. Scouting Fairleigh Dickinson The Knights were picked to finish seventh in the NEC this season according to a poll of the conference’s head coaches. FDU comes into this meeting with a record of 2-11, holding wins over Fordham and Quinnipiac. Freshman outside hitter Carly O’Sullivan is the lone Knight with triple-digit kills (105) and is third on the team in digs with 126. Assisting on most of those attempts is junior setter Allison Butler, who paces the team with 399 assists. Defensively, FDU has gotten a combined 90 blocks between middle hitters Hanifa Addi (51) and Caroline Laton (39). Laton leads the team with 10 solo stops. Match #2 - SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 - 1:00 PM Robert Morris vs. Sacred Heart (5-7, 0-0 NEC) Charles L. Sewall Center - Moon Township, Pa. Against the Pioneers The Colonials have held the upper hand against Sacred Heart, compiling a record of 18-6 in 24 matches. RMU has split with the Pioneers the past five regular seasons and hold the most recent win of the series, a 3-0 sweep at home on Nov. 16, 2013. Scouting sacred Heart The Pioneers, who earned the lone non-LIU Brooklyn first-place vote in this year’s NEC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, enter this match with an overall record of 5-7. SHU won the Hofstra Invitational two weeks ago and also hold wins over Iona and Delaware. Sophomore right side Sarah Krufka has a team-high 163 kills on the season, while junior outside hitter Tori Kemper and freshman middle blocker Makayla Dole are each in the triple-digits for kills with 132 and 119, respectively. Sophomore defensive specialist Ana Gonzalez keys the Pioneers defensively, as she is the only player with three figures in digs (162). Sophomore middle blocker Jene Lee leads SHU in blocks with 33, all of which are assisted.

The senior trio have also played well against Sacred Heart. Robb has 52 kills and 47 digs in six matches versus the Pioneers, while Jay has tallied 26 kills and 28 blocks (1 kill, 27 assist). Bograd has 50 digs against SHU in her career. All-Tourney honors Becky Jay earned All-Tournament honors at the Golden Grizzly Invite after putting together possibly her best weekend of the season. Jay tallied 34 kills and hit at a .265 clip offensively, and collected 10 blocks (4 solo, 6 assists) defensively. ANOTHER GEAR Robert Morris has gotten off to good starts in NEC play the last six seasons, compiling a record of 10-1 in six opening weekends. The lone Colonial loss in this timeframe came at Sacred Heart last season, but prior to that RMU had won 10 straight matches in the first weekend of NEC play. Some of the notable victories include wins at LIU Brooklyn in 2010 and 2011, and Bryant in 2012. A Special Dominance The Colonials defeated UMass Lowell in four sets on Sept. 6 to earn their first win of the season. In the final set, RMU dominated the Riverhawks to the tune of 25-7. This was the first time since 2012 that the Colonials allowed less than 10 points in a set. In that season, RMU took the first set of an eventual three-set win at Quinnipiac, 25-8. The Colonials again accomplished the feat against the Bobcats, knocking them off 25-9 in the third and final set at home. Senior lEADERSHIP Robert Morris head coach Dale Starr will be able to lean on a strong senior class in 2014, as his roster features seven fourth-year players. This senior class is the largest Starr has had during his tenure with the Colonials, surpassing the 2010 team which featured five seniors. APRIL KNOWS APRIL Sophomore middle blocker April Krivoniak enjoyed a fine rookie season with 229 kills, 54 total blocks, and a .229 hitting percentage, but she might have been just as impressive in her other sport. As a thrower on the Robert Morris track & field team, Krivoniak finished third at the NEC Outdoor Championships in the shot put with a throw of 12.69 meters (41’7.75”), which earned herself All-NEC Rookie Team accolades.
Recapping Last Weekend UC-IRVINE 3, Robert Morris 0 (22-25, 16-25, 11-25) The Colonials dropped their opening match of the Golden Grizzly Invite to UC-Irvine last weekend in three sets. RMU picked up 11 digs each from Arden Fisher, Brianna Frakes, and Melissa Bograd, along with seven kills from Becky Jay on a .333 hitting percentage. Oakland 3, Robert Morris 1 (14-25, 22-25, 26-24, 19-25) RMU took the third set from the Golden Grizzlies, but ultimately fell in four sets to Oakland. Erica Robb tallied 12 kills and 10 digs for her 15th career double-double, while April Krivoniak hit a .455 clip with 12 kills. Melissa Bograd led the Colonials defensively with 21 digs. Bowling Green 3, Robert MOrris 2 (21-25, 25-15, 29-27, 20-25, 8-15) Despite holding a 2-1 lead, the Colonials dropped their final match of the Golden Grizzly Invite in five sets. Arden Fisher collected 11 kills and 12 digs for a double-double, while Becky Jay led the team with 19 kills. Jay and Fisher joined April Krivoniak (10) and Kristin Thompson (11) as RMU players who had double-digit kills. Brianna Frakes dished out a career-high 48 assists in the loss.

Starr brings a vast background in collegiate coaching to Robert Morris, having served as the head coach at McNeese State University from 2004 until he joined RMU in 2010. He was also the head coach at DivisionII Mississippi University for Women from 1999 to 2002. In 2013, Starr guided a senior-less RMU team to their 15th-consecutive NEC Tournament berth, finishing the conference slate of the schedule with a record of 8-6. The Colonials led the conference in digs and Starr had a student-athlete make an All-NEC team for the fourth straight season. On Oct. 19, Starr earned his 200th career win with a three-set sweep of St. Francis (Pa.). With a senior-heavy roster in 2012, Starr led the Colonials to their 14th-consecutive NEC Tournament behind the strength of 13 regular-season wins against NEC foes. Despite a slow start in early-season tournaments, Starr led RMU to a thrilling fiveset victory over West Virginia, the first victory over a Big-XII team in program history. Two members of Starr’s 2012 squad would earn All-NEC honors for the second-consecutive season while one studentathlete would lead the NEC in blocks per match. The highlight of the 2011 season under Starr had to be the three-set sweep of crosstown-rival Pittsburgh. The win was the first victory over the Panthers in program history. Behind a 10-6 record in the NEC, the Colonials would earn a postseason berth for the 13th-consecutive time while two of Starr’s studentathletes would earn All-NEC accolades. In his first season with Robert Morris, two of Starr’s student-athletes claimed first team all-conference honors in 2010 and a total of four claimed weekly honors from the NEC. Some of the highlights for Starr’s first season may have come off the court due to the Colonials’ gaudy academic performances. Starr then guided his squad to a victory over then six-time defending NEC champion LIU-Brooklyn in the conference tournament semifinals. After eliminating the Blackbirds in a thrilling, five-set match, RMU then competed in its 13th league championship match, extending its own conference record.
