Assistive technology for business Your organisation almost certainly has customers or clients with sight loss, even though they may not be immediately obvious to you. Have you ever wondered how they access and use your website? Or information you email or post to them? Assistive technology is technology that allows a person with sight loss to access computer-based or print information. One example is a ‘screen reader’, which not only reads out text from a screen, but also gives relevant contextual information – is that text a heading? Is that box ticked? Understanding how a person with sight loss makes use of their assistive technology can help you ensure you target your information effectively, so that the recipient can read, digest and act upon it. RNIB Business offers a one-day workshop in assistive technology for businesses. The course covers: • myths about sight loss • what assistive technologies are used by blind or partially sighted people? • “built-in” and “add-on” assistive technology – what’s the difference? • what are the trends in assistive technology? • how does someone use assistive technology to: • read a document? • read a web page? • deal with product packaging? • ground rules for users of assistive technology • testing for accessibility using assistive technology 33
There will be demonstrations of common assistive technologies, plus opportunities to try a variety of devices and software. Giving you an awareness of some of the common frustrations experienced by blind or partially sighted people – and the tools and techniques needed to create accessibility. The workshop will be tailored to your specific needs, and target the areas relevant to your organisation. By the end of the day, you will be aware of the variety of ways in which people with sight loss can interact with the information you present them, which in turn will enable you to tailor your products and service to maximise impact and reach. Solutions Academy Our Solutions Academy offers a unique and highly innovative and focused learning opportunity for senior managers. Following an initial planning and scoping session, we will work with you to devise appropriate learning opportunities aligned to your organisation’s business goals. Using a refined blend of tailored learning experiences, we will enable your staff to develop an organisationspecific understanding of the business challenges and opportunities around inclusion, with a strong focus on broadening your customer base.

PDF audit Why carry out an RNIB PDF audit? PDFs may be created by a wide variety of people within your organisation. However, accessibility guidelines should still apply as PDFs can be hosted on websites, emailed to your audience with no control over who views them. By their very nature, PDFs often hold complex information and ensuring accessibility isn’t easy, even Adobe’s built in Accessibility feature doesn’t ensure an accessible document. How will an RNIB PDF audit help? If you’re unsure of the accessibility of your PDFs we can provide an audit report offering you advice on corrections or using our PDF fixing service we can deliver a fully accessible and tested PDF which will work across all access technologies.
