Peterbilt Motors Company has announced additional options for the Model 382 offering higher axle ratings, horsepower and torque configurations to an expanded market range. Already a proven performer in regional and short-haul applications, the Model 382, available in both truck and tractor configurations, is ideally suited to meet municipal specifications and a variety of construction, refuse, fire service and emergency applications. New options on the Model 382 include: • The Cummins ISL9 engine with REPTO functionality • Front axles rated up to 20,000 pounds • Rear axles rated up to 46,000
pounds • Frame rail options up to 115/8 inches • The Bendix ESP Stability system for truck applications • Hendrickson, Reyco and Chalmers rear suspension choices. The Model 382 is powered by a highly efficient Cummins ISL9 engine which has one of the highest power-to-weight ratios in its class. An improved Electronic Control Module (ECM) and improved air flow allows the ISL9 to run stronger and with greater responsiveness. Ratings range from 345-380 hp with a maximum 1300 lb-ft of torque. The Model 382 also features a 50-degree wheel cut allowing drivers to easily maneuver
in congested urban environments as well as tight loading and unloading conditions. The cab was specifically designed to offer driver comfort and safety. The sloped hood provides optimal visibility and a technologically advanced forward-lighting system that produces both a broader and brighter lighted area. With back-lit gauges, contoured door panels, and rocker switches placed within easy reach, everything in the driver’s operating environment is ergonomically designed to keep the driver alert, comfortable and productive. In addition, the HVAC system has been improved and offers additional air flow while reducing maintenance costs.

Bridgestone launches three truck tires at gATS 2011
Three new Bridgestone commercial tires were introduced at the 2011 Great American Trucking Show (GATS) in Dallas. These are the Greatec R125A, the M799 mixed service radial and the M770 drive tire. The Greatec R125A wide base trailer radial provides more payload, longer tire wear and reduces costs per mile. It is equipped with an exclusive belt system to maintain casing shape. The wide top belt is optimized for better irregular wear resistance and the Waved Belt design holds the tread flat against the road for long, even wear and excellent handling. The Greatec R125A comes in size 445/50R22.5 (L). The M799 mixed service radial is designed for fleets that need a longwearing tire for on-highway service and occasional use on gravel roads and debris-filled job sites. Bridgestone says the tire’s all-steel casing provides durability and retreadability, while casingsaving stone rejector platforms help prevent rocks from being trapped in the tread and drilling their way into the
belts. The M799’s cap compound is engineered for on- and off-highway use, while the base compound helps shield the casing from damaging heat for enhanced retreadability. A top steel belt fights flats by adding protection against road hazards. The M799 is available in sizes 11R22.5, 11R24.5 and 12R22.5. The M770 open-shoulder drive axle radial is designed for high traction and high scrub applications in long haul, regional and pickup and delivery service. The M770 combines greater tread volume for longer mileage with good traction in all weather conditions. The tire features a groove and block shape to fight lug base cracking and tearing. The M770 offers stone rejector platforms in all grooves to help prevent stones from getting trapped and drilling into the belts, increasing retreadability. The M770 is available in size 295/75R22.5 (G). Sizes 285/75R24.5 (G), 11R22.5 (G/H) and 11R24.5 (G) are all expected to be available during the first quarter of 2012.

Canada, uS, Moving Ahead with Regulation of heavy Truck ghg’s
The United States and Canada have taken the next important step towards reducing Greenhouse gases (GHG’s) from medium and heavy-duty trucks. In a coordinated series of announcements last month, the US released its final rule on GHG’s and fuel emission standards for medium and heavyduty vehicles, and Canada issued a consultation document for what are expected to be very similar rules on this side of the border. Over the past decade, US and Canadian regulators have focused their attention on smog causing pollutants, and through a series of regulations on truck engines and fuels, have reached the point where new trucks rolling off the assembly line are virtually smog free. The release of a final rule in the United States now shifts the focus towards reducing Greenhouse Gases as well. According to information issued by the US Environmental Protection Agency, the regulations will lead to a 20 percent reduction in fuel consumption and GHG emissions by model year 2018. However, CTA questions how that will occur since the regulation will only deal with new tractors and engines. The Alliance has been calling for measures to accelerate the penetration of the new “GHG compliant tractors into the marketplace and for a complementary program of voluntary measures for retrofitting the existing fleet of tractors and more importantly trailers. Both the US and Canada acknowledged in their announcements that further progress towards GHG reductions from trucking are possible by focusing on highway trailers, but this will be addressed at a future date. The consultation paper is intended to provide another opportunity for interested parties to submit early comments prior to publishing proposed regulations in Canada Gazette Part I. Proposed regulations are targeted for publication in Canada Gazette Part I early in 2012 for a 60-day comment period. The proposed regulations would seek to reduce emissions and improve the fuel efficiency of the whole range of new on-road heavy-duty vehicles from full-size pick-up trucks to tractor-trailers, and include a wide variety of vocational vehicles such as freight, delivery, service, cement, garbage and dump trucks, as well as buses. The proposed regulations would also seek to promote the implementation of advanced technology vehicles such as hybrid and electric vehicles.

Navistar Announces North America Restructuring Plans E

Navistar International has announced that it intends to close its Chatham, Ontario, truck manufacturing operation, which has been idled since June 2009. The company also announced plans to rationalize and better integrate its RV and chassis businesses. The Chatham facility has been idled and employees have been on layoff status for the past two years due to the company’s inability to reach a collective bargaining agreement with the Canadian Auto Workers. As a result, Chatham production has already been absorbed by other Navistar truck plants. “From a capacity standpoint, we are well positioned to meet demand expected in the last half of 2011 and further increases in 2012,” said Dee Kapur, president, Navistar Truck Group. “We’re seeing tremendous benefit from our flexible
manufacturing strategy, which allows us to build more trucks—and a wider variety of them—at various plants.” Navistar also announced plans to significantly scale back operations at its Monaco headquarters and motor coach manufacturing plant in Coburg, Ore., which will impact approximately 450 people. All motor coach production will be consolidated at Monaco’s Wakarusa, Ind., manufacturing facility, and certain Monaco headquarters functions will be consolidated at Navistar’s new corporate campus in Lisle, Ill. The company plans to continue producing towables and retain certain finance and information systems operations in Oregon, as well as maintain a RV service center there. The company’s Workhorse Custom Chassis subsidiary plans
to close its Union City, Ind., chassis plant, impacting about 225 employees. These operations will be consolidated into other existing Navistar facilities for greater efficiency and productivity. Meanwhile, combining all motor coach production in Wakarusa will add about 400 jobs at that facility. The planned restructuring and asset impairment activities related to the Chatham closure and Monaco/Workhorse consolidation may result in charges of approximately $200 to $230 million. Most of the restructuring charges are expected to occur in the third and fourth quarters 2011, with the remainder taking place in 2012. The company expects ongoing savings of $20 million to $30 million annually once all of the actions are implemented.
Distracted driving, more than just cell phones: poll
A new Road Safety Monitor (RSM) poll by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) shows that a majority of Canadians continue to mainly associate distracted driving with cell phone use while continuing to engage in other distracting behaviours. The public opinion poll conducted in September 2010 investigated Canadians’ driving behaviours and perceptions of distracted driving. When Canadians were asked what they associate with distracted driving, 72.2% of respondents first thought of cell phones. The other top five distractions mentioned include eating and drinking (4%), passengers (3.4%), other drivers on the road (2.9%), and changing the radio station or CDs (2.8%). For researchers this suggests that Canadians may not fully appreciate the complete spectrum of behaviours that are distracting to a driver. “Distraction is a diversion of the driver’s attention from the driving task,” explains Robyn Robertson, lead researcher and President and CEO at TIRF. “This issue is much broader than just cell phones and includes distractions inside the vehicle such as eating, drinking, smoking, as well as distractions outside the vehicle such as looking at billboards, other drivers and scenery along the road.” While less than 20% of drivers who responded admitted to using cell phones and other technical devices, many admitted to engaging in other
distracting activities, such as talking or interacting with passengers (67%)
and forth between tasks, and the more we jump from one task to the other, the
and changing the radio stations or CDs while driving (45.8%). These numbers suggest that a large number of drivers engage in distracting behaviours and may not be aware that they are putting themselves, their passengers and other road users at risk. Robertson clarifies that, “In reality, people cannot multi-task. While we may think that we’re multi-tasking our brains are actually switching back
less we focus on each individual task.” This lack of attention can result in a slower reaction time and other driving errors which can lead to near misses and crashes. According to poll results these near misses and crashes do happen. While few drivers admitted to being in a collision in the last year due to being distracted, (4.3% from a distraction outside their vehicle and 2.7% from a
distraction inside their vehicle) more Canadians admitted to having to brake or steer to avoid a collision in the last month because of a distraction (27% and 13% respectively). “The number of distracted driving related collisions in Canada is a frequent request for TIRF; however, this is still a relatively new issue and efforts are ongoing to strengthen data collection. Nevertheless, available research in the field generally supports the belief that driver distraction is a factor in 20% - 30% of road crashes”, notes Robertson. “More data collection and research on distracted driving-related collisions is needed to better understand the magnitude and characteristics of the distracted driving problem in Canada.” Similar to previous RSM surveys, respondents were asked to rate their level of concern for various road safety issues. Of notable interest, for the first time ever, more Canadians considered texting while driving a very or extremely serious problem (90.2%), surpassing both concern about drinking drivers (84.5%) and young drinking drivers (83%). As a reflection of this concern, 70% of respondents agreed that greater awareness and education efforts are needed to alert drivers to the problems of distracted driving. This would suggest that, in addition to strengthened driving laws, drivers would be receptive to a public education program aimed at educating them on all aspects of the distracted driving problem.

OTA Road Knights Star in Videos on Road Safety
The Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) has produced road safety videos featuring the expertise of the OTA Road Knights Team. The videos share tips on how all road users can safely use Ontario’s roadways. “The Road Knights have a wealth of safety information to share with Ontarians on road safety and safe driving practices,” said OTA President, David Bradley. “By using videos, their message of responsible road use can reach a wider audience.” The videos, Sharing the Road with a Truck and Sharing the Road with a Car, were shot in June at OTA’s office and Bison Transport’s terminal in Mississauga. OTA Road Knights Ravinder Athwal and Daniel Santoro of Trimac Transportation Services Ltd., John Bonesechansker of Laidlaw Carriers Van LP, Jack Fielding of Bison Transport, and Road Knight Alumni Anne Finley of Sunbury Transport and Guy Broderick of APPS Transport Group star in the videos. Host Christina Howorun offered her professional reporting skills to help educate the audience on the importance of safety on Ontario’s roadways. The videos, Sharing the Road with a Car and Sharing the Road with a Truck, are available for viewing on OTA’s site and will be shared on the OTA Road Knights’ Facebook page. Sponsored by the OTA Allied Trades Division, the OTA Road Knights Team is a group of professional truck drivers who serve as ambassadors of the Ontario trucking industry. The Team speaks to community groups, schools, safety organizations and other groups on road safety and careers in the trucking industry. For more information on the OTA Road Knights, or to book a free presentation on road safety or careers in trucking, please contact OTA.

Navistar’s International Trucks Launch ‘Turn-In-Three’ Lease Program Innovative New Leasing Option Helps Small Businesses Thrive in a Challenging Economy
In today’s challenging economic conditions, small businesses are constantly on the lookout for new and improved ways to more efficiently manage their operations. In response to these customer needs, International Trucks has developed the Turn-In-Three program, which offers customers a fixed monthly payment over six years, full warranty coverage and a new truck after three years into the program. The Turn-in-Three program is available on two truck models: the medium-duty commercial truck, the International DuraStar; and the company’s newest entry in the Class 4/5 commercial truck segment, the International TerraStar. “International’s innovative Turn-In-Three program specifically offers fleets and small businesses a worry-free solution that also positively impacts the bottom line,” said Jim Hebe, Navistar senior vice president, North American sales operations. “In the end, customers get outstanding reliability in the form of two new trucks over the course of six years with full warranty coverage and fixed
payments throughout.” The two, three-year leases with a fixed payment over six years provide greater certainty in
an uncertain world—and puts a new fleet management option in the toolbox of today’s companies. The program offers customers: • A six-year fixed monthly lease payment where after three years, the truck is replaced with a new truck to fulfill the final three years. The body is also transferred free of charge; • A substitute truck to use while the transfer work is being completed; • 100 percent warranty coverage on both vehicles, with a
full parts and labor warranty on the engine, chassis and complete drivetrain; and, • The chance to walk away at the end of six years or purchase the vehicle at market value. DuraStar has been the No. 1 selling medium-duty truck for the past 20 years, and though the TerraStar is International’s newest model, its build embodies the same core values as the International trucks that came before it. From TerraStar’s virtually indestructible huck-bolted steel chassis to the powerful MaxxForce engines with Advanced EGR, the product is a truck that shares the brand’s legendary DNA for ruggedness, durability, dependability and value. Whether leasing the fleet of the future or just one truck, the Turn-in-Three program puts businesses in the driver’s seat with tremendous peace of mind. Those interested in taking advantage of this innovation in leasing from International should visit www. InternationalTrucks.com/turnin-three to find a participating dealer.
Police nab alleged insurance fraudsters in Hamilton: “They Cheat, You Pay,” says IBC The Hamilton Police Service has completed a six-month insurance fraud investigation dubbed “Project Overhaul” that resulted in the search of two local auto body shops and the arrest of three Hamilton men. This investigation was focused on local collision repair companies that were hiring the services of “Chasers” to attend collision scenes and Collision Reporting Centres to obtain business through fraudulent means and then inflating the cost of claims to defraud the insurance companies. This investigation began after a 73 yr. old driver was flagged down on a City street by a ‘Chaser’ after she left the Mountain Police Station Collision Reporting Centre to report a minor collision. This driver was advised by the ‘Chaser’ that her vehicle was unsafe to drive, that he worked for a collision repair company, and that he would not only take care
of her car and repair it, but that he would also put her into a rental vehicle while the work was being done. When the insurance adjuster attended the Auto Body Shop there was additional damage on the vehicle that had not been there when the collision had been reported to the police or when the car had been turned over to the body shop for repair. At the same time, The City of Hamilton By-Law office had simultaneously began its own investigation into these shops after receiving several complaints with similar facts from other citizens involving the same ‘Chaser’ and collision repair businesses. On August 24th, 2011, the Hamilton Police Service simultaneously executed search warrants at Stoney Creek Collision on Queenston Rd. in Stoney Creek and at Southwestern Collision Centre on Dundurn St. in Ham-
ilton. Insurance fraud is big business in Ontario. At present, IBC is investigating approximately 50 multi-case fraud projects in the Greater Toronto Area, many involving staged collisions and associated service provider fraud. But a recent IBC poll indicates that less than half of Ontarians only 47% - understand the impact that insurance fraud has on premiums. IBC has advocated for measures to address the underlying factors that contribute to the problem of insurance fraud, including strict regulation to oversee the ownership and operation of medical clinics in Ontario, combined with tougher criminal and civil penalties pertaining to identity fraud and theft. In July, the provincial government announced the composition of its Auto Insurance Anti-Fraud Task Force.

Brampton Transit Introduces Züm Main Street Riders can now Züm to Mississauga Brampton Transit has launched Züm Main Street, the second line of its new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service. Züm is the City of Brampton’s response to the need for improved transportation options within Canada’s fourth-fastest growing city. Züm Main Street runs from Sandalwood Parkway to the Mississauga City Centre Transit Terminal at Square One. It also connects with two of Brampton’s major transit terminals – Downtown (via the Nelson/Theatre Lane stop) and Shoppers World. On September 20, 2010, Brampton Transit launched the Züm Queen Street line, running from Downtown Brampton to York University. In the fall of 2012, Züm Steeles Avenue will begin operating between Shoppers World and Humber College. “The $95 million contribution for Züm is the largest, single investment made by the City of Brampton. The introduction of Züm Main Street demonstrates our continued commitment to effective public transit solutions for Brampton residents,” said Mayor Susan Fennell. “The success of Züm places Brampton as a leader in public transit within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).” Since the Züm Queen Street launch, Brampton Transit has seen significant ridership growth. Overall ridership hit an all-time record in 2010, increasing by 12.6 per cent, which is more than three times the national industry average of four per cent. In total, 13.8 million riders used Brampton Transit in 2010, resulting in an increase of more than 1.5 million riders, compared to 2009. During the first 10 months of Züm service, Brampton Transit’s total ridership has grown by 17.6 per cent.
City of Brampton Mayor Susan Fennell waves the checkered flag to celebrate the first day of Züm service along Main Street/Hurontario Street.

Daimler Trucks North America has announced the availability of its TruckerNet commercial driver support application for RIM Blackberry devices in addition to Apple iPhone and Google Android platforms. This announcement comes, as the smartphone app surpasses 6,000 downloads since its March introduction at the 2011 Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky. The mobile app allows drivers
with a GPS-enabled smartphone 24/7 access to service location and parts information, including current parts specials. Drivers also have the ability to access immediate breakdown service support with connections to the Excelerator breakdown assistance service through the app’s one-touch interface. Excelerator offers on-call support for roadside assistance, tow/extraction and even monitoring of repairs to get drivers back
Nominate a Courageous Trucker for the Bridgestone OTA Truck hero Award The Class 3-8 used truck market tumbled 10% in July, reversing the market gain posted during June. Lack of inventory continues to be a challenge for the industry, with particular pressure occurring in the late model/low mileage market segment, according to ACT Research Co. (ACT). Examined on a yearto-date basis, the used market is 4% behind the yearago pace. The update on the used market was reported in the latest release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, published by ACT Research. “We expect both age and mileage of used trucks to continue to grow throughout the rest of 2011,” said Steve Tam, vice president-commercial vehicle sector with ACT. “Despite those trends, tight supply will result in used truck prices drifting further upward. While improving new truck sales will generate more trade-ins, providing some relief to used market pressures, we expect this will only act to soften growth in prices, not reverse it,” added Tam. The report from ACT provides data on the average used price for the top-selling Class 8 model for each of the major truck OEM’s – Freightliner (Daimler); Kenworth and Peterbilt (Paccar); International (Navistar); and Volvo and Mack (Volvo)
on the road fast. TruckerNet provides immediate connectivity to a network of more than 1,000 parts and service locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. The app will soon feature even more sophisticated mapping functions and additional search filters to enable drivers to more quickly find the kind of parts and services they are searching for.
New Drive Clean Changes help Families Save Time and Money Changes to Drive Clean which came into effect on September 1st will save Ontario families money and protect the air our children, grandchildren and seniors breathe. All vehicles -- cars, trucks and buses -- less than seven years old no longer need to be tested when their registration is renewed. Passenger cars, vans and SUVs also no longer need to be tested for the following: • transfer between family members • coming off lease and being purchased by
the person who was leasing the vehicle • renewing registration after having passed a test in the previous year. Drive Clean helps ensure that our children and grandchildren have clean air to breathe by improving the quality of our air by reducing smog pollutants. These changes are part of the Ontario government’s plan to build a stronger economy and create jobs while protecting the health and well-being of Ontarians for generations.

Nissan Canada announces cross-country Drive Electric Tour
Nissan Canada has announced that on September 6th, the all-electric Nissan LEAF begins a cross-Canada tour, allowing Canadians to test drive and learn more about the zeroemission vehicle at Nissan LEAF certified dealers. One of the industry’s mostdiscussed vehicles for good reason, Nissan LEAF is the world’s first mass-marketed all-electric car made for the real-world driving needs of consumers and was recently named the 2011 World Car of the Year. Nissan LEAF is a mediumsize hatchback with ample cargo space and seating for five adults comfortably. With a range of 160 kilometres (EPA LA4 cycle) on one full charge, Nissan LEAF provides 90% of Canadians with the range needed for daily commutes. With a 240 volt home charging dock full charge is achieved in seven hours, and with a Level 3 Quick Charger, 80% charge can be achieved in just 26 minutes. Powered by a lithium-ion battery, Nissan LEAF generates 107 horsepower, 207 lb-ft of torque providing a highly responsive, fun-to-drive experience. Because there’s no traditional engine, Nissan LEAF is ultra-quiet and for safety reasons a sound had to be added so pedestrians could hear the car coming. In April, Nissan LEAF was awarded a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Drive Electric Tour begins in Montreal and ends in Vancouver in late October, stopping at 27 LEAF certified dealers across the country for one
or two days each. It is a oneof-a-kind consumer driving experience providing prospective Nissan LEAF owners with the opportunity to learn about the car, its technology and features, and take it for a short test drive. “There’s nothing like driving the Nissan LEAF for the first time because people are always amazed that an all-electric car that produces no emissions, is so quiet, responsive and fun to drive, while at the same time being so functional,” said Judy Wheeler, Director of Marketing at Nissan Canada, Inc. “The Drive Electric Tour provides an opportunity for those who are curious about the Nissan LEAF to get behind the wheel and ask experts all about what it means to drive electric.” All 27 EV-certified dealers are participating in the tour and will have three Nissan LEAFs available for test drives as well as one on display. Five kilometre test drives are offered to provide ample seat time to experience the Nissan LEAF in real-world driving situations and product experts will be on hand at the event and will accompany each test drive to answer any questions potential customers have. In addition to experiencing the car for themselves, consumers can learn about home charging options, the low operating cost and Nissan’s CARWINGS telematics system, which enables Nissan LEAF owners to communicate with their car by smart phone. Test drives are limited and booked in advance at www.nissan.ca/driveelectrictour.
