In each of its last four games against Syracuse, Robert Morris has trailed in the second period or later, but each time the Colonials have produced a comeback to earn at least one point. Earlier this season, Kelsey Thomas rifled a shot into the top shelf of the cage to provide the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory Dec. 9 as Brianna Delaney notched a multi-point effort. The following afternoon Rebecca Vint notched her first-career game-tying goal while Kristen DiCiocco posted 35 saves, including seven during the final 30 seconds of overtime, as RMU rallied for a 1-1 draw. Delaney is the Colonials’ all-time leader in points against Syracuse (3g, 5a) while sophomore Thea Imbrogno has registered six points in six games against the Orange in her career.
Scouting Syracuse
Syracuse enters the weekend series coming off a 3-2 win at Quinnipiac in its non-conference finale Jan. 28. Freshman Nicole Ferrara netted the game-winner with fewer than nine minutes left while sophomore goaltender Kallie Billadeau tallied 53 saves in the victory. After posting the quality win, Syracuse took home honors in all three of the weekly CHA awards. Sophomore Margot Scharfe was named player of the week and joined Billadeau and Ferrara in snagging the accolades. This Saturday’s series finale will be the last home game of the season for the Orange and will represent the final home contest for the four seniors on the team. The Orange are a relatively young team as 17 of their 24 members are either freshmen or sophomores. Scharfe leads the team in points with 21 and is tied for tops on the squad in both goals (10) and assists (11). Junior Holly Carrie-Mattimoe is tied for the lead in goals and is second on the squad in points (18). Billadeau has split time in net with Jenesica Drinkwater as they have started 14 and 13 games, respectively.

2011-12 SEASON INFO New Era The Robert Morris women’s hockey program began a new era this season as first-year head coach Paul Colontino is behind the Colonial bench after being hired to the position this past summer. Colontino, who had served as associate head coach at Mercyhurst since 2006, helped guide teams to the NCAA Tournament in each of the past five years, including earning two Frozen Four berths, and has over a decade of women’s hockey coaching experience at the Division I level. For further details on Colontino’s background and history, please go to page 9. While Colontino leads the staff, he also brought on two additional newcomers to help coach the Colonials this past offseason. He hired Allison Rutledge as an assistant coach and added former Colonial Brianne McLaughlin as a volunteer assistant coach. Rutledge, who previously served as an assistant coach at Wayne State since 2007, has earned national recognition and demonstrated success as both a Division I player and coach and also boasts eight years of experience in CHA competition. In her first season at Wayne State, Rutledge and her fellow Warrior coaches were named the National Coaching Staff of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) after finishing the season with the first national ranking in program history and securing a school-record 22 wins. Rutledge helped Wayne State to a share of its first CHA regular-season championship along with breaking the school records for longest winning streak (nine games) and longest unbeaten streak (11 games). Rutledge had a strong pedigree for working with Wayne State’s goalies as she was an All-American goaltender during her playing days at Niagara. She started 110 games in her collegiate career and ranks third all-time in NCAA history with 3,405 saves. McLaughlin had a storied collegiate career for Robert Morris before competing for her country in both Olympic and World Championship events. In 120 career games for Robert Morris, McLaughlin stopped a NCAA-record 3,809 shots, a figure that is more than 200 clear of the closest netminder. McLaughlin was a four-time All-College Hockey America award winner and also earned national defensive player of the week honors on three occasions in her career. Less than one year after she completed her collegiate career, McLaughlin traveled to Vancouver, British Columbia for the 2010 Olympic Games as a member of the U.S. National Team. She appeared in the team’s first game of the tournament, becoming the first Colonial student-athlete to compete in the Olympics, and went on to help the U.S. earn a silver medal.
No Mercy
Sophomore Thea Imbrogno scored with just 53 seconds remaining in regulation to cap a furious comeback as Robert Morris stunned No. 4/5 Mercyhurst with a pair of goals in the final three minutes to claim a thrilling, 3-2, road victory Jan. 21, ending the Lakers’ 28-game conference unbeaten streak. RMU led 1-0 for much of the game before both teams provided a flurry of scoring action in the third period. Mercyhurst scored a pair of goals within the opening eight minutes of the final frame, and it looked as though the Lakers would once again top the Colonials. However, Robert Morris evened the proceedings with a goal off the stick of defenseman Jamie Joslin with just 2:38 to play, which set up Imbrogno’s heroics. As a result, it marked only the second time in school history in which the Colonials won a game in which they trailed with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. The victory for the Colonials was significant for a litany of reasons, including the fact that their 13th triumph of 2011-12 broke RMU’s previous program record for wins in a season. In his first season at the helm, head coach Paul Colontino, a former member of the Lakers’ staff, led Robert Morris to its first-ever victory over national powerhouse Mercyhurst in the program’s young history. The Lakers entered the action tied for the longest unbeaten streak nationally as they had not lost since Dec. 9, but RMU managed to limit the nation’s best offense en route to the victory. Robert Morris held Mercyhurst to just two scores even though the Lakers began the day averaging more than 5.1 goals per game. Robert Morris successfully killed off all seven Mercyhurst power plays in the contest, a feat made more noteworthy since the Lakers boast the nation’s top man-advantage unit, converting on over 30 percent of their chances. The Colonials also held Laker senior Bailey Bram without a single point even though she entered the weekend leading the nation with over 2.5 points per game.
Winner, Winner When Thea Imbrogno lit the lamp with just 53 seconds remaining in regulation to break a tie and lift Robert Morris to a 3-2 victory at No. 4/5 Mercyhurst Jan. 21, the tally was much more meaningful than a typical game-winner. The win was the Colonials’ 13th of 2011-12, which broke the previous program record, with nine regular-season games remaining. RMU enters the weekend with 14 wins, eight of which have come on the road.
Vint Ties Points Record Freshman Rebecca Vint notched a primary assist at the 1:21 mark of the third period last Monday at Princeton to tally the 32nd point of her rookie campaign, equalizing the Colonials’ single-season record with six regular-season games remaining. She moved alongside current assistant captain Brianna Delaney who registered 32 points during her freshman season of 2008-09. Vint, who also remains two scores shy of matching the Colonials’ single-season goals record, began her career with a bang as she scored in each of her first six games, the first time any Colonial had ever scored in six consecutive contests, while registering multi-point efforts in five of those affairs. She has already had a 12-game point streak, the longest in RMU history, and currently ranks fourth nationally in points per game among rookies (1.33).

Record-Breaking Machines
Assistant captain Brianna Delaney entered her senior season within striking distance of the major remaining offensive career records that she did not already hold. Delaney began to tear up both single-season and career RMU records in her junior campaign. She reset Robert Morris’ career assist record Jan. 9, 2011 when she tallied a helper on a third-period goal at UConn for her sister, Cobina. Brianna Delaney also broke RMU’s single-season assist mark by recording her 19th assist of the season in the CHA Semifinals against No. 3 Mercyhurst. She entered her senior season needing just five points to move atop the Colonials’ all-time points list and quickly worked to achieve that feat. Delaney tallied four points, including a three-point game, on the opening weekend to move into a tie for first in career points and then broke the record Oct. 21 at RPI with a first-period assist. She enters the weekend just one score shy of tying the career goals mark as well. Rookie Rebecca Vint has gotten into the record-breaking act as well (see note on page 3). Block Party
Although Robert Morris came up short Monday at Princeton, the Colonials continued to demonstrate an impressive ability to block shots. RMU blocked 22 Tiger shot attempts, and the Colonials have now blocked at least 20 shots 12 times in their past 22 outings. This year’s squad is blocking an average of more than 18.25 shots per game, which would be the highest mark in school history. As a comparison, RMU’s opponents are only blocking an average of 13.46 shots per contest. Jamie Joslin leads the team with 55 blocked shots, Kathryn Stack is next with 53, Paige Pietrangelo follows with 39 and Kylie St. Louis has 36.
National Notice
Just three days after tying the program record for wins, Robert Morris earned votes in the USCHO national rankings Jan. 9. It marked the first time since November 2009 that RMU claimed votes in the weekly USCHO poll, which is almost exclusively voted upon by head coaches across the country. Robert Morris was one of five schools to earn mention in the ‘others receiving votes’ category. It is not surprising to see the Colonials ranked among the nation’s elite as they rank seventh nationally in scoring defense and among the top 10 in both scoring margin and power-play success rate.
Impressive Imbrogno Is Reigning Rookie of the Year
After a record-setting freshman campaign, Thea Imbrogno became the first student-athlete in program history to win a major postseason league award as the conference named Imbrogno the CHA Rookie of the Year at its annual banquet last March. The rookie recognition was far from the only honor Imbrogno received as she was also the only freshman to earn 2011 all-conference honors as she was selected to the All-CHA Second Team. She became just the second freshman in the program’s six-year history to be chosen to an all-league team, joining former Colonial standout and United States Olympian Brianne McLaughlin. Imbrogno’s selection marks the seventh overall All-CHA award (First or Second Team) for a Colonial as the young RMU program has produced at least one all-conference honoree in every season of its existence. The rookie of the year honor put an ultimate cap on Imbrogno’s record-setting season. She earned a program-record eight in-season awards, topping McLaughlin’s former single-season mark. Imbrogno was especially dominating during the season’s crucial closing stretch when she led RMU to a programrecord unbeaten streak and won three of the last four CHA Rookie of the Week awards along with earning the CHA Rookie of the Month for February. Imbrogno finished the regular season tied for the team lead with 28 points and ranked seventh nationally in points per game for rookies due in part to concluding the regular season riding a program-record nine-game point streak. She tallied 12 goals and tied for the tops on the team with 16 assists and broke the single-season school record for shots, finishing with 119, in the regular season. Imbrogno’s season was made even more impressive by her ability to produce at the biggest moments and in the most important games. She posted 11 points in RMU’s 11 games against nationally-ranked opponents and also raised her play during CHA competition. She elevated her performance against league foes as she posted team-leading marks of 10 goals, 10 assists, 20 points and 72 shots in conference play. Imbrogno provided three game-tying goals on the season as was a key figure in multiple Colonial comebacks in February’s closing stretch. She assisted on the goal that began the rally and then put home the game-tying score herself all during the final 10 minutes of regulation Feb. 5 against Niagara before scoring both Colonial goals, including the game-tying one in the third period, to help RMU fight back and tie Syracuse Feb. 19. These performances helped Imbrogno notch a multi-point game in four of the final six contests of the regular season.

Colontino’s First Win
RMU ensured that first-year mentor Paul Colontino’s collegiate head-coaching debut would be a memorable one as the Colonials rolled to an impressive 8-0 victory over Lindenwood Oct. 7 in their 2011-12 season opener. Colontino, hired this past June, earned his first win with ease as RMU already held a 4-0 lead after just 27 minutes of action. Three different Colonials, including two freshmen, significantly aided Colontino’s cause by each contributing a trio of points. The eight-goal output was tied for the fifth-best in program history, and the shutout was the first for RMU either at home or in non-conference play since the 2008-09 season. It also marked both the Colonials’ best scoring output and biggest margin of victory ever in a season opener.
Clean Sweep
After RMU broke its record for the longest unbeaten streak in program history, three Colonials combined to sweep the trio of weekly awards given out by the CHA Nov. 14. Kylie St. Louis and Kelsey Thomas were designated as CHA Co-Players of the Week for their outstanding offensive efforts while freshman goaltender Courtney Vinet earned both CHA Goaltender of the Week and CHA Rookie of the Week honors. It marked the first time since October 2008 that RMU received recognition for both the league’s top offensive and top defensive performance. St. Louis had a huge offensive week from her spot in the Colonial defense with three goals and two assists. The blue-liner had yet to record a multi-point game in her career prior to that week, but she actually managed to accomplish the feat twice in fewer than 24 hours. Thomas, who garnered her first-career CHA award with the announcement, had a fantastic offensive weekend, thanks in large part to a career performance Nov. 12 in which she shattered her previous career high for points in a game. She registered a goal and four assists to become just the fourth Colonial in school history to tally a five-point game and the first ever to do so away from home. In just her second-career appearance between the pipes, Vinet earned her first-collegiate shutout as she stopped a team season-high-tying 31 shots to increase her save percentage to .959. Vinet moved to 2-0-0 with the win, becoming the first Colonial in school history to earn wins in each of her first two appearances in net.
Academic Athletes
The Robert Morris women’s hockey team earned a conference-best 16 selections on the CHA All-Academic Team that was announced this past summer. RMU freshman Anneline Lauziere merited further distinction as she was one of just six student-athletes in the CHA to be named to the league’s Academic All-Star Team, a squad that honors the student-athletes that have achieved the highest grade-point averages for their respective positions. Lauziere, a biology major, earned a dazzling 3.97 GPA for the season, including claiming a perfect 4.0 average during the first semester of her collegiate career. The defenseman was previously named as RMU’s Most Improved Player after she gathered five points, including her first-career goal, during the final 13 games of the regular season. To qualify for the CHA All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must post a 3.0 GPA or higher in all of the academic periods during which her team was actively competing. While 3.0 represents the minimum standard to qualify, all 16 of Robert Morris’ selections actually achieved a GPA of at least 3.2 during the past academic year. Freshman forward Thea Imbrogno was one of just six student-athletes across the CHA to claim both All-Conference and All-Academic Team honors. Imbrogno, the 2010-11 CHA Rookie of the Year, put up a 3.91 GPA during her first season with the Colonials as a biology major while also ranking sixth nationally in points per game for rookies.

Cobina Delaney scored often early in her sophomore season and finished fourth on the team with eight goals. In seven of the eight cases, she had her sister, Brianna, to thank. Brianna, who tied for the team lead with 30 points, assisted on seven of Cobina’s goals. In addition, one of Brianna’s assists for her sister was even more noteworthy since it allowed Brianna to break the RMU school record for career assists. However, before January 2011, the reverse situation had yet to occur. The Delaney duo changed that in their first game of 2011 as Cobina assisted on a goal for Brianna for the first time in their collegiate careers. Cobina then picked up the pace and has now assisted on six goals for Brianna, including four in 2011-12, while Brianna has assisted of 10 of her younger sister’s last 14 goals.

No More ‘No Zeroes’
Despite playing challenging schedules in each of the past two years, Robert Morris was in the midst of an impressive run nationally. The Colonials had not been shutout in their past 64 games, a program best, before last Friday’s 1-0 loss at Niagara. The streak was produced even though RMU had played 17 of those 64 contests against nationally-ranked foes--including six against opponents which were ranked No. 1 nationally. In fact, RMU’s 64-game stretch was the second longest in the nation at the time it was broken as it trailed only No. 2 Cornell, who had a 67-game streak entering last weekend.
Banner Achievement
The Robert Morris University Athletic Department held a special ceremony Sep. 24 to honor former Colonial women’s hockey goaltender and United States Olympian Brianne McLaughlin at the RMU Island Sports Center. The ceremony included remarks from Robert Morris President Dr. Gregory Dell’Omo, Robert Morris Athletic Director Dr. Craig Coleman and Robert Morris Associate Athletic Director Marty Galosi that highlighted and paid tribute to McLaughlin’s extensive list of accomplishments, both academic and athletic, before culminating with the unfurling of a 14’ by 8’ banner that will permanently hang in the Colonials’ home facility. “The Olympics were not Brianne’s only achievement,” Dell’Omo said. “Brianne set the NCAA’s record for saves while studying nursing at Robert Morris, one of our most demanding programs for the time it requires in clinical training. After the Olympics, she returned to Robert Morris to complete her degree. In short, Brianne was a scholar-athlete in the truest sense of the word, and a role model for students, faculty and staff--someone who exemplified our core values and our mission to change lives.” McLaughlin, who joined the RMU women’s hockey staff as a volunteer assistant coach in July 2011, had a storied collegiate career for Robert Morris before competing for her country in both Olympic and World Championship events. “On behalf of the RMU Department of Athletics, we congratulate Brianne on all of her achievements and hope that with this visual tribute, young girls will aspire to take after her on the ice and in the classroom,” Coleman said. “This banner is a fitting and permanent reminder as to how strongly we at Robert Morris feel about all that she has contributed to our women’s hockey program, our athletic department and our university.” The distinct banner was designed by Jeff Symonds, a former member of the Robert Morris sports information staff.
Goalie of the Week x4
Kristen DiCiocco was selected as the CHA Goaltender of the Week Jan. 9 to earn the award in four straight weeks in which RMU competed, becoming the first Colonial ever to pull off that feat. DiCiocco’s performance between the pipes was absolutely crucial to helping Robert Morris start strong in league play in early December. The junior made seven saves in a furious sequence during the final 30 seconds of overtime to help the Colonials hold off Syracuse Dec. 10. DiCiocco then posted a season-high 36 saves against nationally-ranked Bemidji State Dec. 30 before helping Robert Morris tie its program record for wins with a career performance. She tallied a career-high 43 saves Jan. 6 at Providence, including an amazing 20 in the third period alone, to lead RMU to a win over the Friars.

Captain Paige Pietrangelo’s father, Frank Pietrangelo, was as a goalie for the Pittsburgh Penguins from 1987-1992. He is remembered in Pittsburgh for his clutch performance in the 1991 Stanley Cup Playoffs. In the sixth game of the first round against the New Jersey Devils with the Penguins facing elimination, Pietrangelo faced a one-on-one with future Hall-of-Famer Peter Stastny. Pietrangelo made a remarkable glove save, which is known to this day in Penguin hockey history as “The Save”. The Penguins ended up winning Game Six, 4-3, to force a seventh game in which Pietrangelo earned a shutout win. The Penguins went on to win the Stanley Cup that season with Pietrangelo earning the win in Game Five of the finals. One other Colonial has a brother that is currently playing the NHL. Jamie Joslin’s brother, Derek, was a fifth-round draft pick by the San Jose Sharks in 2005. The defenseman made his NHL debut in the 200809 season at the age of 21 and has played in more games in each successive season. Joslin was traded to Carolina this past February and combined to play in a career-high 34 games for the two squads last season. He tallied his first-career NHL goal and recorded a career-best nine points in 2010-11. After the trade to Carolina, Joslin recorded a +7 plus/minus in just 17 games played. Joslin was one of eight defensemen on the Hurricanes’ roster at the beginning of the 2011-12 season.

Robert Morris will get to play a postseason game at home in the friendly confines of the RMU Island Sports Center for just the second time in program history this season. The Colonials will host the CHA Semifinals Friday, March 2, and the CHA Championship the following day, Saturday, March 3, as RMU hosts the league’s postseason tournament for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

Paul Colontino Head Coach First Season Mercyhurst ‘00 Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., announced the hiring of Paul Colontino as head women’s ice hockey coach in June 2011. Colontino, who had served as associate head coach at Mercyhurst since 2006, helped guide teams to the NCAA Tournament in each of the past five years, including earning two Frozen Four berths, and has over a decade of women’s hockey coaching experience at the Division I level. In Colontino’s five seasons with Mercyhurst, the Lakers have posted an overall record of 148-25-9 (.838), advanced to the national championship game once, made two Frozen Four appearances, qualified for the NCAA Tournament five times, were ranked No. 1 nationally in each season and won five College Hockey America (CHA) tournament championships and five regular-season titles. Immediately after Colontino returned to Mercyhurst as associate head coach, the Lakers went 32-2-3 in 2006-07, claiming the program record for victories, as they registered a nine-win improvement from the previous season and were ranked No. 1 nationally for 13 weeks. After a one-goal loss in the NCAA Tournament to the eventual national champions ended the Lakers’ 2007-08 season, the 2008-09 squad reached new heights. Entering the NCAA Tournament on a 15-game winning streak, Mercyhurst advanced to its first-ever Frozen Four with a victory over St. Lawrence and proceeded to top Minnesota in a thrilling semifinal contest to move into the national championship game against Wisconsin. The Lakers were ranked No. 1 for 23 weeks the following season, went 30-3-3 and advanced to the Frozen Four for the second straight season before succumbing in overtime to Cornell. While Colontino had a hand in leading and assisting in all aspects of the Lakers’ program, he specifically managed the defensive corps and worked with the penalty killing units, areas that have thrived recently for Mercyhurst. Under Colontino, the Lakers ranked among the top 10 nationally in scoring defense in each of his five seasons while allowing two goals per game or fewer on four of those occasions. Mercyhurst has also ranked among the top four programs nationally in killing off opponents’ power plays in each of the last two seasons.

Colontino also served as the recruiting coordinator for the Lakers and was able to attract numerous top-tier talents to Mercyhurst. He helped recruit the 2009-10 Patty Kazmaier Award winner, Vicki Bendus, one of four Kazmaier Award finalists Mercyhurst has earned under Colontino. The Lakers have received 28 All-CHA selections, including 17 First Team honors, since Colontino rejoined the staff, and he has helped his Laker defensemen earn eight All-CHA First Team awards in the past five years alone with Mercyhurst’s Cassea Schols grabbing CHA Defenseman of the Year honors for 2010-11.
Logan Bittle Assistant Coach Second Season Robert Morris ‘08
Colontino had numerous other responsibilities away from the ice for the Lakers including scheduling, monitoring academic affairs of student-athletes, preparing scouting reports of opponents, developing and conducting practices and organizing program fundraising events. Prior to his most recent stretch at Mercyhurst, Colontino was an assistant coach with the women’s team at the University of North Dakota for four years. He helped launch the women’s program with the Fighting Sioux in 2002 and was part of the coaching staff the following season when North Dakota won 11 of its final 12 games to post a winning record in just its second season of existence. Some of Colontino’s responsibilities with North Dakota included training the Fighting Sioux defensive units, aiding with video analysis and recruiting prospective student-athletes along with organizing the staff’s recruiting efforts. He also developed, scheduled and organized an annual international hockey tournament at North Dakota. During his time on staff, the Fighting Sioux transitioned into the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) in their third season as a program and upset fourth-ranked Minnesota Duluth on the road in February 2006, the highest-ranked opponent the Sioux had defeated in program history to that point. Colontino, who has also been an instructor at numerous hockey camps and clinics throughout the country, began his coaching career as an assistant with Mercyhurst in 2000. He planned and instructed the strength and conditioning efforts for the program, coordinated individual video sessions with student-athletes, helped oversee the program’s travel and equipment budgets and organized team community service efforts. In the second season of his first stint with Mercyhurst, the Lakers won a then school-record 24 games, including posting a perfect 8-0-0 mark in conference play. Before moving to the coaching side, Colontino played for four years at Mercyhurst and earned multiple notable awards in the process. While serving as a team captain in his senior season, he was named both Mercyhurst Student-Athlete of the Year and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Co-Defensive Player of the Year while leading the Lakers to a then school-record tying 23 wins. Colontino, who was also an All-MAAC First Team selection, helped Mercyhurst to a winning record in each of his seasons on the ice with the Lakers.
