I am always interested in space creation and problem-solving. I always believe that there are millions of ways to do a particular task and should be conscientious about why we choose a specific way to do it. How I get the idea of architecture is, that it creates a system that will have a direct & indirect impact on the end-users and shape their lives. We, humans, tend to connect to the space emotionally and psychologically, where it becomes a part of ourselves. So designing any kind of space, at any scale must be looked at and designed with utmost love and care.

SILVER OAK The brief was to design a group housing with apartment and row house near the Roerich Estate. Out from the city and its chaos and density. The site sits next to the 468-acre Roerich Estate, which overlooks two water bodies nearby, Thathaguni lake and Kuppaready kere. On one side it had lush green forest, lake and mountains and on the other side it has Thathaguni a developing town which house many small industries and BWSSB pumping station. There is a proposed metro station coming near the site.

WHERE?

Location - Thathaguni, Bangalore Site Area - 16.5 Acres

The Thathaguni estate, which is about 25-kms off the city, has a 13-acre natural water body that is rain fed. Blessed with natural downstream the lake’s water level was always brimming and minimal disruption from construction sites attract a lot of migratory birds. Over the years. The Thathaguni and surrounding areas including Harohalli and Thalagttapura fell victim to random constructions and sewage disposal from the residential complexes mushrooming around, like the fate of other lakes in Bengaluru.

The Lung The concept was to create a central space, preferably outdoor space which will act as a transitional space and creating a pattern of open, semi-open and closed space. Open space was the children’s park, adult park and ‘The Lung’, which is the ironically heart of the design. The Clubhouse and the three towers are built in a way that it sits looking into ‘The Lung’ on one side and the other side getting a view of the two lakes and the beautiful Roerich estate. ‘The Lung’ is a idea which was developed to improve the air quality inside the community. Even though one side is cover with lush green trees, the east and southern side of the site (Thathaguni and Harohalli) is mostly of industries. The Lung consists of many trees with medicinal value like plants like sandalwood trees (that is known for their antiseptic properties) , and Palo Santo. These are found throughout the estate and also in Bannerghatta forest

09

Row house : The idea of the row house was to make allow the house to have its own identity and break the monotony in the stretch by creating an open space for each unit. By this, each house gets its own garden and it can have its identity.

The ground floor has parking, a store room, and a garden (front yard and backyard). A staircase leads to the sit-out on the first floor which enters into the living. The first-floor plan is open plan and it consists of living, dining, and a kitchen

The second floor has two bedrooms, one overlooking the garden and the other one overlooking the central park in the row house stretch. On the third floor, we have one bedroom overlooking the central park and the terrace is covered and it views the garden and the park

CASCADE MAISON The design brief was to select a site of our own choice and build a vacation house for ourselves. As it was the first major design project, the focus was to make us understand the space and space-making process and a few basics of residential design. The site I selected was Kilt Rock & Mealt Falls Viewpoint in Scotland. It is a rare site where a waterfall meets the ocean and Kilt Rock & Mealt Falls is one of them.

Sem - 1 Tools utilized - Autocad, Sketchup, Enscape, Vray, Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator

CASCADE MAISON

14

WHERE?

Mealt falls (also named Kilt Rock Waterfall) is certainly an extraordinary waterfall. The water of Loch Mealt plunges 55 meters down, over the cliffs of Kilt rock, directly into the Atlantic Ocean. It is located near Elishader, south of Staffin, along road A855 on the Isle of Sky in Scotland (United Kingdom). On clear days, the Isle of Lewis and even mainland Scotland can be seen from the Trotternish Peninsula. About 17 km north of Portree, up Staffin Road, and just 2 km shy of Staffin, the observation point can be found.

The major reason for this site selection was my obsession for the European country and waterfall meeting the ocean is a delight. Not just visually, the So setting up a vacation house in this context was both a challenge and a pleasure. Beyond these visual treats there is also an aural element to the site. When a strong wind is blowing while one observes the sights, a beautiful yet haunting tone appears to come from the surrounding area. So designing a vacation house in this context is both challenge and pleasure

15

HOW?

Evolution of the form

Fallingwater: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater is one of the main inspirations for this project. The way it appeals to the human senses (textured surfaces, the sound of the waterfall, aroma from the surrounding trees, visual balance) is the soul of that project. Especially the materials used are mostly locally available and it made the building blend into nature

Cascade Maison: The entry to the house is a pathway along the waterfall, which leads into the living space which has a stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean. Besides the living, we have a bedroom that is elevated from the living and sits on an intermediate level. The living room leads into two paths, one to the deck and the pool, the other one to the below floor. The deck runs along the pool and it overlooks the ocean. The deck is extended beyond the cliff and it is extended for about 6 m from the edge of the cliff. Below the living, we have an informal living kitchen and dining overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The waterfall serves as a cascade to the kitchen and the sound of water will always be filled. The next floor consists of a reading room, bedroom, and bathroom. The façade is covered with glass as these spaces will be having a view of the waterfall and the ocean. The house is facing in the east direction it has a view of the sunrise and the major wind direction is from the west side. As the house is designed partially inside the cliff, the western side is closed and only the first floor receives from this wind. As it is at the seaside it will have the effect of land breeze and sea breeze and this is being used for the ventilation.

THE BOWL The design brief was to select a site with extreme climate and design a building solving the climatic issue with a performative approach. The selected site was mangalore which recieves heavy rainfall for two months and as it is on the seaside the humidity is high. The program of the building selected based on the site.

FLEXAGON

Flexagon is a hexagon shaped automated window which responds to the internal temperature and humidity. Three units of 6-faced solid volume are attached to a hexagon frame on the edges. These are connected to a computer system that analyzes the temperature and humidity and opens the flexagons according to it. The frames are made up of lightweight metals like aluminium and covered by etfe, which allows light and absorbs heat flexagon allows cross ventilation which is the key method to reduce the effect of humidity and etfe along with landscaping strategy might reduce the humidity.

The Bowl: As the site is surrounded by water on three sides, the site has a panoramic view of the river. The site has access to both the land and water. The stadium has football as the main sport and tennis, badminton, volleyball, and other board games as indoor games. It has four major zones, mini turf, a people’s screen, an indoor games block, and a football field. The dock serves as an entry point for the people coming through the water. The mini turf is a 7-vs-7 football turf with a smaller field size and it is open to the public with limited seating around it. People’s screen is an open-air theatre with a large screen for telecasting live sports events for the public. This will serve as a major public gathering space and the events which are happening inside the field will also be telecasted here. The indoor sports block has an entry point from the people’s screen and it has indoor games rooms, a sports museum, and arcade games center. The football field has a total of nine entry points, three on either side for the public, one for club members, one for VIPs, and one for players which is from the dressing room under the turf. The stands are supported by the HY and GY columns. HY and GY columns are lopsidedly molded components characterized by aesthetic and practical constraints. Each column was formed without any joint in between and directly connecting to the radial beam and foundation at the top and bottom, respectively.

PLATINUM WHITE GRANITE Popular for its unbiased tone and elusive looks, Platinum White Granite is a leading white Indian granite that brings a calming effect to the surroundings. This granite variant is primarily known for its warm and subtle design pattern that looks classy in any environment. Whenever it comes to adding a touch of grandeur to an area, there is nothing more prominent option than natural stones. This might be the reason why you will find the use of natural stones in all world-renowned structures like the Taj Mahal, the Colosseum, Stonehenge, The Great Pyramid, Casa Mila, and lot others. Some popular natural stones for construction are granite, marble, limestone, stay, and quartzite.
